Survey highlights mental health challenges Beacon firefighter David Brewer has performed CPR on five people he knew, including a friend who collapsed on Labor Day weekend in 2023 and died despite his efforts. Then there are the other stressors: being away from his family for 24-hour shifts, the rush of adrenaline when an alarm sounds and the anxious efforts to extinguish a fire. A panic attack hospitalized him on Christmas Eve a few years ago, said Brewer. "Your bucket just gets filled up and filled up and filled up until, eventually, it overflows," said Brewer. That is the situation for many first responders, according to an inaugural statewide survey of 6,000 emergency personnel, including 900 from the Mid-Hudson region, that asked about their mental health. Released on Feb. 5, the report is a collaboration between the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Institute for Disaster Mental Health and the Benjamin Center for Public Policy Initiatives at SUNY New Paltz. Of the police officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency dispatchers and emergency managers surveyed, 94 percent cited stress as a challenge and nine out of 10 mentioned burnout and anxiety. A majority also reported stress from traumatic events such as shootings and accidents (56 percent) and suffering symptoms of depression (53 percent). Another 40 percent experienced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and 16 percent thought of suicide. Being exposed to constant trauma "can destroy relationships, it can destroy families, it can destroy that person," said Aaron Leonard, a lieutenant with the Cold Spring Fire Co. and the newly appointed CEO of Guardian Revival, a Beacon organization that provides services for veterans and first responders, including peer counseling. "I have had my own experiences of sitting at my house having dinner, and then five minutes later, I'm doing CPR, the person passes away and you just go back home," he said. "Where do you unpack that experience?" The list of barriers that prevent first responders from getting help is long, with about 80 percent citing the stigmas surrounding mental health and concerns that colleagues will deem them unreliable. Others worried that seeking help would impact their career or cause supervisors to treat them differently (74 percent), or lead to losing their firearms license (68 percent). "It used to be, push that stuff down," said Brewer, whose 43-year firefighting career includes 25 years as a volunteer. "You were a lesser firefighter if you talked about that." Brewer was "circling the drain" before a 45-minute phone call with a peer counselor at Guardian Revival helped him understand that he did everything possible to save his friend. He has also attended a Guardian Revival workshop where veterans and first responders congregate around a campfire to talk about stressors. "Sometimes you go, 'Wow, I'm not alone,'" said Brewer. "Sometimes you go, 'I'm not that messed up.' " In addition to peer counseling, survey respondents expressed interest in training on topics such as managing stress and coping with anxiety or depression. Their wish list of solutions includes access to gym memberships or in-house equipment, like the weight room at Beacon's new firehouse, and paid time for mental health care. Guardian Revival has memorandums of understanding to assist 25 fire departments in Dutchess and Putnam counties with wellness programs, said Leonard. The Cold Spring Fire Co. launched its program on Monday (Feb. 10) with a yoga class for firefighters and their families. Shari Alexander, a Cold Spring firefighter, coordinates the program with Leonard's wife, Leslie, who teaches the yoga class. Alexander said two personal trainers have volunteered to lead strength training, she will lead a class on breathing techniques and there will be a pushup challenge and sessions on topics such as healthy eating. "Calls can be difficult and emotional and taxing," she said. "Part of it is preven...

She has personally learned the best persuasive triggers and techniques from master influencers, including CIA field agents, hostage negotiators, con-artists, HUMINT officers, interrogators, trial attorneys, mentalists, undercover law enforcement, and even pick-up artists. Her mission is to put these powerful skills in the hands of entrepreneurs and leaders so that they can effectively be a positive influence in their businesses and lives. Sharí has designed numerous communication training courses and speeches that cover these enlightening areas of enhanced communication, along with self-study programs. Sharí is certified in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), microexpressions, and body language. Her clients include CEOs, politicians, professional athletes (NFL, NBA), television and movie producers, news commentators (ESPN, HLN, NBC), and New York Times Bestselling authors. Sharí is also a regular contributor to Entrepreneur and guest lecturer at USC. Website: www.shari-alexander.com System Overview Ask yourself “what do I need to know?” instead of “what should I say?” One common mishap that an aspiring influential person makes when he/she’s about to engage in a very important conversation, is to ask him/herself the question “what should I say?”. This question only puts you in the back foot and sets you up for potential failure. With this question, you’re only figuring out the things to say based on your knowledge, perspective, values, and background. Instead, a good influencer should ask himself/herself the question “what do I need to know?”. It will give you a glimpse of the receiver’s knowledge, perspective, values, background, and context. What is important to them? What motivates them? What puts them in a positive/negative mood? Start focusing on the people you’ll talk to and know more about them. Before you communicate, get to know who’s going to be your audience. The core three-step process of influence: Step 1: Observe. Step 2: Connect. Step 3: Influence. Support the show.

Time stamped show notes: [00:18] Introduction to Shari Alexander [02:11] What got her into this line of work [04:45] She loves this world of influence because it's about mastering words.   [06:19] Things people can do to start being influential.   [7:51] Start by asking: what do I need to know? – if you want to be influential [10:35] Create the conversation ahead of time. [13:00] People want to hide behind the screen because it's easier, safer and more leverageable, but people need to spend time when they're selling to talk to people. [17:43] The lower the price, the less commitment the client has.   [20:43] Ask: is this a tool or a solution?   [20:49] Oftentimes in the entrepreneurial journey you will come across and if you don't know how to use it, it won't work.   [23:09] Her ambitions and new projects.   [28:42] Tools that can make someone influential [31:55] Influence is communication with a purpose. You have to get comfortable with the idea that you want something from people. [33:34] People should communicate in a thoughtful manner, instead of communicating on autopilot. [36:09] You have to be aware of being overly authentic cannot help you. Think of what is going to serve you best.   [38:13] You have to be specific.   [39:41] Influential triggers: (1) quid pro quo, (2) higher significance [41:50] The people you can turn into an asset, can be the ones that you give money to, but they will be the least reliable.   [42:18] The person that you recruit that can be an asset are the people who do it for the higher significance.   [44:05] Framework people can use right now- the influential vibes – five things you can look for in your mark [44:39] Five influential vibes: (1) Values: what are important to them? [45:11] You can't influence someone that you're judging. [45:29] Five influential vibes: (2) Identifiers – what are the labels they put on themselves? [46:17] Five influential vibes: (3) Beliefs – what are the stories they tell about their world? Very linked to values [47:01] Five influential vibes: (4) Emotional triggers – what puts them in a positive or negative space? [47:47] Five influential vibes: (5) Secret goals and desires – what are they aspiring to? What are their higher goals?   Three key points:   Influence is communication with a purpose. You have to get comfortable with the idea that you want something from people. You have to be aware of being overly authentic cannot help you. Think of what is going to serve you best.   VIBES – Values, Identifiers, Beliefs, Emotional triggers, Secret goals and desires.   Resources mentioned: Sean Stevenson Last Question: Sign up for the email list. One of the fundamental tenets of sales I emphasize on this show is selling with integrity. So why would I suggest you learn what con artists already know? Because it's the exact same technique everyone uses to grow their influence, whether they are a con artist, a trial attorney, a CIA operative or anyone else. On this episode of Grow My Revenue influence coach and author Shari Alexander joins us to look at the fascinating topic of influence. She's explored the what influence actually is, why influence isn't inherently good or bad, and how to use the 3 step process she's uncovered used by the most influential people in the world. Listen to this episode and discover: - Why do so many people shy away from building their influence? - What is the hourglass theory of conversation? - The role curiosity plays in establishing rapport and connection. - Elicitation vs interrogation: what is the difference? Shari gives an example. - Is there such a thing as too many questions? Episode Overview When Shari began studying influence and communication she was fascinated to find that no matter who was wielding the influence, con artist or CIA operative or trial attorney, they were using the same patterns and strategy. She was even more astounded to realize how little leaders knew about this strategy, especially as compared to con artists. The strategy she observed is a three step process she calls observe, connect and influence. Most of us, especially sales people, want to jump to the third step (influence) and learn all about it. You've probably heard someone say "I want to grow my influence". And while that's a healthy approach it falls short of the first two steps, and often leads to increased risk on the part of the influencer and the influencee. On today's episode Shari explains what each of these steps are and why they are necessary to the step after it, what we can learn from the long con game played by con artists, as well as the pivotal part curiosity plays in creating rapport, connection and, ultimately, influence. Observation. The first step in influence is observation. You're looking for certain things in the person you are wanting to influence, you observe certain ways you can connect with them and certain things you can talk about so you can move on to the next step: rapport. Rapport. The second step, rapport, is simply about building likability with the person you are influencing. You are finding ways for them to like you, and for you to like them. This is how and when you build trust: both of which are critical pieces that need to be present before you move into step three, influence. Influence. The final step is influence. This step is where you actually make the ask. If you've done the other two steps effectively you often don't need to know much about this step, but having a few techniques here will help. The reality is all of us want to be seen, heard and appreciated, but very few of us are giving it. So when a con artist provides this to a mark it becomes addictive to the mark, and they'll give anything to get another "hit". There's so much valuable and insightful information shared on today's episode of Grow My Revenue! Be sure to listen in to hear it all.

Shari Alexander (@ShariAlexander on twitter) joins host Craig Price to talk about influence. Influence means many things to many people, people are always trying to be influential without being influenced. It's a weird dynamic. Thankfully, Shari has researched and studied what even she calls the "Dark Arts" of influence to learn how to use it ethically and effectively in business. The two discuss con-men and cult leaders, how observation of both the body and content (what is being said)  is a key to understanding how to be influential, the possibility that Shari's subconscious might sound just like Craig and some myths about lie detectors. If you want to be more influential in your life and your business, be sure to listen to this one! You can learn more about Shari at her website http://ObserveConnectInfluence.com APP BONUS: Download a helpful profiling tool PDF.
