Season 5 Episode 5: *Re-Release* The Murder of Melissa Tremblay (S4 EP18) The purpose of this re-release is to take you back and acclimate you to the facts involving the murder of Melissa Tremblay. We previously release this episode in Season 4 Episode 18. Tomorrow we will have an update to her case as the second trial for the accused has now taken place. Original Episode Description: Melissa Tremblay was only 11 years old when she was found murdered on Monday September 12, 1988 in Lawrence Massachusetts. She had gone missing the afternoon before nearby the Lasalle Social Club in Lawrence. The autopsy revealed that little Melissa or "Missy" as her friends called her, had been beaten, stabbed twice in her chest and her liver and her throat has been slashed. She also had a fractured skull and a large bruise on her back. Her left leg was also severed by means of her body being put on the train tracks at B&M Railroad. While police investigated all leads, the case went cold until 2014 when authorities teamed up with the company Identifiers to develop a genealogy profile from DNA. Armed with this profile, police made an arrest for her murder on April 22, 2022. The suspect was extradited to Massachusetts to face charges and the judicial process, however, a guilty verdict still hasn't been handed down and he remains behind bars awaiting a second trial. Cookies, Identifiers "Silently Stored" on Android phones by Google Apps

Fresh data protection concerns have been raised by a Trinity College Dublin study about storage of cookies, identifiers, and other data on Android phones by Google Play Services, the Google Play store and other pre-installed Google apps. A recent measurement study by Prof. Doug Leith, Professor of Computer Systems in Trinity's School of Computer Science and Statistics, shows that advertising and tracking cookies and other device and user identifiers are sent by Google servers and stored on a handset, even when no Google apps have ever been opened by the user. Professor Doug Leith said: "We all know that our consent is needed before a website stores advertising and tracking cookies when we visit it. The same EU "cookie law", the e-Privacy Directive, also applies to apps running on mobile phones. Cookies stored by apps have received far less attention than web cookies, partly because they are harder to detect, and a closer look at them is long overdue." "Google Play Services and the Google Play store are pre-installed on almost every Android phone. This study shows that they silently store advertising and other tracking cookies and data on people's phones. No consent for this is sought by Google, and there is no way to block these cookies. " "This study is a wake-up call to the Irish Data Protection Commissioner to enforce EU data protection rules and start properly protecting Irish and EU users of Android phones." The main findings of the study are as follows: 1) Advertising analytics cookies, links to track clicks/views of adverts, and device identifiers associated with advertising are downloaded and stored on the handset. 2) Tracking cookies are downloaded and stored by the Google Play store app and then transmitted to Google servers alongside analytics data reporting user interactions with the Play store app (searches, page views etc). 3) The Google Android ID is sent by Google servers and stored to the handset by Google Play Services. Previous studies have shown this identifier is sent in many transmissions made by Google Play Services and the Google Play store to Google servers. It acts as a persistent device and user identifier, which can only be changed by factory resetting the phone. 4) Analytics cookies used for A/B testing of changes to Google apps are downloaded and stored on the handset by Google Play Services and then transmitted alongside app telemetry data to Google servers. 5) Multiple other cookies and identifiers which can act to uniquely identify the handset and/or user are also downloaded and stored on the handset.

AI generated images are getting an identifier  Images created by Open AI's DALL-E technology will now come with a new label, a CR in a circle up in the top left corner. That's the mark that's going to be on images produced by a range of AI companies. The only trouble there is it can pretty easily be cropped out.   Open AI will also be adding metadata to the image file. While it's a nice idea, it's wildly impractical. If you take a screenshot of the image, the metadata disappears. If you post it online, the metadata isn't easily visible, or can even be wiped.  But the same tech actually shows promise for verifying reality. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is working with camera companies, and even newsrooms, to embed metadata in real images to verify their authenticity. It will stay as the image is edited and be able to be verified using an online tool with the full history.     You'll be hearing a lot about Gemini  Google's Bard and Duet are being merged under the new name. Gemini will be the name of their large language model and there'll be Pro and Ultra versions. It's part assistant, part chatbot, part search engine — likely the future of Google.    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are obsessed with our identifiers, aren't we?  We think that who we are, our personality/identity, are things like our work status, relationship status, family role, gender, race, nationality, physical attributes, religious beliefs, political views etc etc.  But this is not the whole picture because there is more - we are more than what our egoic mind is telling us.So I'm diving into the ancient yogic scriptures with fellow yoga teacher Debs Albon to find out what wisdom is offered there about who we really are and why we are here. And what we find described in the Taittiriya Upanishad (500-600 BC) is a map we can follow that will enlighten us: the Pancha Maya Koshas (Five Sheaths). We are all made up of five layers (think Russian doll) that together make up our whole being: the physical body (annamaya kosha), the breath/energy body (pranamaya kosha), the mind/ego (manomaya kosha), the higher mind/intuition/deeper wisdom (vijnanamaya kosha) and bliss body (anandamaya kosha).  It's just a case of cultivating and deepening our awareness of what each of these offers which ultimately will give us a sense of freedom.  Because being controlled and driven by our own and others' expectations is exhausting! The good news is that we all have this capacity within us, no need to be a "special" guru.  This is a level playing field we can access in this lifetime.Debs and I are excited to be offering the Pancha Maya Koshas as the theme for a retreat being held in Kerala, India 19-29 March 2024 at the Neeleshwar Hermitage Hotel, along with author and meditation teacher Alistair Shearer!  Go to my website Home Page for more info - do join us!Find Debs:Instagram: @yoga_with_debs

Data Privacy Detective - how data is regulated, managed, protected, collected, mined, stolen, defended and transcended.

Decentralized identifiers or “DIDs”. Tune in for an exploration how blockchain and pseudonymization can systematically improve data security and increase users' control over their digital identities. Our tour guide is Phillip Shoemaker, the Executive Director of identity.com, a non-profit that provides tools for developers to help organizations identify individuals without compromising their security or privacy. Through this approach, enterprises can de-couple personal identities from users, providing instead a separate digital identity for the user that is not linked to a phone number, address, Social Security number, or other means of identifying the user whose data is otherwise at risk. Learn what individuals can do to urge governments, regulators, and businesses to arm digital systems with defenses that prevent malicious actors to hack masses of personal data that are then used to steal and misuse identities and assets. As standards are being developed for software, IoT devices, and digital infrastructure, consider the role of DIDs as a best practice to be adopted broadly.
