Welcome to Jamie's Journey the show where I talk pretty much about whatever I want. No agenda, no structure, just real conversations about real life. I'm Jamie Kienholz, and today we're diving into a topic that's often surrounded by misconceptions: women and weightlifting. I'll be debunking some of the most common myths surrounding women and resistance training. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned gym-goer, this episode is packed with insights to help you make informed choices about strength training. Let's get started!Myth 1 - Weightlifting Makes Women BulkyThe first myth we're tackling today is the idea that weightlifting will make women bulky. This is a biggie and one that often discourages women from adding weights to their workouts. In reality, gaining significant muscle mass requires a combination of intense training, specific nutrition, and, often, genetic predisposition. For most women, simply engaging in resistance training a few times a week will lead to increased muscle tone and strength—not bulk.Women generally have lower levels of testosterone compared to men, which makes it harder to gain significant muscle mass. What weightlifting does do is help women achieve a leaner, more toned physique. Plus, it improves metabolic rate, meaning you'll burn more calories even at rest.Myth 2 - Cardio is More Effective for Weight LossAnother common myth is that cardio is the best way to lose weight. While cardio has its benefits, resistance training is crucial for effective weight management.Resistance training helps build lean muscle, which is more metabolically active than fat. This means it helps increase your resting metabolic rate—so you're burning more calories even when you're not exercising. For comprehensive fitness, a balanced routine that includes both cardio and strength training is most beneficial. Myth 3 - Weights Aren't for Women of All AgesSome might believe that weightlifting is only for younger women, but resistance training is valuable at any age.Weightlifting is especially beneficial for women as they age. It helps maintain bone density, combats muscle loss, and enhances functional fitness, which is crucial for daily activities. Women of any age can start weightlifting—safely and effectively—with the right guidance.Myth 4 - You Need a Gym Membership to Lift WeightsLastly, the myth that you need a gym membership or expensive equipment to engage in resistance training. Not true!Home workouts using bodyweight, resistance bands, or even everyday items like water bottles can be highly effective. It's all about consistency and progressively challenging your muscles. There you have it—four common myths about women and weightlifting, debunked. Weightlifting is not just for building muscle; it's a key component of a healthy lifestyle that benefits women in diverse ways, from boosting metabolism to enhancing mental health. If you're interested in starting your weightlifting journey or have questions about incorporating it into your routine, feel free to message me on. Empower yourself with knowledge, and don't let myths hold you back.If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave us a review. With the Global Refugee Forum (GRF) approaching, most of the planning focus has been on resettlement and complementary pathways pledges that will be announced at the December gathering and the number of refugees that states are committing to admit. Far less attention is being given to the crucial issues of how countries will reach their goals, whether the necessary capacity and infrastructure exist, and if there is effective coordination between the state and nonstate actors involved at different levels. Effective communication and collaboration between local and national authorities are essential to ensure that resettlement and complementary pathways pledges are grounded in the realistic capacity and goodwill of local governments. Engaging with these local authorities, who often oversee reception and integration processes, can also enhance post-arrival planning and, therefore, refugees' integration prospects. Recent responses to the displacement of Ukrainians underscored the benefits of involving local authorities, as they have played a crucial role in identifying housing solutions and providing informal integration support through innovative local-national coordination and communication. This MPI Europe discussion considers how municipalities and other key stakeholders can be engaged in informing and delivering on the 2024 resettlement and complementary pathways pledges. Featuring findings from the recent publication Improving Stakeholder Coordination in Refugee Resettlement: A Path to More Effective, Inclusive Programs, this webinar explores opportunities for effective multi-level engagement ahead of the GRF.

You may have seen headlines the last few weeks saying things like "Exercise is More Effective than Medication for Mental Health" and "It's Not Just Exercise that Improves your Mental Health – Intensity and Type Matters Too." The research that is driving all these headlines comes from Dr. Ben Singh's team at the University of South Australia, and he's our guest on this week's episode. The study that has caught everyone's attention has been described as “the most comprehensive synthesis to date of evidence regarding the effects of all modes of physical activity on symptoms of depression, anxiety and psychological distress in adult populations.” Their team pulled together systematic reviews spanning numerous exercise modalities, mental health disorders, and patient populations to synthesize a comprehensive overview of the current literature. The article has done the research equivalent of "breaking the internet." As of this episode posting, it has an Altmeric Attention Score of 2957 (and rising), it has been picked up by 195 news outlets, and it has already been cited in three academic articles despite only being published a couple months ago. For context, any score over 20 is considered quite good, and Dr. Singh's previous high was 60. This article is already in the top 1% of all research ever tracked by Altmetric. In the episode we discuss how different types of physical activity may be more or less beneficial for different conditions, the importance of including exercise professionals in the treatment of mental health disorders, and the many obstacles to normalize exercise as a treatment modality. For an example of the insights Dr. Singh's team found, resistance training appears to be most effective for depression, whereas pilates and yoga were more effective for anxiety. Both outperformed aerobic exercise despite previous guidelines that prioritized it. But tune in to the conversation before you draw your conclusions, because Dr. Singh discusses limitations of the existing research, and how much work there is left to do. You can find the original article HERE. You can find Dr. Singh on Twitter.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Comparing Health Interventions in Colombia and Nigeria: Which are More Effective and by How Much?, published by Alejandro Acelas on March 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: Nigeria bears 10 times the burden of communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases per capita than Colombia, despite both countries having similar health expenditures to combat these diseases. Applying the SNT framework suggests that health interventions are around 10 times more cost-effective in Nigeria even when comparing only the poorest regions within each country. Why I decided to work on this topic Chatting with the members of my EA university group in Colombia, I noticed many of them were mainly interested in contributing to problems that affected their home country. Although Colombia is far from being one of the poorest countries in the world, various regions of the country still suffer from similar problems as less developed countries. I thought there might be a chance that we found opportunities with similar cost-effectiveness as those that EA tends to prioritize in the area of health and development. Given that some students from my EA group were considering making career decisions based on a similar perception, I thought it worthwhile to spare a couple of hours to critically evaluate this line of reasoning, in the hope that this would allow them to make a more informed decision. Ideally, this research would answer the following questions: Within the ways to help in Colombia, which problems/interventions represent unusually cost-effective opportunities to help? How do the best opportunities identified in Colombia compare with the best opportunities abroad? Unfortunately, both questions are too broad to cover them appropriately in the short time I dedicated to this work (approx. 40 hours). In order to make progress I decided focus on the much more narrow question: In aggregate, how cost-effective do health interventions addressing communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional diseases in Colombia seem when compared to interventions in the same area in a substantially poorer country? Although this question corresponds to only a fragment of our initial concern, a couple of considerations lead me to think that an answer to this question would still be informative to people considering whether to focus their career on helping others within the Colombian territory (even if they don't plan to focus specifically on health interventions). First, health interventions aimed at fighting communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional diseases (from now on CMNN interventions) form a substantial fraction of the EA portfolio of interventions focused on improving human welfare in the short term, which is the focus of most of the students I know who are considering whether to direct their careers at Colombian causes. Second, my impression is that the results of this investigation support certain heuristics for identifying impact opportunities that can be useful even outside health causes. I'll say more about that in the conclusions section. Approach I use the Scale, Neglectedness and Tractability (SNT) framework to estimate the cost-effectiveness ratio of CMNN interventions between Colombia and Nigeria. Besides making the comparison for the two countries as a whole, I'll also try to compare the poorest regions within each country to see if that changes the conclusions. I chose Nigeria somewhat arbitrarily, mainly because several of GiveWell's recommended charities have operations in Nigeria (suggesting that there are unusually effective opportunities in the country) and because among the countries where GiveWell-recommended charities operate, Nigeria It is approximately in the middle of the distribution of poverty incidence. Percentage of the population living below the In...
Recognizing when to make changes in your pricing is an important part of managing prices in any business. I've had many people on the show who shared with us that it took them quite a long time to both realize and then accept that they would need to change prices in their business. You may struggle with that as well. And it often has quite a negative impact on business, especially growing a younger business. This is why it's so important for you to be able to identify and then monitor the main price drivers that affect what you charge. If you're periodically checking those things and/or when you're monitoring the ups and downs of those price drivers, you'll be able to not just see the signs that you need to make a change. Often you'll see those signs before they become a real issue. You can get ahead of things - awesome! You'll have more time to mitigate circumstances related to those price drivers (like find a new supplier if the current one's price has become too high). Plus you gift yourself more time to decide what to do with your price and how to implement any changes in the most effective way.In This Episode: In this solocast episode I share with you 5 signs that'll help you know when to make those important changes to your pricing. Use what you learn to think reflect on the things that are impacting your prices. Make a plan so you can keep a watchful eye on those drivers and how they change. It'll help you be more prepared and ready for what needs to comes next.Enjoy the episode and of course if you have questions you can always reach out and ask.Podcast Highlights0:00 Intro2:11 Why Your Prices are Going to Change4:08 Be Careful in Communicating the Price Change5:45 Some Ways are More Effective than Others7:33 Wrapping It Up*********Reach Out, Connect or Book a Call with JaneneGet started improving your business. Can An Old Technology Make Industrial Drones Safer and More Effective? Zach Adams is Co-Founder and Chief Engineer for Pitch Aeronautics, manufacturer of a unique drone for up-close, touch-based, and robotic tasks. Among the most dangerous jobs in the United States is climbing infrastructure to perform inspections and maintenance as well as performing power line maintenance. While today's drones are good at taking video, they are not well suited to get close or actually interact with the surface of an object. Consequently, technicians are sent up on ropes, ladders, scaffolding, cranes, and sometimes even hanging from helicopters to perform this work. Pitch Aeronautics' Astria Drone is specifically optimized for touch based tasks. It has a unique configuration that can hold a 10 pound payload on a long horizontal arm to keep it away from the rotors and allow it to interact with a building, bridge, tower, wind turbine and powerline. It's flown to the area using a first-person-view camera and goggles. Astria then overlays key flight and job information on the goggles so the operator can conduct the mission. . Astria positions the payload near the target by using a cyclorotor for lateral control. Cyclorotors are unique propellers that can near instantaneously push the drone forward, backward, left, or right. This allows Astria to compensate for wind gusts and fly more precisely. It can create and change thrust 5-10x faster than traditional drones. Cyclorotors have been used on tugboats and ferries for nearly a century for the same reason. Zach is recognized as a leading authority on cyclorotor technology. He is the named inventor on multiple cyclorotor patents and has published extensively on the topic. He holds a BS in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue. In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Zach talks about Pitch Aeronautics, its innovative Astria drone and how the company's patented cyclorotor technology is making dangerous jobs safer.

Homily for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B, October 16 and 17, 2021 “Those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.” The Apostles desire greatness and Jesus says the key is a willingness to serve. 10 days ago, our youth groups were reflecting on the virtue of Magnanimity, which just means a striving for a greatness of soul. We watched a video put out by the Knights of Columbus on this virtue. It talked about this very Gospel passage, and what it means to be a great leader: SERVICE You can strive to be the best janitor, the best husband the best wife, the best parent, the best student the best plumber you can be…wherever you find yourself you can strive for becoming great, and that will be attained in proportion to how well you serve those under you. I find great value in getting down among the trenches with you all, setting up tables and chairs for dinners or Oktoberfest, setting up stuff for the youth group, helping clean up after events, and not leaving until the cleaning is done. Trying to help fix things when I can, going out once a month to the sick and shut ins, helping set up for Mass – I truly feel that there is no job in the parish that I am above. And I think, because of that approach, I think I am a better leader. On your sports teams, if you are a star or a senior, do you lord it over those under you or do you help carry out the bag of balls to practice even though it is not expected? At work, do you help those under you with their tasks, even though you could tell them to do it themselves? At the parish, do you help out even though it is not required nor expected? In your family, do you lord it over your siblings or help them accomplish their task? “Those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant.” The Apostles wanted to be APPOINTED to leadership positions, but Jesus was a very practical guy. He encourages servant leadership precisely for the reason that it is MORE EFFECTIVE than a simple appointment to a position! May we trust in Jesus, may we seek to be great not by simply being put in a position of authority, but by earning the trust of those who we have been asked to lead.

Covid 19, the global viral pandemic, the world and it people are in panic mode. Now there is a mad rush to produce vaccines to stem the tide. How are vaccines made, and what is the margin of safety we should expect before taking one. Has the phamacuetical industry proven itself where we the PEOPLE should trust them..... what is their DOCUMENTED history here in America and around the world? Are there alternatives that have proven to be MORE EFFECTIVE and safe? Lets examine what we are faced with, the evidenc and make an INFORMED DECISION.
Innovation never stops. Alongside the tools that are making manual processes digital, there are also a new breed of tools which are fundamentally changing the way we go about our job. How we structure and carry out tenders hasn't really changed much over the last 20 years. E-sourcing tools have been around since the late 1990s, and have been pretty mainstream for the past 15 or so years (I used them myself way back in 2003)! There are a lot of cool apps out there that are disrupting the old-school world of procurement. One of these concentrates on simplifying, shortening and using game theory to influence the outcome of sourcing activities. Bid Ops was recognised for its disruptive contribution to the procuretech space when it won Best Startup award at the 2019 Digital Procurement World conference in Amsterdam. This week, I interview Founder and CEO Edmund Zagorin on how they've grown, how Covid-19 has changed the landscape and how they're growing despite cuts to procurement and IT budgets through an innovative business model that delivers value from day 1 to their client base. Making e-Sourcing Faster and More Effective using AI and Game Theory: Edmund Zagorin from Bid Ops2:09 Bid Ops recently won the best startup award at DPW 2019. So, has that propelled growth for BidOps, or is it more down to Covid-19 and everyone needing to deliver more, faster, and with fewer resources? 5:42 I ask Edmund how does BidOps differentiates itself from a standard eSourcing tool e.g. SAP Ariba for large organisations, or MarketDojo and RFP360 as a more accessible, cloud based solution for all businesses. We talk about “Best-in-Breed” cloud based solutions and how the “unbundling" of procurement tech is niching down into more specific applications focusing on one specific area. 12:47 BidOps straddles the two niches of being an eSourcing tool and also a platform to utilise AI for simulation of negotiations. I ask Edmund what he sees as being the biggest challenge here, and whether he sees a move-away from more traditional ERP systems for managing RFQs and tenders. Edmund's answer about using technology for Sourcing versus using it for P2P optimisation is an interesting insight. Sourcing offers so many opportunities beyond traditional automation and digitisation of operational and transactional practices. 18:15 Budgets are tight right now, so I ask Edmund to tell us a little about how Bid Ops has tried to combat this with a more innovative pricing model. 23:00 It's a bit of a hornet's nets from a legal perspective when you work on a gain share model. How does one prove a saving? Because not everything has a last paid price… 25:58 Edmund talks about having to do more with less, and how using gain share to enable immediate implementation of a solution without a lengthy budget approval process is allowing teams to drive results faster. Especially in times where headcount and budgetary constraints are a very real issue for many procurement teams. 27:07 How to deal with sceptics: how is Bid Ops able to distinguish and differente itself from some of the more traditional e-sourcing tools which some of us in the procurement space have had a love/hate relationship with over the years? There's a great discussion here about how mutually de-risking the first quote and using game theory in negotiations can lead to a more successful (and shorter, more convenient) outcome from sourcing tenders. 32:17 Finally, I ask Edmund the best way to get in touch to learn more about Bid Ops. If you're interested in giving this tool a try, as a certified partner I can also help you learn more about what it can do and connect you to the Bid Ops team for a demo. How to connect with Edmund: https://bidops.com (Bid Ops website) https://www.linkedin.com/in/edmund-zagorin-41291b13/ (Edmund's LinkedIn profile) Send Edmund an Email How to connect with James:...
Rarely do we watch a movie (especially one with lots of CGI from 2004) that somehow is even MORE EFFECTIVE now than it was when released. But TDAT delivers on all fronts, not to mention a smorgasbord of disasters! We talk about looting, making out at the end of the world, and when it's ok to burn books!
