William Tyler is an American guitarist and composer known for his unique blend of fingerstyle guitar, ambient, and post-rock influences. Hailing from Nashville, Tyler's music weaves intricate, melodic soundscapes that are often both introspective and expansive. Critics have praised Tyler for his ability to evoke deep emotion through his instrumental work. Pitchfork described Goes West as "a stunning meditation on the American landscape, both real and imagined. “ Through his work, Tyler has carved a distinctive niche within the instrumental music world, drawing comparisons to guitar greats like John Fahey and Leo Kottke. His newest record, Time Indefinite, was released by Psychic Hotline in spring of 2025. In this episode, recorded live at the Big Ears Festival in March of 2025, he talks about how songs by Scott Joplin, The Troggs, and Popol Vuh were formative for him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since releasing his first solo album in 2010, William Tyler has become associated with the so-called cosmic country style – his music has tended to be expansive, atmospheric, clearly rooted in Americana but with an experimental edge. Now comes Tyler's new record, Time Indefinite – an album that might, paradoxically, be his most modern or avant-garde sounding. “Crafted by razor blade and chainsaw, it's destructive and hopeful, a mirror and a dream, internal and external, unsettled and peaceful, non linear and all at once, analogue and digital, broken and repaired then broken again, surprising and nostalgic, but it's a product of its time, definitely”, (Jake Davis, via Instagram.) William Tyler, along with producer, engineer, and synthesist Jake Davis play some of the songs, in-studio. Set list: 1. Star of Hope 2. Anima Hotel 3. Concern

This week, a return appearance from William Tyler. As a guitarist and sideman, William has worked with the Silver Jews, Lambchop, and other forward leaning acts, balancing a deep understanding of tradition with experimental energy. His own records have found him drifting from Takoma School style finger picking to a zone that hovers in-between krautrock and country; in recent years, he's expanded even further, with incredible beat driven collaborations with Four Tet and the fried psychedelia of his full band Secret Stratosphere project.  His latest work is called Time Indefinite, out this week via Psychic Hotline. It's a strange and meditative record, and it's a new high water mark for Tyler. On this episode of the show, we toss out the script in favor of following Tyler's thoughts; like the indefinite time his new album references, linearity isn't always the focus in this talk. And while we touch on more than a few heavy topics, including addiction, climate change, and the sad state of satirical art, this one is an entry in our "hangout episodes" series, the DAW rolling along just for good measure.  You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. I've fallen in love in this bar, had my heart broken, made business deals, commiserated and celebrated everything along the way. With a decade under their belt, many Nashvillians can say the same. Duke's is celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a parking lot blowout this Saturday featuring music from some of old Nashville's finest including William Tyler, Be Your Own Pet and Heavy Cream. Ahead of the celebration, I sat down with co-owner Sara Nelson to talk about the bar's impact on the city.

Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death.  Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp.  Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. This week on Transmissions, return guest Yasmin Williams. On October 4th, she releases Acadia via Nonesuch Records. It's her long awaited follow up to 2021's Urban Driftwood, and like that record, it's beautiful—a showcase for a one-of-a-kind artist. And while the focus remains Williams' fluid and lyrical guitarwork, she's joined by a roster of ringers to help fill out the corners: Aoife O'Donovan, Dom Flemons, Kaki King, William Tyler, and Darklingside and Rich Ruth, whose vocal and synthesizer contributions can be heard on the recently released first single, "Virga." Williams first came back on the show way back in the lockdown days, but life has changed greatly for her since then. She discusses some of those changes, and opens up about her desire to create with Acadia something of a refuge from the chaos of the world. Even though the record finds her joined by an expanded cast, it feels even more personal. In carving out enough space for herself, Williams has opened more than enough for the listener too. Ahead of her fall tour dates with Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka and an appearance at London's Pitchfork Music Fest in November, Williams joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a rousing conversation. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Sometimes you feel like you've know someone forever... well at least since that one time he came to your small town during his "Impossible Truth" tour back in 2013 and played your local coffee shop. I'm talking about our southern brother, William Tyler. A legend among greats, Tyler played with the likes of Silver Jews and Lambchop prior to launching his solo career around 2010. He has crossed paths with the late Jack Rose, rocked with KY legend Bonnie "Prince" Billy and so many wonderful artists over the years. A Tennessee boy born and raised, Tyler grew up with his sister, whom he started the Stone Fox venue with in Nashville back in the day. Eventually signing with Merge Records, Tyler went on to release a large body of work with titles such as "Goes West", "Music From First Cow" and his Thrill Jockey debut entitled "Lost Futures" with Marisa Anderson back in 2021. Eventually relocating to LA for a few years, he has since been back in the south during the Pandemic crisis to reset and figure out his vision for the next chapter. Tyler is true blue and we couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you. Enjoy!

The contemporary silent film, Electric Appalachia, is a surprising, and surprisingly poignant look at how the coming of electricity changed Tennessee. Using archival footage, the film was put together by Eric Dawson, the director at TAMIS (the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound) and offers “a meditation on electricity and modernity in East Tennessee”. This silent film was created with two musicians in mind – guitarist William Tyler and harpist and synthesist Mary Lattimore, who add a moving, occasionally cosmic score. Listen to selections from their collaborative live soundtrack to Electric Appalachia, recorded at Brookfield Place.

The Third Men podcast is excited to welcome to the show (for the first time!) the extraordinary guitarist, composer and oft-Third Man Records collaborator Mr. William Tyler. In this all-new extended interview, we'll talk with William about his incredible career - from solo albums to secret origins and everything in between. We'll also deep-dive into the ever-changing landscape of Nashville, what Third Man has meant to the city since planting its flag there nearly 15 years ago, and of course William's musical connections to Jack white - both through several live TMR releases as well as opening for Jack during the Boarding House Reach tour in 2018. We'd like to thank William Tyler for joining us on the show, and hope you all enjoy this interview as much as we enjoyed conducting it! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

They use this backdrop, along with their excellent guitar instrumentals and interesting use of electronics to paint a sonic picture of an alternate reality that never materialized. The Rolling Stones 1969 record Let it Bleed put a cap on the decade and in many ways was a response to the 60s counter-culture movement. Recorded in the midst of the band's own turmoil, the record provides good perspective and not to mention produced two all time classic songs. Here's the album recommendations from the show:Marisa Anderson, William Tyler – Lost FuturesThe Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed (1969)What do you think of these records? Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, with your host Jason P. Woodbury. This week on the show, we're joined by Andrew Khedoori and Mark Gowing of Longform Editions.  Home to extended experimental works by previous Transmissions guests like William Tyler, Carlos Nino, and Angel Bat Dawid—plus, many more avant composers and music makers—it's tempting to think of Longform Editions as a “record label,” but Andrew and Mark consider it an online gallery for musical works. Every two months, they upload four new entries. On June 15th, the same day this podcast is released, they offer up a new batch, featuring Sam Prekop of Sea and Cake, Foodman, Megan Alice Clune, and Nailah Hunter. Mark and Andrew have a long history in the music industry and are lifelong record collectors. They joined us to discuss the way Longform works, how they crafted it as a sustainable project for both artists who contribute and themselves, the process of deep listening, and much more.  Thanks for listening to Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions. Born and raised in Rahway, New Jersey, Pisapia migrated to Nashville in the mid-1990s with his brother, the drummer Marc Pisapia, as the namesake members of Joe, Marc's Brother. Following its Rick Clark- produced self-titled debut, the band quickly became progenitors of a burgeoning indie pop and rock scene that included artists such as Josh Rouse, David Mead and Lambchop. In 2000, the release of the Robin Eaton, Roger Moutenot and Brad Jones-produced Around the Year with Joe, Marc's Brother cemented the band's reputation as masters of the pop-rock genre. While Joe, Marc's Brother as a unit now performs infrequently, Pisapia continues to record and perform as a solo artist. As a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work as a member of Guster and k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang. He co- produced and co-wrote Guster's 2006 release, Ganging Up On the Sun, an album that cracked Billboard's Top 25 and was one of the best selling internet albums of the year.  He did the same on the band's 2010 Easy Wonderful. He produced and penned the title track for Lang's 2011 album, Sing It Loud, and acted as music director for the accompanying tour.As a producer and mixer, he's worked on some of the finest indie rock and pop and Americana records to come out of Nashville in the last few years. Among his credits are: Ben Folds Five's The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind, The Hush Kids (Self Titled,) Zac Clark (Self Titled,) Drew Holcolmb And The Neighbors' Medicine and Souvenir, Chuck Mead's Free State Serenade, Josh Rouse's Love In The Modern Age, Courtney Jaye's The Exotic Sounds Of Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz's While We're Becoming, William Tyler's Lost Colony E.P. and Paper Hats, The Silver Seas' Alaska and ThePierces' self-titled album.  When the Grammy Award-winning band Fun. needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Pisapia. In 2016 Pisapia collaborated with singer/ songwriter Kate York for the duet E.P. “Kate York And Joe Pisapia.” The song “All My Worry” was featured in the 2016 “Magnolia Mix Tape” vinyl release. 2018 was a watershed year for Pisapia as he released two full length solo albums. https://www.joepisapia.net/https://www.facebook.com/JoePisapiaMusic/https://www.instagram.com/joepisapia/?hl=enhttps://joepisapia.bandcamp.com/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For Sponsorship Information or Questions -  ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

Musician William Tyler spent the month of May in Green River, Utah as an Epicenter Frontier Fellow. During that month, he created a radio play called Twilight Zephyr. It's an audio collage made up of field recordings, live guitar compositions, narration and more. On the latest This Week in Moab, we speak with Tyler about composing this piece, his time in rural Utah, and getting to know the wind element in the desert. [Music in This Week in Moab is Holizna Raps by Holizna] // And after the interview, Twilight Zephyr! The radio play begins just after 26 minutes. Get ready for sounds illuminating themes of both vastness and closeness. "Out here, radio floats above the canyons and the Swell. When the phone service drops and nothing is there but the horizon, the earthen static of the radio still bounces around the ether and brings us the news, reminds us that we are all just trying to get the frequency." - William Tyler // Twilight Zephyr Credits: Written by William Tyler. Narrated by Jonathan Gottschalk. Produced by Serah Mead. Recorded by William Tyler in various locations throughout Southeastern Utah. Guitar recordings at The Tank in Rangely, Colorado were engineered by Michael van Wagoner and Samantha Light Shade. The Terry Tempest Williams piece was voiced by Frances Erlandson.
