I imagine that every entrepreneur pursuing their dreams feels discomfort at some point. And - do you know what’s on the other side of that discomfort? Growth, perseverance, strength, empowerment, and so much more! This week on the Epic Success podcast, I talk with my good friend and creator of the Millionaire Girl’s Club, Jill Stanton, on her path to success, the fears she had to let go to get there, and how she’s working to continue to pursue massive growth and momentum in her business. Let me tell you - Jill is the REAL. DEAL. She just gets it, and I’m so thankful for her friendship. She knows what she wants and she goes after it, all while showing up as her authentic self. The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are:   “If you don’t lean into the discomfort, how are you ever going to become someone you’re proud of?”   Stepping into growth is rarely comfortable. We’re often met with doubts, fears, and negative thoughts about being judged by others. The good news? Most people aren’t constantly thinking about you, and you have the power to choose to be committed to growth, even when you’re faced with discomfort. [28:00]   “It’s all fixable.”   You won’t be the best at something you’ve never done before, and that’s okay! In fact, no one expects you to be - BUT you can work towards excellence. If you want to reach a point of excellence in something you’ve never done before, you can absolutely get there - you just have to lean into wanting it bad enough to put in the work and learn the skills necessary to get there. [30:39]   “Money is a tool.”   One of the biggest shifts for Jill in her business was realizing that money is just a tool. It has no meaning other than the meaning you give to it. It’s neutral. More often than not, the feelings we feel (often negative) about money are put there by us, and it’s crucial to acknowledge our money beliefs early on, so that they don’t keep us stuck in the long run. [39:40]   “Playing to win versus playing to not lose.”   This is HUGE. Have you ever shown up in your business and done just enough to get by, but never enough to take it to the next level? Have you ever made excuses or blamed others for why you can’t fully ‘go for it’? Let’s evaluate how we’re showing up in our business - stand behind your offer, ask for the sale, go for it! It will be uncomfortable, but the magic and the ‘real you’ is on the other side of that discomfort. Hey you! Cool concept I’ve been thinking about lately… hear me out on this one…It all kind of started when I was thinking about this stimulus bill (which I wrote about yesterday). I thought of all the corruption, all the politics, all the hidden accounts in the Cayman Islands that senators have….Contrasted with…Forcing restaurants to shut down….Forcing other businesses to close…And then sending them $600 as if that is going to help…And I thought, “How is this possible?” “Are people just evil?”Then it clicked for me, I already knew the answer. It comes from an unlikely source, a book you have probably never read, but a good one. It’s called “Skin in the Game, Hidden Asymmetries in Daily Life” -> https://www.amazon.com/Skin-Game-Hidden-Asymmetries-Daily/dp/042528462XThe book is quite dense and complex, but the core theme is this…The more DISTANT decision makers are from the EFFECTS of their decisions, the WORSE decisions they make. It makes these political misfires make SO MUCH MORE SENSE….Obviously, these politicians never feel even an OUNCE of the effects of their decisions!They sit tight up there on Capitol hill, and are affected 0% by a pandemic like this. In fact, they likely BENEFIT financially from it (because they are rich and own ASSETS which we have discussed previously).It’s the same with ANYTHING in life. The first question you should be asking, before taking advice from anyone is, “Do they have skin in the game?”.“If this all goes sideways or doesn’t work, will they personally be NEGATIVELY affected?” “If not, why am I listening to their opinion?”As we end 2020 and head into uncharted waters, I don’t think there could possibly be a more important question. 2021 may be THE PEAK of a LACK of skin in the game…Everyone trying to TELL you what you should do…How you should behave…How you should FEEL about certain things…In a World that has been forced almost entirely on the internet, TELLING is SO MUCH EASIER than DOING. The “tellers” are going to run RAMPANT in 2021. And the “doers” will be right there with them.It will be difficult to distinguish who is who.But it is worth your time and effort to find out. My only promise to you is this.This letter will ONLY EVER be about things in which I have a stake. In which I have MASSIVE skin in the game. Go back and read through all my letters. Any “advice” in them?Yep, I’m deeply concerned with those topics. Because they affect me and my family deeply and I will “go down with the ship” if they go down. In 2021 I would encourage you to get on the boat with a Captain that is willing to go down with his or her ship.Leave the “Captain-less” boats floating away to their own destruction. Alright I need to put a cut off on this lol… You’ve got THIS WEEK to subscribe to “The Kale Letter” in order to get it 5x per week. After that I’m only sending it once hahaThis topic is for EVERYONE reading this, yes, everyone. It’s one of the biggest mistakes I see people make. And it causes some of the most unhappiness as well. It’s called the concept of SUNK COSTS. According to an article in Time Magazine, “The sunk cost effect is the general tendency for people to continue an endeavor, or continue consuming or pursuing an option, if they’ve invested time or money or some resource in it,”The classic example of this?? Yep, you guessed it. That girlfriend or boyfriend that you JUST CAN’T SEEM to get around to dumping… :)Whether you’re married now (like me) or not, we’ve all been there most likely, haha!YOU INVEST SO MUCH TIME, EFFORT, EMOTION, & MONEY into SOMETHING or SOMEONE that it is SO MUCH EASIER to just KEEP GOING rather than FACE THE PAIN of realizing that you WASTED THAT MUCH TIME AND RESOURCE!!I personally think, at least for me, that that sentence above says it all. It’s not that I don’t know the right thing to do.I KNOW I should abandon that marketing campaign, it’s not profitableI KNOW I should fire that employee, they aren’t working hard…I KNOW I should switch from comcast to Verizon, their service is terribleHowever, I spent WEEKS working on that marketing campaign! I spent DAYS on MEETINGS with that employee!And calling comcast customer support is worse than getting a tooth removed!LOL.We’ve all been there, am I right?Here’s the thing though, you’ve GOT to RIP THE BANDAID OFF. By far some of the biggest, most important, most PIVOTAL decisions in my life were when I realized that yes, that time has been wasted…But more importantly, it was CRIMINAL of me to WASTE ANY MORE TIME!!!That’s what you really have to focus on here.Not the past, where the time, money, emotions, and feelings can never be recovered. But on the FUTURE time that you will CONTINUE to waste if you don’t CHANGE!REAL QUICK: - one quick personal example so that you can get on with your day and start thinking about the areas in your life that need to be aggressively pruned to avoid this extremely common cause of unhappiness in your life. 23 Years of BASKETBALL completely ABANDONED. Many of you know this, but I played Division 1 Basketball. I played at Northwestern University in Chicago, Drake University in Iowa, and Duquesne University here in Pittsburgh. Here’s a picture of me at NU, share this letter with someone if you dig the shaggy hair ;-)When I was in fifth grade, I told my dad I wanted to “Play at Duke” and “Play in the NBA”. My dad, a collegiate basketball coach at the time sat me down and said…“Kale, if you want that, you need to work for it. You need to practice, every day.”So I did. From fifth grade up until I took my last shot in a college game at Duquesne in 2016.I worked out.EVERY DAY.literally.Obsession level = Dragged my dad to the gym at 11pm on a Saturday night to rebound.Endless summers traveling the World playing AAU basketball. Then the 24/7 obsession of elite D1 ball. Talk about SUNK COSTS!THOUSANDS of HOURS.Blood, sweat, and literal tears. And then, one day, the ball stopped bouncing. I had a choice to make.A) Pursue a professional career overseas (100% doable & probably the natural route to go in order to not waste my entire life’s work)B) Quit, get a day job, and stay in Pittsburgh. Here’s the point. I’m not special. But this is the point that you can take to the BANK. —->>> Ignoring YEARS of sunk costs and STAYING IN PITTSBURGH was THE SINGLE BEST DECISION I’ve EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. I started multiple businesses worth tens of millions of dollars.I met the love of my life and best friend and married her I became ridiculously involved with the best church on the planetThose 3 things above?Game changer. Game over. I would not be anywhere close to as wealthy, happy, or fulfilled if I didn’t have those 3 things. And the crazy part is, EVERYTHING INSIDE OF ME told me NOT TO DO IT. Your literal BODY will scream NO!Your stomach will hurt. You’ll get headaches. You’ll wake up with crazy dreams.It will HURT for a while. Sunk costs are no joke. They have memories, emotions, and PAIN associated with them. Ripping them off is like ripping off a giant bandaid from the biggest, most infected wound you could ever imagine. But oh, the peace and satisfaction when you’ve done it. I would encourage each of you reading this to do a couple practical things. Ask yourself A) What in my life am I holding on to simply because I put a lot of effort or time into it? B) What in my life am I holding on to simply because I put a lot of MONEY into it?Really think about this. These things might be so in-grained into your psychology that you don’t even notice it. They might be the MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT YOU (you think).That’s okay. Did I ever think I’d be an entrepreneur writing you this letter from my rooftop deck in Pittsburgh?HELL NO. The #1 way to get traction in your business is to get ultra-clear about who you serve. As business owners, we want to help people, specifically people that are in one way or another like us. Whether that is how we are now or similar to who we used to be. Unfortunately, our brain convinces us that we should help EVERYONE. First, course of action - stop shoulding on yourself. The second course of action, pick your favorite. I know you've been taught not to have favorites. But when it comes to the world of marketing, it's not just recommended, it's required to gain traction, stand out and expedite your success rate. But one of the HARDEST parts of being an entrepreneur is nailing down your ideal client. This is why this week in Episode 77 I cover the top reasons why finding and aligning with your ideal client will not only save you time and money but it will help you gain traction and get out of that desperate loop of overwhelm when it comes to marketing. You can listen to the entire episode here. Have you ever said to yourself "If I don't help everyone, there won't be anyone who hires me?" I see a few hands raised and hear a few #preach responses out there. I think if you are walking the path of creating a business, this thought enters your mind at one point or another. It makes sense to the scarcity devil that lives between our ears. But the abundance angel doesn't believe it for a minute. The reality is that if you keep trying to help everyone, you won't be able to help anyone. Simply because you will meld into the background like a landscape in a Monet painting. When you target who you help, it's like hitting the easy button in your marketing. Because you no longer wonder what to say, who you're talking to, whether they are listening or how they will find you. Because you know where they hang out, what they're doing at lunchtime on a Tuesday and what their favorite Netflix binge show is. Most importantly, you understand what is keeping them stuck in their business and causing them to lose sleep at night. In this week's episode, I give you a huge list of what happens when you don't clarify your customer and I'm not going to lie, it's not pretty.  It can add up to thousands of hours wasted and even more money thrown out the window. I'm sold! I'm ready to find my ideal client, but where do I start? Well, I have good news and bad news. The answer starts between your ears. The good news it's not hard to access.  Nine times out of ten you are your ideal client, or you have been in their shoes at some point in your business journey. The bad news, our brains don't always remember where we were and what we're struggling with once we move past that hurdle making it hard to pin down pain points. Regardless, interviewing yourself is a great place to start to define your ideal customer base. Asking questions like what has been my business journey. When I started what was the biggest struggle I faced? How did I overcome the problem? Where do I spend most of my time? Where did I spend most of my time before? You get the idea. Self-interviewing helps you create a baseline for where you were, where you have become and where you are striving to be. People connect with people. Your people are ready to connect with you - so start here to begin to understand them and create that connection. The deeper you dig the faster you will connect. Try searching in: Business Associations Networking Groups Social Media Groups, Pages and Comments Talking To Your Customers Google Look At Your Competition Take that baseline and search out more information about your customer.   If you can arm yourself with as much detail as possible it makes your marketing strategy, content creation and overall life SO MUCH EASIER. I pinky promise! Because you will stop wasting time on social media platforms that will never get you in front of your audience, at coffee meetings with people who can't afford you and most of all cut through the forest and create a pathway for the people who need you most to find you quickly and easily. In the episode, I share two REALLY good examples of how not serving a specific customer will take you off task, have you questioning every business decision you are making and worst of all, delaying or deterring your success because your people can't find you or are confused about whether or not you are the answer to their prayers.  When you are clear, people take out their credit cards. Clarity rings more cash registers than a Black Friday sale. Now it's your turn! Think with me… the biggest demographic phenomemon of the last 60 years… the BABY BOOM generation… they’re retiring at the rate of about 10,000 people per day. A whole lot of them have MONEY, and lots of it. And all of their kids and grandchildren have spread out all over the country. What are these people doing? They’re buying RV’s - in MASSIVE volumes - and taking their home with them all over the country.So what opportunity does this create for me and you… and what is the ACTUAL opportunity that my friend reached out to me about?RV parks, baby! Imagine the benefits of owning a hotel… where you get a very, very high rental price for a very, very small portion of real estate… but you do NOT have to think about things like laundry or furniture or linens or any of the things that makes a hotel so very expensive to establish, operate and own.Instead, what you’re renting out is, essentially, a piece of concrete. A small piece of concrete, where your customers bring THEIR OWN bed and THEIR OWN furniture and THEIR OWN linens. All you do is provide them with a hookup for electricity and water and, if you’re smart, some great amenities, and what do you have? You have a situation where you’re collecting hotel-like nightly rental rates in exchange for a service that is FAR LESS EXPENSIVE and SO MUCH EASIER to provide than with a hotel.But there’s another HUGE benefit to RV parks… lots of them, actually. And this one explains why, we are expecting, conservatively, an internal rate of return of 15-20%+. That benefit is REPEAT BUSINESS! You see, we know, as a sociological fact, that people who use RV parks are, by and large, very habitual in their behavior. Once they find an RV park that they like, chances are they’ll come back every year or two over and over and over again…...and that means not only are the profits in this business VERY HIGH, but they can also be incredibly CONSISTENT.Both of the deals that we’re buying and closing on in the next two weeks are actually ALREADY very profitable… and the REALLY beautiful thing is this: A little money spent wisely goes a REALLY LONG WAY with RV parks. There are two examples I want to share with you, both of which will ABSOLUTELY blow your mind… you’ll see why we are SO UTTERLY THRILLED with this asset class.But before I share those two examples with you, think about this name: Sam Zell. Sam Zell is a LEGENDARY real estate investor, Bloomberg pegs his net worth at $4.4 BILLION. Zell started and currently owns a very large percentage of several publicly-traded REITs - kind of like a mutual fund for real estate investments - and each of those REITs are focused on different real estate segments like commercial real estate, multi-family and… surprise, surprise… RV parks and mobile home parks. And guess which one is outperforming the others? The problem with manifestation is . . . There are a lot of gurus out there that will tell you to just sit around and manifest what you want into your life.  Unfortunately, the key ingredient they leave out, more often than not, is that you have to take intentional action that aligns with what you are trying to bring into your life.  An intention is a contract between your subconscious and conscious mind, but intention will only take you so far in attaining the life you REALLY want to be living. How the heck do I start bringing my intentions into my reality? This week we are diving into some mind work, because believe it or not, if your mind isn't aligned with you what you want in your business (think subconscious running the show) then no matter what tactic, system or method you put into place - you will find yourself right where you are now.  Which is why this mind-stuff is UBER important. Please don't tell me I'm going to have to meditate Alisa! Okay, I won't. But you do, sort of.  You see your subconscious mind is already programmed.  For many of us, years and years of programming in fact - back to about the time we were 8 years old.  We have beliefs and thoughts that we likely don't even know we are caring around (unless we have done a lot of digging to find them out.) The other thing about your subconscious is that it really likes to run the show and to tune into your inner wisdom, which is not always aligned with your subconscious, you need to quiet the mind.  But, I'm getting ahead of myself. In this week's episode, I've laid out 5 specific steps you can take to align your intention with some good old fashioned action steps. Listen to the entire episode here for all the details, but here's the lowdown on how to get started: 1. Take some time to be quiet, every day!  (yes you read that right!  EVERYDAY!) I'm not saying you have to meditate, you do you boo.  What I am saying is that we live in a SUPER busy world and it is easy to start your day being inundated with notifications, alerts, and the demands of the world.  You will never be able to make changes happen if you can't find a few minutes to sit, breathe and listen. 2.  Listen for the gap between your thoughts. I once had a meditation guide say "listen to the space between your thoughts" when meditating.  Isn't that wise? The blank empty space that is as short as a breath. When you can focus on that, it will get longer and longer and your mind will slow down and become quiet, and you my friend, will be a meditating guru. Because that's all it takes, to be aware of the silence and just listen.  Not so hard right? Ok, it is totally hard, but that's why it's called a meditation practice. Practice makes perfect. 3.  Set your intention and here's the key -->>>RELEASE IT. You can intend all day long, but if you try to control the outcome, you aren't giving the universe space to deliver to you what is in your best interest.  Oh I know, if you are anything like me, you've already figured out what would be in your best interest.  But, experience has shown me that the more you try to control a situation instead of letting it go, the more difficult things become.  Learn from my pigheadedness, just let it go and let it unfold, it is SO MUCH EASIER. 4. Verbalize and or write out your intention. Setting your intention is one thing. But when you put a stake in the ground by writing or saying your intention out loud, the universe will hear you loud and clear.  I actually recommend doing both. It leaves no room for miscommunication or interpretation.  You've said it and written it and it's what you want. It's also psychologically important because you can hear what you want and that's some powerful vibration.  Does that mean you can't change your mind? Of course not. But if you do, just be sure to say it again. 5.  Now it's time to take action. This is the #1 thing that is forgotten or overlooked when it comes to making changes in your life.  You can't just sit around on your couch eating bomb bombs and expect the universe to deliver millions of dollars to you.  You have to take action.  More importantly, you have to take action in faith.  Plan out what you can control to get the ball rolling and here's the kicker, then let it go.  Because things may not roll the way you have planned them.  Be patient, do what you can do and see how things unfold.  I PROMISE, the universe really does have your back.  Another tip in this area is don't fret about the details.  Believe in serendipity and just keep an eye out for the universe at work. It's pretty amazing stuff when you start paying attention. I promise you the universe is conspiring for you to succeed and is always working in your favor.  I've seen it in my life again and again and I share a lot of stories and details in Episode 57.  Give it a listen here. What you believe plays a huge part in whether or not you’ll find success with your side hustle online. I’ve helped over 5,000 people build their websites for their online businesses, and through helping them, I’ve there are four common beliefs that people have about themselves that hold them back from finding success. Belief #1 – You’re not techie enough to build an online business. So, there’s no such thing as being “techie”. Yes, if you’re going to build a business online, there’s tech involved. There’s no way around it! But it’s not like you’re NOT techie, and everyone else out there understands something that you don’t. The only difference between someone who is “techie” and someone who isn’t is PERSISTENCE. Do you give up when you hit one roadblock, or do you keep looking for the answer? Do you quit when the first thing doesn’t work, or do you try to figure out why it didn’t work, adjust, and try something else? If you’re not going to give up, then I promise you, you CAN understand how all of this works enough to be able to put it together. All of the answers are out there for you. And the right teacher can also be the shortcut that helps you pull together all the tech the right way to create a profitable system for running your business online. Belief #2 – That someone else is already doing it, so there’s no room for you. Thoughts like: Who am I to do this? I’m not an expert. I don’t know enough yet. I can’t charge people money for this. I don’t have a portfolio, or references. I need more experience. These thought patterns can be totally devastating and can kill your dream before it ever has the chance to get started! So here’s the deal: You don’t know everything there is to know about your topic, and you never will.. There are always people out there doing what you do who are farther along than you. This is a good thing!! It tells you that there is a market for your services. People learn from more than one person. I know I do, do you? Look to them as mentors rather than competitors. There are also people out there that know less than you. They are the ones that need your help! You’re just a few steps ahead of them on your journey. You can relate to them. You’re not so far down the path of success (yet) that your results don’t seem attainable. It’s a great place to be! And you are the ONLY one who has your unique perspective, your specific set of experiences and knowledge who can approach what you do the way you do it. No one else has your story. If you share your knowledge from the perspective of what you have learned, what you have tried and what has (and hasn’t) worked for you instead of proclaiming to the world that you’re an expert, it’s SO MUCH EASIER. And yes, you can charge for it. Because your knowledge and experience and skills have value to others, no matter how easy or obvious it seems to be for you, it’s not so easy and obvious for others. Belief #3 – You have to have millions of followers or tens of thousands of email subscribers or visitors to your website to make money online. Yes, it’s true that the more subscribers you have on your email list, the more money you can make. And to be totally honest, it’s my goal this year to double my email list, because I know from looking at the past three years of my business exactly how much I earn from each subscriber. What most people think is that you have to hustle, hustle hustle to build a big email list before you can sell anything, and then you can launch a program or product to your list. There are ways to monetize as people are subscribing your list, even if you don’t have anything to sell yet.
