The simultaneous sell-off of stocks, bonds, and US dollar is a big deal. Brent Donnelly from Spectra Markets explains how broken trust has left permanent scars on US trade policy: “Once an action has been taken, you can remove the action, but then there's still going to be some damage.”
With decades of experience as an FX trader, portfolio manager and writer, Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets, is an ideal guest for a period when currency markets are quiet, range-bound and looking for inspiration. We walk through his career path, particularly how he has adapted to changing market regimes and worked to counteract behavioral biases over the years. And, with central bank policy still the dominant factor in the market mindset, driving activity over short and long term horizons, we conclude with Brent's current thoughts on interest rate market pricing, volatility and what it means for the near-term direction of currencies. The major equity indexes were mixed as of midday, a fair-to-middling session welcome relief from recent wild whipsaws. We also saw mixed inflation data: the personal consumption expenditure accelerated more than expected in August in the U.S., and eurozone prices surged a record 10% in September, though American consumers' inflation expectations eased this month. Much of the broad market conversation is about when rather than whether something big is about to break. Brent Donnelly, the president of Spectra Markets and the author of “Alpha Trader: The Mindset, Methodology and Mathematics of Professional Trading,” joins Maggie Lake to discuss that issue and to identify ways investors and traders can navigate the price action. We also hear from Michael Kao and Michael Nicoletos about the Federal Reserve's global power.
