This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 2025 edition of the New York African Film Festival with Black Tea director Abderrahmane Sissako and producer Kessen Tall. This conversation was moderated by Film Comment editor Devika Girish. After saying no on her wedding day, Aya leaves the Ivory Coast for a new life in the buzzing “Chocolate City” of Guangzhou, China. In this district where the African diaspora meets Chinese culture, she gets hired in a tea boutique owned by Cai, a Chinese man. In the secrecy of the back shop, Cai decides to initiate Aya to the tea ceremony. Through the teaching of this ancient art, their relationship slowly turns into tender love. But for their burgeoning passion to lead to mutual trust, they must let go of their burdens and face their past. Having made its New York Premiere at Film at Lincoln Center earlier this month, Black Tea is currently playing in select theaters, courtesy of Cohen Media Group.

In today's episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece dive deep into the debate: Are you pro-Perkins? That's right, we're talking about the classic Perkins Brailler versus the modern QWERTY keyboard, and how the tech landscape is shifting for Braille users. Steven's got his hands on the Shure MV7 microphone, and he's sounding smoother than a Barry White serenade. But the real question is, will Shaun finally get his cheeseburger? But wait, there's more! We've got listener emails that are sparking conversations you won't want to miss. From the nuances of Braille education to the emotional rollercoaster of living with vision loss, our community is chiming in with stories and insights that are as real as it gets. And as always, we're keeping it light with some fun banter about language differences (black tea, anyone?) and the occasional rant about the trials and tribulations of being partially sighted in a sighted world. So whether you're pro-Perkins, QWERTY-keen, or just here for the laughs, tune in to Double Tap and join the conversation. Don't forget, we love hearing from you, so keep those emails coming! In this episode, Kenneth once again sits down with Jeff Champeau who is the President of Rishi Tea and Botanicals to continue their tea basics discussion. This time they are talking about Pu-er, Oolong, and Black tea. They also go into details on English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Chai. Jeff explains tea processing, brewing, taste profiles, and caffeine content. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are two types of Pu-er.  Pu-er stimulates digestion. The ripe version is pro-biotic. Sun-drying reactivates the enzymes in Pu-er. Oolong tea comes in a wide range of oxidation levels, so is available in many colors.  Black tea actually looks reddish. English breakfast tea is usually a combination of two black teas. Earl Grey is a scented black tea that includes bergamot. Chai is spiced tea. Kung-fu tea is usually infused multiple times. BEST MOMENTS ‘Once that pile fermentation is done, the tea is simply dried. ´ ‘The range of aromatic compounds that we can get out of oolong tea is impressive.' ‘Chai means tea in Hindi.' Balhyocha is a tea unique to Korea - it's not produced anywhere else - and its rich and varied flavor profiles are also unique, not quite like any other teas we've tasted here at Talking Tea. But for many tea drinkers, even afficianados of balhyocha, it's also rather mysterious. What exactly is balhyocha? How is it processed? What gives it its unique, lovely complexity? To explore these questions we're chatting with Eric Glass, who, with Arthur Park, runs the annual TeaBuy Korea at Morning Crane Tea. Eric talks with us a bit about his own tea journey and how we came to discover Korean tea and in particular balhyocha, and then we delve into what balhyocha is and what it isn't. We discuss what defines balhyocha and what makes it difficult to categorize, we talk about the subcategory of balhyocha known as hwangcha or "yellow" tea (not to be confused with Chinese yellow tea), we discuss flavor profiles of balhyocha and we look at comparisons with oolongs and black tea or hongcha. We look at the origins of Korean tea cultivars and the impact of seed-grown versus clonal bushes, terroirs and processing techniques unique to balhyocha on the flavor profiles and body-feel of the teas. In addition to the TeaBuy Korea, Eric ran Morning Crane's tea tour to Korea in 2023, and we discuss some of the challenges Eric saw tea producers encountering and the uncertain future they're facing. Eric also shares his perspectives on why Korean teas in general and balhyocha in particular aren't widely known outside of Korea, and he makes some recommendations for what kind of cups to use to best enjoy balhyocha.   Morning Crane's website is at morningcranetea.org. In addition to his work with Morning Crane, Eric Glass has his own tea company, The Fragrant Cup. Though The Fragrant Cup's website is currently being redesigned, for info about Fragrant Cup's offerings you can contact Eric directly at Tea@fragrantcup.com. In this episode, Kenneth switches things up to sit down with Jeff Champeau, the President of Rishi Tea and Botanicals to talk tea. This is the first of several episodes on the subject.  Jeff explains the difference between true teas, spices, botanicals, and herbs and covers cultivars. He also provides insight into the history of tea and how it went from being a food to being enjoyed as a drink.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Initially, tea was added to soups and stews. Tea leaves can be fermented. In some countries, they are lacto-fermented. True tea comes in several colors and is harvested from the Camellia sinensis plant.  There are 3 subspecies of Camellia sinensis and 1000s of cultivars. Each cultivar has been created by breeding. So, each one tastes unique and has different nutrition profiles. Even how tea is picked impacts the taste. Plus, they triple toxin screen for heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic mold—contaminants commonly found in tea. I also use the crystals for iced tea, which saves a ton of time and hassle. This episode is something different. It's an experimental format that I'm super excited about, and it's back by popular demand. This is an episode that scratches an itch I've had for years. I am not always able to listen to every great podcast episode out there, even when they are by some of my closest friends. The answer to my predicament was to ask them to send me a top segment from their podcast that I could listen to and—more importantly—also share with you, my dear listeners. My team edited them together, and here we are! This episode is a compilation of 15-to-30–minute clips from some of the best podcasters—and also best interviewees—in the world and certainly some of my favorites. At the beginning of each clip, you will hear an intro from the host and where to find their work and podcast. I'll also share one or two of my favorite clips from episodes of The Tim Ferriss Show. You can view this episode as a buffet, and I strongly suggest that you check out the shows included. If you like my podcast, you will very likely enjoy the featured shows in this episode. And before you go: Do you like this format? Please let me know on Twitter at @tferriss and also mention @TeamTimFerriss.Please enjoy!*This episode is brought to you by Pique! I first learned about Pique through my friends Dr. Peter Attia and Kevin Rose, and now Pique's fermented pu'er tea crystals have become my daily go-to. I often kickstart my mornings with their Pu'er Green Tea and Pu'er Black Tea, and I alternate between the two. This rare type of naturally fermented tea is more concentrated in polyphenol antioxidants than any other tea—it supports focus and mental clarity, healthy digestion, metabolism, and a healthy immune system. Their crystals are cold extracted, using only wild-harvested leaves from 250-year-old tea trees. Plus, they triple toxin screen for heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic mold—contaminants commonly found in tea. I also use the crystals for iced tea, which saves a ton of time and hassle. Pique is offering up to 20% off of their pu'er teas, exclusively to my listeners. To sweeten the deal even more, you'll get a free sampler pack with 6 of their best-selling teas. Simply visit PiqueLife.com/Tim, and the discount will be automatically applied. They also offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, so your purchase is completely risk-free. Just go to PiqueLife.com/Tim to learn more.*This episode is also brought to you by Athletic Greens. I get asked all the time, “If you could use only one supplement, what would it be?” My answer is usually AG1 by Athletic Greens, my all-in-one nutritional insurance. I recommended it in The 4-Hour Body in 2010 and did not get paid to do so. I do my best with nutrient-dense meals, of course, but AG further covers my bases with vitamins, minerals, and whole-food-sourced micronutrients that support gut health and the immune system. Right now, Athletic Greens is offering you their Vitamin D Liquid Formula free with your first subscription purchase—a vital nutrient for a strong immune system and strong bones.
