Special Guest: Dr. Michele Borba More than one out of every five students report being bullied, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics (2016). One third of students who reported being bullied at school indicate that they were bullied at least once or twice a month during the school year. The reason for this bullying? Physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, and sexual orientation, just to name the top few. There is no doubt that we have a problem and our schools, parents and children need solutions. So what do we do? And is there a way to stop bullying before it starts? We've talked with a few experts on social aggression in the history of How to Talk to Kids about Anything- Rosalind Wiseman, Carrie Goldman and most recently, Katie Hurley who looked at social aggression specifically in girls. Today, we are going to focus on preventative solutions to this pervasive issue- namely, what my guest and good friend, Michele Borba, is calling the 6Rs of bully prevention. This Guided Meditation is designed for Students of TWIM (Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation & the 6Rs). It was created by Delson Armstrong and is led here by David Johnson of www.dhammasukha.org. This is led by David Johnson from Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center. We start by doing some lovingkindness meditation to get grounded. As the mind calms we enter the first Jhana. We observe all the factors spoken of by the sutta. And then we proceed to 2nd, 3rd and finally 4th Jhana where the meditation ends. In this guided meditation a group of students was led through each Jhana and was asked to see what factors and states arise in each one. The Anupada Sutta -MN 111- maps out the progress through all 8 jhānas to Nibbana. This meditation is based on the practice and progress of TWIM (Tranquil wisdom Insight Meditation) taught by Bhante Vimalaramsi. The way Bhante teaches the Lovingkindness or Metta is using the earliest suttas which allow progress to be quite fast. See 6Rs and Metta instructions on the website www.dhammasukha.org. This discussion leads to a new look at the Brahmavihāras or the practice of Metta (Lovingkindness) as the fastest and best path to Nibbana. Beginning Instructions for the Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation using Metta or Lovingkindness: Instructions as follows: Sit in a chair or on the floor, whichever is comfortable. Sit for 30 minutes minimum-don't move at all. Bring up a happy memory of lovingkindness- Holding baby, pets etc. Radiate that feeling to yourself for 10 Minutes. Pick a spiritual friend and put them in your heart and radiate that feeling to them for balance of sitting. When the mind wanders use the 6Rs. RECOGNIZE the mind has gone away. RELEASE thinking about the distraction. RELAX and tension or tightness left. RE-SMILE put that smile back on your lips and in your mind. RETURN to your self or your Friend and REPEAT: Continue on and use 6Rs if distracted. Have questions or problems with how to do this? Mark Mirchandani and Brian Dorsey are together again this week for an episode all about cloud migration using Txture and Accenture. Our guests Matthias Farwick of Txture, Patrick Niesel of Accenture, and Jason Purvor of Google help us understand their roles in cloud migration with some formal introductions to start the show. Txture helps companies assess their migration capabilities, providing insights to what will be necessary in the process and how viable cloud migration is as an option. Accenture works with Txture to augment the planning of migration strategies for clients. Jason helps us understand how Google uses the information gleaned from these assessments to help customers understand what the journey to Google Cloud will look like for their business. Txture provides good data which helps Google and clients make better decisions, not just in migration, but for the future health of the project while operating in the cloud. Our guests share the challenges of cloud migration and detail how these three powerhouse companies work together to overcome hurdles. From information gathering and budgeting to security and implementation, Txture, Accenture, and Google help companies understand their specific obstacles and develop a plan. Matthias uses a large banking client as an example to walk our listeners through a typical cloud migration process that takes advantage of Txture, Accenture, and Google. Jason details the process customers go through with Google as they establish their cloud environments and make decisions about the future of their projects. Through the analysis of four layers, Google helps customers think through this highly technical and involved migration process. Matthias describes the three assessment steps Txture applies to the process as well, and how these multiple-company analyses work together to create a solid cloud project now and continue to improve the project in the future. Matthias, Patrick, and Jason offer advice for companies considering a shift to the cloud, stressing the importance of preparing good data and keeping time predictions realistic. Company-wide cooperation is an important tool in the success of a cloud migration as well. Matthias Farwick Matthias Farwick co-founded Txture, a software for large scale cloud application assessments and modernization programs that is currently expanding to the US. Matthias is an avid mountaineer and skier. Patrick Niesel Patrick Niesel has been working within Accenture focusing on cloud transformations and in particular on application assessments. Jason Purvor Jason Purvor is a data centre exit strategist engaged in large scale migrations and “all in” transformations. He formerly ran CloudPhysics EMEA supporting Googlers with high resolution data center assessments. A cloud migration strategy is a plan which any organization develops to move its systems and applications from on-premises architecture to the cloud. Not all applications and systems benefit from running on the cloud; that's why you must indorse the most efficient way to work on it and migrate applications. Therefore, a systematic, documented strategy is essential. Any strategy needs to start from some barefoot, and then it builds on it. Similarly, the vital first step to creating a migration strategy is getting to know what you have? What are the collections of applications, systems, etc.? Once you have documented existing applications, you need to refer to the most common migration strategies. Gartner is calling 5R; some vendors mentioned as 6Rs or 7Rs. (These strategies are: refactor, replatform, repurchase, rehost, relocate, retain, and retire) Your organization will fall in these options, and you need to choose based on the workload discovery/assessment. Rehost refactor revise rebuild replace The decision must consider an organization's requirements, evaluation criteria, and architecture principles. In this booklet are the instructions for Loving-kindness Meditation (Metta) and the Practice of the Brahma Viharas which is based on the earliest Buddhist suttas, and if practiced correctly, will lead you to the supreme goal of Nibbana — in this very life. This booklet gives easy to follow instructions for a daily practice. Just 30 minutes a day gets you on a path to a deep experience of the truth. A month or two can even yield your first jhana experience because of the special "relax" step that is added for eliminating hindrances. For over 40 years Bhante Vimalaramsi researched and practiced many methods without finding any real satisfaction. He went back to the earliest Buddhist teachings. He found what he was seeking. Bhante's method of “The 6Rs", based on Right Effort, is the key to the cessation of craving and the elimination of ignorance. Bhante Vimalaramsi has been a monk since 1986 and practiced with many of the major Buddhist teachers in Asia. He now teaches all over the world and is the abbot of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center near St. Louis, Mo, USA. On Amazon Here

The 6Rs are a tool for meditation. In meditation, there is nothing actively to be done but deepen awareness. But in life in the world, sometimes we must engage actively. The 7Rs add an extra step that allows the 6Rs to be bought into an active life. On the last day of the retreat we discuss the 7Rs and 6 precepts in everyday life.Support the show (http://www.easingawake.org/donations.html)
Here, Bhante gives his different perspective on what the Buddha taught when he gave the foundations of mindfulness. This sutta is looked at in a different way and leads to what he calls his development of the method of Tranquil Wisdom Insight Meditation and the 6Rs. It leads to the highest attainment of the spiritual life, Nibbana. He explains that Breath Meditation is taught in the suttas in a slightly different way then is practiced by most meditators. Adding the Tranquilize step makes all the difference in the result.
