On May 20, 2016, ICU nurse Amber Kornhorst set out on a solo late-afternoon hike near Cane Beds, Arizona, and climbed a deceptively "sticky" sandstone wall she couldn't safely descend. With no cell service and no way out, she fell about 100 feet into a narrow rock "dungeon," suffering three spinal fractures, a crushed pelvis, head and facial injuries, severe dehydration, and hypothermia — and typed goodbye messages to her family on her phone. Refusing to give up, she crawled and climbed to a more visible ledge and blew her whistle three blasts every half hour until search-and-rescue teams and a helicopter located her nearly 24 hours later, executing a technical rope raise and hover-load evacuation to a Utah hospital. Her story drives home survival essentials: always tell someone your plan, never hike alone, start early, carry extra water and a whistle, consider a satellite communicator, and never climb anything you can't safely descend. 00:46 Show Intro And Setup 01:40 Amber Hits The Trail 03:02 Climbing The Sandstone Wave 04:10 No Way Down Desert Trap 05:32 The Hundred Foot Fall 06:20 Shock And Goodbye Texts 08:27 Painful Climb And Whistle 11:03 Search Effort Mobilizes 12:41 Helicopter Spots Her 14:16 Technical Rope Rescue 16:10 Hover Pickup Extraction 17:02 Helicopter Evacuation 17:43 Hospital Recovery Journey 19:06 Why She Survived 19:43 Whistle and Visibility 21:55 Search Mobilized Fast 22:50 Wilderness Safety Takeaways 25:03 Desert Hiking Mistakes 27:08 Survival Mindset Lessons 29:47 Final Wrap and Credits Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ Primary/First-Person Account Kohnhorst, Amber. In this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast, Dan is joined by Sharla Peterson to discuss her journey as a bodybuilder athlete. Sharla Peterson is an IFBB Pro wheelchair bodybuilder whose journey embodies resilience, reinvention, and elite performance. A lifelong athlete from Omaha, Nebraska, Sharla began in competitive aerobics before earning her degree in Occupational Therapy from USC, raising five children, and later entering the bodybuilding world in 2022. After an impressive rookie year—five shows and a 2nd-place finish at NPC Nationals—her momentum shifted when a Smith machine accident caused an L1 burst fracture, leaving her with an incomplete spinal cord injury. Instead of stepping away, she rebuilt her life and training from the ground up, adapting every aspect of her routine while refusing to let adversity define her.Sharla returned to the stage stronger than ever, ultimately earning her IFBB Pro Card and becoming one of the few women competing at the highest level of wheelchair bodybuilding. Whether she's preparing for guest posing at the Olympia, educating others on safe lifting mechanics, or inspiring the next generation—including her own children—Sharla continues to redefine what is possible through discipline, mindset, and unwavering drive. Do you remember Humpty Dumpty? Well, you might be in the middle of a Humpty Dumpty relationship right now. You remember he fell down, went to pieces and all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again. Maybe that's how you feel right now; there are pieces all around you, and there's no one to put them together. The wreckage? Well, it could be a broken relationship or maybe a breaking relationship with a parent, or a child, a husband, a wife, or a friend. If you're one of the King's men or women, there's actually something you can do to put the pieces back together again if you will. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Putting Broken Back Together." Now, our word for today from the Word of God really has something to do with broken or breaking relationships. It says in Romans 12:17-18, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Now, this says that there is a segment of any relationship that really is up to you. And as much as it depends on you; you cannot control the other person's response of course. But your part should always contribute to peace. Now, it's very easy to hide your responsibility for the brokenness of that relationship, or the strain, or the distance. You can say, "Oh, listen, what good would it do? They're never going to change." Or, "He/she doesn't understand; they don't want to understand." Or how about this, "If I did talk to them, they'd never listen." Or, "Listen, you know, I've tried so hard. What's the use?" Listen, that relationship is worth fighting for. You're going to carry with you wherever you go the remains of that broken relationship, like all the broken pieces of Humpty Dumpty, carried around inside of you. I wonder, would you take one more initiative? Would you try to build a paper bridge to that person? To be able to say, "As much as I could do, I have done." You know what I'm going to ask you to do? Write a letter. Now, if you haven't written a letter to them yet, well then maybe you haven't done all you could. You see, when you write, here's what happens. It will be much clearer than if you don't write and you try to just say it, because when you just say it you get distracted. And they'll answer and you'll answer back. And also, if you'll write it they'll consider it a lot more seriously; they'll read it over and over again and they're not going to have to be thinking of what they're going to say next. So, you sort of have their full attention. And I'd like to suggest to you five paragraphs in that letter with that person that, well, there's a strained relationship. I'll give you the opening sentence of each paragraph, and then it's up to you. Paragraph number one, "I love you..." Start with that; explain your love for them. The second paragraph, "Thank you for..." Just begin to reflect on some of the things you do appreciate about them. I know there's a lot of things that frustrate you, bother you, but you never would have had a relationship with them if there weren't some things you appreciate about them too. Would you start to list those? "Thank you for..." The third paragraph begins with these very difficult words, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for my part of the brokenness; for anything I've contributed to a broken or strained relationship." The fourth paragraph says, "I wish we could... Here's how I'd like our relationship to be..." "Whatever's happened in the past, here's how I'd like it to be from now on." The last paragraph, "I promise..." "Here's my commitments to you." Okay, did you get that? "I love you," Thank you," "I'm sorry," "I wish we could," "I promise," and then you get on your knees and you lay that letter before the Lord and you pray over it. And then you talk about it with the person after it arrives. Let them read it. Ask them if they would talk with you after it arrives. Look, what have you got to lose? And maybe it will be a new beginning. For some people I know it has been. And you will have fulfilled what the Scripture says, "As far as it depends on you, live at peace." Give God a chance to take that relationship and mend it again, using that letter as a beginning, because that relationship is going to be a part of you wherever you go.

We stumbled onto Michaela's story because of this hilarious video explaining her pretty traumatic experience. We love a good comeback story after injury, especially when it includes a life being saved by strength training. We won't ruin the whole story, you'll just have to listen to the episode to find out, but there are several valuable lessons in here for both service members facing their own challenges, and for the medical professionals who care for them. The parallels between Michaela's experience and our previous episode with F/A-18E pilot Kegan Gill are astonishing. They both faced the unique combination of physical injury, brain injury, and mental health issues, and they both describe the mental health recovery as being far more challenging than the physical recovery. The "Broken Back Seax" is a type of knife or dagger that was characteristic of the Anglo-Saxons, the Germanic inhabitants of England from the 5th century AD until the Norman Conquest in 1066. The name "seax" itself refers to a type of single-edged knife that was commonly used among the Germanic peoples during this time period. The term "broken back" refers to the shape of the blade. A Broken Back Seax typically has a straight cutting edge for the majority of the blade's length, but towards the tip, the spine of the blade abruptly angles downward, creating a distinctive break in the profile of the blade. This design feature is thought to have provided additional strength to the tip of the blade, making it more effective for thrusting and stabbing motions. Broken Back Seaxes were versatile tools and weapons, used for various tasks including cutting, slicing, and stabbing. They were often carried by Anglo-Saxon warriors as a sidearm in addition to their primary weapons such as swords or spears. These knives were also frequently used for everyday tasks such as hunting, woodworking, and food preparation. The Broken Back Seax is an iconic symbol of the Anglo-Saxon period and has been found in archaeological excavations throughout England and other parts of Europe where the Anglo-Saxons had influence.

It was an honor to speak with Dr. Terry Chase—author, public speaker, nurse, and educator—to learn how she kept going after a devastating injury. An unforeseeable accident left Terry with an incomplete spinal cord injury. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, this former middle school PE teacher let her wheelchair propel her forward. Now, she wants to help others begin their own transformations through experiential learning. Here's why Terry didn't let a spinal cord injury steal her determination to do great things. Wayne Roberts. Miracle. It was mind blowing to meet Wayne. I was told he had a tragic ski accident just a couple of months prior to a meeting with him and he was walking, talking, and mixing with a group of people without much physical impairment or any mental impact. Wayne looked normal as can be and yet, Wayne had wrecked while skiing at Solitude Ski area on an icy double black diamond run and even being a ski instructor, he went down hard! Wayne hit so hard on his face that it broke his neck and then slammed into a grove of trees head first where the damage continued. Wayne guarded his head with his arm and when he smashed into the trees, it broke his arm completely and his back! 21 bones broke in total. 4-5 broken ribs and bruised lungs on top of that. Wayne's son Dillon was by his side the whole time and remained stoic and brave at the age of 14. This story resonates pain, healing, and bravery + love. So happy Wayne is here today to tell us his story and is healing well. Tune in to hear his story. Thanks Wayne for your story!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
