What does it mean to call something “Christian music”? Nick Barré has spent decades in the music industry—from working at EMI with early Switchfoot to managing major names like Casting Crowns, KB, Brandon Heath, and more. In this 200th episode of The Biblical Mind, he joins Dru Johnson to reflect on the Christian music label, the tension between calling and category, and how artists navigate faith and fame. Nick argues that labeling music—or restaurants or plumbers—as “Christian” may do more harm than good. He shares why genre categories are a business necessity but spiritually unhelpful, and why the most important questions artists must answer are about calling, audience, and identity—not chart placement. From spiritual burnout to public affirmation, from the temptations of platform to the dangers of envy, Nick shares pastoral, industry-hardened wisdom on how to guide artists into longevity and spiritual wholeness. He even offers advice for aspiring Christian musicians—and what it really means to “show, not tell” when pursuing a creative calling. On her journey of decluttering Shawna is getting rid of things she once thought would make her happy. And she’s realizing that she’s been believing the lie that God won’t take care of her, that she must take care of herself, and ultimately that age old lie that God is holding out on her. Perry admits, “If you knew everything about me you might not want to listen to me.” The first time Perry heard someone else say that was from singer-songwriter Brandon Heath. It made such an impression on Perry that he’s started admitting it. He’ll tell you why. Shawna confesses her struggle with greed to financial advisor, Rob West, which opens a conversation about everything ultimately belonging to God. We have stewardship responsibilities, not household rights. If everything belongs to Him, shouldn’t we make financial decisions based on what pleases God rather than what we want? When we love someone we can’t help but celebrate them! Like Shawna’s son Dray for his sister at her concert, and Perry’s dad at his basketball games in high school. And then there’s what comes out of us for Jesus! If you follow God, will where will He lead you? Will He keep you safe? Shawna shares the answer directly from Psalm 23. And Perry shares why his favorite part of Psalm 23 is: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wgnbSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this heartfelt episode of the podcast, host Wisdom Moon sits down with artist and songwriter Natalie Layne for an authentic conversation about faith, artistry, and finding peace in the creative process. Natalie shares profound insights about trusting God's timing in the music industry, moving away from the common cycle of desperation and extreme highs and lows that many artists experience. Throughout the conversation, Natalie's infectious enthusiasm and deep faith illuminate how finding true joy in artistry comes not from striving, but from resting in God's perfect timing. Currently residing in Nashville, Natalie's latest independent single "Amen" has gained millions of views on Instagram (where she has 328k followers) and TikTok (where she has over 233k followers) and 3 million likes on her videos. The single follows her 2021 Castles EP that garnered attention worldwide. The music led to opening concerts for Jeremy Camp, Chris Tomlin and We the Kingdom, and sharing stages with Steven Curtis Chapman, Mandisa and Crowder. Playing in several Nashville-based R&B and jazz bands, Natalie graduated with a Master's Degree in Commercial Piano from Belmont University. Writing and producing her own music, she most recently finished 2 major U.S. tours with Danny Gokey, Austin French, Brandon Heath, and Josh Wilson. She began leading worship at the age of 12, alongside worship pastors such as Cory Asbury, Jon Egan and Jared Anderson. In December 2022, Natalie signed an exclusive recording and publishing contract with Centricity Music. Her label debut the, "Amen" EP, has amassed nationwide radio adds, reached #5 on Independent Christian Radio Charts, and broke the top 30 on Billboard charts. From the EP, an exclusive live performance of her song "Grateful For" was just featured by the Recording Academy/GRAMMY's for their segment Positive Vibes Only. Natalie was also amongst Pandora's "Top 10 Artists to Watch" and featured on a billboard in Times Square. I'm excited to have my sweet friend on the podcast this week, Megan Tibbits. She's an amazing singer, worshipper, harp player and artist. Megan appeared before a national TV audience on ABC's Rising Star, advancing to the top 12, and released her debut album ‘Until I Fly' soon after. Since then, Megan has worked with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Jonathan McReynolds, Danny Gokey, Brandon Heath & Marvin Winans Jr., and her videos have gotten the attention of artists such as Alicia Keys, Tauren Wells, etc. Most recently, Megan appeared as “The Harpist” on FOX's I Can See Your Voice and is soon to go on tour with author Bob Goff. She's much more than an artist but I loved getting to chat about the industry and worship and how to navigate some gray areas when it comes to leading God's people in something so holy. We explore the pressure to perform and the need to maintain a worshipful heart in all aspects of life because all of us have some kind of influence we've been called to steward. This is such a powerful conversation, and she brings such spiritual wisdom and that all can learn a great deal from! Aaron and his buddy were at a restaurant and asked the waitress, “Is there something we can pray for you about?” And she started to cry. Everybody is going through something. Be kind to everyone you meet. Then, if you want to be a mature follower of Jesus, don’t run from suffering. When Perry thinks of a person who’s walked this out, he thinks of his son, Taylor. Next, when you feel overwhelmed do you ever think you’re too much for God? That maybe your need is greater than his ability to provide? Moses felt that way too. God responded to Moses’ feeling of being overwhelmed, with a question. To forgive the person who’s wounded you so deeply is so hard. Brandon Heath’s song, “I’m Not Who I Was,” is all about his journey to forgive his stepmom. It’s a conversation about the freedom and the painful cost of forgiving. Then, Shawna shares a childhood memory of fear that she was going to get beat up. But somebody had her back. Knowing who’s behind us gives us holy swagger in life. If you’re in a season of suffering you may be tempted to think, “God must be punishing me.” But what’s really going on is completely the opposite of that! Last, do you ever have family drama? How do you handle that in a way that honors God? Moses had some family drama and man, the way he handled it challenges us to be more like Moses and more like Jesus too.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Over FaceTime, they shared a quick conversation to say that they had already pulled out the "constructions" to see how it worked. She may have mixed up her words like her Auntie Car Car but we all know what she meant....

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
When Brandon Heath sings of days getting dark and life getting hard in his song "See Me Through It," I immediately thought of Habakkuk and the national crisis during his time. The darkness and injustice of his time can be seen in our own, and just like Habakkuk, we can trust that God will see us through it. I have a plan to help you interact with the text of this minor prophet all week. You don't want to miss it. In this week's episode, I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Remembering the people reflected in the Bible were real Listen to an audio version of the text Reading in context Repetition Study in various translations Make a list Write down observations Ask questions Write out a prayer inspired by Scripture Using this week's song as Habakkuk's theme song Thoughts about prophets I learned from reading in Abraham Joshua Heschel's book "The Prophets" - Amazon Paid Link "The prophet is a person, not a microphone." "The prophet's task is to convey a divine view, yet as a person, he is a point of view. He speaks from the perspective of God as perceived from the perspective of his own situation." "To us, injustice is injurious to the welfare of the people; to the prophets, it is a deathblow to existence; to us, an episode, to them a catastrophe, a threat to the world." Habakkuk's "how long" and "why" questions we may be asking as well - Habakkuk 1:2-4 Learning to be more sensitive to the things God is sensitive about A plan to utilize small chunks of time during the week to make a significant impact (as inspired by James Clear's "Atomic Habits" - Amazon Paid Link) Day one: Listen to an audio version of Habakkuk 1-3 (it will take less than 10 minutes) - I use the YouVersion Bible App Day two: Repeat day one Day three: Listen to an audio version of Habakkuk in a different translations Day four: Watch the Bible Project's Habakkuk Overview Video - BibleProject.com Day five: Take 10 minutes to write down questions, prayers, lists, or general observations from the text (at this point, you've invested almost an hour, just split over several days) Day six: Schedule extra time to follow some cross-references and see how Habakkuk connects to the rest of the Bible and Christ Romans 1:7 Galatians 3:11 Hebrews 10:37 Revelation 19:11-21 Philippians 4:10-13 We are a people called to live by faith and God is a God who will see us through it until His appointed time. More Than a Song Playlist Additional Resources Lyrics - NewReleaseToday.com "The Prophets" by Abraham Joshua Heschel - Amazon Paid Link "Atomic Habits" by James Clear - Amazon Paid Link ESV Expository Commentary: Daniel–Malachi - Amazon Paid Link Weekly Challenge Follow the plan laid out in this episode to interact with the book of Habakkuk this week. You will be amazed at how small chunks of time invested in interacting with Scripture will add up -- not only in an accumulation of time but in familiarity with the Scripture itself. As you read (or listen to) the interaction between Habakkuk and God, remember that Habakkuk was a real person, not a microphone.
