Today, I am blessed to have here with me Jay Nixon. He is a skilled speaker, author, coach, and mentor for anyone looking to get results and permanently alter their way of life. Over the years, Jay has helped thousands of people gain confidence and be their best selves. He hosts a podcast called "Thrive Forever Fit", which covers topics related to diet, exercise, and mentality that can influence how we feel and behave. Jay's father was killed in an accident when he was five. As a coping mechanism for the tragedy, food became his way to comfort himself and led him to overweight. But even in this condition, Jay has always been interested in fitness and nutrition. When he got older, Jay engaged to different sports that helped him on his weight journey. However, he still struggled with his mind as he is anxious about how his body looks. Nonetheless, he became a personal trainer at 17, and since then, Jay has begun to find the path to where he belongs. Ultimately, he decided to open his gym, started writing books, and began his career on coaching people. Thrive Fitness Studio is the name of his gym and everything associated with it is called Thrive Forever Fit because Jay believes we should do something consistently for as long as we live. He wanted to teach people how to live comfortably so that we wouldn't have to do radical things that have been proven to be failures. In this episode, Jay Nixon digs into the issues and wrong beliefs that hinder people from achieving a healthy body and lifestyle. Additionally, Jay emphasizes the value of having the correct mindset when losing weight and some takeaways you can implement immediately to begin your journey towards forever fitness. Tune in as we chat about the mindset around the food, myths about losing weight, advice to start right away, and the difference between intelligent work rather than hard work. [00:00] Struggling to Have a Healthy Body? The Problem is You, Not the Food There's a lot of drug abuse on the scene in bodybuilding. There's not a lot of alcohol consumption, but there's a lot of prescription and recreational drug use. Your mindset around the food is the real issue, not the food itself. Food is more like fuel and a resource to nourish and do what your body wants. Instead of creating a short-term sustainable diet, make a lifestyle that you are comfortable maintaining forever. [17:00] The Wrong Beliefs in Losing Weight That You Should Avoid You don't need to starve yourself. It's a myth that there's good versus bad food. What we are talking about is real food, not with those different chemicals. Counting macros and calories, it's not sustainable. Developed a lifestyle where you understand what food looks like and what it will do when you eat it. People just want to be told what to do instead of learning what to do. [25:50] What is The Value of Having the Right Mindset in Losing Weight? This has nothing to do with the food, and nothing to do with being overweight. The weight loss was a side effect. It's all about the brain and the mind. The book is about psychological reasons I learned working with clients and myself over time. It was always the story, the mindset, or the belief systems that the client had psychologically that were the issue. Jay uses fitness and nutrition to get people into my world, and then he unpacks the real reasons why they're there. It will be useless to stay with the same beliefs you had before Jay. [32:16] Increase Your Thermostat: Love Yourself and Maintain Your Fitness We have a lot of limiting beliefs, and we have a lot of self-doubts that hold us back. Sometimes, giving a compliment to someone who is not in the right frame of mind can affect them negatively. It all starts with the psychology of what you believe you deserve. Jay's favorite saying is that you'll never be, do or have more than you believe you deserve. [34:20] How Can You Begin Your Lifelong Journey Towards a Healthy Lifestyle? First, Jay helps you to recognize the negative language you are using and change it. Then he will talk about the belief system of who you believe you are. Jay won't let you lie to yourself, but he won't be cruel. He will inform you in a kind manner. If you're using the word “try”, start telling yourself, " I will do what's required. If you'll change your language, it will change your life. If you continually break promises to yourself, that will create a lack of self-belief or a lack of confidence or just that lack of mentality. [42:05] Hard work vs Intelligent Work: What is the Difference? He realizes that most people say they are hardworking, which made him think about its variability and subjectivity. Most of the things he does would not prescribe as hard, but they require him to do them intelligently. There is much more value in being intelligent in food, how our body moves, and how we speak and act rather than working hard. AND MUCH MORE! Success requires great systems — but also the flexibility to adapt when needed. That's true in both life and business. And no one is more qualified to speak on success in both sectors — and how to balance both routine and adaptability — than our latest guest. Jay Nixon is an accomplished speaker, author, coach, and mentor whose mission is to disrupt the health and fitness industry. He is the owner of Thrive Fitness Studio in Palm Desert, California, and the creator of the Thrive Forever Fit F.L.E.X. Transformation Program and The Hero Academy. Listen to the full conversation for more on Jay's story (from acupuncture studio broom closet to NFL consultant to multimillion-dollar business owner), why most people get in their own way when it comes to health, the most important mindset shifts people need in order to succeed, and a lot more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: Jay's background, and how that led him to the fitness industry and the entrepreneurial life — including his time consulting with the NFL How Jay drummed up the courage to take the entrepreneurial leap despite having the comfort and status of a great corporate career How Jay built up his career over the years — despite starting his personal training business in the broom closet of an acupuncture studio Why Jay believes success is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics The role that Jay's chaotic childhood — including the death of his father when he was a young child — has affected his psychology as an adult What “aggressive empathy” is and why Jay says he has it The top reason people get stuck when it comes to weight loss or starting a healthier lifestyle Why Jay can tell whether someone has a self-esteem issue, just based on the first 3 minutes of meeting them Why one of the most important things someone can do to create change in their lives includes writing a “new story” for themselves How Jay measures success in his business and life, plus the regular routines he's incorporated into his life (including getting up at 3 a.m.) Why Jay says he treats his life “like a business” Why Jay doesn't believe in balance and how he incorporates both regimentation and flexibility into his life Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Thrive Forever Fit website Thrive Forever Fit Supplements Jay Nixon on Instagram Jay Nixon on Facebook “The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight” by Jay Nixon “The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life's Not Supposed to Suck” by Jay Nixon Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. For over two decades, he has helped thousands of people achieve total body transformation — through fitness, nutrition and personal development coaching. On this episode hosted by Ned Arick, Jay dives into mindset and momentum. He explains what momentum stacking is and how the most successful people, athletes and teams use it to build on little wins to achieve great things. He also relates momentum (and negative momentum) to mindset, and shares more about why mindset is so powerful. Even if you have the perfect program, location, facility, nutrition, etc., if your mindset is not where it needs to be, you will always fall short. As a coach, it is up to you to bring that mindset as you approach each situation. Jay and Ned discuss why mindset is such a key factor in success, not just in sports but also in life, and why visualizing your goals can help them come true. Jay Nixon is a speaker, author, mentor, and coach whose mission is to help each and every person achieve their “absolute best self.” He is the owner of the Thrive Fitness Studio in Palm Desert, California, and the grateful leader of the Thrive Tribe, a collection of Jay's current and former clients who work together to improve their health, their fitness, and their lives. For over two decades, Jay has helped thousands of people achieve total body transformation through a cohesive combination of fitness, nutrition, and personal development coaching – and he packaged the most important lessons that he learned into a great book: The Overweight Mind - The Undeniable Truth Behind Why Your Not Losing Weight. Jay believes that your mind is the root cause of many systemic weight gain problems that plague people today; “It's the three-pound monster between our ears that's a bigger problem than the 100 pounds of body fat that we carry.” It's not the wrong food and it's not the wrong exercise – until you get your mindset under control, you're going to struggle with being overweight. In The Overweight Mind, Jay says that the bridge between your current self and your desired self can be built with three main elements: Decision - This is a firm decision, including a hard goal to work towards. Consistency - After you make a decision, you need to be consistent with the decision, even in the face of adversity. Resolve - Understand that there will be adversity, because “the road to success is always under construction.” Life will show up, but if you have resolve you'll be able to overcome anything. At the end of every chapter in the book, Jay leaves the reader with a Power Action Step they can implement. I love this aspect of the book, so we want to leave you all with three power action steps after listening to this podcast: Get clarity and specificity around what it is that you truly want. Take massive action, even imperfect action, every day. When adversity pops up, just keep moving. Remember: “It's not more than you can handle, it's just more than you expected.” You've made it through everything else in your life up to this point, and you can do this too. (I'm going to cheat and add a fourth Power Action Step: Read or listen to The Overweight Mind!) -- Resources: Learn more at https://nixonelite.com/ (NixonElite.com) Connect with Jay: Facebook | https://twitter.com/nixonelite?lang=en (Twitter) The Overweight Mind - The Undeniable Truth Behind Why Your Not Losing Weight Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living?
