Success requires great systems — but also the flexibility to adapt when needed. That's true in both life and business. And no one is more qualified to speak on success in both sectors — and how to balance both routine and adaptability — than our latest guest. Jay Nixon is an accomplished speaker, author, coach, and mentor whose mission is to disrupt the health and fitness industry. He is the owner of Thrive Fitness Studio in Palm Desert, California, and the creator of the Thrive Forever Fit F.L.E.X. Transformation Program and The Hero Academy. Listen to the full conversation for more on Jay's story (from acupuncture studio broom closet to NFL consultant to multimillion-dollar business owner), why most people get in their own way when it comes to health, the most important mindset shifts people need in order to succeed, and a lot more. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: Jay's background, and how that led him to the fitness industry and the entrepreneurial life — including his time consulting with the NFL How Jay drummed up the courage to take the entrepreneurial leap despite having the comfort and status of a great corporate career How Jay built up his career over the years — despite starting his personal training business in the broom closet of an acupuncture studio Why Jay believes success is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics The role that Jay's chaotic childhood — including the death of his father when he was a young child — has affected his psychology as an adult What “aggressive empathy” is and why Jay says he has it The top reason people get stuck when it comes to weight loss or starting a healthier lifestyle Why Jay can tell whether someone has a self-esteem issue, just based on the first 3 minutes of meeting them Why one of the most important things someone can do to create change in their lives includes writing a “new story” for themselves How Jay measures success in his business and life, plus the regular routines he's incorporated into his life (including getting up at 3 a.m.) Why Jay says he treats his life “like a business” Why Jay doesn't believe in balance and how he incorporates both regimentation and flexibility into his life Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Thrive Forever Fit website Thrive Forever Fit Supplements Jay Nixon on Instagram Jay Nixon on Facebook “The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight” by Jay Nixon “The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life's Not Supposed to Suck” by Jay Nixon Buy a copy of “Lost at CEO: An Entrepreneur's Guide to Strategy” by Carl J. Mark knows the true meaning of sacrifice, perseverance, and resilience. Mark served as a Navy SEAL Special Warfare Operator 1st Class with SEAL Team 5A. As a Navy SEAL, Mark did combat deployments to Iraq. On his last deployment, Mark sustained a gunshot wound to the head from a bullet that went over his rifle through his right eye and out the back of his head a few inches behind his right ear. The injury left him blind in his right eye. Even though Mark was gravely wounded, he refused to be carried to the medivac helicopter. He walked himself through a ‘hot zone' to be transported to a medical facility.Against all odds, Mark worked through his critical injury and recovered. During his first few years of recovery, mobility, endurance, awareness, and memory were significantly affected, but Mark was determined to enter a new career path in law enforcement. After leaving the Navy, Mark began working at the Lake County Sheriff's Office and shortly thereafter completed the Police Academy. Since beginning employment, he has been to several law enforcement/investigations-related qualification courses. Mark is continuing his career at the Lake County Sheriff's Office as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division. In his new book, Post-Traumatic Thriving, the socio-economist Dr Randall Bell tells extraordinary stories of succesful people who've been through painful and tragic experiences. In this podcast we explore his thesis - that through his blueprint, the energy of trauma and grief can be channelled to change your life - and the lessons that those yet to experience significant trauma can take from those who've turned tragety into success. ABOUT DR RANDALL BELLDr Randall Bell is a socio-economist responsible for determining the economic impact of some of the most tragic events of our time. He's worked on 9/11, the Sandy Hook school shooting, Hurricain Katrina and many more, meeting those most affected in the process. The Wall Street Journal labelled him 'Dr Disaster' because he's usually there when lives have been torn apart. But in his time he's both witnessed and helped people draw triumph from tragety. ***For suggestions and questions, WhatsApp the producers on +44 773 539 4284Follow us on Social @jaxandmartinpodJoin our online community: www.jaxandmartinshow.comWATCH the full interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCdSIrHS7Lz3whqqKyTVziUA/videos Hosted on Acast. She eventually left New York City for Denver to start over amid the mountain air. She left a public relations career and became a Guided Autobiography instructor, as well as the author of the bestselling memoir, Both Sides Now: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Bold Living. Her writing and her work inspire resilience. In the latest episode of the Make Meaning Podcast, Nancy speaks with host Lynne Golodner about her writing process, her passion for teaching Guided Autobiography, how life and death can collide, and her daily practices for building a life of meaning. She says, “In order to be resilient, you have to move beyond the things that hold you back. You have to be able to transcend challenges and sometimes that means re-writing your story or a part of your story.”

This is Episode 63 of the VulnerABLE Podcast! Growing up his parents separation made life challenging, then a few years ago he would suddenly lose people he loved dearly. Now he's using his experience to coach others to turn tragedy into triumph! At an early age he can remember moving between his mother and father’s houses, basically living out of a suitcase. Their separation was anything but amicable, and he can remember having to break up fights. In his teenage years he fell into hanging with the wrong crowds, leading to drinking and drugs. He would go between his mother and father, because neither could handle him, until he finally started to get his life together. Then in a matter of months he would lose his baby daughter, mother and grandmother. All of this led to him realizing that you only get one life, and you need to make the most of it. Now he’s using his story, and experiences to coach others on how to overcome their struggles, and go from tragedy to triumph. One of the things I fought with myself for years about what this notion that turning tragedy into the triumph of success has to be tangibly recognized. I, for one, can get sucked into the world of social expectations where perception and looks are everything. Guess what?? Spiritual awakening is the notion that other realms provide this same idea of success, and even more so. What about freedom and choice and liberation from negative thoughts and emotions? I’ll tell you what, I’ve never heard any of my patients say what they wished they had more material success when they are on the brink of death or critical illness. The vision of life becomes open and clear to the idea that success is the love and health we feel within ourselves and can share to others. This podcast will describe the 5 things that helped me understand the need for self-care in motivating tragedy into triumph.

Up until two weeks ago, 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis was an intersection that most people had never heard of. Now that street corner is being used as a place to share a message of hope. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was taken into police custody at that intersection and died after a police officer knelt on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. Last week, Christophe Ulysse who serves with YWAM in Kona, Hawaii as a leader in a ministry called Messengers, had the opportunity to travel to Minneapolis to that exact street corner to preach.

State Treasurer Shawn Wooden was born and raised in Hartford. He's seen firsthand how systemic racism limits access to housing, education and opportunity in Connecticut's cities. Police shootings of unarmed men and high rates of police stops of people of color in the suburbs aren't just news reports or statistics for him. "This is the America I know," he tells John Dankosky on "Steady Habits" this week. "And this America continues to scare me." He's advocating for corporate America to take on racism, and he's using his position as an investor of state money to do so. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ryan Manion has dedicated her life to supporting our nation's military, veterans, and families of fallen heroes. She is inspired by the character, leadership, and sacrifice of her brother 1st Lt Travis Manion, USMC, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq while drawing fire away from his wounded comrades on April 29th, 2007. Ryan is the co-author of the newly released book, The Knock at the Door, Three Gold Star Families Bonded by Grief and Purpose. Serving as the President of Travis Manion Foundation since 2012, Ryan leads a national movement focused on assisting veterans and families of the fallen to take the next step in their personal journeys and inspiring the next generation of leaders. As a highly regarded advocate for the military community, Ryan has been invited to address national audiences on numerous occasions—including Good Morning America, CBS this Morning, CNN, The Today Show, Fox News and many more. Carrying on the legacy of her brother Travis, Ryan continues to lead a life of service to others. This was most notably recognized in 2015 when she was selected to receive the President's Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service. Ryan served on the Advisory Committee at Arlington National Cemetery and remains committed to their mission. As a leader in the Veteran Non-Profit sector, Ryan serves on the Advisory Boards of the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation and With Honor. Some additional accolades include: ● 2018 Bush Institute Stand-To Veteran Leadership Fellow ● 2018 Sage Foundation Charity Pioneer ● 2017 United States Naval Academy Honorary Graduate ● 2016 HillVets 100 list ● 2014 Joseph D. Helton, Jr. Award for Leadership ● 2013 Hillier (Ignite) Warrior for Warriors Award Ryan resides in Doylestown, PA with her husband and three children, Maggie Rose, Honor and Travis Brendan. Ryan continues to serve her local community by serving as a Township Supervisor since elected in 2011. While responsibilities of this position are focused on deciding issues of public safety, growth management, environment, etc., Ryan most appreciates the personal connection with those within the community she is able to directly serve. The Interview Highlights Ryan worked alongside her mother, Janet, at the Travis Manion Foundation for approximately 18 months before her mother passed away. The board of directors for the foundation then appointed Ryan President of the organization. Talk about big shoes to fill! To help her fill her mom's shoes, Ryan hired really smart people to work alongside her. She is very humble and doesn't take credit for the organization but gives all credit to her mom for laying a foundation for success. The organization supports military veterans and their families. So many people want to give and serve and honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country. The Hero's Run, which was started as a grassroots effort with approximately 500 people participating, now occurs in 90 places across the world with more than 70,000 people showing up to run and support first responders and veterans. Robyn ran the 1st Hero's run with her daughter in the jogging stroller and remembers the passion and emotions associated with the event. One of the reasons Ryan wrote the book, “The Knock at the Door” was to show the real side of her. She is in the public eye a lot and appears to be so strong, not shedding tears for her brother, Travis or her the loss of her mom. People asked her how she does it and as a result of all of the questions she wanted to tell her story and her journey. Ryan and her co-authors, Amy and Heather wanted to show that their stories didn't end with the knock at the door. Their stories were just beginning. Ryan believes that setting goals to get through each day after a major life event occurs is key. Setting small goals and thinking about today and not next year is important. It helps to think about tomorrow but no further into the future. When you go through a traumatic event or loss you have to set small goals at first. Setting intentional goals is the key. One has to be comfortable with the fact that life is not a sprint. And it's important to remember that failure is a bruise, not a tattoo. It's the little failures that have the power to set us back, so mindset is important. Each day is a new day and an opportunity to be the best we can be. Tomorrow is a new day to turn the setbacks around. When we realize that life is a series of successes and failures and that a success is just around the corner, the failures and setbacks don't hurt as bad. The best way to honor those we've lost is to not give up but be the best version of ourselves. The Travis Manion Foundation is an empowerment organization. The organization helps provide opportunities for men and women who served in the military to help educate our youth on the importance of character and gives an opportunity for continued service, even without their uniforms. Fifty-five percent of veterans say they feel disconnected to community when they return to civilian life. Through the program, volunteers have talked to more than 350,000 students across the US. One third of kids do not have a positive role model or, example, of good character in their lives. The veteran volunteers can positively influence the children to become men and women of good character. Tragedy can strike at any moment, and sometimes it can change our lives forever. My guest today, Chris Waddell, talks about a tragic accident that he faced early in his life and how we went on to achieve great things afterward. He also talks about how you can turn your own tragedies into triumphs. Chris is the founder of One Revolution, a foundation that's on a mission to have those with disabilities be viewed for their potential, rather than their limitations. While he was in college, Chris suffered a skiing accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Following this event, he believed that the world could see him differently. Therefore, he took to the slopes once again to compete as a monoskier. Eventually, going on to compete at the Paralympic level, and becoming the fastest monoskier in the world! After retiring from athletics, Chris continued on with his mission to turn the perception of disability upside down. This led him to East Africa to attempt a summit bid of Mount Kilimanjaro. After days of hand-pedaling a four-wheeled rover, and with a little help from his team, he eventually made it to the top. Also, throughout his journey, he's earned several other honors as well; such as becoming the Dalai Lama's Unsung Hero of Compassion and being one of People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People”. In 1985, just after high school graduation, Alan T. Brown received a phone call that no one wants to get. One of his best friends, Danny, was paralyzed from the waist down after breaking his back in a terrible car accident. Danny was just 18-years-old. Little did Alan know he would find himself in a similar predicament a few years later while on vacation with friends in the Caribbean. In the blink of an eye, Alan went from being a healthy young man who loved playing sports to lying on his back unable to move. On today’s show, Alan talks about the accident that completely changed his life, and how he turned a personal tragedy into a triumph. Jay Nixon - My Mentor, Coach, Confidant, and Brother. In this episode, Jay and I dig deep into his new book. New Book Details: Learn How to Turn Tragedy and Pain into a Catalyst for Growth and Success! It's been said that pain is a fundamental part of life—a darkness that acts as a contrast to the light. Most, if not all of us experience pain at some point in our lives, particularly the emotional pain of loss. While it may be true that pain is unavoidable, it doesn't have to lead to meaningless suffering. Pain can serve a far greater purpose in your life than something to be feared. Jay Nixon, the bestselling author of The Overweight Mind: The Undeniable Truth Behind Why You're Not Losing Weight is back with a groundbreaking new book, The Purpose of Pain: How to Turn Tragedy into Triumph, Because Life’s Not Supposed to Suck! The Purpose of Pain is a transformational guide that shows you how to turn pain into a catalyst for change—how you can turn your story of tragedy into a life of triumph. In the book, Nixon chronicles his personal struggle with the pain of losing his father at age five in a devastating head-on car crash – an event that cast a two decade-long shadow over his life. Using a combination of direct truths and a touch of humor, Nixon walks you step by step through the process he used to overcome the tragedy that had dominated his life, and turn it into a life of triumph and success. The result is a compassionate guide that anyone can use to conquer emotional pain in all of its many forms. In this book, you’ll learn: How honoring your pain helps jumpstart the healing process Tools and tactics to avoid tragedy that dictate your future How to shift your mindset from victim to warrior How to use your pain for purpose instead of sadness Why rituals are powerful and how to use them to heal Permission to stop feeling guilty about claiming the happiness you deserve What the Personal Development Vortex is—and how to avoid it. ...and much more! Most of all, you’ll pinpoint the habits and thinking patterns you’ve been unconsciously using to sabotage your own progress, so you can overcome your pain and turn it into a catalyst for progress. The Cost of Broken Promises The cost of breaking promises to ourselves is unquantifiable. You eventually get to a place where you no longer believe the words that come out of your mouth. You eventually get to a place where you don't even trust yourself anymore. And that is a dangerous place to be in life. Broken promises lead to: *Lack of self-worth *No self-belief *Low or non-existent self-esteem *Zero trust in yourself If you're in this place, it's not too late to make a shift. It's not too late to rebuild your self-esteem. All you have to do is follow the steps we chat about in this podcast episode. Thanks for listening to the Thrive Forever Fit Show! My guest today is Amberly Lago an expert in the field of resilience, transformation, and health and wellness. She’s the author of True Grit and Grace which tells her inspiring story of how she turned a tragedy into triumph. Amberly is a former professional dancer, athlete, and fitness trainer whose life was turned upside down in 2010 when she was hit by an SUV while riding her motorcycle. Her multiple injuries included nearly shattering her right leg and severing the femoral artery. Amberly’s doctors informed her she had about a 1% chance of saving her leg and amputation was something she needed to prepare for. Amberly chose instead to fight and endured 34 surgeries to save her leg. In the process, however, she was diagnosed with CRPS, Complex Regional Pain syndrome (or what is sometimes referred to as the suicide disease because the chronic pain is so intense). Not surprisingly, she spiraled into depression. Amberly tried anything and everything to deal with her pain and depression but nothing seemed to work until she discovered and embraced the one thing that she credits with turning her life around: resilience. And while resilience does not get rid of her pain or make her challenges disappear she has discovered that resilience and grit is the superpower that will get her through any obstacle. Through her best-selling book, keynote speeches, workshops, and podcast Amberly is teaching and empowering others to tap into, nurture and flex their “grit muscle” to persevere through any challenge. And, in today’s episode she shares the five tools that each of us can use to thrive through our struggles and live life to the fullest. Other important lessons that Amberly learned during her transformation from a near death experience to living the fullest life she could have ever imagined today: Each of us can thrive despite our circumstances. RESILIENCE isn’t related to one single event that we experience. It’s a way of approaching life, day in and day out. Courage is contagious—so is fear. Surround yourself with courageous, fierce people. Fortunately, perfection is not a requirement, only progress. Happiness is a choice and so is despair....choose wisely. Gratitude turns denial into acceptance, makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates hope for tomorrow. God will never let what you lost be the best you ever had. Your best is yet to come! There are some events in life that change you dramatically. The thing you need to remember, though, is how that change will impact you in the long term. My guest today, Steve Datte, is a coach, mentor, and all around wonderful guy who lost his brother to suicide many years ago. Steve took the most pragmatic approach to this great loss and, instead of letting his brother’s death keep him from enjoying his life, he looked ahead. By picturing himself surviving and even happy 10, 20, 30 years down the road, he knew that the pain he was feeling was only temporary. Steve is one of the most inspiring men I know, and his inspiration reaches through his family, into his fitness center, to his private clients, and beyond. Today on the show, we’re talking about the loss that rocked Steve’s life and how he didn’t let it draw him down into depression. How taking a balanced approach to suicide helped shape the man he is today. Steve practices picturing life as a game and lives by the thought that we’re all just children in adult bodies. By holding onto that mantra, Steve looks at life through the eyes of a child, embracing the positive and celebrating the good. This has helped him be a better husband, father, coach, and manager. He believes that it’s never too late to reprogram your life to change the aspects that get you down, and roleplaying is a big part of this! Have you been affected by suicide? Do you know how to recognize when you’ve had enough of something? How do you prioritize play in your daily life? Leave me a comment on the episode page! In This Episode Why you need to find a job that you’re passionate about What the “10/20/30 years from now” theory is How to look at suicide pragmatically What happens when you start to picture life as a game What you can do to be a better manager Why you can always reprogram your life to make it more positive How roleplaying can help you work through difficult issues in your life Why it’s important to recognize when you’re done with something Quotes “Ten years from now, what’s this gonna be for me? Will I still be as upset as I am today? And I don’t know many things that 10 years down the road you’re gonna be as upset as in the moment, and if you can get your head there, you can get through just about anything.” (16:35) “There’s just a point where you’ve gotta let go of the guilt and the angst of what could you have done and where should you have been.” (20:34) “We get so caught up in what we do versus who we are.” (45:03) “It’s okay to quit so long as you leave, just don’t quit and stay.” (49:30) “I’ve had very few people choose to quit anything when they’re succeeding and they have work/life balance. Usually, when someone leaves, they’re either not succeeding or its impacting their life so much that it’s not worth it.” (57:50) Links Find Steve Datte fitness club, Life Time Athletic on Facebook If you liked this episode, you should probably check out these past episodes: 016: How To Build A Stronger You By Working Through Your Trauma w/ Kim Bao 011: How To Allow Your Passions To Dictate Your Future w/ Wynona Karbo 008: Overcoming Physical & Mental Stressors Through Cryotherapy w/ Joel Cruzada Come hang out with an amazing group of badass women in a private, supportive community, Bad-Ass Women Owning Sexy Check out the full show notes for this episode!
