The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The announcer is Ken Carpenter. Barbara Jo Allen (born Marian Barbara Henshall; September 2, 1906 – September 14, 1974) was an American actress. She was also known as Vera Vague, the spinster character she created and portrayed on radio and in films during the 1940s and 1950s. She based the character on a woman she had seen delivering a PTA literature lecture in a confused manner. As Vague, she popularized the catch phrase "You dear boy!"

This show was broadcast just 3 days before Japan surrendered and World War II ended. Songstress, Francis Langford hosts the show which features Spike Jones and His City Slickers and singer Tony Romano. Francis Langford had done many overseas shows for the USO during WW II and was very popular with the servicemen. The show comes from an Army-Air-Force base in Sacramento, California. As usual, Spike Jones and His City Slickers play a few tunes as only Spike Jones and His City Slickers could play them... Francis Langford gets in a couple of numbers as well. All and all an enjoyable show with music and a comedy skit. Spike and the crew play "Siam I Am" and "Blue Danube" ... sort of! :) The show ends with a medley of songs with Francis, Tony, and Spike Jones. Retired agent Dave Nadolski served in the FBI for 21 years. He was assigned to the Detroit, Atlanta, New York, and Boston Field Offices. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Dave Nadolski reviews the Loomis Fargo Vault Sting which introduced an FBI criminal informant into a violent and heavily armed Boston crime gang conspiring to forcefully take over an armored car company’s money vault containing one hundred million dollars. Due to the heroic efforts of Tony Romano, Dave Nadolski’s informant, the Loomis Fargo Vault Sting was successfully concluded with the convictions of all four members of the gang. During his career, Dave conducted investigations involving foreign counterintelligence matters, public corruption, civil right violations, bank robberies and major crimes, gang investigations, and government fraud violations. He ended his career in the Boston Division as a squad supervisor. Since his Bureau retirement, Dave has worked as a licensed private investigator, a corporate security supervisor, and most recently, as a realtor. Dave is currently writing a book about the Loomis Fargo vault sting, the biggest case of his career. Where My Body Ends and the World Begins (Allium Press, 2017) imagines what it might have been like for one of the survivors of a tragic fire that took place on December 1, 1958, in a Catholic school on Chicago’s west side. The fire broke out just before the end of the day at Our Lady of the Angels School and went unnoticed for a critical amount of time. Ninety-two children and three nuns were killed.  The ‘Angels’ fire is still considered to be one of Chicago’s most horrendous tragedies. In his book, author Tony Romano imagines twenty-year old Anthony Lazzaro, who along with his best friend Maryann, survived the fire. The story opens with Anthony, suffering from an unnamed mental illness.  He deliberately breaks his own leg, which had started to feel foreign to his body. Lipschultz, the retired cop who lives next door, thinks Anthony may have set the fire and that his strange behavior is just another sign of his guilt.  Since the fire, Anthony’s family has fallen apart – his father disappears, and his mother takes a job far from home. In this beautifully-written, sensitive novel, Tony Romano considers how trauma can be overcome through the love of family and community. Learn more about your ad choices.
