Jean Hersholt plays Dr. Christian, a country Doctor in the small town of "Rivers-End." Show was so popular and Hersholt so believable in character the he got many letters asking for medical advice. This was a doctor who knew everyone in town... made house calls... bartered at times when people did not have the money to pay. Sponsor was Vaseline Petroeum Jelly (commercials included). Rosemary DeCamp played Nurse Judy... other actresses also played her... Lurene Tuttle, Kathleen Fitz, and Helen Claire. In this episode a man has been accused of stealing $22 out of the cash register of his boss. He says he did not do it... what we need here is "Truth Pills." The man's name is "Windy"... hence the title "The Story of Windy and the Truth Pills" This was aired over 85 years ago and the story is still enjoyable... audio quality very good. Karen Ocamb is now a leading LGBTQ journalist in LA, but decades ago she was a cranky teenager on the East Coast, who was very gently reproved by Paul Newman over some freshly caught fish. When Newman died, Ocamb filed a loving commentary on her two encounters with the star. Then, since Newman won the Academy's Jean Hersholt award at the Oscars in 1994, another distinguished journalist, Hollywood historian Alex Ben Block, goes to the Hollywood Walk of Fame to tell us who Jean Hersholt was and why he's beloved in the Industry. Both of these pieces originally aired in October of 2008.   Support for this podcast comes from Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people. He of course told them to take two aspirin and a glass of water and sent them a bill for $35, which was a lot of money back in the 1930's. This soap opera played like a serial drama (as each episode was complete), but to keep listeners abreast of the 'goings-on', past activity was referred to within other episodes, as is done with all other soap operas. Dr. Christian was portrayed by Jean Hersholt; who also played Shirley Temple's 'Alps-Dwelling' grandfather in the movie "Heidi." The $2000 award winner ($32,000 today) and several $350 winners ($5600 today) are interviewed. Yes, many of the scripts were not written by a writing staff, but by listeners! Of course, the scripts were professionally edited, but it was a huge draw for the show. On this track we are going to the doctor's office... Doctor Christian's office. You won't need your insurance or Medicare card, just your ears and your imagination as we visit River's End in a story originally broadcast on January 9, 1938, entitled "The Auto Accident." Jean Hersholt stars as Dr. Paul Christian... the only doctor in River's End. His nurse was played by Rosemary DeCamp. He makes house calls, knows everyone in town by their first name and is extremely compassionate offering more than just physical care to his patients. He is a beloved character... and audiences thought so too as this show was on the radio for 17 years beginning in 1937. He was so convincing in his role that he received hundreds of letters asking for his medical opinion! I have classified the show as a "Medical Soap Opera" and this track and other Dr. Christian episodes can be found in the "Soap Operas and Medical Dramas" Playlist. Jean Hersholt played the grandfather in the 1937 film "Heidi" to Shirley Temple as his granddaughter, who was only 8 years old at the time.
