This week’s guest is Andy Lee - one half of Australia’s most popular comedy duo ever. He and Hamish Blake started off doing TV and radio at university, before making their commercial radio debut on Fox FM doing the 10pm-to-midnight slot on Mondays. We discuss that in this episode as well as their network TV debut on Channel 7’s The Hamish and Andy Show. As of this moment, Hamish and Andy have enjoyed nearly two decades of unparalleled radio and television success with their drive show on Fox FM often reaching 2.5 million listeners and their TV shows such as Real Stories, Hamish and Andy’s Gap Year, True Story with Hamish and Andy, and Hamish and Andy’s Perfect Holiday getting huge ratings and playing all over the world. In the past few years, Hamish and Andy have branched into more solo work, with Andy hosting The Cube on Channel 10 and The Hundred on Channel Nine. During our chat, Andy and I talk a lot of shop, deep dive into his friendship with Shane Warne, and conclude that there’s no reason you can’t eat pasta on consecutive nights. Please forgive my croaky  voice during this episode. You’d think I’d shut up because I was unbearable to listen to – but, no, I seemed to have a lot to say.Andy discusses turning into his Dad: This is a public episode. Enjoy two free detective adventures of Boston Blackie A) 10/1/46 The Undersea Murder w/ Dick Kollmar B) 5/28/47 The Ghost of Florence Newton w/ Dick Kollmar Horatio Black was known to friend and foe as Boston Blackie -- an ex-jewel thief and safecracker constantly suspected of crimes he did not commit and forced to play the role of detective to clear his name.  His girlfriend, Mary Wesley, assisted Blackie from time to time, as did his pal Shorty.  Forced to defend himself against the accusations of New York Police Inspector Faraday, Blackie always managed to stay one step ahead of the cops in solving a crime.  The wisecracks exchanged between Blackie and Faraday made the program an enjoyable mix of comedy and mystery.  Chester Morris played the character in 15 Boston Blackie films for Columbia.  When The Amos ‘N' Andy Show needed a summer replacement in 1944, Chester Morris was lured to the NBC microphone for a short-lived Boston Blackie series sponsored by Rinso. The following year, Boston Blackie was syndicated by Ziv with Dorothy Kilgallen's husband, Dick Kollmar, in the title role.  This syndicated series lasted until 1950 and featured Maurice Tarplin as Inspector Faraday with Leslie Woods and Jan Miner as Mary. In 1951, the series made the leap to television starring Kent Taylor as Blackie, Lois Collier as Mary and Frank Orth as Faraday.

This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 96: Halloween On The Air (1943 - 1953) ___________ One summer day in 1948, Willam S. Paley received a proposal from Lew Wasserman and Taft Shreiber—President and VP of The Music Corporation of America. They asked if CBS would be interested in buying The Amos N' Andy Show, then airing on NBC. At the time, U.S. Citizens were taxed 77% of all income over $70,000. However, if the duo behind Amos N' Andy, Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden incorporated and sold their show to the network, they would be taxed under capital gains laws at 25%. NBC wouldn't allow the deal. But William Paley jumped at the chance. Amos n' Andy moved over on October 10th. Shortly after, Lew Wasserman phoned again. He asked if CBS would be interested in purchasing The Jack Benny Program. Benny organized his activities into a corporation. Paley and Wasserman negotiated an agreement for CBS to buy it for $2.26 Million. NBC sent president Niles Trammel to California with orders to keep Benny at NBC. When William Paley heard that Trammel was on his way to California, he called Benny directly to arrange an in-person meeting. Benny invited him to Los Angeles. Paley and CBS counsel Ralph Colin set up shop at the Beverly Hills Hotel. RCA head David Sarnoff was there as well, to help ensure Niles Trammel would secure the deal. NBC responded with a major counteroffer. Lew Wasserman intervened. CBS matched the counteroffer, and an impressed Jack Benny signed it. Sponsor American Tobacco was uneasy. Paley convinced them to back the move by offering compensation for every rating point Benny's show lost. As all of this was happening, The Jack Benny Program broadcast live on the evening of Sunday, October 31st, 1948.

This week brings an Iowa icon into the studio, Scott Siepker. The Carroll County native sits down with Tim to talk all things Iowa. Siepker has made a name, and brand for himself, by celebrating the Iowa lifestyle and being passionate about Iowa. Siepker's is a very talented jack of all trades. From appearances on the Murph and Andy Show on Fridays to working on original film projects, Siepker is known for his storytelling, comedy, and some really stupid Quickie Polls.  I love playing the villain Like Scott Siepker himself, this interview has a little bit of something for everyone. Growing up in Carroll County, Siepker's family has a hypothetical background with moonshine that has spurred a passion film project about prohibition in Iowa. His short lived career as a (self proclaimed) 3-point threat playing alongside Adam Haluska and talented golfer are part of his love of sports and the Carroll Tigers. Siepker's greatest claim to fame so far is probably the character he created; the Iowa Nice Guy. The viral videos sharing what we all know to be true, that Iowans are the greatest people in America, and show off his satirical skills. The Iowa Nice Guy is like the inner voice of all Iowans who are too nice to say what they are really thinking about Nebraska. The Iowa Nice Guy made his way onto ESPN and popped up across social media platforms. Creating a character focused on Iowa was part of a larger belief of Siepker's to prove that an actor, director, producer, and filmmaker can thrive in Iowa. His documentary on Jack Trice and Nile Kinnick, stage work, and countless other projects are proving him correct.

Amos 'n' Andy was a situation comedy popular in the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s. The show began as one of the first radio comedy serials, written and voiced by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll and originating from station WMAQ in Chicago, Illinois. After the series was first broadcast in 1928, it grew in popularity and became a huge influence on the radio serials that followed. Amos 'n' Andy creators Gosden and Correll were white actors familiar with minstrel traditions. They met in Durham, North Carolina in 1920, and by the fall of 1925, they were performing nightly song-and-patter routines on the Chicago Tribune's station WGN. Since the Tribune syndicated Sidney Smith's popular comic strip The Gumps, which had successfully introduced the concept of daily continuity, WGN executive Ben McCanna thought the notion of a serialized drama could also work on radio. He suggested to Gosden and Correll that they adapt The Gumps to radio. They instead proposed a series about "a couple of colored characters" and borrowed certain elements of The Gumps. Their new series, Sam 'n' Henry, began January 12, 1926, fascinating radio listeners throughout the Midwest. That series became popular enough that in late 1927 Gosden and Correll requested that it be distributed to other stations on phonograph records in a "chainless chain" concept that would have been the first use of radio syndication as we know it today. When WGN rejected the idea, Gosden and Correll quit the show and the station that December. Contractually, their characters belonged to WGN, so when Gosden and Correll left WGN, they performed in personal appearances but could not use the character names from the radio show.THIS EPISODE:April 4, 1954. Amos 'n' Andy was officially transferred by NBC from the Blue Network to the Red Network in 1935, although the vast majority of stations carrying the show remained the same. Several months later, Gosden and Correll moved production of the show from NBC's Merchandise Mart studios in Chicago to Hollywood. After a long and successful run with Pepsodent, the program changed sponsors in 1938 to Campbell's Soup; because of Campbell's closer relationship with CBS, the series switched to that network on April 3, 1939.In 1943, after 4,091 episodes, the radio program went from a 15-minute CBS weekday dramatic serial to an NBC half-hour weekly comedy. While the five-a-week show often had a quiet, easygoing feeling, the new version was a full-fledged sitcom in the Hollywood sense, with a regular studio audience (for the first time in the show's history) and an orchestra. More outside actors, including many African American comedy professionals, were brought in to fill out the cast. Many of the half-hour programs were written by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, later the writing team behind Leave It To Beaver and The Munsters. In the new version, Amos became a peripheral character to the more dominant Andy and Kingfish duo, although Amos was still featured in the traditional Christmas show where he explains the Lord's Prayer to his daughter.THIS EPISODE:May 25, 1945. Sponsored by Rinso, the series continued until September 15 of that year. Unlike the concurrent films, Blackie had a steady romantic interest in the radio show: Lesley Woods appeared as Blackie's girlfriend Mary Wesley. Harlow Wilcox was the show's announcer. On April 11, 1945, Richard Kollmar took over the title role in a radio series syndicated by Frederic W. Ziv to Mutual and other network outlets. Over 200 episodes of this series were produced between 1944 and October 25, 1950. Other sponsors included Lifebuoy Soap, Champagne Velvet beer, and R&H beer. While investigating mysteries, Blackie invaribly encountered harebrained Police Inspector Farraday (Maurice Tarplin) and always solved the mystery to Farraday's amazement. Initially, friction surfaced in the relationship between Blackie and Farraday, but as the series continued, Farraday recognized Blackie's talents and requested assistance. Blackie dated Mary Wesley (Jan Miner), and for the first half of the series, his best pal Shorty was always on hand. The Amos 'n' Andy Show - Amos 'n' Andy was a situation comedy popular in the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s. Amos 'n' Andy began March 19, 1928, on WMAQ, and prior to airing each program they recorded their show on 78 rpm disks at Marsh Laboratories, Orlando R. Marsh, owner. Initially, Gosden and Correll portrayed all the male roles. Between the two, they voiced over 170 distinct characterizations in the show's first decade. With the episodic drama and suspense heightened by cliffhanger endings, Amos 'n' Andy reached an ever-expanding radio audience. It was one of the earliest success stories of radio syndication, and at least 70 stations besides WMAQ carried the program using prerecorded records. Amos Jones and Andy Brown worked on a farm near Atlanta, Georgia, and during the episodes of the first week, they made plans to find a better life in Chicago, despite warnings from a friend. With four ham and cheese sandwiches and $24, they bought train tickets and headed for Chicago where they lived in a State Street rooming house and experienced some rough times before launching their own business, the Fresh Air Taxi Company.

With the listening audience increasing in the spring and summer of 1928, the show's success prompted the Pepsodent Company to bring it to the NBC Blue Network on August 19, 1929. At this time the Blue Network was not heard on stations in the West. Western listeners complained to NBC, they wanted to hear the show. Under special arrangements Amos 'n' Andy debuted coast-to-coast November 28, 1929 on NBC's Pacific Orange Network and continued on the Blue. At the same time, the serial's central characters -- Amos, Andy and George "The Kingfish" Stevens -- relocated from Chicago to Harlem. Amos was naÃve but honest, hard-working and (after his 1933 marriage to Ruby Taylor) a dedicated family man. Andy was more blustering, with overinflated self-confidence. Andy, being a dreamer, tended to let Amos do most of the work. Their lodge leader, the Kingfish, was always trying to lure the two into get-rich-quick schemes. Other characters included John Augustus "Brother" Crawford, an industrious but long-suffering family man; Henry Van Porter, a social-climbing real estate and insurance salesman; Frederick Montgomery Gwindell, a hard-charging newspaperman; William Lewis Taylor, the well-spoken, college-educated father of Amos's fiancee; and "Lightning", a slow-moving Stepin Fetchit-type character. The Kingfish's catch phrase "Holy mackerel!" soon entered the American lexicon.

THIS WEEK: Duncan and Richard interview James Rondeau, superstar curator and Cecelia Edefalk, superstar artist. We just bought the right to the word "superstar" so we are compelled to use it as much as possible. Stealing liberally from the AIC's press release bank we now paste the following for your enlightenment. "The Art Institute of Chicago presents the first solo U.S. exhibition of Swedish artist Cecilia Edefalk as part of its Focus exhibitions of contemporary art. Double White Venus, a series of 12 paintings all titled Double White Venus, will be on view in Gallery 139 of the museum from February 2 to April 23, 2006. Born in 1954, Edefalk draws viewers in by exploring, through repetition as well as innovative installations, the mechanics of making and looking at painted images. Edefalk works slowly and deliberately, in direct contrast to our high-speed, image-based world; she began Double White Venus in 1999 and completed its 12 paintings over the course of nearly 7 years." James Rondeau is the Frances and Thomas Dittmer Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, and a damn nice guy. He has overseen the significant growth and expansion in recent years of the Art Institute of Chicago's commitment to contemporary art. Brian Andrews our west coast correspondent has really been earning his keep these days. This week he interviews Andrew Bancroft aka the superstar rapper Jelly D. from the brilliant Maximum Wage video. "The son of an ex-pool hustler and former Catholic nun, Andrew Bancroft grew up in Maine, where he developed an early love of acting and music. Andrew graduated with honors from Wesleyan UniversitySan Francisco in 2000. Andrew's many film credits include the title role in Gabriel Angel Of The Lord, as well as directing and starring as rapper "Jelly Donut" in Illbilly's mock music video Maximum Wage .
