This week we sit down with Arden Young from Sound Investigations to discuss how the Traffickinghub campaign inspired her to become an investigative journalist aiming to expose the criminal activity within MindGeek/Aylo, Pornhub's parent company. As a child actor in Hollywood, Arden was exposed to the predatory nature of the industry and witnessed inappropriate behavior involving children. Growing up, her father was a private investigator and lawyer, often including her in investigations to show her the ropes. Arden left Hollywood and her acting career in her early twenties, after which she learned of the Traffickinghub campaign. With investigative journalism in her blood, she sought to further the campaign's efforts with a goal of getting employees to admit to continuing illegal activity. With their own personal funds, the two-person team at Sound Investigations set their sights on MindGeek in Montreal and spent five months in the field interviewing subjects and gathering information. They released their first video in September 2023. Since then, they have released six more videos with incriminating evidence against Pornhub/Mindgeek/Aylo. The creators of the website, which purported to be a legitimate adult entertainment site, actually coerced young women into performing sex acts on camera under false pretenses, and then posted the videos online without their consent. Benjamin Nolot and Helen Taylor give the inside scoop about the trials and successes of the global #Traffickinghub campaign that held Pornhub and its executives accountable for distributing and profiting from criminal image-based sexual abuse, including videos of rape, child abuse, and sex trafficking. In early 2020, after one of Exodus Cry's directors published "Time to Shut Pornhub Down" in the Washington Examiner, a grassroots movement exploded, demanding the "world's biggest porn site" be shut down and held accountable. The petition amassed over two million signers from 192 countries, Exodus Cry's animated video on it went viral with 34 million views, and, after the New York Times featured the story on their front page, Pornhub was faced with an atomic PR situation. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and other major brands cut ties with Pornhub, the site deleted 80% of their content—about 10 million videos—overnight, and they were hit with lawsuits from victims totaling over $1 billion. Pornhub's CEO and COO have recently stepped down and the brand has been kicked off Roku, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. This nonprofit, #TraffickingHub documents abuses and calls for the site to be shut down. There are 118 million images downloaded a day of child sexual abuse and exploitation. According to #Nicholas Kristof of the #New York Times, Pornhub prides itself on being the cheery, winking face of naughty, the website that buys a billboard in Times Square and donates to organizations fighting for racial equity and offers ‘steamy' content to get people through Covid-19.The Justice Defend fund was created to empower survivors of sex trafficking, child sexual abuse material (previously known as pornography), and image-based sexual abuse to pursue justice through sustainable strategic litigation funding. Emmy Myers, a local survivor of sex trafficking and advocate for victims, is working to change that statistic. Myers's pimp kept her high pretty much all of the time and used drugs as a way to keep her from protesting the arrangement. Myers was “lucky” in a sense. None of the men she slept with were violent with her. Most of them were respected, successful career-driven men. Most of them had families at home. "This is what surprises America," Myers said. "It's not these big, fat smelly gross guys. It's often very prominent men in the community. The issue isn't just something from a Hollywood movie." Myers is the founder of Lacey's Hope Project, a Wisconsin-based project she started in memory of a close friend and fellow victim of sex trafficking. While she was fortunately rescued, Myers emphasized this could happen to anyone. Sometimes when we use statistics, we inadvertently distance ourselves from what we're really talking about – what's really going on. That could happen with today's episode. I have to share some statistics with you, but as you'll hear from our guest, it's not about the statistics. It's about the people, mostly female, mostly young, and all too often children who are victims of the worst kind of predators. They're victims of sex traffickers. Child sex trafficking is the most notorious form of human trafficking. The most common victims are homeless children, runaways, and young people in the child welfare system. You would think the traffickers make their money from selling the children into sex with strangers, and they do. But that's not where they make the big money. The big money is right in front of you. It's on your phone, on your computer. The Internet. Pornography is one of the biggest businesses on the Internet.  But just calling this “pornography” may be too nice.  Website and porn sites and porn site users engage in an economy that often features child abuse. Victims of child sex trafficking are depicted in photos, videos and other images that feature actual rape, real violent attacks and abuse. People pay to watch the live abuse of children on video streaming services. Porn sites attract over 100 million visits to their sites each day. They generate 47 billion visit per year. If you were to try to watch all of the content in one year of a major porn site, it would take you 169 years just to watch it.
