The year is 1980. The U.S. National Debt is a paltry $900 Billion, the word “yuppie” appears for the first time in print, the Pac-Man videogame is released in arcades everywhere, Mount St. Helens explodes in Washington state, and Cable News Network (also known as CNN) becomes a thing.   In the world of metal, Iron Maiden release their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath reinvent themselves with new frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals and release Heaven and Hell, and AC/DC regroup after the tragic loss of Bon Scott and release Back In Black featuring new vocalist Brian Johnson, an album that would go on to sell more than 40 million copies and become one of the biggest selling albums of all time.   Just as time and technology continued marching forward, the hard rock of the 70's continued its evolution into a new direction with a faster, heavier, and more aggressive sound beginning in 1980 that would become even faster, heavier, and more aggressive throughout the 80's.   Get ready for a taste of “Something Haunted” from the “Necronomidonkeykongimicon” and find out why “you gotta watch for the flops” if you want to get in the spirit and enjoy the FIFA World Cup.    Discover which dinosaur is “the biggest dinosaur”, understand the rules and regulations regarding “flip-flops”, find out which type of rooster has the best breasts, and be sure to “have a nice June” when you JOIN US as we dive headlong into the year that gave us the birth of modern metal with THE YEAR OF OUR RIFF LORD – 1980.

In this episode of Running Free, I sit down with Frédo Tranchand – one of the most technically skilled and thoughtful athletes in trail running today. From elite orienteering to becoming World Champion in the Short Trail at the 2025 World Mountain & Trail Running Championships, Frédo's journey is built on patience, consistency, and learning how to adapt. What stands out immediately is his grounded approach to performance. As he puts it:“There are no secrets in training – just consistency and doing the basics right.”We talk about his progression from 12th in Thailand to 9th in Innsbruck and eventually winning gold in Canfranc — a development that wasn't driven by radical change, but by refining what already worked. At the World Championships, things didn't go perfectly. One of the defining moments came when everything started to fall apart:“I started to cramp and was really struggling… I was afraid to lose everything on that climb.” That's actually the final uphill in Canfranc – the moment where I stood on the side of the course, cheering for Frédo and the other athletes.Instead of panic, he chose focus:“I wasn't confident – I just told myself: now I give everything.”This conversation goes beyond performance. It's about staying present under pressure, adapting when plans break, and trusting your process — even when it doesn't feel perfect.ABOUT FRÉDÉRIC TRANCHANDBorn May 25, 1988 in FranceFormer elite orienteerBronze medalist at the World Orienteering Championships (Sprint, 2010)World Champion Short Trail (2025)Known for technical terrain skills, downhill speed, and race intelligenceCurrently based in Annecy, France, after several years training in Trondheim, Norway.WATCH THE EPISODEThis episode is also available as a video podcast on Spotify and YouTube.Follow Frédo on InstagramMore about my work & offersTrail Running Camps: https://www.runventure.at/events1:1 Coaching & Corporate offers (B2B): https://www.reiterflorian.at/Strong Teams – Strong LeadersOur program for leaders and teams with Ursula Rakowetz & Florian Reiter: https://hr-entwicklungsraum.at/entwicklungsraum-runventure/Podcast projects

The investment giant Vanguard is retreating from its climate initiatives as part of a $30 million settlement deal for an anti-trust lawsuit brought by Republican state attorneys general. The lawsuit alleged that Vanguard and fellow asset managers BlackRock and State Street, which are still fighting the suit, conspired to kill the coal industry. Vanguard did not admit to wrongdoing but is now barred from participating in climate investment watchdog groups such as Ceres.   Also, facing pain at the pump, US drivers looking to buy an electric vehicle now have more and cheaper choices than ever. But with the $7500 federal tax credit for new electric vehicles now gone, you may be wondering whether EVs are the smart buy in 2026. We share some insights about EV options, cost and the charging network.   And since the US capture of President Nicolás Maduro in early January, there has been a lot of discussion about Venezuela's massive oil reserves.

Laila Mickelwait's organization Traffickinghub was pivotal in the “biggest takedown of content in Internet history” after pressure forced PornHub to remove 50 million images and videos – over 90% of its content. Now the activist is pushing for a new US federal law to mandate third-party age verification for all adult websites. But could her proposal backfire? Critics warn: though the intention is to protect children, requiring all users to submit ID would effectively create the world's largest target for hackers – even bigger than the 2015 Ashley Madison leaks. How can we protect children online while balancing the privacy norms and free speech of adults? Laila Mickelwait is the Founder/CEO of Justice Defense Fund and Traffickinghub. What if the heart of Christianity was not about striving, but about freedom? This week in Galatians, Paul is going to challenge the believers in Galatia and us to rethink what true freedom means. Christ sets us free, not just from sin, but from the pressure to prove ourselves by keeping religious rules or living up to others' expectations. We're not meant to return to old chains of performance or comparison, but to stand firm in the freedom Jesus has given us. The heartbeat of Church on the Rock is to help people discover how they can LOVE God and LOVE one another, LIVE with passion, purpose and freedom, and LEAD others to this same experience in Jesus. She described this as a condition where you can feel, think, hear and see completely normally but are unable to move a single muscle. She explored the transformation from being an active and passionate runner to being helpless and requiring help for every need.Kate chronicled the onset of her symptoms with a headache and slurred speech, and the subsequent progression of her symptoms with loss of consciousness that culminated in being completely locked-in. She also recalled the thoughts and emotions that dominated her mind in the subsequent stages of her illness. Our conversation also covered such concepts as the pessimism that permeates the attitude to the care of people in locked-in, the potential for completely recovery even the most extreme cases, the role of intense rehabilitation and determination in recovering from locked-in state, and the concept of neuroplasticity. She particularly highlighted how she brought her passionate attitude to running to her rehabilitation.Kate is an inspirational speaker and will also discuss the impact her advocacy and peer mentoring has made to thousands of families around the world. Running Free has been showcased on BBC Jeremy Vine, ITV This Morning, BBC Breakfast, The One Show, Women's Hour, Newsnight, Loose Women, BBC Worldwide, India, South Africa, USA, South America etc. In addition, she founded a charity just three months from leaving hospital in 2011.

Ami Cullen grew up loving horses and competing in hunter/jumper events. But when it came to her career, she decided that law would be her calling. She graduated from law school and began work with a firm in Maryland working on medical malpractice cases. Then a visit to a Colorado dude ranch changed everything.  In Running Free: An Incredible Story of Love, Survival, and How 200 Horses Trapped in a Wildfire Helped One Woman Find Her Soul Cullen shares a lightly fictionalized version of the journey she's been on for more than a decade. Just as Cullen once did, Running Free's main character Emme Muller visits the C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado, on a girl's trip and falls in love with the wrangling way of life. She decides to leave her life as an East Coast lawyer to work at the ranch—initially planning it as a six-month sabbatical from her career. Instead, she stays, eventually becoming head wrangler and marrying another employee at the dude ranch. But in October 2020, the East Troublesome Fire, the second-largest wildfire in Colorado history, imperiled the C Lazy U Ranch. Muller has to work with her employees and horse-loving community members to evacuate the ranch and save 200 horses from a relentless and rapidly shifting fire.  That part of Running Free is also true, Cullen tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles in this episode of The Modern Law Library. Now the director of equestrian operations at the C Lazy U Ranch, it was Cullen's responsibility to save the herd of horses through two harrowing wildfire evacuations and an ice storm that sent fleeing horse trailers careening off the roads back in 2020. After the fire was out and recovery had begun, Cullen felt a compulsion to put down her experience in writing. The first attempt produced 80 pages that read like a legal brief, she tells Rawles. By fictionalizing her experiences and creating some composite characters, she was able to write Running Free, her first novel. In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Cullen discusses what it was like to decide to leave the law, what it's like to help run a dude ranch, leadership skills she learned from working with horses, and why you're never too old to take up equestrianship.
