In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project: Founder and President, Jesse Gould; and Director of Development and Head of Family Relations, Allison Wilson. Gould gives a background of Heroic Hearts Project and discusses their current projects and future goals, and Wilson talks about her nonprofit, The Hope Project, and its recent merger with HHP to bring more of a focus to the other side of veteran healing: the families of veterans. While Heroic Hearts and other veteran-aligned organizations have been an answer to many vets unable to find help otherwise (and frustrated with the inconsistencies of the VA), they talk a lot about that missing piece – how crucial it is to have family involved in a veteran's reintegration, and how that healing can impact future generations. "The Veteran's Guide to Psychedelics: A Preparation and Integration Workbook" was recently released, with all proceeds going to HHP, and they are hosting their first Gala event, "Operation: Freedom To Heal," this week, December 5, in Los Angeles. The goal of the event is to fundraise, gather community, and recognize the supporters who have gotten Heroic Hearts to where it is today, and will feature live and silent auctions and a performance by Melissa Etheridge. A few weeks ago, we had Jeremy Walker on The Whole Counsel, and he introduced us to an organization in Zambia called Hope Project. This ministry works to take children off the streets and provide them with four pillars of support: physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual. We were so moved by Hope Project's work and ministry that we wanted to have its founder, Gilbert Mulubwa, on the podcast so he could speak directly to you. We invited Jeremy back to help us cover all our bases. Because were having a conversation on three continents, we had to overcome some technical difficulties with the audio and video quality, which was not up to our usual standard. We appreciate your patience with that. We encourage you to see the show notes for more information about the Hope Project, including how you can sponsor a child. The vast oceans surrounding us are a remarkable source of sustenance, prosperity, and vitality. They regulate our climate, nourish us, and support numerous industries. Yet, the oceans face increasing pressures from climate change, overfishing and pollution. Now a new threat looms for the ocean. If allowed to go ahead, deep-sea mining will destroy this critical and awe-inspiring source of life. Come learn about The Ocean Hope Project, an initiative to prevent the next disaster from starting. We will explore the deep-sea, why we don't need to mine the ocean and the growing global resistance to this new form of ecocide. In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project team: Director of Donor Development and founder of The Hope Project, Allison Wilson; and Director of Research and founder of Hystelica, Dr. Grace Blest-Hopley. They discuss how The Hope Project – a nonprofit that supports spouses of veterans, Gold Star Wives, and female veterans with scholarships to psychedelic healing retreats, integration, community, etc. – merged with Heroic Hearts Project, and why this is such a necessary part of the veteran healing story: How does a family hold space for a vet returning to a suddenly alien civilian life (especially after a psychedelic journey)? How does a spouse deal with their own trauma from constant worry and isolation? Wilson and Blest-Hopley are learning that, for many spouses, having their own experience (and with other spouses) has been incredibly beneficial. They talk about: The concept of secondary PTSD (often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue') and the many ways it can manifest How Heroic Hearts is working with Imperial College London to use veteran retreats as real-world observational research The importance of involving family in the healing process, and how positive outcomes can trickle down to children The need for more research into how PTSD and the effects of psychedelics are different in women based on their unique physiology (as most studies have focused on men) and more! Jeremy Walker, pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church in Crawley, England (a town just south of London) is a long-time friend of Media Gratiae. We turn to him when we have difficult questions and value his wisdom and godliness. Several months ago, while Jeremy was preaching in Lusaka, Zambia, he was approached by a man who was burdened for the orphans on the streets of Lusaka. This man had been seeking a way to help educate, evangelize, and disciple these children. After a short conversation, Jeremy understood the need and decided he had to become involved in the ministry himself. Currently, The Hope Project is seeking to provide education so the children can learn to read Scripture for themselves. While meeting their spiritual needs, the team behind The Hope Project is also working to meet their physical needs. We pray this special episode of our podcast will pique your interest, and you will begin praying for The Hope Project. In our second episode of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll, we got the chance to interview Charlotte Cruz, who is the co-founder of Alice Mushrooms. Who doesn't love that? We picked her brain about the benefits of functional mushrooms, the rise in popularity of mushrooms in general from using them as medicine, to microdosing to tripping, and also learned about the struggle to legalize Psilocybin in this country. Hope Project helps kids in the areas of nutrition, education, shelter, and spiritual development. Through long-term partnerships with pastors and missionaries, this organization acts as the bridge between the people who want to help and the children who so desperately need it. Hope Project was founded in 2013 by Than and Megan Graffam. Previous to Hope Project, Than and Megan had been kids pastors in the local church for 10 years. They played with the question, “What if we had unlimited resources?” Though far from their reality, they knew that if they had unlimited resources they would find pastors and missionaries around the world who were helping children, hear their vision, and do what they could to help equip the local church to fulfill Biblical commands. Hope Project currently has long-term partners in 3 different countries, two in Central America and one in Southeast Asia. Than and Megan have a desire to expand to 6 countries total and believe over time that can be possible.

I just love this what this organization is doing to help kids who have been permanently removed from their birth parents by protective services and who are currently in Foster Care, waiting to find their "Forever Family". They do this by producing an individual video that showcases these kids with their personalities and interests out front and center. These REELS are then shared on social media, with church groups and service organizations with the goal of helping make connections for the kids with would be adoptive families. Kaycee Stanley started THE REEL HOPE Project during her time working as a youth pastor in Elk River and now it is a thriving entity with over 300 kids featured. She also speaks about the foster care system and the societal challenges posed by kids who become adults and don't have family as a life base. The numbers she shared are staggering about people in the penial system, in abusive relationships and more about how they themselves can end up having kids entering the foster care system. These kids do not have what so many of us take for granted. Many people cannot differentiate between spirituality and religion, although these are two distinct concepts. For many, a relationship with a higher power takes a back seat to a written law and how it's communicated by others. Religion is what these individuals go through. They try to practice it correctly while adhering to the set rules. And because they are imperfect people, they mess it up. Because of this, many people have the unfortunate experience of feeling excluded in that environment. As a result, many wind up being their own higher power, leading to self-centeredness, pride, and disappointment because they continually let themselves down. In 2019, Trey Steele founded The Hope Project. After serving on church staff for six years, Trey realized in order to reach more people with the Good News of the Gospel, he would need to take the message to them. As a veteran CrossFit coach and former gym owner, Trey saw the opportunity sitting in community fitness gyms like his around the globe. “People don't join a community fitness gym, like a CrossFit gym, just to get fit. They join to be part of a community and something bigger than themselves.” It's community gyms where The Hope Project is focused. “What we're really trying to do is build a community within the community. When we introduce The Hope Project to a gym, our goal is to ignite a movement for spiritual fitness. I started this with a vision that people could learn practical ways to explore and express their faith, all while in a fitness setting.” Trey holds a Masters Degree in Christian Leadership, is married to his lovely wife Casey, and has three amazing children. In this episode, you will learn the value of personal relationships with each other as humans and with a higher power, the difference between religion and spirituality, and how spirituality and fitness are related. "I think I would tell my younger self to not be afraid to commit to wanting better for yourself. I think especially as women, we are encouraged to fit roles and that often means pausing what we want or what we want to do to support others; to be there for others; to push others up. And as much as that's important, I think that I would definitely tell my younger self to try to take a chance at a better life - a better future - for me because it's scary but you meet a lot of really cool people doing it who are doing good things and want to be there for you, too." Our texts this week are here Our prayer for this week – “A liturgy before serving others” from Every Moment Holy (vol 1) “All day long, as I watch the breeze toss these clothes in the wind, I imagine my prayers spinning away over the tops of the trees. This is good work, this prayer. This is good prayer, this work. So is digging in the garden, cleaning the chicken pens, washing the potatoes, doing the dishes. I know there are people who would give anything to do these things, people whose bodies have become too numb, too busy, too old or painful to do them. These are the practices that sustain life—not only my life and the lives entwined with mine, but the lives of all living beings.” Barbara Brown Taylor, Altar in the World (p. 46-47) Tabitha-type projects worth checking out: Hookin' for Hope Project: https://olivebranchministry.org/faith-in-harm-reduction-1 Knitting for Peace Project: https://www.knitting4peace.org/what-we-do/patterns We'll be spending the Easter season in the book of Acts. Everyone is on their healing journey that involves recovery from traumatic experiences or elements that may be related to how one deals with conflict. Cultural differences, gender biases, socio-economic factors, and family of origin – all play a role in developing our conflict resolution style. Conflict is a part of everyday living and necessary for growth. Conflict can be a source of adding new value and meaning to any relationship if handled healthily. . During the healing process, engaging with the pain (that a conflict may trigger) instead of avoiding it would be beneficial. Having a genuine conflict resolution style instead of compromise is essential to committed relationships and enhances the relationship's quality. Reconciliation is possible. However, the choice is ours to select a healthy and intentional path to resolve conflict. Discussing conflict is constructive and provides a positive opportunity for understanding and growth. In this episode of the WHoly Mom Chat, Jenny sits down with Dr. Jen Ripley to discuss conflict resolution in our relationships, especially marriage. They discuss the L.O.V.E. Method and why forgiveness is so important. Listen in as we talk to learn more about: Dr. Jen Ripley shares her journey and her background in psychology + counseling The L.O.V.E. Method Dr. Ripley shares practical tips for utilizing the LOVE MethodThe importance of the role of forgiveness and reconciliation in relationshipsWe are all on our own healing journey. We can be instruments of peace, joy, and support to each other while we process healing together. May we seek the help we need to choose restoration, reconciliation, and healing over violence, avoidance, brokenness, and living in survival mode. Jennifer Ripley, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Virginia and is a Professor at Regent University. She promotes healthy families in church communities around the world. Dr. Ripley also directs the Hope Project, a long-term clinical research study of the Hope approach to couple therapy, which has seen over 500 couples demonstrating clinical efficacy in various ways with student leadership. Her students learn the Hope approach to provide therapy to couples in the Psy.D. program's internal clinic and advanced students are selected to provide supervision. Ripley is an extrovert who thrives on relationships with students and colleagues. She also loves a good theology discussion, wrestling with some of the most challenging issues in Christian integration today, meditative prayer, and analyzing data.
