pWotD Episode 2598: Jerry West Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 499,944 views on Wednesday, 12 June 2024 our article of the day is Jerry West.Jerome Alan West (May 28, 1938 – June 12, 2024) was an American basketball executive and player. He played professionally for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His nicknames included "the Logo", in reference to his silhouette being the basis for the NBA logo; "Mr. Clutch", for his ability to make a big play in a key situation such as his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks; "Mr. Outside", in reference to his perimeter play with the Los Angeles Lakers and "Zeke from Cabin Creek" for the creek near his birthplace of Chelyan, West Virginia. West played the small forward position early in his career: he was a standout at East Bank High School and at West Virginia University, where he led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game. He earned the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player honor despite the loss in the championship. He then embarked on a 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers and was the co-captain of the 1960 U. S. Olympic gold medal team, a squad that was inducted as a unit into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2024, he will be inducted to the Hall of Fame as a contributor to the sport as an executive and consultant.West's NBA career was highly successful. Playing the guard position, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times and was chosen as the All-Star MVP in 1972, the same year that he won the only title of his career. West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. He was also a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams (one second, followed by four firsts), which were introduced when he was 32 years old. Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite being on the losing team (1969). In 1980, West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team. West was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996, and to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.After his playing career ended, West took over as head coach of the Lakers for three years. He led Los Angeles into the playoffs each year and earned a Western Conference finals berth once. Working as a player-scout for three years, West was named general manager of the Lakers before the 1982–83 NBA season. Under his reign, Los Angeles won six championship rings. In 2002, West became general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and helped the franchise win their first-ever playoff berths. For his contributions, West won the NBA Executive of the Year Award twice: once as a Lakers manager (1995) and then as a Grizzlies manager (2004). West's son, Jonnie, also played college basketball for West Virginia. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:57 UTC on Thursday, 13 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Jerry West on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Amy Neural.

MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night 2023 MLB All-Star Game – T-Mobile Park, Seattle National League 3, American League 2 National 3, American 2 – National League snaps All-Star Game losing streak, tops AL 3-2 behind Elias Díaz homer Elias Díaz hit a two-run homer off Félix Bautista in the eighth inning, and the National League snapped a nine-game losing streak in the All-Star Game with a 3-2 win over the American League. The NL won for the first time since an 8-0 victory in 2012 in Kansas City thanks to Díaz, a catcher who became the first Rockies player to win the All-Star MVP award. Díaz, who was non-tendered by the Pirates at the end of 2019, drove a 2-2 pitch from Baltimore’s hard-throwing closer deep to left to put the NL in front. Díaz was the lone representative for Colorado in his first All-Star Game appearance. Friday Chicago White Sox at Atlanta Braves, 7:20 p.m. Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs, 8:05 p.m. Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners, 10:10 p.m. MLB – Díaz becomes unlikely All-Star MVP, 3 ½ years after cut loose by Pirates Elias Díaz may be the most unlikely All-Star MVP. Just 3 1/2 years after Pittsburgh failed to offer a contract and allowed him to become a free agent, his go-ahead, two-run homer off Félix Bautista in the eighth inning lifted the National League over the American 3-2. A first-time All-Star at age 32, the Colorado catcher put his name on an award won by Willie Mays, Joe Morgan, Frank and Brooks Robinson, both Ken Griffeys and Mike Trout. Díaz says: “I honestly can’t believe that my name is going to be next to some of those names." MLB – White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. out of All-Star Game due to calf tightness Chicago White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. did not play in the All-Star Game after feeling tightness in his right calf during the Home Run Derby. The White Sox said that Robert underwent an MRI in Seattle and is listed as day-to-day. The team said Robert felt the tightness in the calf during the opening round and did not play in the All-Star Game as a precaution. Robert will be evaluated before the White Sox restart the season on Friday in Atlanta. Robert was the No. 1 seed in the Home Run Derby and beat Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman 28-27 in the opening round. Robert lost to Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena in the semifinals 35-22. MLB – Atlanta’s Truist Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field under consideration for ASG The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs are under consideration for upcoming All-Star Games. Next year’s game is scheduled for the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field in Arlington, and the 2026 game will be at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. The 2021 All-Star Game was awarded to Atlanta’s Truist Park by Major League Baseball in 2019 but in April 2021 was moved to Denver’s Coors Field following objections to sweeping changes to Georgia’s voting laws. Commissioner Rob Manfred says “Atlanta is in the mix of clubs for the ‘25 All-Star Game.” MLB – Manfred has no intention of altering Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has no intention of altering Pete Rose’s lifetime ban from baseball and said the sport’s commercial deals with gambling companies have no impact on the status of the career hits leader. Rose agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation found Rose placed numerous bets on the Cincinnati Reds to win from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. Manfred rejected Rose’s application in 2015. Manfred says: “Pete Rose violated what is sort of rule one in baseball, and the consequences of that are clear in the rule.” MLB – MLB open to consider increasing time on pitch clock in postseason Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will consider increasing time on the pitch clock for the postseason but is reluctant to adjust an innovation the sport considers a great success. In the first season of the clock, the average time of a nine-inning game is 2:38, on track to be the fastest since 1984. It is down from 3:04 last year and 3:09 in 2021, the last season before PitchCom was introduced. Manfred says "we’re going to continue to talk to the players and adds: “I think you ought to play the postseason the way you play the regular season. There’s exceptions.” NBASL – NBA Summer League Last Night Chicago Bulls 107, Sacramento Kings 99 Tonight Detroit Pistons vs. Toronto Raptors, 6:00 p.m.              (at Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas) Indiana Pacers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder, 7:30 p.m.        (at Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas) NBA – Flopping, challenge rules changed by NBA’s Board of Governors The NBA’s Board of Governors approved two rule changes for the coming season Tuesday. One change gives coaches a second challenge if their first one is successful. The other will mean a technical foul will be called against players who flop. The challenge rule change is something that coaches have wanted for some time. Coaches who challenge a call and are successful will get the chance to make a second challenge. Teams must have a timeout in order to call for a challenge; that timeout would not be retained even if a coach won that first challenge. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Today New York Liberty at Indiana Fever, 12:00 p.m. Connecticut Sun at Chicago Sky, 12:00 p.m. WNBA – WNBA All-Star skills competition now features teammates partnering up The WNBA is changing its All-Star skills challenge with the new format pitting four sets of teammates against each other in a head-to-head competition. The league announced the two-round competition on Tuesday that will include a timed obstacle course relay competition that showcases players’ agility, dribbling, passing and shooting skills. The four teams are Atlanta’s Allisha Gray and Cheyenne Parker, who are both making their All-Star debuts; Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale and Satou Sabally; New York’s Sabrina Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot; and Las Vegas’ Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum. NCAAFB – Northwestern retains assistants after firing coach Pat Fitzgerald Northwestern has decided to retain its assistant coaches and support staff for the 2023 season after it fired head coach Pat Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal. Athletic director Derrick Gragg informed the coaches and staff of the decision during a meeting. There was no announcement by the school when it comes to the leadership of the program after Fitzgerald’s dismissal. The first game of the season is Sept. 3 at Rutgers. The 48-year-old Fitzgerald was fired on Monday by Northwestern President Michael Schill. Tennis – Elina Svitolina has the Ukraine war and her baby in mind as she beats Iga Swiatek Elina Svitolina is back in her first Grand Slam semifinal since 2019. She got there at Wimbledon by beating No. 1 Iga Swiatek in three sets Tuesday. Things are much different for Svitolina now than they were the last time she made it to the final four at a major tournament. She is a mother who gave birth to a daughter nine months ago and returned to the tour three months ago. And she is concerned about the war in her native Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022. Svitolina will face Marketa Vondrousova for a berth in Saturday’s final. Novak Djokovic will play Jannik Sinner in the men’s semifinals. Golf – Saudi investment in PGA Tour will top $1 billion. And Norman will exit as CEO A PGA Tour executive has told Congress that Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund agreed to invest more than $1 billion in a new commercial entity controlled by the tour. Ron Price, the tour’s chief operating officer, also said at a hearing Tuesday that Greg Norman will be ousted as the CEO of LIV Golf if the business deal between the Saudis and the tour is finalized. The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is looking into the negotiations between the tour and the Saudis and the geopolitical implications of Saudi investment in American sports. However, there was no indication that Congress would block the tour from going into business with the Saudi Public Investment Fund. Learn what it's like to ride bulls for a living, as Dakota Louis stops by ahead of the PBR event in Duluth. A Duluth High School student is facing criminal charges after they used a knife to cut a classmate during a fight shortly before classes began last Thursday, according to the school's principal. Duluth Principal Eric Davidson told parents in a letter on social media that the students got into a fight outside the cafeteria shortly before first period. One of the students pulled out a knife during the fight and inflicted what Davidson called a "superficial wound" on the other student. Duluth's school resource officers and several administrators were nearby when the incident occurred and quickly worked to the break the fight up, according to the principal. Both students are expected to face disciplinary consequences for fighting, but the student who was carrying the knife is also expected to face criminal charges since they were carrying a weapon on campus. In a follow up message to parents, Davidson said, all students involved in the incident, even those students who were only marginally involved, were suspended. The fight is the latest incident involving a weapon at a Gwinnett County school year, however. In October, a Grayson High School student was cut with a box cutter during a fight in a school bathroom, days after a Norcross High School student died after he was shot near campus during school hours. Around the same time, a Shiloh High School was arrested after he fire a gun on campus shortly after classes dismissed for the day. Critics of a new discipline policy that was put in place for Gwinnett County Public Schools last summer have pointed to the incidents, as well as others including increased numbers of fights, saying they are evidence that the district's new discipline approach is not working. In November, Gwinnett County Public Schools officials said the number of incidents involving guns between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 had more than doubled compared to the same time period during the 2021 2022 school year, going from two incidents to five incidents. The number of incidents involving a blade or a razor had also increased, going from seven between August and October 2021 to 11 incidents between August and October of 2022. Collins Hill legend Maya Moore officially retired from the WNBA on Monday, making the announcement on "Good Morning America." Moore hasn't played in the WNBA since 2018, when she announced plans to commit time to criminal justice reform. Moore entered the WNBA in 2011 as the No. 1 pick of the Minnesota Lynx on the heels of leading UConn to the national title. She captured the Rookie of the Year award and the first of four WNBA titles (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). Minnesota appeared in the playoffs eight consecutive seasons with Moore on the roster. An All-WNBA pick five consecutive seasons, Moore was league MVP in 2014 and a six-time All-Star with three All-Star MVP awards. At the high school level, Moore led Collins Hill to state championships her final three seasons and a national championship as a senior. As part of her commitment to criminal justice reform, Moore lobbied for the release of Jonathan Irons from the Jefferson City correctional center in Missouri. After 23 1/2 years behind bars, Irons was vindicated of a conviction for murder and burglary that happened when he was 16 years old. A judge set Irons free, citing a fingerprint report that would've proved Irons' innocence but was not turned over to his defense team. Moore and Irons are now married with a child, and have co-authored a book "Love and Justice." When Gwinnettians lined up to either participate in, or watch, the county's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Lawrenceville on Monday, it was the first time they've been able to do so since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The parade, which is staged by the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County, had the theme of “Why We Can't Wait.” The parade was not held in 2021 because of the pandemic. Meanwhile, last year's parade was cancelled partially because of a surge in COVID cases, but also because King's family had asked communities to use the day to focus on getting voting rights legislation passed by Congress instead of holding parades. The parade and celebration were not be the only way Gwinnettians honored King's legacy on Monday, however. Multiple local groups held service projects, such as Volunteer Gwinnett and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Kahmare Holmes had 19 points and five rebounds Monday in the Archer boys basketball team's 50-48 win over Buckhorn Alabama in the MLK National Showcase. The Tigers, seventh in Class 7A, also got contributions from Darrian Joseph (five points, three rebounds, two assists), Elijah Davis (five points), Bryce Kennedy (three points, two rebounds), Dominick Wright (three points, six rebounds, three steals) and Courtland Walker (six points, three rebounds, three assists). Class 7A Number 1 Norcross held Thompson Alabama to 17 second-half points in a 66-51 victory Monday in the MLK National Showcase. Lamariyon Jordan scored 23 for the Blue Devils, and Samarion Bond scored 16. And Greater Atlanta Christian fell 65-49 to Drew Charter, Number 8 in Double A, in Monday's Dream Challenge. Jonathan Waters led the Spartans with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kaosi Chijioke added nine points, six rebounds and two assists. GAC's other contributors included Nick Teague (five points, nine rebounds), Amare Williams (seven points, five assists, three rebounds) and Noah Harry (seven points, four rebounds). A man was shot by a Snellville police officer early Monday morning at a local gas station after police said the department "received multiple calls of a man brandishing a firearm." Police said an officer located the suspected vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. at the Speedway gas station located at Stone Mountain Highway and Highpoint Road. Snellville police said said the suspect was taken to a local hospital and was being treated. His condition was not immediately known. The department also said the officer "sustained a minor injury during the event" and was also treated at a hospital. According to police, a gun was located at the scene. Snellville police said the GBI has been called to investigate the incident, which is standard procedure in police involved shootings. One of them leads the company that has the naming rights to the Gas South District and has been involved in the county because of that. On today's show, I was joined by author and motivational speaker, Jeff Griffin. His story is motivating, inspiring and moving. He talks a lot about the three D's which are dream, desire and do. You will love this episode and it will give you such perspective. More about Jeff: His mother named him Jeffrey, but his friends call him Griff. He is currently in a wheelchair, but not forever! Jeff always dreamed of playing sports on the ‘big stage'!  As a kid he envisioned playing college football as a receiver. He was one step closer to fulfilling his dream when a construction accident left him broken and paralyzed from the waist down. His life and dreams were shattered but not defeated. During those dark days he had a decision to make: he could stay down and quit or get back up and succeed. He chose the latter. As an ordinary man living life from a wheelchair, Jeff has accomplished some extraordinary things. He played in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, and is a silver medalist for the USA men's wheelchair basketball team. Griff is a national champion who played for the Utah Wheelin' Jazz and is a four-time All-Star MVP. He was the number one men's wheelchair tennis player in the state of Utah, won the St. George Marathon, has two Guinness Book of World Records, and is the author of the award-winning book I'Mpossible: Desire. Dream. Do. He believes everyone has the power and potential to accomplish the impossible if they take the proper steps. During his 16-year career, Griffin's teaching style, humor, and personality have made him one of the most liked and sought-after teachers. He earned his master's degree in education and curriculum and created a worldwide peer-to-peer leadership program for Third-World countries that was recognized at the United Nations in New York City. Griff considers publishing his book one of his greatest accomplishments since he got a D- in English and was told he would never be able to write a coherent sentence. Griff started two successful businesses and created a nonprofit organization called the ‘Road to Recovery', which impacts thousands of injured vets and physically disabled persons. He is passionate about progress, enjoys mentoring youth, distributing wheelchairs to those in need, and giving hope through his humanitarian efforts. Griff married his best friend Emily and together they have four beautiful children. He enjoys eating pizza, playing games, and exercising. These successes, although impressive, do not define who Griff is. What really defines him is his ability to amplify your power and potential, as a Sherpa of sorts, by not only telling you how to turn the impossible into the possible, but by showing you – ONE STEP AT A TIME.   https://griffinmotivation.com/   Get a Free Consultation – https://keynutrition.com/free-evaluation/   Free Community Circle -> https://calendly.com/michelleraines/breathe Podcast Q&A Submissions –> https://bit.ly/3c74i7A   Cured Nutrition Discount code: Brad Order from Cured Nutrition -> https://bit.ly/3z0mkBv   Discount code: keynutrition for 20% off your first Legion order.
