Welcome back to the Cape Fear Rundown. This week, we talk to Kelly about the Warming Shelter and what it is, and then Ben has updates for us in the TRU Colors double-homicide case we didn't touch on last week.
The North Carolina grand jury indictment process is shrouded in absolute secrecy — or, almost absolute secrecy, because in one very rare case, we have a glimpse inside that Black Box. What defense attorneys found inside is disturbing, but the system is rigged against addressing the problem.
So many questions! Welcome back to the Cape Fear Rundown. This week, Kelly explains to us how eviction actually works, and then Ben gives us the latest on the Tru Colors double-homicide case and talks legal technicalities.
Welcome back! This week, we talk to Ben Schachtman about his latest piece on Tru Colors, Rachel Keith explains what her newest big story has been like in terms of reporting, and finally, Kelly has been in a dumpster. She tells us about it. Stick around!
On this episode, we get into George Taylor's allegations that media coverage effectively killed Tru Colors, the for-profit brewery he founded with a social mission to help curb street violence. Plus, a word of warning about scammers during the holiday season (and, really, any season). And, Michael Praats has some personal news.
This week Adam and Steve are joined by returning friend of the show Jon Dispenza. Jon shares his experiences working at the recently closed Tru Colors brewery. The brewery hired active and former gang members as a way to give them alternative options not available to them. We talk about the good that came from the brewery and some of the struggles leading to its downfall. Then we have a bit fun playing a game of Totally Not Pardon The Interruption's Word and learn about Pittsburgh Potty lore. On this episode of The Adrenaline Zone, hosts James “Sandy” Winnefeld and Sandra Magnus are joined by gang member “Blanco”, one of the leaders of an innovative project to reduce inner city gun violence in Wilmington, NC. Blanco grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, in a neighborhood that didn't offer much in the way of economic opportunity. Like many of his peers, Blanco saw gang initiation as the most viable path towards community, safety, and opportunity. He became involved with a gang by the time he was a teenager. One day, out of the blue, Blanco got a phone call from a man looking to start a brewery. He wanted to employ Blanco, as well as several members of rival gangs. The risks running through Blanco's mind were numerous. Could this be a police setup? Was he going to be arrested? Even if this was legitimate, was it really safe to work side by side with members of rival organizations? Despite the obvious risk, Blanco accepted the offer. Through his work at TRU Colors, Blanco is opening new opportunities for success for future generations—giving them a better chance for success than was previously possible in disenfranchised communities. TRU Colors Brewing is on a mission to end gang violence When a shooting took the life of a young man in Wilmington, NC local businessman George Taylor wanted to do something about it. You likely know some of Taylor's other businesses, like Untappd or National Speed. Rather than just talking about making a change, Taylor contacted the local gang task force and spent two years getting to know gang members and the challenges they faced. After careful consideration and identifying some of the roots causes of gang violence he founded TRU Colors Brewing. TRU Colors has a mission to end gang violence. Not only by providing jobs but by offering support and education on how to know your self worth. Fitness and nutrition classes, yoga, counseling, and discounted meals are some of offerings at the brewery. 80% of the breweries employee's are rival gang members. Spree is the Assistant Director of Marketing at TRU Colors, and an active gang member. He was serving time in federal prison when he first heard about the brewery and their mission. With some skepticism, he contacted them to see what they were about. Spree shares how TRU Colors has made a difference in his life, the challenges faced living in "the hood," the appeal of joining a gang, and how he's taking what he's learned back to his community. Kevin was working at a local brewery when he heard about the mission of TRU Colors. He was impressed with their goal and reached out to them to join the brewing team. Kevin shares with us why he joined TRU Colors, some info on TRU Light (their flagship beer), and what's coming in the future from the brewery. TRU Light is an approachable beer to bring people together Deciding on what style to launch with wasn't a tough call. The humble light lager is an easily approachable beer. Us beer nerds may think our numbers are strong but there's no question the light lager captures way more people than any IPA or pastry stout. Kevin tells us the brewery isn't even really about the beer, it's just a vehicle to fund the mission. That said, they do have some fun collaborations in planning and we're told some hops will come into the mix. George Taylor built a career as a serial tech entrepreneur, launching, growing and exiting from nine different companies. Five years ago, after settling in Wilmington, North Carolina, George was working at his latest tech startup, when a nearby gang-related drive-by shooting shook him to his core. George was "pissed off" that such violence existed in this idyllic seaside town and he vowed to do something to help. After meeting with the region's top gang leaders to understand the issues that drive street gangs, he launched TRU Colors, a brewery with a mission to end the cycle of gang violence in America's neighborhoods by breaking down barriers and creating new economic opportunities. TRU Colors hires active gang members, pays them a livable wage, and shows them that they have options and opportunities to be successful. We hope George's story inspires you as much as it has inspired us. To learn more about TRU Colors, visit the organization's website at www.trucolors.co

Paul Verdu is the vice president and head of Tenth and Blake, which is the craft focused arm of its parent company, Molson Coors. Under this umbrella, Coors, then later MillerCoors, and now MolsonCoors, have each sought to launch, develop, and promote flavorful beers. Its portfolio has shifted over the years, once including Blue Moon until it outgrew the group and moved onto the bigger leagues. It has also been an active buyer of craft brands. As it stands today, Tenth and Blake includes the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, Saint Archer, Terrapin, Hop Valley, Revolver, AC Golden, as well as relative newcomers Atwater and TRU Colors. It also houses a host of imported brands, including the much beloved Pilsner Urquell. We talk a lot about craft beer on this podcast but we rarely delve into the world of big beer. Today we're fortunate to speak with Paul Verdu, whose career in the beer business has taken him around the world and offered him a rare view of both the craft and big beer spheres. He's long worked in the CPG space, originally selling bug killers and air fresheners before moving on to work for Miller. We go through his background and what got him into the beer industry, the pains of the failed launch of Saint Archer's Gold in the face of a pandemic, and Tenth and Blake's intriguing investment into a brewery that employs active gang members in an attempt to quell gang violence. We also talk about my favorite subject, pilsner, discussing the future of Pilsner Urquell in the US, and why Barmen Pils is secretly one of the best lagers in the states. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Originally released on October 25, 2020, Episode 7 shares the story of TRU Colors Brewery in Wilmington, NC, a business co-founded by the leaders of rival gangs in the area with the help of a serial entrepreneur named George Taylor. The rules of TRU Colors are pretty straight forward, Make a liveable wage for your job, do your work at a very high level, and use your influence as a gang leader to stop gun violence in your organization. To make that work, Tru Colors has built a special culture, and the storyteller in this episode is the architect of that culture, Khalilah Olokunola, or as she is known at TRU Colors, “KO”.This story shows us that, when basic needs are met, and a supportive culture has been built, even society's most stereotyped members can thrive in the workplace. That is the 7th thing you should know about stakeholder capitalism.Keem Grady produced a mini documentary telling this story and you can see that here. This story also has great lessons for the impact investing community. If all goes well this Spring, beer will be rolling off the TRU Colors line come April 1 and you'll be able to find it in a store near you shortly thereafter. To say in the loop, consider subscribing to the TRU Colors mailing list here (scroll all the way down). If you liked the music in this episode you can find more at:RuslanChris ValentineEmily Brimlow
Back when we first started making Out to Lunch in New Orleans, one of our earliest guests was a young woman by the name of Amy Chenevert. Amy had gone to a football game and realized that all the guys were wearing fan fashion, but there was nothing fashionable for women to wear on game day. So Amy started up a company that made gameday apparel for women sports fans. That was back in 2007. During the 2019 football season, a new piece of women's sports apparel started popping up. If you don't have one yourself, you've probably seen someone wearing it. It's a sparkly, sequined sports jacket, in appropriate Saints, Tigers, and other team colors. That sparkly jacket marked Amy Chenevert's return to sports fashion. After taking some time away from her business, Amy is back at the head of her company, Tru Colors Gameday. The company makes fashion items specifically for women to wear and take to the game on game day, centered on a very specific NFL women's fashion accessory, the clear bag. Game Day Every Day the New Orleans Saints, the LSU Tigers, and every other successful sports team know how to go out on the field and win. Everybody knows their position. Everybody knows the rules. Everybody on the team knows exactly what to do. But they still have a coach. You can't even imagine a football team without a coach. When an organization with a lot of moving parts is dependent on communication and on-the-fly decision making, it makes sense to have someone who can stand back and see the big picture. Which is why businesses have coaches too. Like Julie Couret. The companies Julie coaches are an impressive list that include GE, the Marriot, Sheraton, Entergy, Ochsner Health System, and many others. Recently the question for a lot of businesses has gone from, “When will things get back to normal?” to “How do we survive if things never go back to normal?” Julie imparts a great deal of wisdom for businesses coping with Covid in this conversation.
