As you will know if you've listened to previous episodes, this podcast is really about the central question of the kind of education (formal and informal) that we need to support and enable us all, but most importantly our young people, to transition effectively through this historical period of massive flux and change. There are many people around the world putting language to these shifts and offering guidance to leaders, and organisations for how to navigate them. But few are doing this as prominently and at such a scale as my guest this week. Otto Scharmer's substantial work with MIT, Theory U and the Presencing Institute for the last few decades has been helping leaders embrace cross-sector systems transformation. To quote his 2007 book on Theory U, his work opens up pathways for "dealing with the resistance of thought, emotion, and will; and intentionally reintegrating the intelligence of the head, the heart, and the hand" in the context of leadership, decision-making, and almost any kind of collaborative work.Otto Scharmer, a Senior Lecturer at MIT and Founding Chair of the Presencing Institute, has dedicated the past 20 years to helping leaders embrace cross-sector systems transformation. Through his bestselling books Theory U and Presence (the latter co-authored with Peter Senge and others), Otto introduced the groundbreaking concept of "presencing" — learning from the emerging future. He also co-authored Leading from the Emerging Future, which outlines eight acupuncture points for transforming our economy from egocentric to ecocentric. His most recent book The Essentials of Theory U (2018) summarizes the core principles and applications of awareness-based systems change. He co-founded the MITx u-lab, which has activated a vibrant worldwide ecosystem of transformational change involving more than 250,000 users from 186 countries. In collaboration with colleagues, he co-created global Action Learning Labs for UN agencies and SDG Leadership Labs for UN Country Teams in 26 countries, which support cross-sector initiatives for addressing urgent humanitarian crises. Born and raised near Hamburg, Germany, Otto's early experiences on his family farm profoundly shaped his vision. From his father, a pioneer of regenerative farming, Otto learned the significance of the living quality of the soil in organic agriculture, which inspired his thinking about social fields as the grounding condition from which visible transformations emerge. Like a good farmer who cares for the soil, Otto believes responsible leaders must nurture the social field in which they operate. He emphasizes that shifting our economic operating systems from extractive to regenerative requires innovations in leadership support structures for shifting mindsets from ego to eco. Building that infrastructure is the purpose of the u-school for Transformation. Otto earned his diploma and his PhD in economics from Witten/Herdecke University in Germany. He is a member of the UN Learning Advisory Council for the 2030 Agenda, the Club of Rome and the World Future Council. He has won the Jamieson Prize for Teaching Excellence at MIT and the European Leonardo Corporate Learning Award. In 2021, he received the Elevating Humanity Award from the Organizational Development Network. Sam Hinds (website, substack) therapist, PhD and lecturer at California Center for Integral Studies, has been on before EP173. We dive into the depths of what some call collective precensing. We speak of faith and trust. We speak of the impatience we feel, the importance of slowing down, of staying with it. We speak of responsibility, relevance, circular time and much else. The practices Sam wrote his dissertation on as practices to reconnect with life, inviting the many to agency and as a practice of attuning to vitality, within and around us. If you are curious about collective practice in some form. This is a must listen. Other resources we mention: Episode with Ria Baeck, Debold & Steininger, Sam's other Podcast with Rosa Lewis. Have you ever wondered if there's more to cancer treatment than just chemotherapy and radiation? In this Longevity Podcast episode, I talk with Dr. Nasha Winters to discuss the often-overlooked mental and emotional aspects of healing from cancer. Dr. Winters, a stage 4 ovarian cancer survivor of over 30 years, shares her incredible journey and the unconventional approach that transformed her health and career. We discuss the concept of "10 drops in the bucket" - factors that contribute to cancer development and overall health, including genetics, metabolism, toxins, microbiome, immune system, inflammation, circulation, hormones, circadian rhythm, and stress. We also dive into an integrative approach, combining the best of conventional and alternative treatments, tailored to each individual's needs, the concept of metronomic chemotherapy - using lower doses more frequently, potentially reducing side effects while maintaining efficacy, psychedelic therapy (mushrooms), and much more. Dr. Nasha Winters is an integrative oncology specialist, author of "The Metabolic Approach to Cancer” and “Mistletoe and the Emerging Future of Integrative Oncology,” host of the Metabolic Matters podcast, and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization, the Metabolic Terrain Institute of Health (MTIH).

How can we think about the future today - and learn from it? How is the war influencing our thinking and action? Why are societies polarized, and can we overcome this polarization? Cassie RobinsonAssociate Director of Emerging Future at Joseph Rowntree Foundation“There's always something growing and declining at the same time. I am ending and beginning at the same time.”From external events such as the pandemic to the hyper speed development of AI and tech to the increasingly urgent climate crisis discourses, how do we navigate ourselves in the midst of all these life-changing events? Are all changes – particularly the ones that liken to the ending of a cycle – inevitably bad? How can we adapt accordingly and create pathways to what's to come?Using an array of frameworks, Associate Director of Emerging Futures and founder of Stewarding Loss, Cassie Robinson is of the belief that endings can be done better.“The systemic transition is considering it as making good compost – composting improves soil, it provides nutrients, it stimulates the ecosystem, it builds up.”Robinson's frameworks aimed at the UK public sector and organisations like the NHS. But during the Q&A aspects relating to private companies also surface..The idea of hospicing endings might seem alien or unnecessary in profit-driven systems. But these rituals are natural part of our culture - from the personal to the organizational to the societal – and here Robinson expands on the work of e.g. Vanessa Reid.

Ksenia Benifand and Dawna Jones talk about how to design for a better future with less waste and more opportunity. The conversation connects Ksenia's work with diverse stakeholders to gain deeper insights about user & ecosystem needs, pinpoint strategic interventions, co-design solutions, and facilitate iterative prototyping, in order to bring a collective vision to tangible on-the-ground projects. Keywords: circular economy, design change, pandemics, archetypes of emerging future and opportunities that go with it.Ksenia Benifand has spent her life and professional career navigating liminality - the transitory, in-between state, characterized by ambiguity, messiness, and hybridity. She has been exploring the "edges of change" to gain deeper insights into the drivers of socio-cultural, political, environmental and technological changes and developments. By exploring and experimenting with different narratives, lifestyles and practices, she has gained a unique perspective. Not afraid to test her ideas, she spent over a year living zero-waste and actively participating in and building the sharing economy as part of her research and solution design for transitioning consumer behaviours towards Circular Economy business models. She plays in various contexts to study how human needs, limitations, and capabilities adapt to new and unexplored environments while building community resilience. “We are stronger than we realize. We have the immense capacity for resilience -- to rise up and recreate the world we know is possible.” When Antoinette Klatzky took a part-time job as a recent college graduate in a retail clothing store, she might not have imagined one day working with the iconic fashion designer, Eileen Fisher, to help set strategy for Fisher’s foundation on human rights and climate justice for the next 10 years -- operating at the intersection of transforming business, environmental stewardship, and women’s empowerment. Nor might she have envisioned that her work with Fisher would lead her to help prepare leaders and changemakers around the globe for broader awareness-based systems change. But that’s what Klatzky has done. As the co-creator and Executive Director of the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute, she facilitates empowerment workshops for young women – having previously initiated a recycled clothing program to fund those workshops and helped diversify the company’s supply chain for social justice and equity. And as a co-creator in the Presencing Institute, led by Otto Scharmer of MIT, she co-anchors a worldwide community of nearly 13,000 participants engaging in shared inquiry: how can we be of transformational service in our modern moment of intersecting crises? The daughter of a consciously single parent, Klatzky comes from a strong line of independent women. Her mother, after leaving a secure academic tenured career, gave birth to her at the age of 40 as a single parent by choice. Her grandmother, who gave birth to her mother at the age of 40, was the daughter of a Russian Jewish seamstress who fled the pogroms of Czarist Russia. “It’s this lineage of strong women that carried me into this life and to the journey that I have been on,” Klatzky reflects. Her father’s Indian heritage was a doorway of discovery for universal roots, blending community and family, and deepening into spiritual and embodiment practices like yoga, of which she is a certified teacher. The paradoxical sense of both belonging and difference that she experienced in her childhood within the Jewish community led her to an International Honors Program in college, where she traveled across countries, experienced different cultures, and re-imagined globalization. Upon graduating, she returned to her childhood stomping grounds at the YWCA where she was previously a lifeguard competitive swimming coach – this time to step in as a social justice coordinator, while also taking a part-time job in retail clothing. This would foreshadow the next stage of her life. As it turned out, Eileen Fisher was looking to establish an institute to teach the company’s leadership practices to a new generation of young women and teenage girls. Klatzky seemed the ideal fit. The company’s leadership practices were heavily influenced by Otto Scharmer’s work at MIT, taking Klatzky deep into the principles of Theory U, a paradigm for awareness-based systems change and organizational transformation that emphasizes deep listening, and radically sensing and “presencing” an emerging future. She was so drawn to these principles that she studied and trained with Scharmer’s Presencing Institute, and later joined its board. A moment that occurred during a Master Class in Germany captures Klatzky’s depth of spirit: in a circle discussing the aftermath of the Holocaust, she spontaneously and melodiously sang a Hebrew prayer. Much of the room was brought to tears. Out of Klatzky's explorations, the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute was born. Beyond simply imparting useful skills, the program distinctively helps young women embark on a leadership journey of self-discovery -- and the authenticity that comes with embodiment. Today, Klatzky divides her time at work between the Leadership Institute and Women Together, an initiative of the Eileen Fisher Foundation that supports women in being the change they wish to see in the world. She also co-anchors the GAIA Journey (Global Activation of Intention and Action), a 14-week online course that she co-developed for the Presencing Institute aimed at profound civilizational renewal. Within the span of 12 days in response to the Covid pandemic, GAIA grew from a small group of friends discussing an idea to 13,000 virtual journeys supported by insights from neuroscientists, indigenous wisdom keepers, psychotherapists, biologists, artists, poets, and academic researchers. Klatzky is still processing all that has transpired. What keeps her grounded? She lives just north of New York City on Lenape land, and loves her time in the garden, connected to the land. What she calls “home” is her regular yoga and meditation practice. “When I can really come back to myself and be centered in who I am, that is home for me.” Join us in conversation with this strong feminine voice of the emerging future!

When money is remembered as energy, we begin to relate to it with reverence, with choice. Joshua Ackman is the former Head of Co-Investment at River Capital and is an “impact” investor I admire for his intentionality and somewhat Tantric relationship to capital - a man who is known for speaking the words love, spirit and money all in the one sentence. In our conversation, we explore what an integrated approach to investing that includes the ‘irrational,’ emotional, and relational might look like. We also explore what opens up to us when we see money as energy flow, the fact that we are all ‘investors,’ and how aligning our values and our decisions might support the weaving of the world our hearts know is possible. Whether you consider yourself an investor or not just yet, we all are and this episode will support you in stepping into your investor of time, energy and money in a meaningful, values-aligned way! --Show-notes and links hereConnect with me on InstagramConnect with me on FacebookMusic by RhoneSupport the show (https://aljeffery.com/podcast/)

Please join us for a conversation with some of the most innovative voices in American higher education. How might we use this crisis and disruption in university life as an opportunity to re-imagine and transform our systems of higher education and knowledge diffusion? How might we better prepare students and communities to navigate a world of ever-increasing complexity and planetary distress with wisdom, skill, mindfulness, well-being, and creativity? With so many universities re-thinking their educational models in these unique times, is there an opportunity for offering new models of world-class, cost-effective learning to support deeper wisdom, innovation and conscious transformation? Some of the leading voices involved in transforming higher education will be in conversation about the unique challenges and opportunities of these times. The ecosystem has reached millions, attracted thousands of volunteers, and mushroomed into numerous community-based service projects as well as inspiring content portals. ServiceSpace harnesses the collective power of networks and our deeper interconnectedness to create a distributed social movement founded on small, local individual acts of kindness, generosity and service that ignite shifts in individual and collective consciousness. Nipun was honored as an "unsung hero of compassion" by the Dalai Lama, not long before former U.S. President Obama appointed him to a council for addressing poverty and inequality in the US. Yet the core of what strikes anyone who meets him is the way his life is an attempt to bring smiles in the world and silence in his heart: “I want to live simply, love purely, and give fearlessly. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast This episode continues co-host David Bilbrey's exploration of regenerative business and permaculture as he sits down with Kevin Jones to talk about Gather Lab, Transform 19, and the need to create something more than a conference, but rather events that include action. In the case of Transform 19 those are modeled in the form of various labs where participants come together to assist organizations and businesses ready to launch, expand, or go to scale. Kevin and David also talk about Impact Investing, which focuses on mission oriented investing so we can think like a philanthropist while acting like an investor. Donate online to the Spring Fundraiser As Transform 19 is still a conference at the core with these labs as a central component, Kevin also shares some of the speakers and other offerings at the event. You'll hear about a number of people and projects you may want to explore further and connect with from all over the globe. You can find more about Kevin's work with Gather Lab at GatherLab.net and Transform: Climate, Communities, and Capital, which runs from May 22 - 24, 2019, in San Francisco, California, at TheTransformSeries.net ----- Though Kevin gives us quite a bit regarding the various ways he and others focus on business development, impact investing, and what to expect from Transform 19, what I think about from this and my own experience is that burst of energy we have—the anticipation and excitement—leading up to an event, the fall off afterward, and what we can do to keep the momentum and possibility for change going once we're no longer together. Kevin uses a lot of technology to accomplish this goal, through conference calls, Slack instances and custom software. For those of us not plugged into those resources I think of Facebook events and Meetup groups, or even just posting meeting details to an Instagram account or Twitter, to bring us and keep us together. To me, however, the most important part is ongoing face-to-face time together, where we consistently show up. As we have our meetings and conversations after an event, we need to continue learning the stories of those around us, whether a personal anecdote or, like Kevin and his folks are doing with Transform, the stories of successful professionals; the people who did the work, overcame the struggles, and found a way forward. Can we, as Kevin himself mentioned at the beginning of the interview, openly talk about the fact we failed? To share that the journey along the way is more than just our successes and we have other lessons to learn through failure, such as the temperament Kevin's wife brings to their businesses that balances his thoughts and energy. The further I dig into my own focus with permaculture, social permaculture and community development, the more importance I place on getting to know one another, through silly stories like the origins of a nickname; to conversations about what breaks our heart; how we fell in love with a piece of land; or discovered the calling and created a business that changed our lives. We all have stories of success and failures. Those stories matter. What do we have to do to get right with that relationship? In the last interview of the year, co-host David Bilbrey sits down with Joel Solomon to examine those questions and talk about how we can change the dominant economic system. To cover all of that requires a wide-ranging discussion that includes wealth, politics, the commons, consciousness, care for those around us, and much more. Here we continue the second part of a wide ranging interview with futurist Benjamin J. Butler. Before the interview this most unusual futurist, one who has a rather more holistic view of the 'future' prediction paradigm, suggested we go for a dip in the chilly River Dart to better prepare ourselves. Having walked with him in the ancient forests of Devon to get there I can say that it did impact the quality of our conversation. Talking heads is an expression we come across often now. It means solely cerebral communication to many. But Benjamin prepared the interviewer better and I must say that we did have a more meaningful dialogue that the walk and the river ablution surely helped prepare us for. In part two Benjamin spends more time discussing the spiritual aspects of futurism, i.e. human consciousness itself. Follow his work here.
Meet futurist Benjamin J. Butler for the first part of a discussion on where we could be headed. Educated at King's College in London he is the founder of the Emerging Future Institute's grounbreaking approach to the tricky field of future prediction. Having a solid background in Korean zen practice Benjamin encompasses far more than a data-based analysis of trends His eclectic understanding rather eschews a holistic approach that takes into account consciousness itself and how an evolving human understanding of its reality has begun to sense its own role in the creation of the future. He has addressed corporations, world leaders and successfully predicted events that are only now in the news..like Brexit and the re-unification of the Koreas. His full bio can be seen here:

One of the great benefits I have had through volunteering for the Scrum Alliance has been the opportunity to work with a long list of inspiring and brilliant people. At the top of that list is Jukka Lindstrom. Jukka is someone who’s approach to exploring and solving problems is so different from my own that I felt like every time we collaborated on something, I got better at what I was doing just by working with him. A few years ago Jukka left his job as an Agile Coach and Trainer and started working full time with traditional organizations. At the start of 2016 he joined Cargotec to head up their Digital Transformation effort. If you think Agile Transition is hard, consider that it is only a small part of the transformation of digitizing a global organization with 11,000 people who are used to working in an analog world. In the first part of the interview Jukka and I talk about the work he’s been doing since leaving Reaktor and what it’s like trying to transform a company of 11,000 people to not just Agile, but a digitized way of working as well. Leaving the Agile Consulting world to go back into a traditional environment is a brave choice, but for Jukka, it presented an opportunity to test out what he had learned and see if he could help. While it has provided him with great learning experiences, it has also come with some tough moments. In the second part of the interview we focus on how what that career transition has been like and how he has avoided getting trapped in the doldrums when he is faced with working in a more traditional environment. Show Notes 00:09 Interview Begins 00:57 Jukka’s role at Cargotec and what the company does 02:37 The difference between Agile Transformation and Digital Transformation 07:36 The complexity of transformation at Cargotec 08:44 Why is this level of transformation so much harder than basic Agile transformation 10:10 The mindset shift 11:54 Placing a bet on technology when you don’t know exactly what you’ll be able to do with the result yet 13:00 transforming11,000 people … “that’s like 1,200-1,500 teams of people” 15:00 Where do you learn faster?
