The findings show these women deliberately adapt their daily operations to absorb violent shocks, relying heavily on deep community trust rather than formal state support. JMPD Tactical Response Unit officers have arrested a man in Lenasia South, Johannesburg in connection with recent gang violence in Westbury. The suspect is allegedly linked to a shooting that left four people dead over the weekend. JMPD Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla elaborates.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says gang-related gun violence in Westbury is severely disrupting teaching and learning. Five young people were reportedly shot on Monday, with three killed and two critically injured. One of those shot is a learner from R.W. Fick Secondary School. Some learners missed assessments and exams because of safety concerns, but Maile says they will be given another opportunity. The department has also strengthened psychosocial support and school safety measures.

A 7-11 on Liberty Heights Avenue in Northwest Baltimore, Maryland, has become a flashpoint of community rage and resistance after Ade Oba Tokunbo (Stephen King), a 74-year-old resident, was attacked and brutally beaten there by six teenagers on July 7, 2026. The same location is also the site of multiple robberies and the murder of Victorious Swift in March of 2017. In October 2025, a police operation left 122 people dead in the favelas of Penha and Alemão, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. Its aim was to weaken the Comando Vermelho, or "Red Command", one of Brazil's oldest and most powerful criminal organisations. The gang is growing rapidly; in 16 years it has increased its area of control by 90 percent and is extending its influence far beyond Brazil.

Soldiers have been deployed to the streets of Johannesburg in the first major troop deployment since South African President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to crack down on violent crime and illegal mining. In the late-1980s, Father Gregory Boyle witnessed the devastating  impact of gang violence in his community during the so-called Decade of  Death that peaked at 1,000 gang-related  killings in 1992 in Los Angeles.  In the face of criminal justice policies of  suppression and mass incarceration, Father Boyle and community members adopted what was a radical approach – at the time – to treat gang members as human  beings. In 1988, they started what would eventually become Homeboy  Industries, which employs and trains former gang members in a range of  social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to thousands of  men and women who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life. Father Greg Boyle spoke with Movement Is Life's Dr. Bonnie Simpson Mason for an episode that was originally published in 2020.
