In this episode we are talking about a subject that is really hard to approach. We know that our military members need to have good mental health in order to most effectively complete the mission. However, the military also comes with many different types of trauma. From basic training to deployments each person experiences things that will affect how they portrait the world going forward. Unfortunately for a lot of military members they are going to suffer from PTSD, Anxiety, or Depression. We are hopeful that mental health will continue to become a more talked about topic as you will hear from our guest Lara Brown-Akerstrom today that sadly it's not always approached as it should. We all know the all to daunting statistic of 20 veterans per day die by suicide as a result of lack of treatment or failed treatment for mental disorders. (Mental Health First Aid) We hope by speaking on the issue, it will bring more awareness and hopefully reach the concerned ears of the right person. As military spouses this isn't a statistic to us, this is our spouses, and our friends they are talking about. Suffering in silence and waging a war inside their heads that we can't see. Reach out to your military family, keep in contact, know the signs and suggest resources. Because although you may feel annoying and persistent, there is something to be said for simply having people acknowledge your struggle. In a deeply important conversation, this week we are chatting with Suzi Freeman, a suicide prevention specialist, working primarily with police and military mom's. Suzi helps moms to become knowledgable and aware of signs of depression and anxiety in their kids, that could lead to suicide ideation and occurence. I wanted to provide a trigger warning in these show notes that we discuss a wide range of topics in this conversation, including suicide, anxiety, and despression. Powerfully, Suzi is on a mission to provide education, tools, resources, support, and so much more for the families and the individuals in the armed services. The Founder of Badass Warrior Moms and the Suicide Prevention Project, as well as being cerftied and trained in Neurolinguistic Programming, Hypnotherapy, and EFT Tapping, Suzi is living her life “at cause”, looking to prevent problems and issues before they start. With 1 of her 5 children in the armed forces, and another as a police officer, Suzi began her journey when she started to realize the levels of depression and anxiety in the communities surrounding her sons in the military and police. Suzi didn't want to start this type of mission because she had to, she wanted to be proactive in helping others realize that suicide should not be considered as an option. And her purpose and mission are fueling every step of her journey, knowing that quitting this path isn't an option, because she can't quit on those who need her. It's a moving and informative conversation, and Suzi welcomes anyone who is listening and would like to chat further, to reach out - see her Community phone number below. Listen in for the following: Introduction to the SAD Reduction Method and some of Suzi's top tips for reducing stress and anxiety. When speaking with someone who is contemplating suicide, Suzi provides in-depth knowledge to her QPR method: Question, Persuade, Refer. If you are a military momma, Suzi speaks about how to “cut the cord” with your child in the military, and not dump your emotions onto them whenever you connect. If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, review, subscribe, and pass along to your friends! It really helps us in the #podsquad out! Season Four of Home Base Nation will start in just a few weeks, and we have been working over the past few months to bring you another great season. Given what is going on in the world right now, our mental health and military community has its finger on the pulse with you all and our hearts are with the Ukrainian people and all those trying to escape the violence in the Ukraine right now. We sat down on Tuesday to record an upcoming episode with Mistress Carrie, Boston's beloved Rock DJ and spouse of an active-duty Marine, in conversation with our very own Brigadier General Jack Hammond. The two met in 2011 in Afghanistan, when General Hammond was leading command, and Mistress Carrie embedded herself with U.S. troops there. During this recording, the conversation turned to the situation in the Ukraine, and specifically how it might be affecting our veteran and military family communities. We acknowledge that this new conflict will stir up complicated emotions and memories among our veterans, active-duty troops, and all our military families, and we felt it was important to share this with our audience today, ahead of the full episode release.
