Let's be friends! What would you trade for more time? After 25 years prosecuting high-profile cases in Minneapolis, Debbie Russell made a decision many dream of but few execute – walking away from her legal career at 55, trading a full pension for what she calls "full-time freedom." Her journey represents a profound lesson in the power of choice and the courage required to author your own next chapter. Since her twenties, Debbie had been planning this transition, understanding that her legal career would be just one segment of a multifaceted life. This wasn't about escaping a job she hated, but about honoring a promise she'd made to her younger self. The path wasn't without emotional hurdles. Debbie describes the strange experience of a virtual retirement party during the pandemic that felt like "attending her own wake." This speaks to the process of "unbecoming" that precedes becoming something new – shedding an identity cultivated over decades involves genuine grief, even when you're ready to move forward.Through writing her award-winning book "Crossing 51: Not Quite a Memoir," Debbie found purpose in connecting her midlife transformation with her grandfather's parallel journey at the same age. His story – becoming addicted to Demerol while working as a successful physician, then dying at just 59 – taught her that time is finite and not guaranteed. This realization infuses her current life with mindful appreciation for each day. Most remarkably, after moving to a 10-acre rural property, Debbie found herself feeling less lonely than ever before. Despite having fewer people physically around her, her relationships became intentional rather than circumstantial. Her story offers profound insights for anyone facing midlife transitions – whether through retirement, empty nesting, or simply questioning "what's next?"Visit https://debbie-russell.com to learn more about her journey and connect about her book. What chapter will you write next?

She's found writing and creativity to be central to her own well-being and mental health, and is always keen to accompany other artists on their journey to developing their own authentic creative practice. In her writing Elizabeth explores the different countries and cultures she grew up with, as well as themes of race & ethnicity, motherhood, womanhood, language, love, loss and grief, and a touch of magical realism. NOT QUITE AN OCEAN, now available from Nine Pens Press! https://www.amazon.com/dp/1739151747 'Not Quite an Ocean' by Elizabeth M. Castillo is a paean to the feminine, to motherhood and to the natural world. At once these poems are both unabashed in their celebration of womanhood, and are searing in their unflinching confrontation with darker undercurrents that threaten to break and destroy. The poems in 'Not Quite an Ocean' are beacons, are rallying calls, and are ultimately a roars of strength, pride and hope that cannot be silenced or subdued: To be woman is to be everything All things bound together and, if you can manage it that little bit more. Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Elizabeth! All the best! -- Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro (cruzfolio.com). If you like the show: leave a review, or share it with someone who's starting their creative journey! Your support truly makes a difference! Go make a dent. Much love, j https://artscalling.com

This week on the podcast Robert, Andrew, Rutledge, and Stretch talked about the big news coming out of the Nintendo Direct. Pokemon DLC seems to be named incorrectly, Detective Pikachu still seems weird, and we're all excited that Super Mario RPG is finally getting a remake. Surprising news this week came from Los Angeles as their financial plans for the next few years don't factor in the presence of E3. The big game that we've pretty much all been playing is Final Fantasy 16. We talked about what's been working for us well like the combat system, while also spending some time talking about elements of the game that just aren't feeling as good. As has become customary for pay-per-views, two title fights are on the docket Saturday at UFC 281. One is a hotly anticipated middleweight championship match between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira that everybody is stoked for and where nobody seems to know what will happen. The other one? Not QUITE so much intrigue. In the evening's co-main event, Zhang Welli challenges Carla Esparza for the strawweight belt in a bout that most assume marks the end of Esparza's reign as champion. Then again, we didn't think Esparza was going to beat Rose, now did we? So, maybe there's a chance? Plus Cool Dusty P and Mikie C. in a banger and ... Mitch describes some behind-the-scenes challenges he ran into while touring the American south with Hannah Gadsby.Endnotes:Todd Barry, Thank You for Coming to Hattiesburg: One Comedian's Tour of Not-Quite-the-Biggest Cities in the World (New York, Gallery Books, 2017) p.70. Capsule Review: the title pretty much covers it. Specific anecdotes about life on the road in 55 cities, mostly smaller-sized, mostly American. Tone is typical Barry knowingly false bravado complaining about minutiae such as limited coffee options in rural outposts and shabby green room decor. Slack Score: 12.6; Snark Score 4.5; Overall FCA ranking: 303Hannah Gadsby, Ten Steps to Nanette; A Memoir Situation (New York, Penguin/Random House, 2022) p. 214. Capsule Review: Exhaustive personal history of life in homophobic Tasmania in the ‘80s and ‘90s as an impoverished, undiagnosed, autistic lesbian. Often excruciating, occasionally humorous, extremely thorough, touching on seemingly every aspect of her formative years. Slack Score: -14.2; Snark Score: 6; Overall FCA ranking: 16James Acaster, James Acaster's Classic Scrapes (London, Headline Publishing Group, 2017) p. 301. Capsule Review: A series of challenging or embarrassing scenarios (“scrapes”) that Acaster has found himself in, in more or less chronological order, that are mildly amusing though solidly crafted. Has a skydiving anecdote similar to my own. Slack score: 9.3; Snark Score: 13.7; Overall FC ranking: 139

Episode 50: This (remixed) Tidbit Tuesday is a little more philosophical in nature as I answer two of our listener questions around photo manipulation - whether that is done in the field or in the digital darkroom. Is there a difference between photo editing and photo manipulation? And if so, where's the line? Who makes that call? Should you disclose when you have manipulated an image? What are the implications if you do or don't? Learn how this debate has transpired over the relatively short life of photography as an artform and how it can inform our decisions about how we approach our creative practices with our photography. In this episode, I discuss:The practice of photo manipulation throughout the history of photographyThe debate about photo editing versus photo manipulation when it comes to landscape and nature photographyThree points to consider when deciding how much editing is acceptable in your own photographyAnd more!LINKS MENTIONED:Brief History of Photography Blog from Not Quite in FocusProfessor Jeff Curto's lecture, Photo History - Class 12 - The Manipulative ImpulseGroup f/64's Manifesto (1932) National Geographic, How We Spot Altered PicturesNANPA's Truth in Captioning StatementKenneth Brower article in The Atlantic, Photography in the Age of FalsificationUniversity of Washington Magazine, The Call of the Wild Beckons Photographer Art WolfeGuy Tal's book, More Than a RockFull Show Notes***HAVE A QUESTION?Record a Question for Tidbit TuesdayLOVE THE OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY PODCAST?Ways you can support the show:Buy Me a CoffeeLeave a Rating and ReviewSign up for the Outdoor Photography School NewsletterShare the show with others!CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE TO FOCUS?Download my FREE Hyperfocal Distance Made Easy EbookABOUT BRENDA PETRELLA (host)Learn more about meVisit my online portfolioConnect with me on Instagram
