In this episode, we speak with Patrick Cotnoir, co-producer of the new documentary, "I'm George Lucas: A Connor Ratliff Story". This documents behind-the-scenes of the hilarious “The George Lucas Talk Show” which you can see live or on YouTube. Both the documentary and talk show pay tribute to George Lucas by answering this question: what would George Lucas be like as a talk show host? “The George Lucas Talk Show” has hosted guests such as Weird Al, Ahmed Best, and Whoopi Goldberg. What would these people say to George Lucas? Patrick Cotnoir, co-producer and talent booker, shares some great stories on both the documentary and talk show. He also helped create “The Naboo Movie: All-Star Live Reading of The Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary” and we just had to get some behind-the-scenes stories of that as well! It is always great speaking with someone who has just as much love and respect for George and the Star Wars Saga. "I'm George Lucas: A Connor Ratliff Story" is available now on VOD. About the Documentary: “I'm George Lucas: A Connor Ratliff Story” For five years, comedian Connor Ratliff has performed as retired filmmaker George Lucas in his monthly UCB NY cult comedy show, "The George Lucas Talk Show". Co-hosted by actor Griffin Newman and featuring A-list guests booked by producer Patrick Cotnoir, the show allows Connor to both exalt and poke fun at the vast world of Lucas, including Star Wars. However, Connor begins to question if the show should continue due to its ongoing stress with little financial and career gain. By following the live performances and behind the scenes for one year, the mysteries of Connor's inner self are explored in this portrait of an artist, and his own feelings on his history, value, and legacy are revealed. Did you know that in retirement, George Lucas decided to host a live talk show with his sidekick Watto? That's the conceit of The George Lucas Talk Show starring Connor Ratliff (from the podcast Dead Eyes) as Lucas, and Griffin Newman (from The Tick) playing the alien character Watto. They've had famous guests on the show, including people who know Lucas in real life. The guests have to pretend that Connor is George. Over the past 10 years, the show had grown into a cult phenomenon to the point where there's now a documentary about it called, I'm “George Lucas”: A Connor Ratliff Story. Connor and I talk about why he's fascinated with what defines success or failure, and how it's become a theme in his work. We also discuss his new podcast Tiny Dinos, which is like a combination of Jurassic Park and The Tonight Show on a micro-scale. This episode is sponsored by TodayTix, Incogni and Henson Shaving. It's been said that in 1999, movies changed forever. The Matrix. The Sixth Sense. And of course, Muppets From Space and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. So on this episode of Hubba-Wha?!, Becca is ready to party like it's 1999. Joining her in the time machine are Patrick Cotnoir of the George Lucas Talk Show and ASSSSCAT and Anthony Strand from ToughPigs. That's right, a rematch for the ages! Who's the Toughest Pig this time? Our contestants will have to answer questions about mixed up Christmases, the crimes of Telly Monster, and disappointing box office data if they want to win fabulous prizes! Play along and let us know how you do! PLUS: the adventures of M. Night Shyamalan's good friend!
Welcome to the Grindhouse!! We're covering THE seminal 2007 double feature: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. But wait, there's more! Fictional trailers by real directors, like Edgar Wright's "Don't!", Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the SS", and Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" (now a major motion picture!) Joining the podcast this week is Patrick Cotnoir (@cotnoir), producer of The George Lucas Talk Show and talent booker for Asssscat at UCB Franklin. (0:00) Intro (1:01) Planet Terror (46:15) Grindhouse Trailers (50:50) Death Proof
My guest today is Patrick Cotnoir, best known as the producer and co-host of The George Lucas Talk Show, he's also been the producer and talent booker of over 500 legendary UCB ASSCAT 3000 shows, The Chris Gethard Show, Comedy Central's The President Show and Marvel Entertainment, and is a living testament to how a glittering career in showbiz can be started simply by putting your hand up and asking if you can help out at all. Recorded at the Edinburgh Fringe, August 2023.
Connor Ratliff (Dead Eyes) joins the show and it's a classic, as Connor runs us through a multi-year bit that culminated in a satire Twitter account he ran getting blocked by the well-known author of "Game Change", John Heilemann. We try to get to the bottom of that as we discuss what got people upset about Dead Eyes, weird new candies, and talk of the George Lucas Talk Show takes us down a deep Star Wars rabbit hole as John reveals that Limp Bizkit got to see the premiere of Phantom Menace at Skywalker Ranch and somehow this also leads Stefan to reveal (again) that he ate dry cat food as a child. Plus, Connor starts making online comics to cope with the general state of online, Stefan goes to TwitchCon in Vegas, and Ice-T drops some more wonderful knowledge on Twitter. If you want more wonderful knowledge for your own beautiful brain, you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every damn month. Last week, Dana Smith rejoined the show for a great mailbag episode, and coming up TOMORROW, it's the start of what will be the greatest bonus episodes in Blocked Party history. You simply cannot miss it. We also have ad-free episodes, merch discounts, and a bunch more, so don't delay! Connor Ratliff is a comedian and the host of the very popular podcast Dead Eyes, which if you haven't listened to it, you simply must. Right now. He also starred on the new show In the Cards, available now wherever you get your pods. You can follow Connor on Twitter and Instagram at @connorratliff. Learn more about your ad choices. [Whip sound!!!!] Today we rewind through a fissure in time and return to our Indiana Jones miniseries for one last movie. Joining us to explore DIAL OF DESTINY are returning guests, Griffin Newman and Connor Ratliff, who you might know as the hosts of The George Lucas Talk Show. Now wait a minute. Ronna's Ashkenazi sneeze reflex is tingling, and (Bryan) is jet lagged like you wouldn't believe, but we've got a FABULOUS show this week. Joining us in The Carriage House is none other than actor, writer, and comedian Connor Ratliff! You know Connor from his smash hit podcast DEAD EYES about being fired by Tom Hanks. He's also got not one, not two, but THREE shows coming up at the Edinburgh Fringe this August based on his delightfully quirky creation THE GEORGE LUCAS TALK SHOW. Catch it on YouTube. It's Star Wars Celebration week, folks! The annual Jabba-and-Jawas jamboree is coming to London this year, and that is all the excuse that Connor Ratliff, Griffin Newman and Patrick Cotnoir needed to bring their runaway hit, The George Lucas Talk Show, to the Soho Theatre for a couple of shows on Friday April 7th and Saturday April 8th. If you're unfamiliar, it's an improvised spoof chat show in which Ratliff plays Retired Filmmaker George Lucas (yes, that George Lucas) and Newman plays his sidekick Watto (yes, that Watto), interviewing real guests about Star Wars and other animals. Our Chris Hewitt is a huge fan, and he jumped at the chance to talk to the trio about the show's origins, how it transformed during the pandemic, and what they have in store for London audiences. Enjoy.
Befitting the producer he is, Patrick Cotnoir (The Chris Gethard Show, The George Lucas Talk Show, ASSSSCAT) would book the hell out of his own funeral. He answers the usual TIYA questions and tries to deconstruct the show in the process. According to me, he fails! https://www.youtube.com/c/patrickhwillems (Patrick Willems) spent six years on YouTube trying to attract an audience for his short films, before he pivoted to video essays about everything from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elXLAcl363A (baseball movies) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBqRAaZulAY (Francis Ford Coppola's filmography) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6SbUIDnzJw (Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again.) Those essays got wildly popular and today, he has more than 350,000 subscribers. However, he kept making shorts, embedded in his essays as narrative framing devices. In other words, he says, he "trick[ed] the audience into watching short films that I also wanna make, but that normally would not get the views on YouTube or have sponsors on them." Then, starting in early 2020, he began connecting those narrative shorts into a serialized story about an evil talking coconut named Charl. This so-called "Charl saga" culminated in June with the release of a feature-length film, https://nebula.app/videos/patrickhwillems-night-of-the-coconut (Night of the Coconut), which is available on the streaming platform Nebula. This week Jacob visits with world-renowned puppeteer, Mike Quinn. In 1977, Mike regularly visited the set of The Muppet Show with his homemade puppets, eventually meeting Jim Henson. Through his visits, he learned more about puppeteering and received encouragement from Jim Henson and his co-workers. After leaving school in 1980, Quinn joined The Jim Henson Company and worked on the 1981 film The Great Muppet Caper puppeteering in crowd scenes and acting as a double for various main Muppet characters. Quinn later designed and built the Podlings for The Dark Crystal, where he also performed the Skeksis Slave Master SkekNa (who was voiced by David Buck). During the filming of Return of the Jedi, Quinn (and David Barclay and David Greenaway) were assistant puppeteers to Frank Oz in his performance of Yoda. He also performed the role of Nien Nunb in Return Of the Jedi. Between the late 1980s and early 1990s, Quinn joined with fellow puppeteer David Barclay, creating Ultimate Animates, a production company specializing in the new building and performing techniques for internal and external puppet productions. Quinn joined George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic as an animator, first working on Jurassic Park III and then Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. He reprised his role as Nien Nunb in Star Wars: The Force Awakens,[1] a role that he reprised again in Star Wars: The Last Jedi[2] and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and performed for the Disney theme park ride Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. In 2018, Mike Quinn provided the voice of the Stan Laurel-based character Agnes Packard in the Cartoon Network series, Mighty Magiswords opposing Ken Mitchroney voicing her Oliver Hardy-based husband Mr. Pachydermus in the episode "Pachydermus Packard and the Camp of Fantasy". Quinn appeared as a guest on The George Lucas Talk Show during their May the AR Be LI$$ You Arli$$ Marathon fundraiser. Real Conversations with Jacob Young is brought to you by Boys Town. You'll notice that this episode is longer than most of our episodes. That's just the way it tends to go with Griffin Newman. Episodes of his own podcast, Blank Check, regularly clock in at more than two hours. He acts in films and those often top two hours as well. And although he's only in his thirties, Griffin has had a long career, growing up in a showbiz-adjacent family and starting in standup while not yet out of middle school. We hear how he quit acting (several times) and always got pulled back in, sometimes for dream-come-true roles like Arthur in The Tick, sometimes for experiences that ended up being nightmares, like acting in and then deeply regretting acting in a Woody Allen movie. Griffin Newman examines the roles that depression and anxiety played in his life decisions and where one can see them poking out in his performances.Listen to Blank Check with Griffin & David on the podcatcher of your choice. This week's episode is with the very funny Connor Ratliff (Dead Eyes Podcast, The George Lucas Talk Show)! Connor actually started his podcast because of a specific story about an audition he once had for the movie Band Of Brothers in which Tom Hanks said he had...dead eyes. It's an incredible story and we are so lucky to have him tell it on this podcast! Don't worry, Connor's had some pretty incredible acting jobs since then, but those memories stick. Of course we talk about his jobs that weren't in entertainment like his longest job (and happiest) at the flagship Barnes and Noble store in New York City. Connor's stories about working at the bookstore are special and he really makes you feel like you're right there with him. Anna and Ellen also talk about the awkwardness of running into people you used to work with and whether it's fun to say hi or just completely ignore them. Do you say hi or hide?! Don't forget to follow Connor at @Connorratliff on social media, and check out his podcast Dead Eyes! Also, if you want to watch this episode? MARJOE IS BACK! This month's "COULD'VE Been a Cannon" starts off with a bang...because we have a special guest! That's right the first COULD'VE with someone besides the Cannon Bros. Special guest Connor Ratliff (Dead Eyes podcast, The George Lucas Talk Show, Search Party, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is here to break down the 1978 Luigi Cozzi Star Wars rip off "STARCRASH". A pastiche of space action, possible Heavy Metal like robot love connections, signature Italian film ADR and oh yeah...David Hasselhoff is in this...sort of. But the BIG question of this film is... Do you love Elle as much as we all do? It's all here in STARCRASH! Follow us on the socials! This week we explore George Lucas' "Star Wars" (1977) AKA "Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope" with Patrick Cotnoir (George Lucas Talk Show), and search for the scene at its center.
