Episode Synopsis: Mina continues to sleep solidly during the daylight hours. Van Helsing commits himself to remain awake at night while Mina is awake, but finds himself dozing during the day while driving the carriage, and when he awakes, is overjoyed to see the Castle Dracula looming in the distance. As they settle down for the night, Van Helsing creates a circle surrounding Mina, using the holy Eucharist broken into a fine dust. Mina admits that she is unable to leave the circle, which Van Helsing is pleased to hear, as it means she can not leave in the night. When Van Helsing gets up to feed the fire, Mina stops him, and he discovers that the swirling snow has materialized into the three Vampire Women from Jonathan's diary. They beckon to Mina, but are unable to enter the circle. In the morning, Van Helsing discovers that the horses, who had been outside the circle, are dead. He is unable to awaken Mina to hypnotize her. While resting the horses, Seward and Quincey catch sight of the Szgany hurrying along with their wagonload as though being chased. They are aware of the presence of wolves in the woods around them. Van Helsing leaves Mina sleeping in the holy circle, and attends to the gristly business of sanctifying the Count's castle against him. He is momentarily delayed by the realization that Mina might be in danger from wolves, but presses on with his work. He starts by removing the great front doors, so no spell might trap him inside the castle. He quickly finds the chapel and the three brides who sleep in their coffins. He falters in his task if dispatching them, as he begins to fall under a trance, but is awakened by the sound of Mina's voice calling from afar. He drives his stake through each of the brides and cuts off their heads, upon which act their bodies crumble to dust. Van Helsing sanctifies the Count's grave and meets Mina who awakens and tells him that Jonathan is coming in their direction and the end is nigh. Ep# 55 - Mexican Horror Films in the 60s

By the beginning of the ‘60s, Mexican Horror had developed its own distinct tropes, evolved from old Universal monster movies to create formulaic crowd pleasers with plenty of gothic atmosphere and vengeful supernatural creatures. But by the end of the ‘60s, they were already expanding into more original films that thoughtfully approached terror and dread in a way that's reminiscent of modern horror techniques. So take a listen and don't worry – this frightening trip is punctuated with moments of comedy and romance and endless bouts of wrestling along the way.As promised, in this episode Bart and Jenna brave the unknown and journey to the land of Mexican Horror films to peek through their fingers at vampires, werewolves, ghosts and murderers – all of whom speak Spanish! With luchadors and lycars to protect them, they discover that there's much to love about the genre than these scaredy cats expected. The following films are discussed:• Skeleton of Mrs. Morales (1960) El esqueleto de la señora Morales Directed by Rogelio A. González Starring Arturo de Córdova, Amparo Rivelles, Elda Peralta• Santo vs. the Vampire Women (1962) Santo vs. las mujeres vampiro Directed by Alfonso Corona Blake Starring Santo, Lorena Velázquez, María Duval• La Loba (1965) Directed by Rafael Baledón Starring Kitty de Hoyos, Joaquín Cordero, Columba Domínguez• Pedro Páramo (1967) Directed by Carlos Velo Starring John Gavin, Ignacio López Tarso, Pilar Pellicer• The Scapular (1968) El escapulario Directed by Servando González Starring Enrique Lizalde, Enrique Aguilar, Carlos Cardán• The Book of Stone (1969) El libro de piedra Directed by Carlos Enrique Taboada Starring Marga López, Joaquín Cordero, Norma LazarenoAlso mentioned:• The Ship of Monsters (1960) La nave de los monstruos Directed by Rogelio A. There are certain events that are seasonal in nature. The monarch butterflies return to Mexico each winter. The swallows return to San Juan Capistrano each March. The giant great white sharks return to Amity Island each July. And we, Gentle Listeners, each May, must return to Horror Mexico, land of the luchador - the heroic, super human wrestler who uses his masked powers for good and not for evil. Unless of course they are temporarily under the control of a mad scientist. This month, as last May, our guide and our gateway to Horror Mexico is Santo, The Saint, The Man in The Silver Mask, and this month, he is going to fight very undead, but very beautiful vampire women. In this early entry into the Santo mythos, the 7th film out of the eventual 52 that would be made, the movie both continues the tropes and traditions of the luchador, while adding some serious production values which add to the atmospheric black and white. Let’s get in our convertible, put the top down, blast some bossa nova music, grab a Big Gulp and some Slim Jim’s from the 7-11 and head down to Horror Mexico, shall we? Yes, we shall. VAMPIRE LADIES WITH A THIRST FOR BLOOD This is a unique anthology of time-tested shudder-stories about a unique breed of women who "refused to take death lying down" ― and it is now also available in audiobook format. Though they may all be siblings beneath the skin (and graveyard as well!), these vampiric sisters are as different as any eight women could be. One, "The Good Lady Ducayne", prefers to acquire her nourishment through more scientific means. Another doesn't even drink blood at all; her approach to draining the life from her victims is somewhat more direct (but we think you'll agree that "Luella Miller" deserves the appellation "vampire" every bit as much as any of the rest). Some inhabit ancient European castles with bloodlines that stretch back into history ("Clarimonde"); others (like "Mrs. Amworth") are freshly minted, dwelling in the house right across the street. Some are reached by automobile ("The Dark Castle"); others lie far back in time in the late 1700s ("Wake Not the Dead"). Some joined the legions of the undead via the standard methods, like suicide ("The Blood Is the Life"), while still others owe their existence to very unusual means indeed ("Placide's Wife"). Some even embraced their fate for love ("Each Man Kills"). There is one thing these frightful female fiends have in common, however, besides their fangs: Once you've met them, you will never forget them! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Mucha Lucha! This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with graphic design/tattoo artist J. Gonzo (http://jgonzodesigns.com/) and author Keith Rainville (frompartsunknown.com) to talk about the art of Mexican wrestling: Lucha Libre. First, Gonzo talks tattoos, his history of giving them, and the scary ways to get 'em. Turns out Kyle has a lot of friends with prison tattoos, which should surprise no one. Natalie also gets upset because Gonzo has offered to give Kyle his long sought after “Slow Ride” tattoo. But that is a story for another day. The boys get down to business and discuss the history and cultural significance of Lucha Libre wrestling. They talk about how Nacho Libre was many Americans' first exposure to Lucha culture. Gonzo defends the film for all its flaws and points out a few ways that the film could have gone from third-tier Jack Black movie to legit love letter to Lucha wrestling. Speaking of movies, Kyle picks Keith's brain about the history of Luchadores on film. For those who don't know, Luchador films are an amazingly weird genre where you can watch a man in a mask fight guys dressed like Dracula. Believe it or not, that's something Kyle is SUPER into. Burnside, as the host most well versed in wrestling, works to understand the differences between American and Luchador wrestling. Gonzo and Keith also explain how the styles diverged and evolved over time and how Luchadore wrestling plays into the identity of Mexican culture. Keith talks about his history with Lucha Libre and the Lucha zines he published throughout the '90s. They talk about '90s zine culture and how zines about specific subcultures found their way around the world in a time before the internet. Both Gonzo and Keith's lives and careers have been massively affected by Lucha culture, and they share some experiences from their own lives that are pretty incredible. Get ready for some high flying moves, mysterious characters, and masked men punching werewolves in the face. This episode has everything! Viva! Weekly Rads: White Reaper, Prey, Cowboy Bebop Raddendums: Love and Rockets, Latino Comics Expo, Lucha Mexico, Tales of Masked Men, Santo vs. the Vampire Women, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, Champions of Justice, Nacho Libre, Lucha Lucha, Sonámbulos, Lucha Underground, Fantastic Planet, Los Straightjackets

In this particular episode instead of the usual stuff I go on an adventure across the country as I search for the fabled Holy Grail. And if that wasn't enough before I actually search and/or find said Holy Grail I spend my time with a show that has nothing to really do with anything other than to give the original author more time to come up with new material. So what actually happens on this episode is the news, the Trailer Spot is The Campaign the movie that stars Will Ferrell. Don't forget the Box Office Report and for reviews this week I decided to try my hand with Samson vs. The Vampire Women and Star Force: Fugtive Alien II. I'll be honest I did a terrible job reviewing those two movies so for your enjoyment you all can watch me crash and burn as I attempt to review thems. Well enjoy the show!
