Vanetta Rivera is a remarkable individual who has embarked on a challenging journey of motherhood at the young age of 17. Despite the difficulties that come with raising three teenagers, she remains determined and resilient. Vanetta is not only dedicated to her role as a mother but is also committed to her personal growth and education. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology while juggling full-time work and dealing with her own mental health challenges, Vanetta is an inspiration to others who may have faced similar struggles. Her ability to balance her responsibilities as a mother, student, and employee showcases her determination and dedication. One significant aspect of Vanetta's mission is to encourage individuals who started parenting early and didn't have the opportunity to pursue higher education to consider going back to school. She firmly believes that it's never too late to further one's education and work towards their goals. Vanetta's support system is strengthened by the presence of Terique, her husband, and high school sweetheart, who has been by her side throughout their journey together. Their partnership and commitment to each other provide a strong foundation for their family. Furthermore, Vanetta is an advocate for seeking therapy, emphasizing its importance even for those who may not believe they have mental health issues. She is dedicated to destigmatizing the idea that People of Color should not seek help for their mental well-being. Vanetta story serves as a source of inspiration and empowerment for others facing similar challenges, demonstrating that with determination, support, and a commitment to personal growth, it is possible to overcome obstacles and achieve one's goals. Fearless, Inspired and Free Podcast endeavors to build a community of learning, appreciation, encouragement, resilience, growth, acceptance, kindness and support! This week's guest, Vanetta Denise Roy is a self-described mother, grandmother, employee and boss! She has a Masters in Education and is employed as an educator in public schools with a specialty in special education. She is also the owner of Surfs Up South Shore and Surf's Up Old Town in Chicago. Vanetta is a genuine lover of life and humanity. She is free spirited, always rooting for happiness and what that means to you! Vanetta, LOVES people and watching scary movies. She believes in love and hates when people judge! Vanetta encourages people to be "fearless enough" to challenge the “norms” and what society tells us to be. Vanetta says she was "once a young mother who has finally become a grown ass woman!" (this made me chuckle). Vanetta delves into why she feels we have to be fearless and challenge what society tells us to be. She also talks about how genuine love restores and brings you joy and that we are responsible for our happiness. We discuss the fact that we don't always believe that we are enough! Social media has somewhat distorted images and makes it harder for the youth today to accept that they are good enough and being themselves is the true goal. When talking about her journey from young single mother and student to employee to business owner, Vanetta illustrates her walk and how "sacrifice and struggle comes before success", and that "God lines up everything you need when it is the right decision". In the end Vanetta stresses that the Laws of Attraction are real and how the positive energy you put into the universe is reciprocal! You don't want to miss this very honest and open conversation about motherhood, running a business, why she loves her students so much, parents who sometimes encourage you to deter dreams thinking they are protecting you and how in the end you have to be true to yourself. From Harvard sociologist and MacArthur "Genius" Matthew Desmond, a landmark work of scholarship and reportage that will forever change the way we look at poverty in America In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. Arleen is a single mother trying to raise her two sons on the $20 a month she has left after paying for their rundown apartment. Scott is a gentle nurse consumed by a heroin addiction. Lamar, a man with no legs and a neighborhood full of boys to look after, tries to work his way out of debt. Vanetta participates in a botched stickup after her hours are cut. All are spending almost everything they have on rent, and all have fallen behind. The fates of these families are in the hands of two landlords: Sherrena Tarver, a former schoolteacher turned inner-city entrepreneur, and Tobin Charney, who runs one of the worst trailer parks in Milwaukee. They loathe some of their tenants and are fond of others, but as Sherrena puts it, “Love don’t pay the bills.” She moves to evict Arleen and her boys a few days before Christmas. Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. But today, most poor renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing, and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers. In vivid, intimate prose, Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America’s vast inequality—and to people’s determination and intelligence in the face of hardship. Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible. give it a'listen It's a real Freaky Friday on the show today: Candace's audio was good and Ash's sucked balls. Richard Pryor is playing three different roles here. The first being a poor orange picker named Leroy Jones who gets laid off when by mistake he joins the worker's union during one of their demonstrations. Afterwards he is forced to leave his wife and family behind which also includes Leroy's father (also played by Pryor) to go to Los Angeles. Leroy ends up working for the same company that fired him back home. He is a manager at the company but he is now distant from his former pals. He meets and falls in love with Vanetta who is a labor organizer which leaves him splitting time between his wife Annie Mae and Vanetta. When Leroy finds out that the Reverend Lenox Thomas (also played by Pryor) has got his wife pregnant while he was absent, he then make the moves on the reverend's wife.

Harvard sociologist and MacArthur "Genius" Matthew Desmond has written a landmark work of scholarship and reportage that will forever change the way we look at poverty in America. In this brilliant, heartbreaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of several families on the edge. Martin Bandyke’s interview with Matthew Desmond was originally recorded on March 9, 2016.

My Sister My Seed was founded in 2013 by Dr. Vanetta R. Rather to address the personal, social, and systemic issues that negatively affect and impact women and girls.  After over a decade of preaching to youth and families as an ordained minister, Dr. Rather sought additional methods to address the needs of those she served.  With 70% of women and children in the US currently living in or on the brink of poverty, domestic sex trafficking devastating the lives of women and girls from every socio-economic background, and a broken system of education that leaves minority students behind, Dr. Rather felt compelled and called to action.  My Sister My Seed is the response to that call.
