The Aussie share market climbed for a fifth straight session, lifted by optimism over a temporary US-China trade deal that saw both countries reduce tariffs for 90 days. Global markets surged in response, with US stocks rising sharply and Australian stocks following suit—though gains faded slightly by close. Breville and Life360 soared on positive trade implications and strong earnings, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer confidence rebounded modestly, and all eyes now turn to upcoming US inflation data and Australia’s jobs report, with a local rate cut potentially on the horizon. FOLLOW US: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/inside-commerce/ ABOUT THIS EPISODE: International expansion is front of mind for many ecommerce teams in 2024. In this episode we delve into the complexities of managing a global ecommerce strategy with the DTC Ecommerce Manager at BRG Group brands, which include Breville and Sage Appliances. Myles shares his experience and insights on navigating the intricacies of maintaining multiple websites across 17 countries, including multiple languages. The conversation starts with the international setup and tech stack, and then covers the fundamental need for localisation of website content and the shopping experience. Myles explains that localising content is not just about translating text; it's about adapting the user experience to resonate with local cultures, preferences, and behaviours. This involves modifying product descriptions, adjusting imagery, and tailoring marketing messages to align with the expectations and norms of each region. Myles also highlights that true localisation requires a deep understanding of the local market, which often means collaborating closely with local teams or hiring native speakers. Another key aspect discussed is the importance of standardising the technology stack via central ownership. Myles explains that having a unified platform and centralised control helps ensure consistency, efficiency, and scalability. By standardising on a single ecommerce platform, the brand can streamline operations, manage updates more effectively, and reduce the complexity of maintaining different systems. Central ownership also facilitates better data integration, allowing for more comprehensive analytics and insights across all markets. However, with centralisation comes the challenge of maintaining a consistently high level of customer service across global teams. Myles candidly discusses the difficulties in achieving uniformity in customer service standards when dealing with diverse teams spread across various time zones and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, leveraging technology such as AI-driven customer service tools can help provide immediate and consistent support, bridging the gap between different regions. Throughout the podcast, Myles' insights provide a valuable roadmap for any ecommerce manager looking to navigate the complexities of a global ecommerce strategy, balancing localisation, technological standardisation, and exceptional customer service. Well, if you ever got tired of listening to me, talk. Today's the day when you just get to hear from my buddy, Chris Young, because I wound him up and clicked go, and he just talks, and it's great. He has so much, interesting experience and amazing insights. So Chris Young, if you don't know, I met him back when we started the Intellectual Ventures Lab, because he was the guy that Nathan Myhrvold hired to start the cooking projects. We built an experimental kitchen there. Chris ran the project called Modernist Cuisine. Which ended up publishing a 2,400 page cookbook on the science of cooking. That won every award in the world. It's literally a monument to modernist cooking. And these are new techniques for chefs and we talk about that a bunch today. Before that Chris had created the experimental lab at the Fat Duck and that's Heston Blumenthal's restaurant outside of London. Usually considered, if not the best restaurant on Earth, a contender. Since publishing Modernist Cuisine, Chris started a company called ChefSteps to popularize sous vide, which is the most successful of the techniques so far invented by modernists. You have to learn to sous vide. It's super easy. You can make everything you do come out perfectly. After selling that company to Breville, Chris started a new company called Combustion and Combustion is really cool startup. There's lots of lessons in here for entrepreneurs and folks who are making products. Chris is an amazing entrepreneur, very dedicated, really good at figuring out how to make everything work. Combustion is a difficult company to do because it's hardware and software; and it's in the kitchen; and it is hundreds of degrees, Fahrenheit. So it was just a lot to deal with. It's great to learn these lessons and they're shipping now and very successful with it. And then Chris has a YouTube channel called Chris Young Cooks, where he's doing some of the cool stuff that we used to do on Modernist Cuisine. Cool photography, but doing it for video and sharing some of the insights that they have about cooking. So anyway, You're going to have a blast listening to Chris. Important Links Intellectual Ventures Lab Modernist Cuisine The Fat Duck Combustion Chris Young Cooks About Chris Young Chris Young is a chef-scientist known for applying science and technology to create culinary experiences that earlier generations would never have imagined. Before becoming a chef, Young completed degrees in mathematics and biochemistry at the University of Washington. Unfulfilled with a life in the hard sciences, Young left his doctoral work behind for a job as a chef at one of Seattle's top-rated restaurants, Mistral. Young's expertise wasn't long secluded to the American Northwest. From 2003 to 2007, Young worked with the world-famous chef Heston Blumenthal to oversee development of some of his most innovative dishes. In 2004, Young opened The Fat Duck Experimental Kitchen, leading a team of more than six full-time chefs and coordinating the work of several consulting scientists. Beyond developing new dishes for The Fat Duck's menu, Young was responsible for recipe development for the critically acclaimed first and second seasons of BBC's “In Search of Perfection: With Heston Blumenthal.” In 2007, Young was asked by the renowned technologist, inventor, and accomplished cook Nathan Myhrvold to return to Seattle to work at Intellectual Ventures. Alongside Myrhvold, Young helped research, experiment, and eventually coauthor the eagerly anticipated, industry game-changing Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking. In 2012, along with Modernist Cuisine colleagues Chef Grant Lee Crilly and photographer Ryan Matthew Smith, Young co-launched an online-based culinary school ChefSteps, using an underground space beneath Seattle's Pike Place Market. Their mission: teaching people how to utilize modern techniques in their cooking. He is the founder and owner at Combustion Inc., a company that builds nice things that make cooking more enjoyable. Like a thermometer that's wireless, oven-safe, and uses machine learning to do what no other thermometer can: predict your food's cooking and resting times with uncanny accuracy.

Her firm Rachel Harrison Communications is a serious mover and shaker for dozens of hotels, resorts, liquor brands and bars across the US and around the world, with offices in the UK, Mexico and elsewhere. There's a lot of PR wisdom in here (my favorite: "Hiring a PR agency means you have to work HARDER, not less!") but we also cover vibrators, hiring diverse candidates, gift giving, Breville toasters, lists and awards, her fitness journey and how she has 4 other Rachels working for her. #2. Chef Wylie Dufresne answers some not-so-quick-fire questions, the inspiration behind Stretch Pizza, and takes Q&A from the audience. Chef Wylie reveals that stumbling upon a Breville pizza oven during the pandemic led to his obsession with pizza-making. His desire to understand the levers and variables involved in creating the perfect pizza dough became a source of stimulation and happiness during this difficult time, and ultimately led to the opening of his new concept, Stretch Pizza. This conversation with Chef Wylie highlights the importance of recognizing the craft and technique that goes into cooking. While it's easy to copy a dish or recipe, it takes years of practice and repetition to truly master the craft. By seeking feedback, recognizing when a dish is balanced, and being open to new ideas, chefs and creators can continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, and leave their mark on the culinary world.Where to find Chef Wylie Dufresne:Twitter - https://twitter.com/wyliedufresneInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wyliedufresneWhere to find host Josh Sharkey:Instagram - http://instagram.com/joshlsharkeyLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-sharkey-406965b/In this episode, we cover:(2:13) Lightning round (7:15) Why American cheese is so good(11:37) Funny moments at wd~50(18:00) Du's Donuts flavor hits and misses(19:16) Why pizza saved Wylie (24:35) How to identify talent(26:37) When it's time to stop iterating(28:17) Is imitation really the greatest form of flattery(31:00 ) What wd~50 was all about(32:50) When to take a pause on ideation(35:41) Innovating on equipment and ingredients
Send in your question via text to 1-800-485-3139. Question #1 (01:02): What're your thoughts on Meta's new paid verification system? As an Aussie getting first access to it is tempting, but do you see it adding value to normal churches / individuals other than the cheap clout? Question #2 (17:36): We're really battling with getting new volunteers for our Digital Campus and have tried personal asks, asking live during the hosting, social media posts. Any helpful tips or advice? Question #3A (26:08): We're currently building a second studio and also adding a larger coffee area for our team of 5-10 coffee drinkers in our team each Sunday. I personally have experience with Breville espresso machines, pour over, and Aeropress (and spending a long time to make one single great cup or coffee) but thinking of something maybe easier that still gives us a great coffee experience (Chemex probably?) Would love to know what Alex's thoughts are on this. Question #3B (31:17): Money is tight right now. What is your recommended low-cost whole bean coffee for French press/pour over? Costcos Colombian Supreme? Walmart? Trader Joe's? Question #4 (38:44): What has helped you be as confident as you are with your big, and successful, decisions?! Like: starting Pro Church Tools, creating a work culture that seems beyond healthy and incredible, launch a website builder, social media analysis, etc. How did you know those things would work out for you and how have you stayed focused and motivated to build all that you have?
