Anavilhete.comhttps://www.instagram.com/anavilhetehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ana-vilhete-emba-us-uk-921748103/Ana Vilhete has a London business with offices in London, the Netherlands, the United States and, most recently, South Africa.Alium Consultancy, which Ana founded in London in 2020, now grosses more than £10 million a year — roughly $13.4 million. She also has a London law firm with seven attorneys working under her. She is an entrepreneur, investor, a volunteer and an inspirational speaker. And now, she is bringing her business and her story to America. In her mid-30s, she is by any measure a success, and her story begins with virtually nothing in an inner-city slum in Luanda, Angola. She was born in the middle of that country's 27-year civil war. She lived without hot water until she was 13. She is dyslexic. So, when she says the heart of her message as an inspirational speaker is, “If I can do it, anyone can do it,” she has the credentials.“I think I have a great story to share of resilience and tenacity,” she said, “and I want to share my story, to inspire people. If I am able to be an inspiration to someone, I would love that. That is the legacy I want to leave behind.”The bare-bones outline of her personal story goes from Angola to another inner-city slum in Lisbon, Portugal, when she was 4. She speaks Portuguese because for a couple of centuries Angola was a Portuguese colony and it became a necessary language for the native peoples. That move resulted from a bullet. One night when the shooting was particularly bad, her mother took her into her bed and in the morning found a spent bullet in Ana's cot. From Lisbon, her story goes to London at age 16. Ana herself initiated that move.“It was October 2003. I went home one day and I told my mom I wanted to leave Portugal. I didn't think that I was going to be able to achieve any of my goals. I didn't know what my goals were, but I didn't think I was going to become the person I needed to be there, and I didn't know who I wanted to be, but I just felt limited.”All the girls she knew in Lisbon, her friends, were “getting ready to get pregnant, and I wanted more.”London at first was little better. Her parents were in poverty-level janitorial work, and family members helped, but housing was a constant concern. A year in they became homeless until her father persuaded a friend to take them in for a few months until they could save enough for rent. She learned English, she completed her equivalent to A-levels, roughly comparable to American high school, and went to college, with the help of student loans, to study law and criminology. She didn't know if she wanted to be a lawyer and took a year off — to work in a law firm.“I didn't enjoy working with lawyers, but at the end of that I had loads of friends that were lawyers. So, I decided to go to law school.”She finished law school, going part time. She graduated, then worked for various companies, big and small, a year, two years at a time, and in a small business in the staffing industry, what is called in the United States job placement, she learned the operation and business side of that industry. In 2020, when she founded Alium Consultancy, she fulfilled another lifelong desire — to own her own business.Alium places people in positions in the health, data and technology industries with a focus on empowering success through diversity in the workforce. She insists that she is nothing special.“Coming from where I came from, if I can do it, anybody can do it. Seriously, I'm not particularly smart, and I found out in law school that I'm dyslexic. It was tough — ‘I need to pass this exam. Why is this subject not going in?' — and so I think if I can do it, anyone can.”You don't always have to know what your calling is. You just have to have the tenacity to search for it, grab what's available and continue to search. You try this and you try that. Be willing to try new things. Be willing to spot an opportunity. Be alert to your environment, think about new ideas and be prepared to fail, because I failed a lot.”Be relentless, she says. Listen to your instincts, keep looking for the thing you might enjoy “waking up to,” and be resilient.“Life is tough. It is what it is. There's nothing you can do about it.”“Failure,” she says, “might not be your fault, but it is certainly your responsibility to keep going.”She delivers her message in Great Britain, in Portugal and other places. She tells her story in schools and colleges and is on television as a guest invited to share her opinions on various subjects.America is next, both for Alium Consultancy with its focus on filling positions and promoting diversity in the workforce, and as a speaker with an inspiring story to tell.“I can really demonstrate, like I said, that if I can do it, anyone can do it. I've got the credibility to back it up.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

With Nick back and Tim relieved not to be holding the fort alone, this episode begins with something different - a discussion about the anointing of the sick - and ends with something equally out of the ordinary - a joke that Nick really should have heard before. And if that wasn't enough right in the middle, Nick and Tim settle a matter playing rock, paper, scissors. Intrigued? Have a listen. Here is the music they played as well as the lyrics to the hymn from Glenstal Tim sang. 1. There is a Balm in Gilead sung by Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle from the album Spirituals in Concert (Kathleen Battle Edition, Vol. 10) 2. The Communion Antiphon for the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Amen Dico Vobis, Sung by the Dominican Friars. 3. Our Help is in the Name of the Lord from the Hillbilly Thomists 4. Salve Regina : Glissade dans la neige from the album Le grand silence (Bande originale du film) Compline Hymn: As shadows fall and daylight dies, Renew your gift of peace. Be with us as we close our eyes, Let all our troubles cease. Though we may sleep, stay in our hearts Keep your love there ablaze. When darkness of the night departs We'll rise to sing your praise. Watch over us that as we sleep, Our purpose stay aflame. Let angels all-night vigil keep To guard us in your name. To you be glory, God of rest, And glory to your Son, To you be glory, Spirit blest, The Holy Three in One. Amen

Episode 7 of Season 5 aired on 17 February 2022.  We kicked off with a track called 'Bulletproof' of Paul Stanley's second solo album titled Live To Win.  It was topical given the difficult times we are living in, it seems like everyone is going through some serious shit.   We added a bit more inspiration to the airwaves with Billy Squiers' track 'Stronger' off Here and Now.  It was a fairly quiet night by TSORR standards not a lot of people calling in so the show sort of had a life of its own. Cold Chisel's cover of 'Knocking on Heavens Door' showed once again just what a great live band they were.  Ian Moss's guitar work as always just shines.  Speaking of guitar work, there was plenty of it, Black Label Society, Exodus, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden all showcasing some of the greatest guitarists around.  For a bit of UK Punk, we called on Sex Pistols with 'Did U No Wrong' and Stiff Little Fingers with 'Wait and See'.  The latter perfectly demonstrates the wonderful ability of Jake Burns to shift quickly into 'really aggressive now' mode.Local music was ably handled by Roland Suttie, Johnathan Martin, and a seriously powerful track from Code 106 of a new EP called Alium.  Code 106 are sounded really good on this, I was suitably impressed.  From there we went on a Southern Rock jag for a few tracks, Kid Rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, and Whisky Myers all delivering the goods.  'Fill My World' the sad tale of Myles Kennedy's little dog Mozart alone in a storm and Sixx A.M. with 'Maybe It's Time' gave us a good 10 min of emotional stuff and it was tempting to mine that vein further, instead I opted for a mood-lifting end of show blitz of high octane 3 min tracks from The Offspring, The Distillers and Joan Jett (with her Blackhearts of course).  We closed out with UK Metal stalwarts Desolation Angels and a sublime track from Piet Botha.  Hope you enjoy it.       Artists featured:  Paul Stanley, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Manowar, Black label Society, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, MC5, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Rage Against the Machine, Code 106, Johnathan Martin, Roland Suttie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey Myers, The Black Crowes, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, Slash (feat Myles Kennedy), Sixx A.M., Kreator, Warrior Soul, The Offspring, The Distillers, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Desolation Angels, Piet Botha

Hollandse Nieuwe!
#20 - Ratio, van Arthur Klaassens

Hollandse Nieuwe!

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2021 51:33

Ah! if thou issueless shalt hap to die, The world will wail thee like a makeless wife; The world will be thy widow and still weep That thou no form of thee hast left behind, When every private widow well may keep By children's eyes, her husband's shape in mind: Look what an unthrift in the world doth spend Shifts but his place, for still the world enjoys it; But beauty's waste hath in the world an end, And kept unused the user so destroys it. No love toward others in that bosom sits That on himself such murd'rous shame commits.  Music:  Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Fantasia on Greensleeves“, from Sir John in Love, opera adapted from William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1928 Benjamin Britten, Corpus Christi Carol - performed by boy soprano Sebastian Carrington  Thomas Tallis, Spem in Alium (1750)

If the true concord of well-tuned sounds, By unions married, do offend thine ear, They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear. Mark how one string, sweet husband to another, Strikes each in each by mutual ordering; Resembling sire and child and happy mother, Who, all in one, one pleasing note do sing: Whose speechless song being many, seeming one, Sings this to thee: 'Thou single wilt prove none.'  Music:  Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Fantasia on Greensleeves“, from Sir John in Love, opera adapted from William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1928 Thomas Tallis, Spem in Alium (1750)

The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby

It's Time To Stretch Your Soul This is a sacred time of year, no matter what your beliefs. Spiritual traditions of every flavor honor this special season. Even if you have no spiritual belief system it's still a time for reflection, generosity and new resolutions. It's a time of year for gratitude, showing others how much you love them, and thinking about who you want to grow into as the next year spins into focus -- for everyone. It's also the perfect time to cultivate the practice of unconditional love. In the near future, you will likely have fork-in-the-road moments with friends, family, your kids, siblings, and your partner, in all their disappointing, annoying, frustrating, and hurtful humanity. At these moments you can choose judgment or empathy; contempt or compassion; anger or acceptance; grudge-holding or forgiveness. Its easy to love when your ego is stroked, when you feel gratified, and when you're awash in pleasurable "loving" feelings. But the heart of every religion teaches us that our purpose here is something else: To love when it’s hard. It can be challenging to stay compassionate and understanding with people who behave badly. The grand, beautiful paradox of this time of year is that -- with all it's unique stressors -- you will have many opportunities to practice staying soft and loving in the face of challenging relational moments. Accept the Challenge of Unconditional Love Choosing love even when it's hard feels selfless, but truthfully, you're the one who wins. Choosing love expands your soul, softens your spirit, and makes you a happier person. In giving love, you receive it -- whether or not anyone else participates. Learning how to do this will not only help others, make you feel good, improve your relationships, and contribute to world peace... it will help you grow into the self-actualized, "best self" that you were meant to be. With love to you,  Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby www.growingself.com The Season For Unconditional Love: Listen Now Music Credits: The Kronos Quartet, Black Angels: "Spem in Alium"   P.S. This set traverses many eras, weaving together decades in an exhibition of classical ambient music’s various roots and branches. From the awesome folks at dublab: “Travel through the Light Lock corridor as it is transformed by a dublab produced soundtrack of “furniture music.” Considered as the origins of ambient music and coined by French composer Erik Satie, this soundtrack along with lighting inspired by the work of James Turrell will be the perfect passage between the Grand Stern Hall and the Founders Room.” Tracklist below. Janet Cardiff’s Forty Part Motet is composed of forty speakers arranged in eight groups of five, configured as a large oval facing each other in the center of the room, and resting on stands so they are roughly just above eye level. The Motet, as Cardiff referred to it in our conversation, is a reworking of the English composer Thomas Tallis'sSpem in Alium (1570), which translates as “Hope in Any Other” and is sung in Latin by a choir of forty voices. The composition is arranged so that the choir, like the speakers, is divided into eight groups of five singers; each group consists of a soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, and bass. The groups alternate singing: first one, than another, sometimes alone, and at a few moments, all together, rising in a crescendo that breaks open the room to a place beyond the physical world. To hear the Motet in its entirety is profound. Spem in Alium is considered one of the greatest works of English music. The Forty Part Motet is equally a contemporary masterwork. It was a privilege, then, to sit down with Cardiff on November 12, 2015, to speak about her practice.  - Patricia Maloney Janet Cardiff lives in British Columbia, where she works in collaboration with her partner George Bures Miller. The artist is internationally recognized for immersive multimedia works that create transcendent multisensory experiences and draw the viewer into often unsettling narratives. Cardiff and Miller’s work has been included in recent group exhibitions and biennales such as Soundscapes at the National Gallery, London, the 19th Biennale of Sydney in 2014, and dOCUMENTA (13). Representing Canada at the 2001 Venice Biennale, Cardiff and Miller received the Biennale’s Premio Prize and Benesse Prize. Recently, the artists debuted new site-specific commissions for Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, the Menil Collection, Houston, TX, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain.  The Forty Part Motet is on view at Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture, in San Francisco, through January 18, 2016; it is co-presented by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

With Mark Lawson. Hattie Morahan and Dominic Rowan are currently starring in Ibsen's drama A Doll's House, and audiences have been booing Dominic's portrayal of the heroine's chauvinistic husband. The actors discuss handling negative audience reaction, which also happened when Dominic played an egotistical hunk in Penelope Skinner's play, The Village Bike. John Lydon, lead singer of the iconic 1970s punk band The Sex Pistols, says it would be a compliment if their song, God Save the Queen, was included in the Olympic opening ceremony. He explains why the song is not a vicious assault and, as his band PiL release a new album, he talks about his National Treasure status and why retiring is not an option. A third volume of T S Eliot's correspondence has just been published, the product of many years of scholarship - but will such collections continue in the age of email and text message? Professor Steve Connor, from Birkbeck College, London, and Megan Barnard, from the Harry Ransom Centre in Texas, consider the future of the literary letter. A mention in fiction bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey has pushed Thomas Tallis' 40 part motet Spem in Alium to the top of the classical chart. We count down other unexpected cultural hits which have followed an appearance in fiction or film. Producer Nicki Paxman.

Scored for 40 voices, the piece is best sung and heard in the round in order to appreciate an extraordinary sonic experience. Choral conductor Simon Halsey, Michael Morpurgo and others discuss the music's spine-tingling effect on both performers and listeners.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the death row lawyer Clive Stafford Smith. Clive Stafford Smith spent more than 25 years representing people on death row. He's saved hundreds of lives and counts his clients among his friends. He says his work is his calling - one he was drawn to after writing an essay on capital punishment while at school. Initially he thought it was a history essay and was appalled to find the death sentence was still in use. He planned to become a campaigning journalist, but a summer spent meeting prisoners on death row inmates convinced him that he would be able to achieve more by representing them directly. So he trained in law and set up his own legal practice to enable him to do so. He has received several awards for his work including, in 2002, the OBE.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis Book: The Koran (in Arabic and English) Luxury: My computer
