Today, I'm thrilled to share a conversation with someone I've admired from afar for quite some time — Bashar Wali. If you've spent any time in the hospitality space, chances are you've come across Bashar's work — or at least his words. He's the former President and CEO of Provenance Hotels, and today he leads two companies he founded: Practice Hospitality, a management company focused on culturally resonant independent hotels, and This Assembly, a hospitality think tank and incubator building what's next for the industry. What I love most about Bashar is that he's refreshingly candid, wildly insightful, and deeply passionate about this space — not just because it's his career, but because it's in his DNA. In this episode, we get into: Why hospitality is not the same as service — and how even a roadside motel can deliver deeply human moments that a five-star hotel might miss. Why Bashar believes loyalty programs are really just bribery, and what real loyalty actually looks like. How he went from having visited just two countries by age 20 to now traveling like a true nomad — and how that wanderlust has shaped his worldview. Why the world's best operators are not just spreadsheet wizards, but curators of culture who know how to feel what's cool — and create spaces where others can feel it too. And why the soft brand strategy has lost its edge — not because the concept is broken, but because the execution rarely matches the promise. Bashar and I also talk about the role that AI should play in hospitality, the difference between trend-chasing and trend-observing, and what it takes for hotels to stop being sterile, beige boxes and become — in his words — merchants of cool again. This is one of those episodes that had me nodding, laughing, and taking notes at the same time. Bashar is equal parts philosopher and practitioner — and I think you're going to get a ton out of this. Let's dive in. Learn more about Bashar Behind the Stays is brought to you by Journey — a first-of-its-kind loyalty program that brings together an alliance of the world's top independently owned and operated stays and allows travelers to earn points and perks on boutique hotels, vacation rentals, treehouses, ski chalets, glamping experiences and so much more. Your host is Zach Busekrus, Head of the Journey Alliance. If you are a hospitality entrepreneur who has a stay, or a collection of stays with soul, we'd love for you to apply to join our Alliance at journey.com/alliance.

Vision is common. The discipline to execute is rare. Do you have it? In today's Episode, hosts Clark Lunt and David Shaw sit down with Shaye Wali, a former tennis champion turned entrepreneur. Shaye details his extraordinary transition from the world of professional sports to the fast-paced sectors of private lending and software development. As the founder and CEO of Baseline, a revolutionary software platform, he shares the pivotal moments and challenges that shaped his career, offering valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs. Shaye's story is one of focus and resilience. He recounts the immense dedication required to rebuild the tennis program at Tulane University, a testament to his early leadership and determination and desire to travel the road less paved. This experience, he explains, laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Following his passion for finance, he began his career at Morgan Stanley, where he gained a deep understanding of capital markets and real estate investments. However, the entrepreneurial spirit beckoned. Shaye identified a significant gap in the private lending market, an industry often bogged down by inefficiencies and outdated processes. This realization was the catalyst for his move into entrepreneurship. He emphasizes that the ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of real estate and private lending was crucial to his success. This journey culminated in the creation of Baseline, a cutting-edge software designed to streamline the entire private lending process. "We built Baseline to empower lenders," Wali states. "Our goal is to provide a seamless, efficient platform that allows them to manage their operations, from loan origination to servicing, with greater ease and accuracy." The software aims to enhance efficiency, improve data management, and ultimately help private lenders scale their businesses. Shaye's narrative serves as a powerful example of how skills honed in one discipline can be successfully transferred to another. His journey from the tennis court to the boardroom highlights the universal importance of focus, the courage to pivot, and the drive to innovate. For those in the real estate and private lending industries, Shaye Wali's story is not just inspiring; it's a roadmap for navigating the complexities of the modern financial world.Connect with Shaye Wali: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shayewali/ or https://www.baselinesoftware.com/TakeawaysShaye's journey from tennis to tech showcases resilience.Corporate experience at Morgan Stanley shaped the entrepreneurial mindset. The importance of focus in achieving success.Transitioning from employee to entrepreneur requires courage.Private lending offers scalability and flexibility. The evolution of private lending is driven by technology.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Shaye Wali and His Journey03:27 From Pakistan to Florida: The Early Years05:28 Tennis and the Path to College06:58 Building a Tennis Program at Tulane09:46 Transitioning to Morgan Stanley12:00 The Realization of Entrepreneurial Spirit14:38 The Shift to Real Estate17:20 Navigating the Real Estate Market19:48 The Move to Private Lending22:19 Burning the Boats: Taking the Leap24:36 The Evolution into Private Lending30:11 The Journey into Private Lending35:19 Scaling the Private Lending Business40:10 Transitioning to Software Solutions46:11 The Future of Private Lending and Software49:56 Rapid Fire Insights and Final Thoughts58:30 Introduction and Call to Action59:01 Introduction to Burn Your Boats Wealth Podcast59:30 Engagement and Community Building Hosted on Acast. (Disclaimer: The content in this video is intended for educational and informational purposes only)Kyle and Mark break down body cam footage of an officer involved shooting. Details: Fairfax, Virginia — On April 23, 2025, at 2:36 p.m., an officer with the Fairfax County Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane after noticing an expired safety sticker on the front window of a 1999 Toyota Corolla. The car was being driven by 36-year-old Jamal Wali of Fairfax. Wali was argumentative and refused to obey commands. Backup was called and once on scene, Wali unholstered a weapon and fired one shot at through the driver's side window. He attempted to fire a second shot, but it didn't discharge due to a malfunction. The bullet that Wali fired traveled through the bicep of one officer, then through the forearm of another officer before traveling across the street and shattering the back windshield of another parked car. Both officers were treated at a local hospital and later released. A third officer standing on the passenger side of the vehicle discharged his weapon, striking Wali four times. Wali was transported to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced deceased.=================================Subscribe to Shots Fired Podcast Here:➡️ YouTube: @shotsfiredpodcast50 ==============Ways to reach the Shots Fired Podcast Team:==============

He hates Americans, and he just tried to kill two of them. Just days before this lethal encounter, Jamal Wali was pulled over for driving on a suspended license. In 2018 he was charged with eluding and resisting. On April 23 'Today's the day' as Wali engaged with a Fairfax County officer on a stop and intended ultimate escalation against the officers, who ultimately were wounded by Wali. Turning on his own GoPro camera to record the encounter, there is no doubt that law enforcement attempted to de-escalate the situation-- but how will the media spin it? Who are the Awliya of Allah — really? A secret group of forty-something individuals unknown to the world? A status passed down through secret, esoteric knowledge? Or something entirely different? In this lecture, Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble challenges the myths and uncovers the truth about the concept of Awliya — drawn from the Qur'an and authentic Hadith. He explores what it truly means to be a Wali of Allah — and what kind of person attains that status. But more than that, he shows you the path to becoming a true Wali of Allah. Step by step, you'll see the actions that draw a person closer to Allah, deepen their connection with Him, and earn His special love and protection. The idea might seem distant — even out of reach. Bashar, with over three decades of experience in hospitality, shares his passion for creating memorable hotel experiences that transcend the ordinary. Syaifudin Zuhri's book Wali Pitu and Muslim Pilgrimage in Bali, Indonesia: Inventing a Sacred Tradition (Leiden, 2022) is a detailed examination of the recent emergence of the Wali Pitu (“Seven Saints”) tradition in Bali, Indonesia. The study is a multi-sited ethnography of pilgrimage traditions to the grave sites of the Wali Pitu, which is a part of a larger context of rising interest in saint veneration in Indonesia generally, and Muslim religious tourism on the Hindu-majority island of Bali in particular. Themes of the book include saint veneration in historical and contemporary Indonesia, the relationship between religious invention and religious authenticity in Islamic traditions, religious cultures and the economic imperative of the tourism industry, relationships between Hindus and Muslims sharing religious space, and the diversity of approaches to religion and Islamic experience in Southeast Asia. Zuhri's work offers important new perspectives on Indonesian Islam by examining the creation, experience, economy, and contestations of popular Muslim practices that are only growing in their significance. Dr. Syaifudin Zuhri is a lecturer at the State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung (UIN SATU) and a former research fellow at the Berlin Graduate School of Muslim Cultures and Societies.
