Naast haar Nederlandstalige werk schreef ze meerdere Engelstalige poëziebundels: Dark Hour (2018), I Failed to Swoon (2021) en Know Thy Audience (2023).

See it, believe it, do it. Was that Wayne Dyer who said that? Well, today it's often Joe Dispenza saying it based on science. Whether you keep replaying things you don't want to happen, things that you wish were different, things you wish you had done differently OR you think about the future and wonder what is possible, OR you vision what you want and you act AS IF… you will be right. Based on the proven science (I'll link to Joe Dispenza's work) that your brain does not know the difference between an intention tied to a strong emotion and an actual situation happening, you can create and attract exactly what you want. To illustrate this, consider it for yourself. Are you thinking about needing to make more money, feeling like your business is not as successful as you want it to be? Are you thinking about your own weight gain in menopause, your belly fat, or your feelings of inadequacy in some way or another? Do you think about having to work hard all the time to get what you want? Do you think about having to play a role in your family that prevents you from being as successful as you want? Do you think about being limited with opportunities in your current situation? And what is true of your current revenue and business? Does it match? Which came first? Write your future self a letter. Write your future customers, members, or students a letter. My Letter to Members: I'll share a note I recently wrote to my Flipping 50 membership legacy group. That's those that have been members 3 or more years, and a considerable amount since 2016 when I first opened. This was following an outreach specifically to them. I realized in writing it, I've been lucky. I'll share why after I read it. Exactly 10 Years ago from a house on UTAH DRIVE in Ames, Iowa at this time I was about to pay the first check to the university my son would begin in August. I had virtually no revenue. I'd quit everything in January to go 100% in. The regular paychecks stopped coming 3 months later after training my replacements... I was in front of my computer 14-16 hours a day learning, building, and feeling VERY much like a beginner after 30 years of establishing expertise. I hadn't done it online. I had no idea I would be where we are today, having the privilege to meet and work with so many women who INFLUENCE so many lives ... and the health of others. I am grateful for you. You were first... and you are still here. I Failed the Future Fitness and Health Coaching Success Strategy!! Why did I fail? A couple of key statements there!! “I had no idea I would be where we are today” is one clue! I didn't have a specific vision. Not one I was invested in. About 2015 I attended a conference and considered joining my first mastermind… that scared me to death! It was a huge investment. (By the way, since then I've invested over $160,000 in various masterminds alone. That's not including conferences, retreats, programs, and work to surround myself with people who are doing what I want to be next but am not yet. Now, it worked out. And there are some who would say, when you jump - and I did - the net will appear. That's for those of you who are still playing it safe. No judgment if you LIKE right where you are. But if you're clinging to your full-time, regular paycheck and benefits thinking you'll never get there with your own business, it will be absolutely true. Playing it safe isn't what entrepreneurs do. You can, however, be a wonderful and valuable coach. Just be sure that you are very comfortable with yourself… no use of the word “JUST” in reference to what you're doing. Modify your language so you reflect exactly why you do what you do and exactly what success looks like to you!! We women tend to belittle ourselves. I just want you to be honest. Do you really want what you have… or do you want more, something different? Go get it if you do!! Combine Room for MORE with a Vision I may have mentioned this, my son is going to start his own business. That's a risk. I'm excited for him. I'm not nervous for him in terms of success. Maybe in terms of stress and challenges and personal growth that occurs when you go all in, but that's also a part of the excitement. He could settle for working the way he's working…. Or he can take a risk and have potential that is based solely on what he can create. When I brought this up 6 years ago, he resisted. A lot. When I first brought him to a conference for entrepreneurs, he lasted half the day. By lunch, I'd lost him. So as a mom, I'm not going to say I told you so, but hey, I told you so! Do create a vision. Most usually we need to 10x that vision. Someone else said they started wanting to help 1 million people. Then they did, so they had to raise it to 3… But that didn't quite excite me. So I never did it. Nothing with emotion behind it at least. And if you have an empty affirmation or “goal” … without an emotion so strong that you get tears in your eyes… I have witnessed, it won't work. Use both goals/intentions AND room for more. This or better is such a good phrase. Set an intention in a wise way. I will make more than ….. I will enjoy at least # days off a month … while making …… or more I will only work ….. Hours a day and make ….. Or more I will help …. # people and in do it working ….. Hours a week … making …. You don't limit yourself with these. You create an opportunity for what you want and can envision and… so much more! If you have a goal and intention, make it BIGGER. BUT.. you need to have a strong emotion around it! My son not too long ago gave me one. Knowing that he saw me like that was possibly one of the greatest gifts he will ever give me. I've finished a weekend of hiking a mountain for 35 hours. In this episode I want to share everything I have learned and how much of what I learned relates to everyday life. People said many times that I was brave to make this event so public, what if I didn't complete it and I would have to face everyone and say I failed? Here's the thing, this event meant a lot to me. I had no doubt I could do it because of my mindset and training….but, I also did a lot of work on getting ready for disappointment. This is something we have to experience in life. We can't avoid it. I would have been upset if I hadn't completed it, but I had no issue in telling everyone I ‘FAILED' as to me failure isn't a bad thing. I would have done everything I could and not achieving things in life is O.K. This even meant a lot, in the grand scheme of things I was only climbing a mountain. I kept telling myself this a lot, I am just climbing a mountain. Not to belittle what we are doing, as what we do means a lot to us but in the grand scheme of life all we are doing is: Having an exhibition Selling a piece of art in exchange for money Making art Climbing a mountain The next time you get overwhelmed by a task you are completing, tell yourself ‘ I am only doing XYZ' - see if it works. Grab a cuppa and enjoy this episode where I share all my lessons from the mountain.

I recently came across an opinion piece, https://www.marketwatch.com/story/i-failed-at-retirement-how-to-avoid-my-mistakes-11634573287?rss=1&siteid=rss (“I Failed at Retirement: How to Avoid My Mistakes),” by Mike Drak. Mike worked in the banking industry for over 30 years. His wife is an investment advisor. But when he retired, he quickly felt like he had failed to prepare. How did he fail at retirement? I will dissect the five mistakes he said he made in this episode of Best in Wealth! [bctt tweet="In this episode of Best in Wealth, I share 5 retirement mistakes and how to avoid them! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #RetirementPlanning #WealthManagement" username=""] Outline of This Episode [1:27] Why I was unprepared for Fortress Planning Group [5:11] Mistake #1: Focusing on the money [7:34] Mistake #2: Thinking retirement would be easy [10:20] Mistake #3: Believing the retirement commercials [12:26] Mistake #4: Retiring makes your problems disappear [14:39] Mistake #5: Not having something to retire to [17:12] How you can apply these mistakes to your life Mistake #1: Focusing on the money There is a belief that the quality of your retirement depends on how much money you have. While you do need money to fund your retirement, there is something bigger at play. You have to design a life for your retirement years that you will enjoy before you retire. If you retire at 65, you may have 25+ years of quality life left. What are your values? What makes you happy? How can you satisfy those questions in retirement? The one thing I have learned being a business owner and financial planner for eleven years is that it is not all about the money. Build a board of your goals, dreams, and aspirations. Figure out what they are before you retire. Mistake #2: Thinking retirement would be easy Quitting your job is considered one of the ten most stressful life events. You are doing the same thing for years and suddenly you hit the brakes and you are done. The unknown is stressful. When you are at your job and people count on you, you are in a comfortable room. But the moment you leave your working life, you are kicked into the hallway. The hallway is cold, dark, and unfamiliar. But there are a lot of rooms you can decide to enter. You finally walk down the hallway and look through a door. Maybe it does not fit, so you investigate until you find the room that fits perfectly for you. You just have to find it. [bctt tweet="Find out why thinking retirement would be easy is a huge mistake in this episode of Best in Wealth! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #RetirementPlanning #WealthManagement" username=""] Mistake #3: Believing the retirement commercials The narrative is that you can just slow down, play golf, and do whatever you want in your retirement—and you would be satisfied. There is nothing wrong with golfing, vacations, and spending time with your grandkids. For Mike, this was not enough. He was not built to slow down. But retirement does not have to mean slowing down. You just have to find somewhere else to continue your fast-paced life. Mistake #4: Retiring makes your problems disappear I think a lot of us fall into this category. Are you miserable at your job? Are you miserable in other areas of your life? Quitting your job will not make you magically happy. It will not transform who you are if you were not happy before. You will not magically hit the gym, eat healthily, or travel more. Make sure as a family steward that this is not you. Do you have an unhealthy routine right now? Build a new routine that you thrive on. It will take thought and work—so get started before you retire. [bctt tweet="Despite popular belief, retirement doesn't make your problems disappear. I share my thoughts in this episode of Best in Wealth! #wealth #retirement #investing #PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning...
It occurred to me it might be interesting to explain why I chose my title since it is fairly obscure based on the content I talk about on this podcast. In this episode I explain the 4 main reasons I chose it -some more inspiring than others but all still relevant.I've got a lot of wonderful guest speakers in the pipeline I share with you, and I remind you that Recovery Is Never Linear! This is another friendly reminder in addition to Episode 3 "I FAILED!" that the road to recovery is filled with twists and turns and to not beat yourself up.
In this episode I talk about how my instrument checkride went. (I FAILED!)I talk about the oral portion (which I passed), the types of questions I was asked, what helped me to study, the pre-flight portion, the flight portion that I passed and where everything went wrong.Part 2 will come as soon as my next check ride is scheduled and taken.

Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: When Admission of Misjudgment Backfires with Julie Irwin Zimmerman You may have heard of her. Julie Irwin Zimmerman is a writer, editor and journalist whose article in The Atlantic titled "I Failed the Covington Catholic Test" went viral. While Julie displays a high-level of emotional intelligence, her admission of misjudgment ironically backfired. As a society we claim to value honesty and praise those who can admit when they are wrong. However, as you will hear in Julie's experience, our admission isn't always well received by everyone. It was 2014, and I had been hustling trying to build my branding agency for 3 years. From the outside, I looked like I was succeeding. I had a super cool office in Brooklyn, NY, two full-time employees, and the last project I was invited to pitch for was a 20,000 square foot restaurant in Times Square that wanted that cool Brooklyn vibe. I had all the glitz of a successful owner, but behind the scenes, things looked very different. I was networking every day, hoofing it around NYC to meet with whomever would have coffee with me, I was pitching project after project and either not hearing back or just losing them. And my overhead was high. By March 2014, we had maxed out all of our credit cards, were overdrawn on our bank accounts, and had no idea how we were going to make payroll in two weeks. I was desperately trying to figure out how to bring money in. Not only did we need money to live, but we needed to pay back this $40,000 we now owed. Tell the prospects with proposals that we would bargain with them? Network… MORE? Just cry in the corner with my fingers crossed that one of these proposals would close in the next week and pay a deposit? And if none those things worked, I assumed the only option left would be to give up, admit that I FAILED to all my friends and family, and get a regular job. I was working SO hard to get clients and busting my butt 24/7 to be at the beck and call the few clients we had, so why couldn’t my business at least support itself? I had the best intentions, I had done my homework, read every book, studied other success stories, pounded the pavement networking, took courses, and was willing to work round the clock on my business while giving my all to deliver for my clients… I was doing everything that every expert, guru, mentor, and colleague had recommended. I had even thrown money at my problems by hiring other service providers to solve them for me and not only did that not work either, but it also cost me more money I didn’t have. But despite all my knowledge, experience, and effort, none of it was showing up in my bank account. It felt unfair. I was depressed and felt more and more like a failure. And one night, while having dinner with my husband and business partner Steve, I was in a catatonic daze over the crushing burden of my failing business while he was just chatting along as if everything was fine, making me even more anxious! Just as my anxiety was turning to rage, the adrenaline must have heightened my senses and I snapped out of my failure coma to hear him say “...why don’t we just let the employees go?” For all my butt busting and desperate efforts, I am embarrassed to admit that I had not even considered that as one of my options and that was a wake-up call. Because I was trying to create an agency, a big business that looked like what I imagined success was, in my mind, letting our employees go would be failure and the end of my business. Because I was on a trajectory of building an agency, I refused to entertain any ideas that felt like backtracking and saw any of my efforts that didn’t achieve that goal as failures. I was so set on a specific idea of what a successful business looked like, that I was actually entertaining closing our business to get a normal job instead of entertaining the idea of running a different kind of business. Now Steve had my attention and he was saying more great stuff… he said we had built a LOT of value in our business, had a lot of experience, great work to show and happy, satisfied clients. We weren't at a dead end, we actually had tons of options of what we could do with what we had created and achieved. He forced me to entertain the idea that there were infinite options available to us, and just because they were different from what I had originally planned, didn’t mean they were inferior. My lightbulb not only went off – it popped. A huuuge weight had been lifted off of me and I was able to see my business with a ruthless, cutting clarity that was unencumbered by my previous fears of failing (because I already had!). Now I was free to do ANYTHING. Immediately, my new terminator vision was assessing my business problems. Fact: We couldn’t afford the employees right now and hadn’t been able to for some time, hence the debt, so keeping them was no longer an option. I had been avoiding that fact for months. The second I accepted it, relief washed over me. We won’t need to find $8,000 for them this month. WOW. I had just made $8,000 in a moment of clarity. I’m gonna date myself here but you know that game Minesweeper? Where you’re clicking the boxes without clicking the mines? And every once in a while you click an empty box and the whole area opens up all at once? That’s what this was like. Everything broke open for me. THAT was the moment I became the boss of my business & my whole demeanor changed We started looking at our business as a clean slate and started brainstorming like crazy all the possible ideas of what we could do next. We started listing all the skills and assets we had and how to make money off them. We questioned why we had done everything the way we had, and why we felt we had to do it that way. We were EXCITED for the first time in a long time. It was like when we first started our business and anything was possible again. We were no longer desperately trying to do what we thought we had to succeed. We were asking ourselves what we really wanted out of our business and how we could structure it to get it. In that MOMENT, I went from being at the mercy of my business and the situation I was in, to stepping up and showing my business who’s boss. Before that moment... I thought MONEY was my biggest problem. So I thought if I just had more money, more clients, more work, things would be better. Before that moment... I blamed all the people I was pitching for my business’ problems. They would take our proposals and then end up hiring other, less expensive companies... how could I compete with that?! So I thought they’re just ignorant of the value of my services. Before that moment... I thought I was doing the best I could at marketing my business. I was networking like a maniac. I was posting on Facebook, blogging, trying to speak at events. Nothing I was trying was bringing me enough business, so I thought marketing doesn’t really work. Before that moment... I thought clients were really difficult and annoying. They always wanted more, more, more, and never wanted to pay what the work was worth (and almost never on time). So I thought clients suck and there’s nothing I can do about it However, after my breakthrough moment, I could see how all these beliefs weren’t true and had been limiting my ability to succeed. I now realized there were always, so many more possibilities available to me that I had never even considered. And I had the power to whip my business into exactly what I wanted it to be. And so I did. Over the next few months… I went from being oppressed by my business to leading it. I went from being stuck in a whole bunch of assumptions and stories that were holding me back, to being free to entertain, create, and experiment with new ways to run my business. I also realized that it could go any number of ways and a lot of those possibilities started to look way more attractive than my original plan of building a big agency with lots of employees. In the 12 months that followed we changed our entire strategy and made $500,000 selling our branding services, and we did it without the employees while working less than we had before. Not just that, but every year since we continued to make more and work less than the previous year. Each year we set new goals for how we want to live and work backward from those goals to mold our business to support the lifestyle we want. The extra income and time also created space to grow my business in other ways. I wrote and marketed a best selling book, I became a speaker, I’ve written hundreds of articles on my blog and Forbes column, I learned how to build, market and successfully sell multiple online courses, and we’ve traveled to over 30 cities and countries, sometimes taking months off at a time for adventures. All while working less than 25 hours a week. That didn’t just happen. It happened because I MADE IT happen. You see, Showing your business who’s boss all starts with OWNERSHIP. And no, I don't mean that you own your business. I mean you show up and own your shit in your business. Everything I’ve accomplished since my business “rock-bottom” moment happened because I started owning mine, and showing my business who’s boss. I started taking responsibility for everything that was happening, starting with why clients were happily asking for proposals... and then hiring others who were cheaper. I started owning that it wasn’t that the clients that were cheap, it was us. We either weren’t pitching the right people, we weren’t making a good enough case for them to hire us, or both. I started owning that more money wasn’t going to solve our business problems. In those moments of desperation, had we closed a client like I desperately thought I needed, we would have been in the same situation a month later. Another client, some more money… they weren’t going to fix the FUNDAMENTAL problems in our business. I started owning that my fear of failure, or even worse, my fear of looking like a failure, was blinding me to all the opportunities in front of me. I was so concerned with being successful according to other people’s definition of success, that I didn’t even know what success really meant for ME! I finally realized that I would never be successful until I figured that out. I started owning that I had been operating my business for the past few years by trying things, and then crossing my fingers hoping they would work. When they didn’t work I would just throw up my hands and say “oh well, it didn’t work” and then move on to the next option, instead of trying again until I MADE it work. I started owning that all the mistakes I had made were not mistakes, they were actually HUGE, VALUABLE lessons that could teach me how to build a really strong business, if I would only LISTEN. I started owning that if I wanted to be a business owner, I needed to operate like a business owner. That means understanding that the service you provide is the product, NOT the business. The business is the machine: the brand, money, the process, the marketing, and the sales. If I wanted to show my business who was boss, I needed to be the boss of a business and not just try to hock our services to whomever was willing to pay for them. Shifting from being at the mercy of my business to showing it who’s boss every day since then, has been THE difference between constantly hustling while fearful of things not working, to feeling like I can hold my entire business in my hand, and manipulate it to do what I want. And as what I want evolves and changes, I can use my business to fulfill those new goals. How would you feel if you had that kind of power and control over your business? If you felt like you could use it as a tool to get what you want, instead of this hungry beast that you are constantly trying to feed? How could you use your business to both fulfill you, AND enjoy your life more? Steve helped switch the light on for me that night, and if you let me, I’m going to switch that light on for you, and every service expert who is fed up with struggling to get the results they want from their business. It’s about how you show up each day, looking for possibilities and opportunities where others see problems and challenges. It’s about taking ownership so you can make decisions from a place of power and confidence. It’s about showing up ready to kick ass and take names like the boss you were meant to be. If you want more of that in your business, then I started this podcast to inspire you to start showing your business who’s boss.
In this Monday with Michael episode, I share how starting a blog four years ago had a domino effect and led me to be a successful freelance writer. I Failed at Blogging, But Found Success as a Freelance Writer When I started my blog in 2016, I realized quickly that I didn’t know how to build a tribe to follow it and also how to create sustainable revenue streams to keep it financially afloat. This is not a story of failure though, but one of success as I pivoted my ‘failed’ blog into becoming a successful freelance writer. Freelance writing has had a massive role in my life. I was able to 10x my monthly income from 650 bucks to 6,500 bucks in one year while only working part time. In 2019, I was able to double my income and never go back to a nine to five. All this never would have happened if I had never started that blog. 'Leap and the Net Will Appear' My mentor, James Wedmore, said that quote and it resonates true. Sometimes you have to have active faith in yourself. Sometimes you have to believe in yourself, even if you don’t really know what’s going to happen out there, even if it feels terrifying to your mind and you’re thinking, “Whoa, this is way out of my comfort zone”. Blogging was my first step. It didn’t work out the way I thought it would; but it led me to become a published author, successful freelance writer, podcaster and even write and do voice over for a video that went viral on YouTube. When you bet on yourself and really put yourself out there and say, “Hey, you know what? I can do this”. Some pretty incredible things will happen.

This past weekend I took on the final BIG run I’d be doing before the Spartan Ultra race hits in just a few more weeks As much as it pains me to say it, I FAILED. I failed to complete the workout I had planned. I had to call it quits after mile 13 due to some servers quad cramps. They were something nasty. Here was the set up... 2 Mile Run 200m Sandbag Carry 4 Mile Run 30 Pull Ups 6 Mile Run 30 Burpees 4 Mile Run - STOPPED AFTER ONE MILE 200m Bucket Carry 2 Mile Run Everything was feeling great until after the 30 Burpees I had some Goo’s and a few swigs of water then headed back out for the 2nd 4 mile run. Then... BOOM! My right quad locked up. It locked up so bad I couldn’t even bend my damn leg! LOL I had to sit down in someone’s front yard. I pounded on it with my fist a bit to get it to loosen up, but NOTHING… So I got up and started to hobble back down the hill I just ran up looking like a 87 year old man. After about 50 yards or so it finally loosened up and I could actually re-bend my knee. I continued to walk it off a bit and gave it another go. Made it about 400m and then my left calf decided to lock up right as my right quad locked up again only this time, it was the full quad and my right groin. I was DONE. No sense in trying to push through it this week as it’ll only push my prep back even more. I felt defeated and I felt like a FAILURE. BUT, I’m NOT a FAILURE… This is just a small bump in the road. And instead of beating myself up for it too much, I’m using this as a very important LESSON. The lesson? I got a lot of them from this session actually… #1 - HYDRATE SMARTER I drink enough water, but I need to make sure I’m getting in the minerals I need as well, mainly magnesium. Time to start supplementing with an actual magnesium pill. #2 - PICKLE JUICE Last week I drank some pickle juice the night before and morning of my training. Didn’t feel even the slightest twinge last week so I know that helped. This week, I skipped it to see how I’d feel. #3 - NO COFFEE Last week i skipped the coffee. This week, I had a cup and a half of coffee which I now know is a NO-NO. Coffee is great, but it will dehydrate you and if I need to be hydrated, can’t have it. I also had coffee before my race in Colorado and cramped up then as well. #4 - Chews and Goo’s I tested out a few different Goo’s and Chew’s for the big race. I’ll need to have some quick sources of energy when I hit the ULTRA. I didn’t take any sort of FUEL in until after I hit the first 4 mile run, I know I need to fuel up a bit earlier to ensure I stay energized. Also, the EXTEND chews I tried were plain NASTY. No-go on those when I hit the ULTRA. #5 - FASTING Last week I hit the 15 mile run up much earlier in the day so I fasted. I actually felt MUCH better last week VS this week after having a good-sized breakfast earlier. When I hit the ULTRA, I’ll be starting off even earlier so I’ll plan to hit it fasted as well. That means the meal I have the night before will need to be nice and hearty :) Again… LOTS of lessons to be learned from my FAILURE. But it’s just like any failure… Look at it as a LESSON and use it for good. OR… Take it as a negative and just see it as a loss. You'll always grow and get much better looking for the LESSONS.

In this, the final episode of season 1, I’ll be talking about one of the most powerful weapons in the productivity-ists arsenal GOAL SETTING. Before I go into that though, last week’s episode introduced 5 free productivity apps which I do encourage you to try. I chose to highlight 5 but I could probably have found 25 if I’d put my mind to it. For every great productivity app though there are 100 more that will steal your time and slow you down and distract you, and even with productivity apps you can get too much of a good thing. One of the very best productivity tips I can offer is to switch your phone off every now and again. Try and form the habit (listen to episode 13 for advice on that one) of restricting your phone use for an hour before you go to bed and an hour after you wake up. This will allow you to focus on all the things you should be doing instead of checking Facebook, or twitter, or getting lost in clickbait, watching YouTube vidoes or opening up your work email. The American motivational speaker Daymond John believes that “the last thing I read at night will likely manifest when I'm sleeping. You become what you think about the most.” Unquote… So take a bit of time out to relax and enjoy life while you can, avoid the phone at night. If you banish the phone form your bedroom in fact you’ll sleep better as a result. Oh and if you use your phone as an alarm, as I often do myself, putting it in another room will give you very good reason to get out of bed sharpish the next morning. Now with Season 2 coming up soon, I’m very interested in including your thoughts and comments within it. I’d love to hear what productivity techniques you are adopting or what matters that you are struggling with out there. You can send me your thoughts via the contact page at filmproproductivity.com or by catching me on Twitter @filmproprodpod. Book Recommendation: Your Best Year Yet! Without dreams and goals there is no living, only merely existing, and that is not why we are here.” Unquote. When I first set out to create this podcast and I know I’ve referred to it before here - but I FAILED. I would say I failed because I was unspecific and uncertain in what I wanted to do. More recently though I dusted myself down and I tried again, and I did a few things differently. Firstly - I knew EXACTLY WHAT SORT OF PODCAST I WANTED TO MAKE, and… Secondly - I GAVE MYSELF A DEADLINE, and I have to say that date that you know is looming ever closer, really puts a rocket up your backside when it comes to drive. Next - When I assessed the goal I was trying to achieve I created a tactical action plan to achieve it, and I stuck to it. And this endeavour has not been easy at all. It’s been far more costly than I’d thought possible, the learning curve has been sharper than I’d imagined and, and it’s taken far more time too. Researching and recording a single episode doesn’t take just a few hours – it takes days… but I did it anyway. YES - This is a vastly time-consuming thing for me, but the last main reason that I think that I have succeeded is because – well - I WANT TO - because I absolutely believe that it WILL HELP creatives, filmmakers, and other film professionals to move toward a BETTER, HAPPIER LIFE, and that in turn gives me great satisfaction. THE LESSON Have you thought about what you want to be doing in five years' time? Are you clear about what your main objective at work is at the moment? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of today? The world renowned motivational speaker and life coach Tony Robbins says that “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” – I’ve left the topic of goal setting till now as it is such an important part of the productivity landscape that it deserves its place in the final episode of the series. Goals are essential, and whether they are large or small, daily, weekly, hourly or for life - without them we tend to meander along and settle for where we are. With New Year just around the corner, and a whole load of productivity lessons behind us, I figured this would be the ideal time to delve into the topic. I covered it to some extent in episode 11, THE TWELVE WEEK YEAR, but let’s look a little bit closer. The SMART acronym which is also known as the 5 GOLDEN RULES OF GOAL SETTING is where we will begin. SMART translates to: · SPECIFIC. · MEASURABLE. · ATTAINABLE. · RELEVANT. · TIME BOUND. By SPECIFIC we of course mean that your goals must be clear and well defined. Without a precise direction to travel in, you will get lost trying to pin down your vague, unspecific and ever changing goals - and that will simply mislead you and short circuit your endeavour. By defining precisely where you want to end up, you have much more realistic chance of getting there. An example of a specific goal might be, to write a first draft of your new film by a date exactly 6 weeks from today. That goal in turn could be part of a larger specific life goal. And your goals MUST also be MEASURABLE. Unless you are precise about each element of the goal, and include dates, potential costs etc then you will find it difficult to measure the degree of your success. If your goal is simply defined as "To lose weight" how will you know when you have been successful? Without a way to measure your success you miss out on the opportunity to celebrate your win. The SMART acronym says that you MUST also set ATTAINABLE Goals. In Episode 13 I talked about Stephen Guises MINI HABITS. In that system he aims to ensure that the habits you set out to create are achievable as the damage caused by failure, can be very destructive to your will power – your willingness to try again. But Stephen Guise was talking about HABITS and that’s NOT what this episode is about. We are talking about GOALS – And although you can certainly aim small and achieve the little wins, the goals I encourage you to consider should make you want to "raise the bar" and aim for greatness. I think I have probably use this Peter Drucker quote before but it’s a very important point - He said that “Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all.” I mention this as these goals MUST be RELEVANT to the direction YOU WANT YOUR LIFE AND CAREER TO TAKE. You simply cannot allow yourself to get distracted by the unimportant. You must engage your Higher Level Thinking and narrow down your focus. If you don’t you will waste your time and mental energy on the unimportant. As Bruce Lee once said - “The SUCCESSFUL WARRIOR is the AVERAGE MAN, with LASER-LIKE FOCUS.” Finally your goals must be TIME ORIENTED. So set a deadline for the specific goal: for next week, in three months, or six months. Setting an end point for the goal gives you a clear target to achieve. Remember Parkinson’s Law though - "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". – Make your time frames realistic but don’t let them be too flabby. Push yourself a little. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and that gives you drive. Put it in WRITING I’ll follow up the SMART system by urging you to write your goals down. MINDTOOLS.com makes this point a follows. “The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real and tangible. You have no excuse for forgetting about it.” As you write, Mindtools tells you to use the word "will" instead of "would like to" or "might." For example, "I will produce the pilot episode of my next series by the 1st of February next year” not "I would like to produce the pilot episode of my next series by the 1st of February next year " The first goal statement has power and you can "see" yourself shooting that episode, the second lacks passion and gives you an excuse if you get sidetracked.” They also suggest that you write yourself a TO-DO LIST that has your goals written at the top of it. You can do that in the TO-DOIST app I mentioned last week btw. You can create titles for each list, and they can be your goals. I’d add to this that when you set goals for yourself, it is important that they motivate you, that they are important to you, and that there is some value to you in achieving them. If you have no interest in the outcome then the chances of you putting in the work to achieve these goals are very low. As Elon Musk said though, “If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it.” Can I suggest too that you build in reminders to keep yourself on track, and make regular check-ins to review your goals – put them in your diary – I have them in my Google calendar app and they pop up every 6 months. Sometimes perhaps through changes in circumstance you may even alter your long term goals along the way – that’s perfectly fine – just be sure to re-define the new goals and keep on moving. Your GREATER GOAL may remain similar over the long term, but your strategic action plan to achieve it might change significantly. That’s just life. It’s OK. SUMMING UP I hope that this episode has been helpful because without goals you will undoubtedly lack focus and direction. I’d now like you to consider your GREATER LIFE GOALS. These are the larger outcomes you will achieve when you dedicate YOUR TIME and YOUR THOUGHTS and YOUR PASSION to reach them. Tony Robbins sets out three steps to setting these larger goals. You may want to re-listen to this section when you aren’t busy, and have a pen in hand. · In Step 1 he says: Take 6 minutes and brainstorm a list of anything you’d like to achieve, create, do, have, give and/or experience in the next 20 years. Write as many things down as fast as you can in this time. · In Step 2 he asks you to go back through your list and write 1, 3, 5, 10 or 20 years next to each goal to indicate how long it will take to achieve them. You have a minute and a half to get this done, so be quick and go with your gut. · In Step 3 he asks you to then review your list. Choose your top four 1-year goals. These are goals that make you really excited. Write a paragraph for each goal explaining why you will absolutely achieve this goal within the next 12 months. This should take you about 15-20 minutes total. Now, if you have the chance to share what you’ve written down with a friend, family member or other person you trust, do so. If not, just say them out loud to yourself. Tony Robbins is at the top of his game in this field and it’s for good reason - I’ll put some links to him in the show notes. Now achieving these goals won’t always be easy - Booker T. Washington said that “You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you have to overcome to reach your goals.” So things will get tough - but goal setting will allow you to navigate the correct path and provide you with a benchmark for determining whether you are actually getting there. I’ll finish up now with the words of CS LEWIS “You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.” Having goals is for everyone, it’s not just a game for the young. In whatever path you take and whatever goal you set out to conquer I wish you well. CALL TO ACTION So that is now the end of series 1. I encourage you to look back over the previous episodes and see if there’s anything that you missed. This season has been kinda structured to help those that are feeling overwhelmed in their life and work, and much of it has been aimed at stemming the flow of lost time and energy. In episode 1, I introduced the concept of HIGH LEVEL THINKING, and the principle of working ON your life and career at the same time that you find yourself living and working IN it. By now, I hope that this concept has had a bit of an impact on you and that you have been able to, at least in part, take back control of your life. In season 2, I’ll continue to introduce even more productivity topics. I’ve got a good idea of where I’m heading with it, but I’d love to include YOUR thoughts and comments within it. If you want to help, please let me know what you are struggling with by leaving short voicemail message on the speakpipe recorder on the filmproproductivity.com contact page. You can always send a written message but if you leave a voicemail I may include it in future episodes. ENDING I feel that before I go I should explain perhaps why I’ve chosen the seasonal format. That fact is that in order for me to avoid my own OVERWHELM, and to allow me to go and SHOOT my OWN new CREATIVE PROJECTS, I just can’t commit to delivering an episode of this show every week of the year. And it’s a choice I made before I started. My SPARE time, my days off between paid fight contracts or the stolen hours on shoot days when I find myself hanging about waiting to be called to set, when I’ not writing risk assessments, is currently dedicated to researching and writing these episodes. I now HAVE to commit these lumps of spare time to a DIFFERENT creative project. As if I did say yes to releasing a new episode EVERY week, I’d be saying NO many other opportunities. But don’t worry – I will be back. I will return in just a few months with a new 12 episode season. Wow, it’s been almost two months since I did an episode. Many apologies. This was the one thing people told me NOT to do; always be consistent. And….I FAILED! Well, on this episode you get a little insight into what I’ve been going through in my life and why I’ve been away. Just like life for everyone, my journey comes with ups and downs. I recently found out I was diagnosed with gout and have had a really tough time getting to the “acceptance” phase of the disease. I know I’m being melodramatic about the whole thing but it definitely impacted me. Dare I say…depressed me. But, I’m doing something about it. That something is getting a show favorite, Rachael McBride, involved. You remember her right? If not, check out my interview with her. She’s got me drowning in water and vegetables, but it’s to save my life so it’s cool. I’m also updating my format. I realized the long interviews were not doing my message justice, especially once a month. SO…with a renewal in my dedication, I am now committing to releasing one episode a week. That day is still undecided, but it will either be Wednesday or Thursday. I’ll let you know. Finally, I want your input on the new segment of mine. It’s tentatively called “memes that annoy me.” Also, if you have a better referral for the title, I’m all ears. This will be a section here we breakdown memes, inspirational pictures, and general internet anecdotes that tend to get passed around on social media sites with a psychological perspective. I need your help, so please send me whatever you got and I’ll choose one per episode. Thanks for your support, please spread the word, and as always remember to feed your mental health.
