Next, weather in the Mid-South can be on occasion challenging at best. One man who can explain it better than many is relatively new to the area but we don't know much about him. Andrew Humphrey, Fox 13 Chief Meteorologist joins me for a brief look at his background and what he thinks about the Bluff city. I would like to thank Diane Steinberg Lewis for trusting me to help bring forth her mother's and her legacy in the African American community. We interviewed Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg's (1930 – 2000) daughter about their families' legendary past and how they made History. The Queen was the first African American Female to own her own radio station. We will dedicate a whole week to this families legecy. They are truly “Threads in our Fabric.” Martha Jean "The Queen" Steinberg, a black radio pioneer and scholar, helped set the guidelines and standards for black radio in America. "The Queen" started her radio career in 1954 at WDIA, in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1963, radio station WCHB in Inkster, Michigan invited her to the Detroit area where she became an instant success. In 1982, Steinberg went to WQBH radio as vice president and general manager. Fourteen years later, Steinberg purchased WQBH (Queen's Broadcasting Corporation) and became president and general manager. She was the first African American female to own a radio station. Steinberg contributed greatly to the development of black radio. She was one of four black radio pioneers at the New York City Museum of Television and Radio's first-ever seminar on "Black Radio, Yesterday and Today." She was featured in the Radio America series "Passing It On: Voices from Black America's Past," broadcast in 1995. She narrated the documentary on Barry Gordy and the early years of the Motown Sound, entitled "The Music & The Story," for The Henry Ford. She continued to host her noontime “Inspirations with the Queen” broadcasts on WQBH until two weeks before her death. Steinberg was inducted into the prestigious State of Michigan Black Women's Hall of Fame at the Detroit Historical Museum in 1993 and she was featured in Radio Smithsonian's "Black Radio: Telling it Like it Was." In 1998 she was inducted into the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Steinberg received a number of awards for her outstanding achievements. The School of Social Work, Alumni Association, Wayne State University presented her with the U.S. Citizen of the Year award for her extraordinary contributions to the community. She also received the Michiganian of the Year award in 1996, an award recommended by Detroit newspaper readers and news staffs in recognition of contributions to the community and to the betterment of life in Michigan. Martha Jean Steinberg was the single mother of three daughters, all of whom graduated from college and into successful careers. She was also a minister and founder of the nondenominational Order of the Fisherman Ministry. She was a founding partner for the MGM-Grand Casino in Detroit. Martha Jean "The Queen" Steinberg was a radio legend an inspiration and a powerful voice for peace, progress, prosperity and goodwill toward all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/momentsofgrace/support

Unearthed: Memphis

This episode is about Firsts in Memphis. It occurred to me, after several tours of our favorite place, Elmwood Cemetery, that our city has numerous things that happened for the first time, here in our city. We’re going to talk about a few of them today. We’ll revisit this topic periodically, we’ve got a few more on the list, but if you have any suggestions, of course, please let us know! “We are not trying to prove we can get along in a world without men. We are simply trying to prove that when a group of women make up their collective minds that they are going to do something successfully, no force on earth can keep them from it.” -Dorothy Abbott, Assistant Manager and Program Director of WHER.  This quote was from the program director of the first all female radio station.   WHER was started in 1955 by none other than Sam Phillips, the man behind helping to make Elvis famous. Phillips used the money he received from selling Elvis’ recording contract to start the station. According to Philips, he created the station from his love of radio and his curiosity of hearing women’s voices on the air. Women ran the entire operation - everything from being on air personalities to engineering their programs. Phillips' wife, Becky, was one of the first djs. He drew women from all over the Memphis area, most who had no experience in radio. He employed models, actresses, telephone operators, and housewives, just to name a few. WHER was recorded and broadcast out of the third ever Holiday Inn (another Memphis first we will discuss in a moment), in a studio named the Doll Bin. It was decorated all pink and girly. The djs delivered news and played music on the air, conducted interviews with local celebrities, created and sold commercials, produced and directed the programming and ran the control boards. The radio station ran from 1955-1973. WHER inspired women everywhere to start similar stations.   In sticking with the radio theme, Memphis is also home to the first radio station programmed for African Americans with African American on-air personalities. WDIA was originally created in 1947 as a country, western, and light pop station, and it failed. The owners of the station, John Pepper and Bert Ferguson, both white, decided to take the station in another direction. They hired Nat G. Williams, a teacher at Booker T. Washington High School, to be the DJ of the Tan Town Jubilee, the first program to appeal to black listeners. This new show exploded and the station switched formats to an all black programming station. It became the number one station in Memphis.   WDIA was known as the “Starmaking Station”. Many musical legends, such as BB King and Rufus Thomas, got their start at WDIA. King started out hosting a 15min show and then moved on to hosting a full afternoon program. It was during his show that the station got their first major advertiser. BB King credits the station for helping to launch his career. By 1954, WDIA increased its power to 50,000 watts making it possible to be heard from the Missouri bootheel to the Gulf Coast.  Also, in 1954, the station created the Goodwill Fund. Originally it was designed to transport disabled African American children to school and then later it grew to be an organization that offered college scholarships, established boys clubs, provided little league teams, and helped provide low cost supplemental housing. Until 1972, the station management had been an integrated one, which was pretty uncommon for the time, but that year, Chuck Scruggs was promoted to general manager. He became the first black general manager at the station. Mr. Scruggs did more than just run a number one radio station, he helped preserve one of Memphis’s historic sites, the Lorraine Motel. When it was in danger of being torn down, he donated the money to save it and helped create the Civil Right Museum. WDIA, the heart and soul of Memphis, is still running today,

We're getting inspections, in a timely manner. Jeff says, "We're currently working on,  projects that were funded a long time ago and their deadline stands. Memphis Business Academy in Memphis Rise Middle School.  We're going to work as safely as we can, but, the deadline remains". Our supply chain for  construction materials is  tremendously long, drywall from Canada, HVAC from Mexico fire alarm panels assembled in Mexico, but the products come from China, Canada, even the U S where they're assembled in Mexico and then shipped back to the U S so it's a bit of a tangled web to try to untangle  over the time. If you keep the mindset of buying American on a long enough timeline, it can hopefully make a difference. Providing different avenues to support local businesses, subcontractors and USA based companies as possible.Closing thought from Jeff on Leadership challenges, opportunities, lessons.... There is no more work life balance. It's work life integration.  For me, I think hitting the bottom line and getting that result that my clients need and want and the information my team needs to get the job done that outpaces any old mentalities of the old world of eight to five, you know, why aren't you busy?  I've told my team,  if it's critical, if it's urgent and important, do it now. If it's neither  urgent nor important, find out why. Find out why that keeps landing on your inbox or on your desk. How can we get rid of the minutia that doesn't matter and focus on what does. The other thing I would lean on would be, what the great UCLA basketball coach John Wooden once said, "do not let what you cannot control interfere with what you can control". Learn more:  https://www.metro-gc.com/

Born to sharecroppers in Batesville, MS, my radio colleague Bobby O'Jay walks us through his 47 years in the radio industry. After seeing his cousin Melvin Jones come home in a fancy ride in 1965 after sharing he was on the radio, Bobby immediately began practicing his radio voice. His first chance was presented in 1972 at the age of 18 when he received a phone call for his first gig in Montgomery, AL. From that moment, Bobby's voice was heard in numerous markets such as Milwaukee, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and most currently Memphis. He tells plenty of stories of his experiences in those cities including encounters with colorful decision makers, being hired and fired, and ultimately making a plethora of good and bad decisions. One of the most pivotal moments Mr. O'Jay shared was when he finally landed in Memphis at WDIA and made the choice to enter a 30 day program at St. Joseph's for rehab in 1985. He never used drugs or drank since. He's received countless accolades over the years for his contribution to the radio industry and states that many of his opportunities were a "Calling from God." Bobby also shares the devastation of losing his wife Sharon and the advice she gave him before transitioning in regards to dating. What I found very intriguing about Bobby is that he maintains his great health mainly due to a very special plant based diet that he practices religiously. Bobby also offers advice to those interested in the radio business and where he sees his career going forward. Enjoy.

I've met my share of radio personalities over the years but no one quite like Stan Bell. Since day one he's been a class act and standout professional. Although his journey began many years ago in North Memphis, he has come full circle in many areas of his life. His very first bite of the broadcasting bug started as a WDIA teenage reporter while attending Northside at the age of 16. Years later he was affectionately known as "SB Superstar Bell" on the airwaves at UT Martin. But his dream came true in 1986 on Mother's Day when he cracked the mic at his beloved K97FM. It was there where he etched his trademark feature with the "Roll Call." Nowadays, you can find Stan during the "drive-time" from 2p-7p on V101.1FM and nightly on 1070 WDIA. Take a listen to episode 81 with the legendary Stan Bell to find out what happened in between these wonderful milestones.

Once in the role of General Contractor, Metro launched into various commercial projects of all shapes and sizes across the Mid-South, and has not slowed down since. Throughout the years Metro has been involved in Memphis' most recognizable developments and historical projects including renovations of the Peabody Hotel, redevelopment of the Peabody Place Historic Block, constructing the Fire Museum of Memphis, remodeling the historic WDIA building and more. Quality craftsmanship and attention to detail has helped Metro secure a reputation of being the construction company for historic renovations. Whether Metro is on the job for FedEx, renovating the Lipscomb & Pitts Building or working for any of the thousands of customers over the last three decades, we continue to surpass expectations every time. WDIA: USA's First Black Radio Station

Memphis Type History: The Podcast

In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Caitlin talks about WDIA, the first all-Black radio station in the U.S.A. We learn about how the transformation of this station into all-black programming and on-air talent exposed some of the best local talent to become major music icons we recognize today.   On June 7, 1947, WDIA transmitted onto the radio waves for the first time from its 2074 Union Avenue studio... one of just six Memphis radio stations at that time! Owned by John Pepper and Bert Ferguson, two white guys, the station played pop and country western music… and it headed towards bankruptcy very quickly. However, in October of 1948, they hired high school teacher and columnist Nat D. Williams, who started the first radio show for black listeners in the country on WDIA and saved the station. Williams' show, Tan Town Jubilee, catapulted WDIA to 2nd most popular radio station in Memphis. The station then became the TOP station in Memphis after switching to all-black programming and all-black on-air talent. In 1954, the station increased to 50,000 watts, which meant it reached into the MS Delta, a bit of Missouri, and down to the Gulf Coast… which reached the ears of 10% of the black population in the US at that time. The station would go on to be known as the Starmaker Station because of the amount of exposure it provided local talent. One thing that was really instrumental in the station’s success was that Williams was friends with Rufus Thomas, and got him onto the station… Thomas actually kept up his show until his death in 2001. Their ties to Beale Street got BB King’s career off to a start on the station as well as many other musicians. After Beale began declining, WDIA was really a big source of musical influence (even inspiring good ol’ Elvis Presley). Another famous show on the station was called Goodwill. It covered civic news, missing children announcements, and raised money for community projects like scholarships, a bus for disabled kids, little league teams, and an orphanage, to name a few. The show turned into big fundraisers hosted by the WDIA DJ’s called the Goodwill Revue and the Starlight Revue. Big time local and national musicians like BB King, Rufus Thomas, Bobby “Blue” Bland, the Spirit of Memphis, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, and Ray Charles performed for free. The local black community received about $100,000 a year from all of the Goodwill efforts. Even though black talent and programming made WDIA so popular, and the staff was integrated in 1950 (rare for the South), it wasn’t until 1972 that Chuck Scruggs became the first black general manager and vice president. Under his 12-year service, the station helped raise money to preserve the Lorraine Motel and create the National Civil Rights Museum, and participated in the revitalization of Beale Street and the creation of the Stax Museum.
