Retired U.S. Navy SEAL Senior Chief Michael “Fulli” Fullilove is the Operations Director of DeliverFund, a non-profit dedicated to the elimination of human trafficking. Fulli has 20 years of experience operating as a SEAL across multiple SEAL Teams. He led cross functional teams conducting complex special operations throughout the Middle East. He has worked in a variety of project and program management positions working across cultures to achieve operational goals, and spent five years at a Naval Special Warfare command where he was responsible for combining multi-intelligence disciplines with special operations expertise to defeat hostile networks. | Over the course of his career Mike deployed 3 times to Iraq, twice to Afghanistan, and once to Kosovo, in addition to numerous other locations. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, The Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous specific commendation medals. During his deployments, he worked with senior level foreign government leadership and focused on countering violent extremist organizations, human and physical infrastructure development for operational purposes, and personnel recovery. Following retirement, he provided operational consultant services to military, government and faith-based clients. 4:17 I'm going to introduce our topic today of human trafficking with an expert in the field and a current active champion in the field of human trafficking. 6:05 I went back to the teams where I was part of a unit specialized in targeting and operations and Intelligence Fusion. And really what we're doing was focusing on violent extremist networks, and really trying to take a network approach as opposed to playing whack a mole, which, up to that point, you know, the military is very good, you kill one bomb maker, and the next one builds plays. 10:58 Traffickers only look at their victims as commodities, they are not viewed as humans, they are not viewed as viable beings with a life of soul or anything else, they are simply a can of soup. 16:21 And it's something that I think is alarming for a lot of people because you never see it. You never touch it, you never feel it. You never actually see it. And if you see it, you don't know what you're even looking at. 44:06 That's a really really important point that goes to Stephen Covey's circles of influence in circles of concern today most people on social are focused on their in their circle of concern, like Oh, I'm really interested in this topic and they waste their time learning about stuff they literally can have no effect on 46:11 hey, that little piece, right? You make it better. And frankly, that's the that should be the goal, to leave things a little bit better than the way you found it.

Mindy Thompson Fullilove traverses the central thoroughfares of our cities to uncover the ways they bring together our communities After an 11-year study of Main Streets in 178 cities and 14 countries, Fullilove discovered the power of city centers to “help us name and solve our problems.” In an era of compounding crises including racial injustice, climate change, and COVID-19, the ability to rely on the power of community is more important than ever. However, Fullilove describes how a pattern of disinvestment in inner-city neighborhoods has left Main Streets across the U.S. in disrepair, weakening our cities and leaving us vulnerable to catastrophe. In the face of urban renewal programs built in response to a supposed lack of “personal responsibility,” Fullilove offers “a different story, that of a series of forced displacements that had devastating effects on inner-city communities. Through that lens, we can appreciate the strength of segregated communities that managed to temper the ravages of racism through the Jim Crow era, and build political power and many kinds of wealth. . . . Only a very well-integrated, powerful community—one with deep spiritual principles—could have accomplished such a feat.” This is the power she hopes we will find again.  Throughout Main Street: How a City's Heart Connects Us All (New Village Press, 2020), readers glimpse strong, vibrant communities who have conquered a variety of disasters, from the near loss of a beloved local business to the devastation of a hurricane. Using case studies to illustrate her findings, Fullilove turns our eyes to the cracks in city centers, the parts of the city that tend to be avoided or ignored. Providing a framework for those who wish to see their communities revitalized, Fullilove's Main Street encourages us all to look both inward and outward to find the assets that already exist to create meaningful change. Gentrification: The Denver Experience We talk about the history and politics of gentrification here on the CU Denver campus, as well as in the Denver Metro Area. Many news organizations and libraries have documented the ongoing disenfranchisement of the “Displaced Aurarians”—a largely Hispanic neighborhood “relocated” by the Auraria Campus, which houses CU Denver, Metro State University, and Community College of Denver. However, very few news sources have framed that notorious displacement within Denver's larger culture of gentrification. According to a 2020 study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Denver is the second most gentrified city in the nation, with over 27% of its neighborhoods affected by skyrocketing home prices and rising inequality. We first interview two Auraria campus employees: Francine Olivas-Zarate, who is our CU Denver English Department Program Coordinator, and her sister Benita Olivas, who was an advisor and worked in the Women's Center at the Community College of Denver. Their family members lived on 9th Street Park before the mass displacement by Auraria Higher Education Center in the 1970s, and both have worked on campus near their family's original home. Second, we interview Dr. Jeremy Nemeth, Professor in CU Denver's Urban and Regional Planning Department, and Dr. Brian Page, Associate Professor in our Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, about Denver's history of gentrification and current economic effects on particular neighborhoods. Finally, we interview Laura McKenna, Development Director of HomeAid America, who discusses the impact of gentrification on the growing number of unhoused people in Denver. According to William Fullilove, one of the joys of the past twenty years has been seeing a renewed emphasis on the doctrine of vocation in many Protestant churches—the understanding that God is pleased when each man and woman pursues his or her calling, whether that is to religious or “secular” work. He argues, however, that this has led to some unintended consequences. In this article, Fullilove considers Joseph’s story in Genesis 37-50, which he argues is a useful corrective. The opportunities and challenges presented by globalisation are very much on the mind of India’s Minister for External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. He wants India to enter the global arena “with cards to play” and, to that end, has argued for India to take a stronger approach to building its national capabilities. Those national capabilities have been tested by COVID-19, which has infected over 1 million Indians and claimed nearly 140,000 lives. But Dr Jaishankar also recognises the need for India to focus on greater international cooperation in solving the existential problems of the day, including climate change, terrorism and pandemics. “The world is not going to carry on with business as usual,” Dr Jaishankar recently observed. “Those with a more self-centred view of world politics will have to come to terms with the needs of the day.” The Lowy Institute was pleased to host Dr Jaishankar at a time of great ambition for India-Australia ties. In this virtual event, the Executive Director of Australia’s Lowy Institute, Dr Michael Fullilove, chaired a discussion ranging over topics such as India’s place in the world, its relations with China, the recently reconstituted ‘Quad’ grouping, COVID-19, and the future of India’s relations with Australia. - About the Speakers - Dr Jaishankar was Foreign Secretary from 2015 to 2018, Ambassador to the United States from 2013 to 2015, Ambassador to China from 2009 to 2013, High Commissioner to Singapore from 2007 to 2009 and Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2004.
