POPULARITY

Thad Jones, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard ve Don Cherry hakkında bilgiler edinip kendilerinin eserlerini dinliyoruz.
Trumpeter, composer/arranger Thad Jones born March 28, 1923, was the middle son in a family that also produced younger brother Elvin Jones, perhaps best known as John Coltrane's longtime drummer, and pianist Hank Jones, who performed and recorded with almost everyone in his long career, as one of the first black musicians to have a long and fruitful career in the New York studios. Thad first made his mark on the national scene as a soloist and arranger/composer for the Basie band in 1954. When he moved to New York City in the 1960's, he founded a big band he co led with drummer Mel Lewis that still plays weekly at the Village Vanguard, still playing much of the music Thad wrote. In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where he lead the Danish Radio Big Band, and taught at the Royal Danish Conservatory. In 1985 he took over leadership of the Basie Band, but tragically passed way in 1986 of cancer.
Recordings made by one of the greatest versions of the Basie band for Verve in January, 1956. Featuring arrangements by Ernie Wilkins, Neal Hefti, Joe Newman, Frank Wess and Frank Foster and solos by the two Franks, Newman, Thad Jones, Bill Hughes, Henry Coker, Benny Powell, Bill Graham, Marshall Royal and the great rhythm section of Basie, Freddie Green, Eddie Jones and Sonny Payne. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
Great Roulette recordings by the New Testament Basie Band reinterpreting the tunes from his 1930's and 40's band. Featuring great work by Billy Mitchell, Henry Coker, Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Jimmy Nottingham, Seldon Powell, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Marshall Royal, Benny Powell and Basie himself! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support
The music of Thelonious Monk is tonight's Jazz Feature subject and a fine album from June of 1959 that spotlights the Monk working quartet with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Sam Jones and the always swinging Arthur Taylor on drums. However there is a worthy addition to the Quartet which gives us the album title. That addition is cornetist Thad Jones who adds much musical spice to Monk's Quartet. If there is anyone who could have been added to Monk's working band it would be Thad. However this was a one shot recording date as Thad had a coveted position in the Count Basie Orchestra and had a little time off from Basie to do this date. The compositions are a mix of old and new all by Monk of course. Two new ones written for the date are "Played Twice" and "Jackie--ing" and the older ones are "Straight, No Chaser", "Ask Me Now" and "I Mean You". Thad in this writer's opinion is the star of the date and adapts so well to Monk's music. "Five By Monk By Five" is the Jazz feature tonight.
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is the ultimate multi-hyphenate: He's a musician, filmmaker, author, entrepreneur, and more. The Grammy and Oscar winner is also a plant-based foods advocate, so when I had some questions about the future of food, I knew I had to sit down with him. We had a blast talking about why he made a meatless Philly cheesesteak, how we make healthy food accessible to more people, Questlove's insane record collection, how we got our nicknames, and our Wordle strategies.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an ad-hoc session that Miles Davis did just before he formed his first great quintet. in the Fall of 1955. Miles selected some players that he knew and liked. Milt Jackson, the premier vibist in Modern Jazz was one of them, Jackie McLean was invited and brought along two new compositions to record at Miles' request. Ray Bryant was selected on piano. He was new to New York and beginning to make waves. Bassist Percy Heath was a long standing associate of Miles as was drummer Arthur Taylor. Two Jackie McLean compositions ("Dr.Jackle" & "Minor March") were recorded then without McLean two more tunes were done. The first was a complex composition by trumpeter Thad Jones called "Bitty Ditty" and the second was a Ray Bryant creation entitled "Changes". All in all a wonderful session with everyone in inspired form. The only drawback is that it is a short album lasting just over 1/2 hour. In the old showbiz saying "leave 'em wanting more". Miles Davis and Milt Jackson and company....tonight's Jazz Feature.
Stewart continues his interview with Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. Part 2 of 2.

Grammy-nominated composer, Miho Hazama is one of the most promising and talented composers/arrangers of her generation. Miho developed her signature jazz chamber orchestra “m_unit” while still a graduate student at the Manhattan School of Music. In fact, that is where I first met Miho when we overlapped, navigating jazz studies and all New York has to offer. Watching her career go from strength to strength since then has been an utter joy. In 2019, she took up a post as the chief conductor of Danish Radio Big Band, following in the footsteps of Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely. Besides DR Big Band, Miho has worked as a conductor with Metropole Orkest and the WDR Big Band, and she is also the Associate Artistic Director of the New York Jazzharmonic. It's a Pre-Launch Party! While the official re-launch of Divergent Paths won't come until later this month, we are having previews. Or a soft open. Or whatever you want to call it. Originally from ewarly 2016, this interview is from my first run of Divergent Paths. And it is great. David Taylor is one of the most legendary bass trombonists to ever pick up the instrument. He's played with everyone from Sinatra to Boulez to Duke Ellington to Thad Jones to the New York Philharmonic. And given solo recitals all around the world. And commissioned hundreds of pieces while pushing the envelope of trombone playing every chance he gets. Give it a listen. And come back next week for Part 2!

“What I keep grabbing from being a leader is the exact opposite of what I thought it was gonna be. I thought it was gonna be ‘I need to grab the reigns' when, quite frankly, it's ‘what are you feeling?' and ‘what can I do for you?'”Lead trumpet of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and jazz cat since the 5th grade, Nick Marchione has always had his sights on being a musician. From 6am wake-up calls of his dad playing Mahler 5 trumpet excerpts to his mom playing concerts on piano with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Nick grew up surrounded by music.By the age of 12, Nick knew he wanted to be a jazz cat in the Big Apple. He found his love for jazz thanks to Thad Jones & Mel Lewis records, and now, he's playing lead trumpet in the very band his idols created. The journey to get there ranged from playing in the Disney Youth Orchestra to touring with Prince, with lots of lessons learned along the way about leadership and “folding”. Every step of the way, he's been bringing people together.“Playing lead trumpet, you're in a leadership position… it's such an awesome responsibility.Keep up with Nick Marchione on Instagram @nickmarchionetrumpet and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra @vanguardjazz and https://www.vanguardjazzorchestra.com.
