Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Margaret Anne Mary Moore shares her inspiring story of overcoming obstacles and achieving her greatest ambitions. Born with cerebral palsy, she relies on a motorized wheelchair, walker, and communication device. However, her family has a positive outlook, teaching her to see herself as a kid who could play, laugh, and learn just like anyone else. With the support of her mother, she pursued regular education, athletics, and activities like Girl Scouting. As a recipient of the Gold Award, she created the Yes, You Can Movement, motivating people of all ages and abilities to overcome obstacles and reach their goals. Tune in to hear her powerful journey and how she uses her life experiences to inspire others. More from Margaret: I am a Lifetime Girl Scout and have been in Scouting since Daisies. I have served as a National Delegate for Girl Scouts of Connecticut for two consecutive terms (2014-2017, 2017-2020). I earned my Gold Award in 2015 and was awarded Girl Scouts of Connecticut's Courage, Confidence, and Character Award in 2021. A 2022 graduate of Fairfield University's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program and a 2020 magna cum laude graduate of Fairfield University with a bachelor's degree in English/Creative Writing and minor in psychology, I currently work as a book editor and marketing coordinator for Woodhall Press and an ambassador for PRC-Saltillo. My debut disability memoir Bold, Brave, and Breathless: Reveling in Childhood's Splendiferous Glories While Facing Disability and Loss was released in October and became an Amazon Bestseller on publication day, remaining on the bestseller list for several weeks. I am now working on the sequel.   https://www.instagram.com/margaretannemarymoore_author/ https://margaretannemarymoore.com/ Bold, Brave, and Breathless: Reveling in Childhood's Splendiferous Glories While Facing Disability and Loss Key takeaways from the episode: Despite being born with cerebral palsy and facing physical limitations, Margaret's family instills in her a positive outlook on her disability. They taught her that she could play, laugh, and learn just like her able-bodied peers, which shaped her mindset and allowed her to overcome obstacles. Margaret has a strong support system, including her family, friends, mentors, and organizations like Girl Scouts. These individuals and groups provide guidance, encouragement, and opportunities for her to pursue her ambitions and make a difference in the world. Margaret has faced stereotypes and challenges throughout her life, including being told that kids with disabilities don't earn the Girl Scouts Gold Award. However, she persists and finds ways to overcome these obstacles, proving that anything is possible with determination and belief in oneself. Her experiences in running and completing races also highlight her ability to push through fatigue and achieve her goals. Share this show with your friends on Twitter. When this week's guest, author Patricia Crisafulli, and I first got on a call together she expressed that she wasn't quite sure if she would be the right fit for my audience. She wondered if Creative Fiction was "spiritual" enough for the show. After all of 30 seconds talking we both decided,  of course it is! What could be more Spiritual than Divine Creation of stories, ideas, and expressions of the Human experience? Patricia believes that stories – all stories – hold deep truths. They're the “myths of meaning” for our own time. As we capture, polish, share, and retell our stories, we find layers of new meaning. They don't have to be autobiographical to show us either our current world-view or an alternate world-view. On this episode Patricia shares some unique concepts from her journey as a creative writer including writing as an act of faith & why we have to find the courage – and give ourselves the permission – to believe deeply in ourselves and the importance of our stories. How the writer's path is one of rejection – and redirection. It's simply part of the process. And how we all need to find ways to become empowered – not defeated – as we face, process, and ultimately move beyond the “no” and reach the “yes.”Join the Women Waken Community on Instagram Here: https://tinyurl.com/522duz2c You can learn more about Patricia & find her books here:Patricia Crisafulli is an award-winning writer and a New York Times bestselling author. Eileen J. Donovan: A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma. This is episode 515 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Today I am talking with Eileen J. Donovan. Although born in New York City, where she spent most of her life, she has lived in six states and has visited most of the others. She earned her MA in English at Northern Arizona University. In one way or another, she has been writing her entire life, whether it was imaginative stories for her friends, or advertising copy for industrial clients. She never felt her stories were “good enough” to be published. At the persistent urging of her late husband, she finally agreed to seriously edit and revise one of them and take the plunge. Although accepted for publication, the book never made it all the way to print. However, she had the courage to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Years later, her persistence paid off. Her traditionally published debut historical novel, Promises, won the 2019 Marie M Irvine Award for Literary Excellence. Her historical fiction, A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma presently with Woodhall Press and released in September 2022, won the 2021 When Words Count nationwide competition. She's also had short stories published in various anthologies. Her non-fiction essay appeared in the 2021 Chicken Soup for the Soul Blessing of Christmas.  She lives in Manhattan, New York and is a member of Authors Guild, SCBWI, Women's National Book Association, and The Historical Novel Society. What are Secondary Characters? How do you develop them? And how do you keep them from taking over your books? For thirteen years, Nancy Crochiere wrote a humor column about family life for Massachusetts newspapers, then published a collection of those columns titled The Mother Load. She has worked as a development editor for various educational publishers and has written essays for The Boston Globe, Writer's Digest, and WBUR's Cognoscenti blog. She began her fiction career by penning creative notes excusing her daughters' tardiness at school. With her girls now grown, she lives north of Boston with her husband, a lawyer and marathoner, and a few house plants that could use more attention. Graceland, her first novel, was workshopped in Year 8 of GrubStreet's Novel Incubator program, and will be published by HarperCollins in May 2023.Suzanne DeWitt Hall (she/her/hers) is the author of the Where True Love Is devotionals, the Living in Hope series which supports the family and friends of transgender people, The Path of Unlearning faith deconstruction books, and the Rumplepimple children's books. She is mildly obsessed with vintage cookbooks and the intersection of sexuality and theology. Her debut novel, The Language of Bodies launched recently with Woodhall Press. It's the story of Maddie Well's mission of vengeance after the murder of her wife: a transgender woman of color. Wally Lamb calls it “…a film noir between covers—dark, tense, and sexy.” This is a public episode. As a writer of spiritual nonfiction, one might wonder: Do any of these seemingly random stories, these anecdotes and details and bits of personal history, matter to anyone but me? What good is all this storytelling doing for other people? After all, the goal of good spiritual nonfiction isn't to be another entry in a personal diary; it's meant to help all people glimpse something new of their own spirituality. Our guest today helps us tackle this question — and many more. Christine Marie Eberle is the author of two books of daily meditations based on her own true personal stories. She sees her personal mission like this: she passionately connects spirituality, Scripture and everyday life. And with 26 years of experience as a campus minister under her belt, not to mention her current work as a retreat leader, it's clear she has a wealth of stories to draw from to live out this mission. Her latest book, "Finding God Abiding" from Woodhall Press, drops us into these personal, at times humorous, at times heartbreaking, stories from her life. And it is through the utterly specific details of her life that we are drawn closer to God in our own. After all, God deals with us in the specific, not the abstract. Today's conversation with Christine is all about Ignatian storytelling, what it means to tell and share stories from the tradition of Ignatian spirituality. Hopefully you find something in this conversation that helps you explore your story in a new way — and maybe, share with others. Botonist Andre Damazy undertakes a perilous exploration into the mountains of Kazakhstan to retrieve a sapling from a rare apple tree in the mountains of Kazakhstan. At great cost, he manages to retrieve a sapling, and brings it to his hidden greenhouse in Paris. The fruit of the tree has mysterious medicinal properties, and Andre's mission is both scientific and personal, because his mother has suffered a serious stroke. He receives sufficient funding to create the correct conditions to care for the trees, but he's under pressure, both from his sponsors, and from a mysterious organization that fears the apple is an omen of evil. Second in Karen Hugg's literary thriller series focused on the world of plants, Harvesting the Sky (Woodhall Press, 2021) is a parable about what we take from nature. Karen Hugg is also the author of The Forgetting Flower and Song of the Tree Hollow. Born into a Polish family and raised in Chicago, she later moved to Seattle and worked as an editor in tech, which gave her the opportunity to live in Paris for a short time. Afterward, she became a certified ornamental horticulturalist and master pruner. Karen earned an MFA from Goddard College and her work has appeared in The Big Thrill, Crime Reads, Thrive Global, and other publications. She lives with her husband and three kids in Seattle, where she's finishing up her first nonfiction book, Leaf Your Troubles Behind: How to Destress and Grow Happiness Through Plants. When she's not writing or gardening, Karen is learning guitar by playing her favorite songs from the Scottish band, Travis. I interview authors of beautifully written literary fiction and mysteries, and try to focus on independently published novels, especially by women and others whose voices deserve more attention.
