Grace Norman is a four-time Paralympic medalist, once in track and field and three times in the sport of Paratriathlon. She is also, as of October 2024, a five-time world Paratriathlon champion. This episode focuses on Norman's Paralympic journey which spans Rio, Tokyo, and this year's 2024 Paralympics in Paris. For over a decade now, Norman's primary focus has been Paratriathlon, but before that, she was a competitive runner, and running is at the foundation of Grace's athletic life: she ran track and cross country in high school and college, racing able-bodied competitors. Grace was born with Congenital Constriction Band Syndrome, which resulted in the amputation of her left leg below the knee and her right big toe when she was young. Norman runs and races with a prosthetic. Norman started racing Paratriathlon in her teens, and made her Paralympic debut in Rio, the same year Paratriathlon debuted at the Games. There, Norman surprised everyone, herself included, by winning gold. Since then, Paratriathlon has continued to grow and the competition has intensified, and in turn, Norman has continued to develop as a world-class competitor. Starting with those Rio games when Norman was just graduating high school and heading into college through her collegiate years, which led to Tokyo, until now as a full-time professional athlete. Over the past several years, Norman has been the athlete to beat in Paratriathlon, but it did take some time for that consistency to set in. She's gone through the highs of being the young, talented newcomer in Rio, to a time of learning and growth heading into the Tokyo Paralympics, where she and her coach had very high confidence that a repeat gold medal performance was within her abilities. And it probably was; Norman was certainly prepared to give her all in Tokyo. What happened in Tokyo inspired Norman to double down on her preparation for Paris. In this story, Norman shares the whole journey, including the unwavering determination and dedication she carried all the way through the finish line at this past summer's 2024 Paralympic Games. He saw the myriad ways that people handled the process of recovery, many using sport to not only overcome their new adversity, but to rise to a higher level of functioning in the aftermath of trauma. By the end of his stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, he made a pledge to himself that he would utilize his experience, understanding, and compassion to help others overcome their individual physical and emotional challenges to reach their maximum potential.-He completed a Master's degree in Rehabilitation and Clinical Counseling from George Washington University and a second master's degree in Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Denver. For Paralympian athlete Gerrard Gosens, taking on the challenge of swimming across the English Channel is more than just a physical one. It's also mental, as the blind swimmer confronts the elements and conditions of the day and then figures out how to overcome them. Gerrard tells us on Streets of Your Town podcast how he is well into an intense training regimen preparing for his attempted channel crossing in August - swimming from the UK to France in his quest to become the first blind person to do so. It's a big leap from his previous sport of running - having represented Australia in long distance running in three Paralympic Games and three IPC World Athletic Championships from 1996 to 2011, as well as the Paratriathlon at Tokyo 2022. Another great story shared by an inspiring everyday athlete.Mal Smith got in touch after speaking to a former guest, John Armstrong, recommended he got in touch to share his story. Mal states"Im a triathlete at Cleethorpes Tri Club and along with my 18 year old son Callum, we've qualified this year to race the standard distance in Torremolinos. I'm also a PTS5 ParaTriathlete and it was the knock on effect of training for the British Super Series (finishing second at the British ParaTri champs) that brought my times down last year to qualify at Sunderland. I got into triathlon after a lifetime of proving to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind too…and so after a number of years obstacle course racing and running multiple marathons, Ironman became the next target! Triathlon then changed my life and continues to do so, as I realised just what is possible!I'd love to raise the profile of Para Triathlon but also highlight that just because you may have a physical impairment it doesn't stop you from taking part in our fantastic sport! In this episode, Colin and Elliot have the pleasure of interviewing Steve Lovelace, one of the first paratriathletes in the sport. Steve nearly died while chopping firewood with a friend in a remote field in Oklahoma at the age of 20. In what can only be described as a freak accident, Lovelace became trapped when part of the tree split in half, catching him and pinning him between the trunk and the ground. With the weight of the massive tree slab crushing his body, it took two hours for his friend and a local farmer to free him with a chainsaw. When he arrived at the hospital, the doctors weren't sure he would survive. He did survive, but his injuries were extensive: A shattered wrist. A broken back. Both of his upper and lower jaws were crushed, the roof of his mouth split open. The swelling in his back so severe it caused temporary paralysis. The facial damage was so horrific, his appearance so altered, that surgeons used his high school senior portrait as a template as they worked to piece the bones back together. From one minute to the next, Lovelace's life shifted from that of a carefree, athletic, college kid to one marred by pain and physical challenges due to his debilitating injuries. For three months, he lay bound to a hospital bed, paralyzed from the waist down; his face swollen beyond recognition, shattered bones carefully pinned back into place. His once strapping, 150-pound frame shrunk to 90 pounds. When his doctors spoke solemnly of a life bound to a wheelchair; Lovelace told them he'd walk out of the hospital. Which, he did, but only a few steps, with crutches. The effort exhausted him. It took time and plenty of physical therapy, but he re-learned to walk after regaining most of the function in his legs. His positive, can-do attitude led him to train for a triathlon, which was still in its early years at the time, when he watched the 1985 Ironman World Championships on television. Steve made history when he completed a triathlon in 1986; he shared a YouTube compilation of his journey here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q2_NQ1_uYw&t Enjoy the listen and thanks for joining us Steve!
Shona Brownlee is one of those people in life that it's a joy to talk to. Shona's childhood wasn't devoted to sport, but music. She loved it and every spare minute was spent practising and rehearsing. She went on to become a professional musician, but after a while, she wanted a more secure lifestyle, so she became a musician with the RAF. During training, Shona had an accident that eventually led her to becoming a Winter Paralympian and a British Paratriathlon Champion. And, no, she isn't related to them. You'll hear: 07:30 Shona talks about her childhood, which was spent focussing on music. Shona talks about the similarities between dedicating your time to music or sport as a teenager. 'It became everything.' "I knew I wanted to go on and be a performance musician.' 11:30 Shona on why she joined the RAF as a musician. 'I never really considered myself as a military person, but I realised that there were loads of benefits that came with it.' 'I was really worried about the initial training, but it wasn't as bad as I had expected and it was totally different to anything I had ever done before and I knew when I came through it, the job would be entirely different. 15:30 Shona talks about the life-changing 'innocuous' accident that happened during the final part of initial training. "What we thought was a sprained ankle just never got any better and after 6 years I had an elective amputation. I had nothing to lose. Even after the surgery, it was like a huge sense of relief. I wasn't miserable, but i couldn't live like I wanted to live.' 20:00 We talk about the 'Battle Back' programme, which gave Shona the chance to go and do some skiing. 'The first time i was in a sitski, I was terrified. But it was one of the first times since my accident I was being shown what I could do.' And focussing on the positive side of things you CAN do. 23:30 How Shona talks about the process of going from being introduced to sitskiing to then competing at the highest level at the Paralympics. "I can't say I'm sorry that my accident happened as it opened up so many doors and opportunities' 27:30 Shona describes what it's like being in the start gate before a race and the nerves that came with it initially. 29:00 We talk about the similarities between music and sport. 'You've got this once chance to perform and for it to go right. I think breathing techniques I learnt through music and self awareness of the pressure I put on myself is very similar.' 32:30 Paratriathlon and why Shona did her first triathlon and went on to become 'British paratriathlon Champion.' 'I don't have the time to devote to triathlon and I will continue to do it as a little bit of fun.' 'I worked hard after my amputation to learn to run and i don't want to lose that.' 37:30 We go a bit deeper into the psyche of people telling you 'you can't do something.' 48:00 Shona's relationship with sport.' I really only took it up to get into the RAF. Sport wasn't a massive part of my life. I wasn't unhealthy but I wasn't as fit as I could be. I get a lot of inspiration from hearing the stories of elite athletes. That's what got me started in the sport! But I get way more inspiration from hearing stories from ‘normal' people like you and me. None more so than those who have survived overwhelming odds not just to complete a triathlon but to actually stay alive. Steve Lovelace is one such person. At the age of 20, Steve suffered catastrophic injuries in a lumberjack incident. After being trapped for 2 hours, and when he eventually made it to the hospital, he was given a 50/50 chance of surviving the night. He was temporarily paralysed below the waist due to his spinal injuries but not only did he walk a few steps when he finally left hospital, he subsequently completed that triathlon! Some of the questions I asked Steve in today's chat were: Did you have any challenged athletes who served as an inspiration to you (i.e. Pat Griskus)? How did you go about training? Given the severity of your injuries from the accident, did you throw caution to the wind? Or did you worry that if you pushed yourself too far you'd exacerbate your injuries? Did you have to make any adaptations to your equipment? Talk about that first triathlon What impact did finishing that first triathlon have on your life? What do you do now, and what are the long-term effects of your accident? The best place to follow Steve is on Twitter @sp_lovelace There are a couple more podcasts where Steve shares his story Don't say I can't, say I'll try Steve shares his story on the Dadcast Also, this great article in Triathlete magazine How Finishing Last Set This Triathlete's Life on a Winning Path And finally, the YouTube video outlining Steve's accident and his journey back to health and fitness (look for the picture of the tree split in two!!)
