Most people will be haunted by the words “what if?”—but not Sara Haines. She's the witty and whip smart co-host on The View,  former anchor on Good Morning America and Today, Emmy-nominated journalist. In this episode, Sara opens up about the moments the world didn't see; the less polished parts of her journey—the rejections, pivots, and quiet persistence that led her to one of the most iconic tables in television. Sara shares: The real story behind getting on-air at the Today Show (hint: it involves stalking someone on the subway) What happened when she finally got her name in the title... and then the show got canceled The identity whiplash of going from “fun girl” to “mom content only” The unexpected moment that nearly made her walk away from TV The emotional toll of being praised, passed over, and pigeonholed Her dream to be on Saturday Night Live and the moment she was actually parodied on it The surprising advice her husband gave that set her free: “Let go of the dream you never actually had” Why “being the person who tries” is her life's north star. Featuring cameos from: Kristen Cavallari, Hoda & Kathie Lee, Kiki Palmer, Chris Brown, and a surprisingly pivotal moment with a Facebook intern. What it really means to try: when no one's watching, when the outcome is uncertain, and when the voice in your head says “you're not good enough.” Follow Sara here. What are Secondary Characters? How do you develop them? And how do you keep them from taking over your books? For thirteen years, Nancy Crochiere wrote a humor column about family life for Massachusetts newspapers, then published a collection of those columns titled The Mother Load. She has worked as a development editor for various educational publishers and has written essays for The Boston Globe, Writer's Digest, and WBUR's Cognoscenti blog. She began her fiction career by penning creative notes excusing her daughters' tardiness at school. With her girls now grown, she lives north of Boston with her husband, a lawyer and marathoner, and a few house plants that could use more attention. Graceland, her first novel, was workshopped in Year 8 of GrubStreet's Novel Incubator program, and will be published by HarperCollins in May 2023.Suzanne DeWitt Hall (she/her/hers) is the author of the Where True Love Is devotionals, the Living in Hope series which supports the family and friends of transgender people, The Path of Unlearning faith deconstruction books, and the Rumplepimple children's books. She is mildly obsessed with vintage cookbooks and the intersection of sexuality and theology. Her debut novel, The Language of Bodies launched recently with Woodhall Press. It's the story of Maddie Well's mission of vengeance after the murder of her wife: a transgender woman of color. Wally Lamb calls it “…a film noir between covers—dark, tense, and sexy.” This is a public episode. About this episode: When Dr. John Lyons casually mentioned to host Kristen Cerelli that he'd be interested in hearing what method actors had to say about the process of transformation, Kristen knew just who to call. Enter actor Gabe Fazio and teacher of actors Brandy Hotchner, who share their well worn input on the subject. About our guests: A native of Long Island, Gabe Fazio epitomizes the passion and sacrifice of the working actor. A lifetime member of The Actors Studio in NYC, Gabe works steadily in theatre, film and television. He originated the role of Mark in Lyle Kessler's play First Born and has appeared on Law & Order, Blue Bloods and Homeland, as well as in the films A Place Beyond the Pines and A Star is Born. Gabe's invisible work with Mark Ruffalo in the HBO series I Know This Much Is True was much lauded by director Derek Cianfrance and writer Wally Lamb. After 10 years as a struggling working actor in NYC, Brandy moved to Arizona in 2002. She was just passing through on her way to Los Angeles. New York, after 9/11, had lost its romance and she longed to get back out West. She never made it to LA. During Brandy's first week in Arizona, she met her husband and now has a family, raising two teenage boys. That was an act of true providence. Brandy often says, “I would not be coaching if life had not interfered with my plans.” Today, she is the owner and Artistic Director of the region's top acting school, Arizona Actors Academy. How did he become a D1 basketball coach? What key lessons did he learn after penning his first novel that he applied to his second? Why is it so important to research your subjects and experience their environment firsthand? Because that's the hard part for me! I love coaching basketball and I love parenting my children, but I am not in love with the idea of throwing the books in the trunk of my car and going to the Lebanon Shakespeare Festival [but you must do it].” “Finding a literary agent is the equivalent of finding a leprechaun riding a unicorn at a Red Sox victory parade in the 1960s. I got one response out of all the ones I sent out, and it's always been hard for me to figure why no one jumped on a book about Shakespeare written by a college basketball coach.” Where to buy his book: Amazon, Bookshop How to get in touch with William Twitter: @twotwenty221 If you liked this conversation, please tell a friend about it as well as like, rate, and review Uncorking a Story wherever you get your podcasts.

Marilyn Peterson Haus learned to read and write in a one-room school set in the midst of a sea of corn, and then rode a rickety yellow school bus seven miles to the nearest town (population 700) for middle and high school. Everything was oriented around the railroad that sliced through the tallgrass prairie, heading west. Marilyn's own journey took her in the opposite direction, and after attending Augsburg College (now Augsburg University) in Minneapolis, she and her husband moved east and settled in western Massachusetts, where she raised three children, earned an MBA and launched a successful business career. After retiring from her day job, Marilyn followed her dream to become a writer, began attending a weekly writer's workshop, and over the course of ten years, wrote and completed Half a Whole – her first book. When she isn't writing, Marilyn can be found shoveling compost around the coneflowers, hostas, and day lilies that overflow her many flower gardens.Without These Books is a thank-you-inspired Video/Podcast. The southeastern part of our state conjures images of casinos, submarines, and a blue-collar vibe that's just a little different from the rest of the state's image of leafy suburbs, clapboard homes, and town greens that show off Connecticut's colonial past. The southeastern corner has its own allure, challenging writers and artists mystified by this place that time left alone. It's quirky, a little unruly, and special in ways we can't fully define. Wally Lamb describes it as "more feisty than fashionable, more liverwurst than pate." We talk to three writers, including Wally Lamb, who have tried to capture the essence of this unique region of Connecticut. I just started watching Tiny Pretty Things on Netflix, and I’m very intrigued by the culture of ballet, both its beauty and ugliness (e.g. the need for a specific body type, the cut throat environment, etc.) I’d love to read a novel that dives into this concept, specifically about what it is like to be an elite ballerina. I’m not interested in a dry, informational read, but one where I can learn about the world and lifestyle of ballet through fiction. Thanks! -Emily 2. Hi! Let me take a sappy moment to say finding this podcast was one of the highlights of a very sucky year. Can’t thank you enough for giving me something to look forward to every week (and a hefty book wish list!).  I recently watched Mank and though I didn’t like it, it put me in the mood for a glossy and gossipy book about the Hollywood Studio System. I haven’t read anything in this realm with the exception of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so I’m pretty open to anything whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, but would prefer if it didn’t focus on white men.  Thank you both so much!  -Sofia 3. Hello! I’m looking for a book to gift to my friend for her birthday. Some fiction books I have recommended, and she has liked in the past are, The Goldfinch, The Signature of All Things, and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. She has also told me she liked Where the Crawdad Sings and she loves pretty much everything Wally Lamb has ever written and John Green. She’s told me before she likes long meandering books with no plot. I’ve also definitely noticed she likes what I can only describe as books about angsty protagonists. Other than John Green I don’t think she reads any YA, but I do think she feels a connection to characters who suffer from “teen angst”, be they teenagers or not.  She also occasionally dips into horror, but I don’t think she’s ventured outside of Stephen King. As for nonfiction books, she likes what she calls “fucked up childhood memoirs,” like The Glass Castle, Educated, etc. She’s read most of the popular memoirs in this category as far as I can tell, so I’m a bit wary of picking out memoirs because I can’t be sure if she’s read them or not. I wanted to gift her H is for Hawk because it seems right up her ally, but I think she might have told me she listened to it on audiobook. I’m planning on giving her Parable of the Sower for Christmas, but I’m writing this in early December before I have given it to her, so I have no idea if it will be a success or not, but a lot of the plot contains themes she is interested in, so I have high hopes. I know this ask was probably overly long, I just wanted to be as thorough as I could be. Thank you both so much in advanced!  -Anonymous 4. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I’m a public librarian, and I listen to Get Booked and the Book Riot podcast to help me strengthen my readers’ advisory skills. It never really occurred to me to ask you for a recommendation for myself until recently, so I hope it’s okay that I have two (somewhat lengthy) requests. Firstly, I am hoping to find a book that speaks to my experience as a woman in her twenties struggling to establish a rewarding career, to find a life partner, and to stay afloat financially. I must admit, I am a picky reader. I often find the writing style of romance/genre fiction to be too cheesy, but I also roll my eyes at lit fic that takes itself too seriously. If it feels like the writer is trying to show off with poetic language or overly complicated structure, I’m out. I like straight-forward writing and authentic dialogue. I am a Millennial, but books that feature hip, tech-savvy Millennials with personal brands turn me off. The books that have come closest to hitting the mark are Such a Fun Age and Writers & Lovers. In Such a Fun Age, I related to the issues of underemployment and the quest for health care, but I didn’t find the main character particularly likable. In Writers & Lovers, I related to the main character struggling with student loan payments and working a job in the service industry while nurturing creative goals, but the writing laid it on a little too thick. I am looking for a likable character who is actively trying to make a life for herself as an adult. Not self-sabotaging or reckless, just experiencing some hard knocks, and the shame, doubt, and/or loneliness that can accompany those feelings of failure. Oh, and no Dear Sugar, please. I know it’s a swiss-army rec for Book Rioters, but I just really don’t connect with Cheryl Strayed. Secondly, I am hoping you can recommend a career advice book that is useful for the average Jane. The career books that I have read thus far seem to be written by/aimed at women in the corporate world are already quite successful & prestigious, at least by my standards. As a small-town librarian, I do not find these high-powered women relatable because it seems like they live in an entirely different world. That being said, I still want to learn how to grow my career and create opportunities for myself.  Thanks in advance! My apologies for a specific and lengthy requests. Take care, -M 5. I am looking for a book where the main character comes up with and completes some personal project. In these pandemic times, I’ve decided to embark on my own personal project of interviewing different members of my family about their lives and compiling it all. I need some motivation/inspiration, ideally in audiobook format. One such book that I loved is the “Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society”. Something that has a feeling of accomplishment and a feel-good plot. Thanks so much!  -Allie 6. Started listening to your podcast a few months ago and love it. I’ve recently finished two series: The fallen blade by Kelly McCullough and The chaos queen quintet by Christopher Husberg What I like about these series is the world building and the characters. I didn’t quite like the religions described in the books, but they add a nice touch to enrich the worlds in which the series are set in. Do you have any recommendations as to what to read next? I’d like to stay in the Fantasy genre because I’ve been reading too much Scifi lately. Thanks in advance, -Matteo 7. I need some gay twilight essentially. I’m talkin’ embarrassing w/w gay vampires. Pretty please

The novel takes place in Three Rivers, Connecticut in the early 1990s. Dominick Birdsey's identical twin, Thomas Birdsey, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. With medication, Thomas is able to live his life in relative peace and work at a coffee stand, but occasionally, he has severe episodes of his illness. Thinking he is making a sacrificial protest that will stop the Gulf War, Thomas cuts off his own hand while at a public library. Dominick sees him through the ensuing decision not to attempt to reattach the hand, and makes efforts on his behalf to free him from what he knows to be an inadequate and depressing hospital for the dangerously mentally ill. In the process, Dominick contemplates his own difficult life as Thomas's brother, his marriage to his gorgeous ex-wife, which ended after their only child died of SIDS, and his ongoing hostility toward his stepfather. Dominick also displays classic symptoms of PTSD, as a result of stressors in his adult life. First in Thomas's interests, and then for his own sake, he sees a therapist, Dr. Rubina Patel, a psychologist employed by the hospital. She helps Dominick come to understand Thomas's illness better and the family's accommodations or reactions to it. In the course of Thomas's treatment, Dominick is covertly informed of sexual abuse taking place in the hospital, and helps to expose the perpetrators. He succeeds in getting Thomas released, but Thomas soon dies, apparently by suicide. After Thomas's death, Dominick discovers the identity of their birth father, who was part African American and part Native American—a secret their mother had shared with Thomas, but not with him. In the midst of this, Dominick is also reading the autobiography of his grandfather, Italian/Sicilian-born Domenico Tempesta, which discloses details about the legacy of twins in their family. Dominick learns about himself and his mother through learning about his grandfather. He also learns that his live-in girlfriend, Joy, has been seeing a gentleman on the side, who is her bisexual half-uncle, and has also let him watch her and Dominick during sex on previous occasions. She is also HIV-positive, having contracted it from her secret lover. She asks Dominick to raise her baby if she dies. At first Dominick resists, but later, after having found his way back into a relationship with his ex-wife, Dessa, they decide to remarry each other and adopt Joy's daughter. The book ends with Dominick able to cope with the considerable loss, failure, and sorrow in his personal and family history.

Adapted from the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place beyond the Pines), the six episode miniseries stars Mark Ruffalo as twin brothers Dominick & Thomas Birdsey, as they deal with numerous tragedies that have befallen their family, including their mother's death from cancer, their step father's abuse, Thomas' paranoid schizophrenia, Dominick's separation from his ex-wife Dessa (Kathryn Hahn) and a manuscript from their Sicilian grandfather that spells out even more truths that they didn't know about their family. It was a show to watch to say the least, but thanks to the fact that it was shot in our respective hometowns of Poughkeepsie, Lagrange and Wappingers Falls, New York, we were able to recognize many of the locations used in the show, and were even able to lock down a crew member who worked on the show, my friend from high school and fellow movie lover, Brendan Lynch! We had a very fascinating conversation as this was a show that meant a lot to us for a lot of different reasons, so stay tuned! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In 1998 Wally Lamb was on book tour to publicize his blockbuster novel "I Know This Much Is True." The novel had been catapulted to literary glory when it was selected as the featured book by Oprah Winfrey for her Book Club. Lamb is that rare lucky author who then went on to have his next book chosen by Oprah as well. He came out to Yellow Springs to do an interview with me. This story about two identical twins and how they dealt with the fact that when one of them was a teenager he developed paranoid schizophrenia and the other one, our narrator, had to take care of him, was snapped up by Hollywood at the time for development into a movie. But there was a problem with that. The book was a sprawling 900+ pages and nobody was ever able to figure out how to turn this massive endeavor into a two hour long film. It was never made into a movie. Eventually the rights to adapt the novel into a film or TV program reverted back to Wally Lamb and after 22 years this story has finally been turned

I had the best time doing an Instagram Live with Wally Lamb who is the author of six New York Times best-selling novels: I’ll Take You There, We Are Water, Wishin’ and Hopin’, The Hour I First Believed, I Know This Much is True, and She’s Come Undone. I Know This Much is True and She’s Come Undone were both selected for Oprah’s Book Club. Lamb also edited Couldn’t Keep It to Myself and I’ll Fly Away, two volumes of essays from students in his writing workshop at York Correctional Institution which is a women’s prison in Connecticut where he has been a volunteer facilitator for the past seventeen years. I Know This Much is True was first published in 1998, and has now been turned into an HBO original limited series which just aired. Wally and I talked about what drew him to write these characters originally, his curiosity about and research into mental illness, and being part of a fifteen year project to turn his writing into film.

Wally Lamb is the author of not one, but six New York Times best-selling novels that speak to generations of readers who recognize their own struggles within his characters. He was twice selected for Oprah’s Book Club with She’s Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, a current HBO limited series starring Mark Ruffalo as identical twin brothers, one with paranoid schizophrenia.   The human struggle and the power of story to heal inspire Wally, a former high school English teacher. The work he’s done teaching writing to women prisoners in Connecticut and editing two volumes of their essays most embodies the idea of the healing power of storytelling.    Wally was born to a working-class family in Norwich, Connecticut. He began writing in 1981, the year he became a father, and credits his ability to write in female voices with having grown up with older sisters in a neighborhood largely populated by girls. Wally and his wife Christine live in northeastern Connecticut and in New York City and are the parents of three sons and three grandchildren. Wally’s characters are imperfect people seeking to become better people, stories that move beyond the boundaries and limitations of his own experience to better understand the lives of others. You can’t help but see yourself in his stories and be moved.    SHOW NOTE LINKS: The Official Wally Lamb Website I Know This Much Is True- HBO Limited Series Official Website Rachel’s Essay- 15 Reasons Writing is More Exhausting than Teaching Kindergarten   CONNECT WITH US! *Dear Family, Podcast Page *Write Now Rachel Website *Rachel's Blog @Medium *Rachel’s Twitter *Facebook *Instagram   PLEASE JOIN: *Dear Family Members, the Private Facebook Group     WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST: *PLEASE Leave a 5-Star Review and ***Listen and Subscribe via iTunes!!!  ***Listen and Subscribe via Stitcher!!! ***Listen and Subscribe via Spotify!!!

Amanda and Jenn discuss Finnish literature, mental illness, enemies-to-lovers stories, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Your One and Only by Adrianne Finlay and Comic Bento.   Questions   1. I’m heading on a trip to Finland at the end of February and I’d love to read some Finnish fiction, translated to English please! I’d love something with a strong sense of place to familiarize me with the environment/culture/weather etc. My favourite books are easy enough to fall into and ones where the characters stay with you long after the story ends. I’m generally a literary fiction reader but happily read other things except for romance and scific/fantasy (as a rule). If it helps, some of my favourite authors are Heather O’Neill, Miriam Toews, Peter Heller, A.M. Homes, Wally Lamb, David Benioff and Willy Vlautin. Thanks for the help! --Julie   2. Hi! I love your podcast and listen to your show every week! I just finished Turtles All the Way Down by John Green and loved Aza's perspective. I live with mental illness as does she, and I really enjoyed reading a story where the character accepts her mental illness and still struggles even though she is in recovery. I really like the non-linear way the book looks at her condition. Do you know of any other books where the main character has a mental illness, but does not exactly "defeat" it and instead learns to accept themselves? I have read I Can't Promise You a Rose Garden and enjoyed that. (Sidenote, I have read many books about people with eating disorders and I would prefer recommendations that do not include that topic.) Thanks! --Sara   3. I love fiction by what I like to think of as provocative and sometimes offensive people of faith. I love books where the author writes about his or her faith tradition from a place of love, but aren't afraid to ask the messy questions, air the dirty laundry, and treat belief like the complicated, untidy, yet deeply meaningful thing that it is. Some of my favorite authors that I'd put in this category are Chaim Potok, Fyodor Dostoevksy, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh & Levi S. Peterson. I love would to read more fiction like this. I read widely and would be comfortable with any genre except horror. Thanks! --Erin   4. Recently I read Michelle Moran's The Heretic Queen. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it, but it did leave me wanting to find a good historical romance or fiction in a similar vein. The main reason I did not enjoy the book was because I felt the relationship in the book was not strong enough. I have two requests, and I hope they aren't too much. I'd like the book to be set in the ancient world (Greece, Egypt, Rome), and I want a strong relationship (F/M M/M and F/F are all fine). I don't want instant love, or an undeveloped relationship- I really want to be able to root for the relationship. And before you mention it, I have read (and loved) The Song of Achilles. Thanks for the awesome show guys! I can't wait to hear your recommendations. --Anon   5. Hello: I am not a big romance reader. I very rarely pick up a romance. I struggle with historical fiction, so historical romance is really not my thing. However, I recently read The Hating Game by Sally Thorn and loved the contemporary romance. It was an "enemy to lovers" type books, so I enjoyed the banter and the humor. Disclaimer: some portions were problematic, so I do not mean to say that it was perfect. But, it did keep me reading. I would like some similar recommendations. I would prefer contemporary romance, but I'll take anything I can get that explores the "enemy to lovers" theme. Thanks, --Awful at Romance Reading   6. Thank you for an awesome podcast. I suffer from depression and considering the world’s political climate, I will continue to suffer for some time. I study humanitarian action in crisis and I love to read books that are topic heavy, such as Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie or The color Purple by Alice Walker or an anthology about racism in Sweden (I'm from Stockholm). Although the books are so good and I can't get enough (I also have ADHD which makes me unable to give up on these books but at the same time considering my depression they also make me sadder and unable to heal right now). I feel like I need something to break this habit while trying to get better and read book that’ll make me laugh or not think. I love novels about dance (favourites include Mao’s last dancer by Li Cunxin, A time to dance by Padma Venkatraman and Taking flight by Michaela DePrince) and novels from comedians like Seriously… I’m Kidding by Ellen Degeneres or How to Make White People Laugh by Negin Farsad. I’m giving you free hands, just remember – depressed, cannot stop reading awesome heavy novels, need something else though. And also, if you HAPPEN BY CHANCE to know a book about or featuring a person (not cis-gender white male) with ADHD, I’d love to hear about it. Thanks! --Emilie   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn! Thanks for a wonderful podcast! One of my favorite books is Sweetland by Michael Crummey. I enjoyed that it was set on an island, was very atmospheric, and beautifully dealt with loss and isolation. I also liked how nature was a large part of the book. I'm wondering if you have suggestions for something similar? Thanks so much for your time! --Carrie   Books Discussed The Other Lands (Acacia #2) by David Anthony Durham Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna The Summer Book by Tove Jansson I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erica L Sanchez (trigger warning: self-harm) Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai Saints and Misfits by S.K. In Wally Lamb's new novel I'LL TAKE YOU THERE, Felix, a film scholar who runs a Monday night movie club, encounters the ghost of a movie director from Hollywood's silent era who invites him to relive scenes from his past projected on the movie screen. It should come as no surprise that in today's interview, Mr. Lamb discusses the impact that myths retold in a modern light have had on his creative process. Also listen to Wally touch upon his decades as both an educator and student, his fear of starting each novel from a blank slate, and what invigorates him about today's publishing industry.

Connecticut might mean clapboard homes, leafy suburbs, and town centers that show off their roots to our colonial past. Unless you're thinking of southeastern Connecticut. The southeastern part of our state conjures images of casinos, submarines, and a blue-collar vibe that's just a little different from the rest of the state. It probably doesn't help that the Connecticut River literally cuts the state in half, separating southeastern sections from their wealthier brethren. Wally Lamb describes it as "more feisty than fashionable, more liverwurst than pate."Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Annie and Viveca plan to wed in the Oh family's hometown of Three Rivers, Connecticut, where gay marriage has recently been legalized. We Are Water is an intricate and layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection. Set in New England and New York during the first years of the Obama presidency, it is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.
