Today's guest is Hector Hughes, Co-founder of Unplugged, the cosy cabins designed to get city folk off their phones and into nature. Two years ago, with a growing frustration of his inability to switch off, Hector spent two weeks at a silent retreat in the Himalayas. His co-founder Ben is far less zen, but after realising he was clocking up 14 hours of screen time a day and seeing Hector return completely recharged, they thought... How can we get busy people to unplug from their devices and recharge without flying halfway around the globe? And so they got to work, constructing cabins made of wood just an hour outside of London. Guests are encouraged to bring very little, phones are locked away for the duration of their stay, and replaced with retro Nokia 3310 for emergencies only. In a world obsessed with digital devices, inundated with push notifications, answering emails and endlessly scrolling, we've lost the art of doing nothing. Tom has been the lead designer for various NBA activations across Canada, he has proudly worked in a team with Nike, pitching campaigns for shoe and sportswear launches, and he led the rebrand of Saracens Rugby Club – including everything from jerseys to stadium design. Tom believes that work should be enjoyed not endured, and no matter how experienced you are, you should always seek to learn new skills from experiences that you wouldn't get from ‘pixel pushing' behind a laptop. Tom also believes that anti hustle shouldn't be confused with ‘anti hard work' or ‘anti risk' – he's a risk taker, he says, who always tries to punch above his weight :-)Despite owning a specialised coffee company, Tom has ‘no preference' over how he drinks it – as long as it's hot, freshly ground and has enough for a second cup!In the episode, Tom refers to Kevin Carroll, a great inspiration of his as creative catalyst when Tom worked at Nike. But where do these new ways of thinking come from? Rosie believes that nothing can come from nothing – but copying is lazy. We love to see him take time for a mid-day sea swim, or a play in the garden with his son.But Matt is also a big fan of Gary Vaynerchuk, who could very well be single-handedly responsible for Hustle Culture. You can find Laura on YouTube where she makes videos about various challenges from doing 100 push-ups every day for 30 days or taking ice baths for a week. Laura has now received nearly two million views but more importantly, she is happier, more productive, and has more free time simply because she took a risk and is doing what she loves. At the start of her career, Laura owned her own beauty salon and would describe herself as a "materialistic shopaholic". She's also built her own marketing and mindset courses titled ‘Thoughtfully', for ambitious freelancers and creatives. Andrew has been in the fitness industry for over 15 years, starting his first instructing position aged just 16. Known for his mantra, ‘You Are Not Your Gym Membership', Andrew wants us to ease into the idea that not every workout needs to be more than forty minutes long. Today's guest is Nick Childs. Nick is a film director, creative director, writer, and producer probably best known for directing SuperBowl ads and featuring at Sundance & Tribeca film festivals. Recently the co-founder of revolutionary consumer insights platform DIRT, Nick describes himself as RELENTLESSLY CURIOUS, which we love. He strikes us as the kind of guy whose work and personal relationships intertwine, but in a good way – in a human way. When he's not researching the latest consumer neuroscience, we picture Nick on his NY back porch sipping an old fashioned. We hope you'll enjoy this incredible episode, hosted by Harriet Osborne and Joe Welstead.Subscribe to the podcast to enjoy our incredible lineup of interviews about hustle culture, work, success and happiness.
