Today's guest is adventurer and video creator, Laura Try. You can find Laura on YouTube where she makes videos about various challenges from doing 100 push-ups every day for 30 days or taking ice baths for a week. Laura started her channel just four months ago. It was a bold move, she had just under 900 subscribers at the time. But it was something she had thought about doing for 8 years! Laura has now received nearly two million views but more importantly, she is happier, more productive, and has more free time simply because she took a risk and is doing what she loves. At the start of her career, Laura owned her own beauty salon and would describe herself as a "materialistic shopaholic". But in 2015, she ditched her old existence, sold most of her belongings, and discovered a happier life living with fewer things and more experiences. And she has been trying new things ever since. We hope you enjoy this inspiring episode, hosted by Harriet Osborne and Joe Welstead.Subscribe to the podcast to enjoy our incredible lineup of interviews about hustle culture, work, success and happiness. Say hi to us at instagram.com/antihustle.hustleclubIntro music by Ant Henderson soundcloud.com/antphenderson
This week I'm talking to Laura Try. Once upon a time Laura was, in her words, a materialistic shopaholic. She was a successful beauty salon owner living a seemingly successful life. As she approached her 30th birthday she started to realise the focus on shiny, new things was not healthy and was a never-ending spiral she had to pull out of. With a dancing background, she always thought of herself as fit so she took up running and quickly realised she wasn't as fit as she thought! This focus on health and fitness however became a big channel for her energy and passion and eventually lead to her rowing around Great Britain and across the Atlantic Ocean - to put that into context, more people have been into space than have achieved this! Laura's message of ‘'just Try it'' is spot on and I know it will resonate with so many people.
Episode 9: Laura Try - From The Salon To The Sea Laura was a young successful business owner with everything she wanted, or so she thought. Laura made a few life changing decisions that saw her sell her business and go from the world of beauty to being makeup-less and covered in mud most weekends. From running, to rowing the Atlantic, Laura is truly an inspiration. Show notes: - Owning a beauty salon - From Buying to selling - Fit enough to run ‘To the bridge & back’? - Obstacle, fell & marathon running - From running to rowing the Atlantic - Humans are built to survive, hunt, gather, find, discover & thrive - Fundraising to row the Atlantic - Rowing around Great Britain - Could beauty salon Laura do a 24 hour adventure race? - Beauty Salon Laura versus Weekend Warrior Laura - Finding an Atlantic team - From being a successful business owner to finding a new purpose & the risks involved - Finding an Atlantic team - Rowing from La Gomera to Antigua (43 days in the Ocean!) - “We saw a whale” - Rowing partner Kate, Chase & Status and a ‘power hour’ - Plans for exploring the UK Episode web links: - https://lauratry.com/ - https://www.instagram.com/lauratryuk/?hl=en - https://twitter.com/lauratryuk?lang=en Wild Ones Podcast Links: - Website https://www.wildonespodcast.co.uk (https://www.wildonespodcast.co.uk/) - Patreon https://www.patreon.com/join/3482171/signup - Twitter https://twitter.com/wildonespodcast - Instagram https://instagram.com/wildonespodcast - Facebook https://m.facebook.com/wildonespodcast/
In 2018, Laura rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic ocean, unsupported, in a team of four other women. The challenge took 43 days to complete and when the crossed the finish line in Antigua they were the fastest female team in 2018. “A shopaholic, beauty salon owner - turned minimalist in training endurance athlete" Laura was part of the tough girl - 7 women - 7 challenges in 2017 and we followed her row around Great Britain, a rowing journey of 1,800 miles in a mixed team of four, which took 56 days to complete. We interviewed Laura 6 times throughout 2017 and Laura shared the whole journey with us, from having the idea, to turning this dream into a reality, the ups and the downs, the challenges faced and what she learnt along the way, she demonstrated resilience, determination, focus and a strong belief in herself and showed everyone what goes into making your dreams a reality. During this podcast episode, Laura shares more about what it was like to fulfil her ambition of rowing across the Atlantic ocean, she shares more about the training, the team, fundraising and the realities of being out on the water in such an extreme and challenging environment. Show notes How Laura changed her life at 30 Trying to buy happiness and not finding it Getting rid of stuff and filling her life with experiences Becoming a runner and doing ultra marathons Where the idea for rowing across the Atlantic came from Where is the Atlantic again?! Seeing the opportunity to row around GB Putting a video out on the internet asking to join a rowing team to row the Atlantic How 30 mins and making one decision changed her future Why she kept on going after this dream and how being stubborn helped her Fundraising £100K to row the Atlantic Joining a new team and team dynamics Going to work for Rannock Adventures and becoming part of the Ocean Rowing community 8 months of planning and preparation Having dedicated jobs How she balanced everything and why she just had to get on with it Getting up at 5am! Laura doesn’t particularly like rowing, which sounds crazy after you realize she rowed a boat 3,000 miles across the Atlantic with a team of three other women in just 43 days 2 hours and 20 minutes. On top of that, they managed to do this by rowing in 2-hour shifts, 24-hours a day, every single day. It’s not rowing that Luara loves, but a pure and unfiltered adventure and the push of the human spirit to experience it. We hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation around adventure and the unexpected joys and struggles when you put yourself out there.
