Ep 700: Are You Fit For The Future?

Recruiting Future with Matt Alder

Celebrating 10 years of Recruiting Future! Over the last 10 years, I've interviewed hundreds of TA Leaders as well as CEOs, thought leaders, and the people building the technology that drives the industry forward. Back in 2015, we thought the pace of change was super fast and that the level of disruption was off the scale with social and mobile technologies reshaping how we communicated. In some ways, we might think it was impossible back then to imagine the world we live in now, but many of the changes we see in TA today have been in the works for a long time. The speed of change in talent acquisition is governed by the tension between organizational inertia, which slows things down, and external events like the pandemic, which can cause things to move at lightning-fast speeds. The Generative AI revolution is most definitely in the latter category. We are on the cusp of the most significant changes to TA and recruiting we have ever seen. So, as a TA Leader, how do you manage that change and make sure you and your organization are fit for the future? Over the last few months, I've been using the power of AI to unlock the Recruiting Future archive and model the mindset and behaviours of the most successful TA leaders that I've interviewed. People who have changed how their organizations think about talent, who thrive on disruption as a catalyst for positive change, and who know how to use technology to enable their vision. These leaders all have four things in common. They use foresight to understand and shape the future, they build influence with the most senior stakeholders in their organisation, they think different to create innovative talent strategies and they use the impact of new technologies to accelerate change. Foresight, Influence, Talent and Technology = Fitt This episode features clips from interviews with two TA leaders, two CHROs, a Behavioural Scientist, and a Futurist talking about these four key areas and what you and your teams can do to be fit for the future. Featuring: Laszlo Bock, former CHRO at Google, on skills Lisa Montieth, Head of TA UK at HSBC on foresight Lyndsey Taylor, Global Head of HR Transformation at Brooks Automation, on influence Rory Sutherland, Vice Chair at Ogilivy UK, on talent Laura Coccaro, Chief People Officer at iCIMS on technology Kevin Wheeler, Future Of Talent Institute, on job displacement Follow this podcast on Apple Podcasts. Are you or do you identify as an expert? In her recent research, Penny Locaso was curious about women, who were clearly experts in their field, struggling to identify as such. So, as a Behavioural Scientist, Penny went to the evidence to understand; What is it that makes someone an expert, and why are so few women prepared to identify as one? What she found, was this misnomer in society – that experts were born. How can that be? Expertise is not something we are born with. This was the basis for Penny's recently released whitepaper, Hidden Figures, which highlights; women of impact are made not born. The importance of this being, women can see, it is possible for them to become an expert. This week's episode of the Power Of Women podcast with Di Gillett and Penny Locaso, may just challenge you to own it – and a warning, Penny doesn't hold back. Discover how playfulness, not just work, holds the key to creativity, resilience, and a more fulfilling life. In this engaging conversation, Rob Alvarez, founder of Professor Game, interviews Chris Marshall, a behavioral scientist and futurist who explores the power of playfulness as a pathway to human flourishing. Chris shares how his own experience with burnout led him to the transformative potential of playfulness, breaking down the essential pillars of curiosity, creativity, and connectedness. He offers practical insights into how individuals and organizations can cultivate a playful mindset, not by adding new skills, but by reconnecting with their natural, childlike curiosity and creativity. Whether you're looking to enhance your personal life or revitalize your workplace culture, Chris's advice provides a fresh perspective on how embracing uncertainty and letting go of rigid expectations can unlock a world of possibilities.   Chris Marshall is a Behavioural Scientist and Futurist whose specialist niche lies in helping individuals, teams and organizations to thrive in times of challenge, setback and disruption. He is also the founder of The Playfulness Institute, a not-for-profit organization that promotes research and strategies to build creative, engaged, dynamic organizations through playfulness as culture. Hi there,Have you ever worried about your trousers falling down whilst giving a public talk?Well I have, and it turns out that worrying about something happening can actually be worse for us that the actual thing happening…we're such weird and wonderful creatures, aren't we?Anyway, where am I going with this? Ah, yes, ‘trauma and shame'. These two interrelated things can have such a powerful impact on how we show up in the world that I wanted to learn more about them.So this week I chat with Behavioural Scientist from Deakin University, Hannah Bereznicki, about those very topics.I really hope you enjoy this conversation with Hannah.Big hugRichPS here's the link to check out the free course on Trauma, Neurodiversity and Shame that Hannah mentions (remember to select the limited access 4-week version so you don't have to pay). She also served as Non-Executive Director at British & Irish Lions, former Vice-Chair at UN Women (UK), Deputy Chair of The Football Association's Inclusion Advisory Board, and as an Advisor at World Athletics. In her new book ‘Tune In: How to Make Smarter Decisions in a Noisy World', Nuala argues that the most underrated risk facing humanity today is not economic, political or even climate risk – it's human decision risk. To combat that risk, we must “tune in”. Nuala provides us with the framework for how to do so.

Nuala Walsh is a former senior executive for a FTSE 100 company, behavioural scientist, Ted X speaker, non executive director (including the Football Association and British & Irish Lions) various businesses and charities,  author  of 'Tune In' and has been recognised as one of the most influential women in finance. Nuala has interviewed Presidents, top sports stars and executives so this episode focuses on her learning and experience as a senior leader with an insatiable curiosity to understand why people do what they do.In a noisy world, when we are rewarded by speed, the crisis is growing as regards a leaders inability to ensure that they are making safe, sound and ethical decisions that truly consider the wider implications. Nuala's Ted X talk was at the University of Salford and focused on 'How to overcome Indecision.' The key message is that indecision is temporary, hidden and is normally a state of mind. No leader admits they are indecisive. Leaders's can control it by understanding one of three barriers that may exist (1) the decision is too big (2) it's too far in the future and a decision doesn't need to be made (3) or its too hard a decision.  The solution is to chunk or split the decision into smaller and easier components whilst visualising the end result. 'Tune In' is all about how to make smarter decisions in a noisy world. Nuala describes that the world is very visual and fast paced with too much data coming at leaders from all directions but inside a leader's head is just as crowded and noisy as the external world. Nuala also describes 'Power Recognition' as one of 10 misjudgement traps. She explains that there are three categories which include 'power seekers', 'power holders' or  those who have 'lost or are afraid of losing power.' and she provides some interesting examples which highlights that many leaders have an obsession with identify, title and status. Leaders must consider their own deaf spots - ask yourself are you a tuned out or tuned in leader? If you are not tuned in you are missing signals that matter. Nuala has interviewed Presidents, the first man on the moon, top sports stars and executives and she has always been curious as to the human being element of their accomplishments. In this episode she shares some insights from her interview with former President Bill Clinton and top golfer José María Olazábal. Don't miss this episode.www.nualagwalsh.comTune In is available on Amazon Watch & Subscribe:

Why do we sometimes make bad decisions in relation to money and what can we do about it? My guest, Vishal George, is a Behavioural Scientist who has recently published a book called ‘Money Mindsets: Science-Based Stories to Rewire your Money Beliefs, Goals, & Habits'. In it, he explores that he way we behave when it comes to money, comes from beliefs about it, that we've adopted from our families, socio-cultural environment, and significant life events. They're almost like scripts that are handed to us. Yet, often, we don't even know who the author is of our scripts. What, asks Vishal, if we can rewrite our own money story? The idea behind his book isn't to change what we do with our money. Rather, it offers mindsets to change how we think about money. If we become aware of why we do what we do with our money, we can make sure our behaviours with it are aligned with our priorities.Since many incidents of huamn risk are caused by money, this topic is perfect for the show. In our discussion, we explore how Vishal came to write the book and what he hopes to acheive with it. I also get some thoughts from him on how this impacts his approach to business and what he's learend from his reasearch. And he turns the tables and asks me a question.Resources To learn more about Vishal, his compnay ‘Behavioural By Design' visit https://www.behaviouralbydesign.com/For more on his book ‘Money Mindsets' https://www.behaviouralbydesign.com/money-mindsetsTo read about Diversifi, the global Behavioural Science practitioner network that both Human Risk and Behavioural By Design are part of, visit https://www.diversifiglobal.com/Mount Taranki, the mountain Vishal is trying to climb: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_TaranakiThe Save The Change program that encourages saving: https://www.asb.co.nz/banking-with-asb/save-the-change.html

In this period of rapid transformation, he takes the view that the automotive industry is now selling behaviour change, not simply new models. David has an MA in Legal and Political Theory from UCL and an MSc in Demography & Public Health from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In our conversation, we talk about how growing up in two very different households  prevented him getting stuck in a single way of thinking. He shares how one particular text he read flicked a switch during his teens turning him into a much more engaged student. We also discuss how recognising his purpose to do something for the greater good served both as a compass steering his direction and a ticking clock encouraging him to move on when a role was no longer fulfilling that need. Two months before his daughter was born, David left the security of a corporate role and embarked on a start up journey and we reflect on his rationale for that and how that played out. Finally we turn our attention to the work he is doing now at SKIM, the need for us to accelerate our response to the climate crisis and the role that EV adoption plays in that.  David is a thoughtful, reflective individual with an interesting background engaged in work designed to benefit all of us. I am pleased to be able to introduce you to him and his work and I look forward to hearing what resonates with you.Links:Achieving Zero Emissions with More Mobility and Less MiningLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidvoxlinEmail: dvoxlin@skimgroup.comWebsite: https://skimgroup.com/Episode Directory on Instagram: @careerviewmirror  Email: cvm@aquilae.co.ukIf you enjoy listening to our guests career stories, please follow CAREER-VIEW MIRROR in your podcast app. Episode recorded on  10 February, 2023
