In a very personal episode of At The Barre (and our final for 2022), today I'm revealing what lead to my decision to sell my dance studio after 17 years. The process of making such a huge change the lives of my family and I certainly didn't come easily or quickly for me so I'm sharing all the factors that went into the decision-making process and why, ultimately, it lead to me handing over the studio to a new owner. I also reveal why I'm completely at peace with my decision depisite my studio forming such a huge part of who I was for 17 years. It's my hope this episode might shed some light on what can be a very emotional decision for studio owners and, if selling is something you're considering, how to navigate all the feelings that come with it.   CONNECT WITH ME  Email – jane@dancestudiosuccess.com.au  Instagram @dancestudiosuccess @dancearts, @dancestep00 Facebook Group ‘The Collective' (For Dance Studio Owners) https://bit.ly/3J0STC3  Learn more about DanceStep – Student Teacher Education Program www.dancestep.com.au    Loved this episode? Have you ever felt a little disappointed when, at the end of the year, the teachers in your studio receive praise and armfuls of gifts from students but you, as the studio owner, end up empty handed? Life as a studio owner can certainly be thankless at times and that's often because the majority of work we're doing is behind the scenes - think admin, logistics, training teachers, running a business! In this week's episode of At The Barre we're unpacking some simple strategies for dealing with those times when you feel unacknowledged in your studio. Repeat after me… “proft is not a dirty word”. In this episode of At The Barre we're talking all things money with studio owner Kaitlin Hague. As a studio owner, it can be difficult to reconcile your ‘calling' as a teacher and mentor with the financial reward that SHOULD come with running a successful business. On the daily, we can be faced with parents who wonder why they're being charged an ‘admin fee' on top of the costume or competition entry and even employees who might not fully ‘get' the actual cost of running a studio. This isn't just a conversation about numbers though and certainly not one just for studios of a certain size. We also talk mindset and how we can start changing our own relationship with money. Are you constantly trying to learn how to be more productive, and how to manage your time better? It seems like this is one of those things that is always a work in progress. A couple of years ago I uncovered a wonderful hack and it changed the way I work – I learnt that instead of managing time, to rather focus on managing energy. Ali and I talk about ‘doing the work' – for Ali that means being curious and asking questions, for me it means looking into the corners to uncover what is behind my responses or actions. Once upon a time we placed (quite expensive) advertisements in the local paper for the last 3 weeks of January, and the enquiries flooded in. 15 years on and my local paper doesn't exist anymore, and advertising, for the most part, is now digital. Keeping up with Facebooks changes, knowing what kind of ad to run and what kind of money to spend is exhausting. Do you know if your ad is performing well? And if not do you know what to tweak? Do you even WANT to know!? I've decided I don't, but I do. In that I don't want to know all the things, but I do want someone to do them for me. It's why I connected with Jennifer Randall from thejenniferrandall.com Jennifer has run a dance studio, which means she speaks our language. Happy New Year! Each year, about now, in between all the end of year / start of year hoopla, I start to think about a word that will guide me through the next year. Focusing on a word can help discover what excites you, explore what challenges you and provide room for making peace and growth. In 2016 my word for the year was JOY. It changed my life and I kept it for four years as it served me so well. Joy is now simply part of everyday practice for me. This year (and the one before) was my word was EASE, and despite the obvious challenges, I did honour it 90% of the time. My catch phrase became “what would this look like if it was easy” I asked members of my Facebook Group ‘The Collective' about their intention word, and share some of their answers (so if you need to steal some ideas, you're in the right place) What might your word for 2022 be?
