Innovating a Bright Future is a weekly interview show that delves into the future of energy. The show contains interviews with industry leaders, climate technology specialists, and entrepreneurs who have made it their purpose to implement new technologies and practices with the goal of fighting and reversing climate change. The main focus is technology. We look at new age, revolutionary ideas that have the potential to completely change the way our global society operates, from energy, to mobility, to development and infrastructure. The show looks at the impact these new solutions to age old problems will have, and what we can do to cultivate a sustainable future. *Get involved:* Become a member of the Alberta Youth Leaders for Environmental Education ( https://www.abcee.org/ayleee-teacher-signup ) Take a step in the right direction with Count Us In ( https://www.count-us-in.org/steps/ ) Learn more about climate change + climate action with TED Countdown ( https://countdown.ted.com/ ) *Socials* Instagram - https://instagram.com/innovatingabrightfuture?igshid=tq6tfg2l0s7 Twitter - Twitter.com/ainnovating ( https://twitter.com/ainnovating ) *Support the Show* Patreon ( http://patreon.com/innovatingabrightfuture ) - patreon.com/innovatingabrightfuture Buy sustainable clothing from TenTree ( http://www.tentree.com?ref=bb-33xyr8&utm_medium=ambassador&utm_source=brandbassador )
The textile industry is not only a prominent sector of society, but an essential one. Textiles are used for pretty much everything, not the least of which is your clothes. Unfortunately, this sector also has a pretty substantial carbon impact and an even bigger impact when considering other environmental factors. The combination of these two facts means that the textile industry absolutely has to decarbonize and modernize ASAP. We cannot simply eliminate textile use like we can with fossil fuel uses like cars. Instead, we need to focus on minimizing environmental impact by using new technologies and methods that make textile production more sustainable. So in this episode, we will explore the parts of the textile industry have the biggest impact on our planet, and how we can best prevent those consequences by making better decisions. Greenwashing involves techniques and rhetoric that companies use to convince the public that they are doing more good for the planet and its people than they actually are. It is a deception designed to extract more money from their customers by placating their worries with false promises. It misleads consumer decisions and slows climate action by promoting a false sense of security and encouraging complacency. Though there really is no way to prevent greenwashing, there are ways to uncover it and use that information to make better-informed decisions on what you buy and from whom. This episode will explain greenwashing using examples and make some suggestion son how to avoid being pulled in by it. This episode deals with some heavy material involving injustice, prejudice, and mistreatment. These topics and inextricably linked to climate change for a variety of reasons, which will be explained in the episode. We cannot solve climate change, if we are not united in this goal, and social issues like racism, sexism, and Indigenous oppression drive people apart and prevent effective action on climate. We must deal with this now, and do it quickly, which is why this episode is so important. At this show, we recognize that we will never understand the hardship of groups in which we do not have experience, but through this show, we try to learn and develop an understanding. We've finally gone through everything there is to cover for both the history and technology that Iceland is built on. In this final episode, we have to explore the Iceland of today. Because Iceland took care of some of the most significant climate issues decades ago, it's fascinating to see the next objectives, once the main ones are taken care of. Watching Iceland set ambitious climate and environmental goals, only to continue adjusting for more ambitious ones and encourage other nations to do the same is simply inspiring. This is why the world has to look to Iceland for guidance in the coming decades. They've succeeded once, and in the intervening decades, they have only expanded their environmental conscious to further support the health of our planet. I hope you enjoy this final episode of this series, and you come away feeling inspired and empowered by the country of Iceland. This is a short and sweet episode to accompany the technology episodes this week. This is a bit of a less intense one and has a slightly different format. This is a topic that is important to the show to get across, and as such has less data and journalism to wade through. Instead, this episode is more of a reinforcement of the importance of action. It illustrates the dangers that come with perfection in the climate space, and how best to solve perfectionism using a constant drive for change instead of an unending search for perfection. Hopefully, you get something helpful out of this episode, and you've been enjoying this season so far!Incrementalism is no longer an option-https://medium.com/swlh/climate-change-incrementalism-is-no-longer-a-viable-option-34bb9b0a2d82Innovating a Bright Future is the podcast that brings together technology and climate action in an engaging interview format that showcases some of the most interesting initiatives taking place across the globe. Climate sector buzzword and an absolute necessity for a sustainable future, electrification has become a popular topic in recent years. Electrification is the process of transitioning from the use of fossil fuels at the point of use, to electricity, with the most obvious example being buying an electric car. The goal of this episode is to delve into why electrification is an important step for climate action and to show you how we can do it. To summarize, electric mechanisms are generally more efficient than fossil fuel-based systems, and electrification is essential to reducing emissions in concert with the decarbonization of the energy grid. Iceland, Like Canada, has two colossal energy draws in homes and businesses, heat and electricity. Iceland has made the best possible use of its abundant geothermal energy by replacing fossil fuels for heat. Geothermal power, however, doesn't supply the lion's share of electricity in Iceland, Hydropower does. Hydropower started early in Iceland and has provided the majority of energy in Iceland since the early energy transition. In this episode, we're going to go through the process that Iceland took to get to the energy sector success they have today. We're also going to go through the general technologies that are most relevant to this sector, similar to what we did for the geothermal episode. We are officially entering the technology portion of this show. For the next two episodes, you will learn about the cornerstone technologies that Icealnd's energy infrastructure is built upon. This episode will give you an in-depth look at the progression of geothermal technology and how it was used in Iceland and across the world throughout its development. As the source of all building heat in Iceland, as well as a large part of their electricity production, geothermal energy has been integral to their success and could be an essential piece of the renewable energy grid in the coming decades. At the same time, the information being presented to the public is, in most cases, a sad sigh of defeat, irrational denialism, or frantic screaming that does no one any good. The fact is that climate change is happening, but it is not hopeless, and you are not powerless. TED speaker and climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said that “The most important thing you can do for climate change is talk about it.” so let's talk about it. In this episode we are continuing on with the story of Iceland, starting where we left off last episode, at World War 2. This episode goes into a little more detail on the development of actual energy systems in the country of Iceland throughout the last couple of decades. This is an interesting one because it illustrates the decisions that were made that led the country to the sustainable society that they have today, and why those decisions were made. The hope is that through this story, and through the ideas we explore in the later episodes, those factors and decisions can be extrapolated to the rest of the world in the hopes that similar steps can be taken toward climate action. That is, after all, the point of this season. This episode will finish up the history of Iceland and give you all the context you need to enjoy the episodes following this. To put it simply, this is one of the biggest barriers to climate action in today's society. An externality is most generally a consequence of human action that is not reflected in the decision-making processes related to that action. Carbon as an externality means that the GHG impacts of almost all human activity have been ignored by industry, governments, and the public alike, which is why it has taken decades for climate action to come to the forefront of society. We've known about the impacts of greenhouse gases on our atmosphere and planet for many years, tracking back all the way to Eunice Foote in 1856. Those impacts have simply been ignored or covered up in order to continue advancing modernization and industrialization. In this episode we attempt to explain why this happens and how to prevent it from now on. This is it!! We are finally back! After a longer-than-expected production run, the third season of Innovating a Bright Future is back. As explained in this episode, this season is all about the country of Iceland, and the story surrounding their energy systems and culture. I won't say much more about the rest of the season for the sake of suspense. This episode, however, delves into the early history of Iceland, illustrating the events that led to the Iceland of today. Icelandic history is split into two episodes for the show, so this one will cover everything up to the Second World War. We hope you have been looking forward to this season as much as we have! To start off this season's bonus lineup, we are looking at a topic that will pretty much infiltrate every episode that we do this season. The importance of collective action cannot be overstated, it is the everyday citizen's most effective method of enacting change on a scale that most individuals would be incapable of. As we explain more in-depth in the episode, collective action is the process of organizing for a cause, bringing people together around a common goal, and using the power of collective representation to force decision-makers to take action. It's pretty powerful stuff and has led to many a cultural revolution in the past, including the Suffragette movement and the movement for Civil Rights, as well as showing up in more modern movements like BLM and climate action. This stuff is absolutely essential to learn about if you want to take a meaningful role in preventing climate change, so let's learn! This is the final episode of Season Two, listen in to the beginning of this episode for a conclusion to the season before the beginning of the episode, along with a preview of what Season Three might look like!Corporations hold incredible power in the world of today. With international trade at an all-time high, the power of the internet, and interdependent countries trading trillions of dollars of goods, money talks. One of the strategies that has been in play for recruiting the corporations with control over a vast amount of the world's resources, is giving emissions a price by creating carbon trading markets. Carbon trading markets seek to price out carbon by limiting total emissions and punishing entities who don't adhere to that limit. This strategy could be the key to forcing some of the biggest polluters on the planet to start taking action on climate change, but could carbon markets instead provide a loophole for pollution-reliant companies to exploit? This week's episode is not the first time we've put hydrogen under the microscope to see both how it works and how we can use it to promote renewable energy usage worldwide. Today, however, Simon Brugger from Cellform is taking me inside the hydrogen fuel cell, to show me one of their most important parts - the bipolar plate. You'll hear why these metallic plates are important in the episode, but Simon and his team at Cellform are reimagining what is possible at both the micro and production level of these essential hydrogen components so that we can ensure the future of the hydrogen industry is as efficient as possible. The establishment of functioning carbon markets, and carbon trading systems could provide the incentive we need to push large countries and companies to work hard at mitigating emissions. The markets that we have now aren't yet stable enough or widespread enough for them to be effective at providing that incentive. On today's episode with Gael from Mission Zero Tech, we are taking a look at the future of carbon capture and how that will interact with the larger energy and consumer markets that we have well established today. We have talked about hydrogen before on this show. We have gone over how we can make hydrogen and how we can convert hydrogen to and from energy pretty easily. What we haven't discussed is what specific application hydrogen could be useful for; shipping, energy storage, and simulating fossil fuels. Today, Eduardo Pereira from Clearenergy will lay out the future that he sees for hydrogen, and how it can be coupled with carbon capture to create synthetic fuels capable of replacing the fossil fuels we use today. What will happen if we can't meet the maximum of 1.5 degree target set by the IPCC? What will happen if it warms up by 2, 3, or 5 degrees? Where are these numbers even coming from?! Well first of all they're coming from people who have studied climate their entire lives so we can be fairly sure that they are at least close to the mark. Second of all, a lot of these estimations and goals come from tipping points, the topic of today's episode. Tipping points can be thought of as the point of no return, there are multiple planetary systems that are on the edge of their tipping points, and now we have to work hard to mitigate our emissions so that we don't push our planet over the brink. Agriculture is one of the highest emitting sectors of our world. There are many aspects of agriculture that emit dangerous greenhouse gases, meat production costs tons of water and emits billions of tons of CO2 and methane every year. Fertilizers that are used to grow crops for food and to feed animals generate other greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide which can be hundreds of times worse for the climate than carbon dioxide. Agriculture also provides one of the most opportunity-rich fields to implement new technologies, connective technology, and regenerative practices based on indigenous methods to greatly reduce emissions worldwide. We haven't really had the chance to focus our attention on a company that is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as the sole driver of their business model, aside from Blue X Energy. Frost Methane's CEO and my guest today Olya Irzak is here to tell me about how carbon markets and cap and trade systems work, along with their technology to mitigate methane emissions. These systems are fascinating because they could be the solution to the economic challenge of climate mitigation, if and only if it is used correctly and carefully monitored. The power held by students and young people is increasing everyday as they push for urgent climate action. As the next generation, they realize that the work ahead of them to stave off the worst impacts of climate change is immense and the sooner they can make an impact the better. Nuha Shaikh and Hanna Woldegebriel, both students from the University of Calgary have set out to make their impact through Project 90, a student organization dedicated to implementing engineering projects in collaboration with non-profits such as HopEthiopia. For this episode we are taking a look at one of their latest projects, providing better access to online learning, powered by solar panels in Harba Chulule, Ethiopia. Not all of the natural power of the world can be found above ground. There is actually an incalcuble wealth of energy that's beneath our feet everyday, almost everywhere you go. Geothermal energy, like solar and wind, is a completely renewable resource, and can provide energy for years without emitting any fossil fuels. Unlike solar and wind, there is no intermittency, there is no need for batteries, or energy storage because geothermal energy flows constantly. Geothermal is one of the best options we have to provide consistent output of renewable energy. One of the biggest and most impactful issues of our time is water shortages. Across the world, developing countries especially, have struggled with water scarcity for years. Many nations have been unable to provide clean, drinkable water to their citizens, never mind enough water to irrigate farmland or start producing local products to feed the economy. With transportation consisting of a sizable chunk of global carbon emissions, it is abundantly clear that we must decarbonize our transportation systems in order to mitigate climate change. One of the most effective ways that we can do that is ensuring that everyone, especially those with less financial stability in developing countries, has access to safe, reliable, and low emissions transportation. Batteries batteries batteries! At this show, we can never get enough of them. Each battery has its own niche though and Natron Energy has certainly found its niche. In my interview with Jack Pouchet, we talk about the potential of Natron's batteries to have a pivotal role in supporting essential energy services such as hospitals and data centers. Their batteries are unique and proprietary and use chemical components which have not been used in commercial battery production before. Natron's new batteries are also making an effort to be sustainable and source common natural resources instead of the rare earth minerals used in lithium-ion batteries.Natron Website - https://natron.energy/Innovating a Bright Future is the podcast that brings together technology and climate action in an engaging interview format that showcases some of the most interesting initiatives taking place across the globe. From October 31 to November 12 of 2021, 197 countries of the world met in Glasgow Scotland at COP26 to discuss climate change, emissions targets, mitigation, and collaboration. It was the first meeting like this since 2019, so the importance of the event was further emphasized. The world held it's breath as the conference came to a close, and breathed a sigh of relief when the COP26 Glasgow Climate Pact was unveiled. In this bonus episode, we're going to look at what exactly happened, what it means for the climate in the coming years, and where we are at as a planet as we try to pull ourselves free of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Concrete production emits almost 3% of the global carbon emissions every year. That is only one portion of the total industrial emissions including steel, aluminum, and clothing. Solutions to these fields are essential to mitigate climate change. The majority of emissions from concrete production don't even come from burning fossil fuels, but the method of creating the concrete itself. That's what Cody Finke and his startup Brimstone Energy are working to fix. They are pioneering a new process to create concrete that lowers the production emissions significantly. The season finale of S1!! This episode is probably my favorite of the season, where we're talking all about batteries. With energy storage being such a pivotal issue and batteries being one of the most promising candidates for solving that issue, the development of batteries designed to handle grid scale applications is essential. That's exactly what StorEn Technologies is working on. This episode features Carlo Brovero, the founder and CEO of StorEn, and he tells me all about his Vanadium flow battery, a new method of battery storage that eliminates the worst issues plaguing lithium ion batteries. What an episode to end on, I hope you'll be back next season! We must transition from fossil fuel power plants like coal and natural gas, to renewable resources like solar, wind, and hydro. That's what Ignacio Fernandes is here to talk about. Having completed hundreds of megawatts of renewable energy and hydrogen projects, he knows this topic very well. As Ignacio will make very clear in this episode, the challenges to carbon free electricity generation are great, but it's not impossible, and it is an absolutely necessary task. If there is one solution to climate change that I would say needs the most further research it would be carbon capture. We need to put some energy into this in order to determine exactly how much carbon capture we should be using and how we should be using it, whether it be eliminating emissions from natural gas or pulling carbon dioxide straight out of the air. There is a wide variety of opinions on all of these pieces, so to get a better idea of exactly what carbon capture is and what it does, I talked to Greg Kist, the co-founder of Blue X Energy. His company Blue X Energy is focussing on finding the best places to store carbon dioxide once we capture it, but he gave me a great rundown on the basics of carbon capture and why it could be the one thing that we need to get to carbon neutrality by 2050. Maybe with carbon capture we can continue to use a fossil fuel like natural gas, or through reforming natural gas into hydrogen and capturing the leftover CO2, the market for hydrogen will boom. Carbon capture in the ways that it's being talked about today is fairly new, and absolutely fascinating to talk about. Politics. Love them or hate them, climate policies on local, national, and international levels are required if we are to successfully integrate renewable energy and all of the other climate technologies talked about in this show, and prevent the worst effects of climate change. In this bonus episode we are going through the most essential pieces of climate policy in Canada, the US, the EU, and internationally. Although I personally find the technology side of climate action much more interesting, it is important to note that putting climate action into law ensures that it is being paid proper attention to by everyone and I mean EVERYONE, because it is much more difficult to dodge a law than a recommendation. I hope you find yourself learning from this episode, and if you listen all the way through there is a fun little surprise at the end you don't want to miss! While the Paris Agreement was being forged back in 2015, developing countries shocked the world by leading the way and continually pushing for more ambition out of the Agreement. Developing countries have much lower impacts on climate than more industrialized countries, but, developing countries will suffer much more under climate change than the rest. So we know that developing countries have the drive to change and ensure that they are doing their part to mitigate climate change, but they still require many resources scarce to them; money, natural resources, and perhaps most importantly, expertise. Olaniyi Oyeniyi, my guest this episode takes me through the challenges that countries are facing in sustainably developing and what we need to do to ensure that every nation can develop in a way that is climate friendly. It is undeniable that electric cars are the way of the future for transportation and mobility. The problem with electric cars is that right now, the majority of electricity produced around the world comes from fossil fuels which kinda defeats the purpose. We need to generate electricity without the burning of fossil fuels. Enter CAPSolar. Samy Benhamza and his company CAPSolar are developing modular solar power arrays that produce electricity to be used in electric vehicles that can be placed directly on top of cars or built directly into the roofs of cars. It is not simply wiring solar panels into your electric engine though, and Samy will tell you all about what it takes to transition electric cars into the realm of 100% renewable energy, all the time. Billions of tons of recyclable material and millions of dollars are sent into landfills or the ocean every year because recycling costs money. As essential as recycling is to reduce emissions from producing new material as well as disposing of waste, the system as it is now is not enough. AMP Robotics is using artificial intelligence and robotics to improve speed, accuracy, and ultimately affordability of recycling. Carling Spelhaug from AMP Robotics walks me through how their system works and why automation in recycling is absolutely essential to reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Its time to celebrate! Well maybe not celebrate but to hope. The last bonus episode was a really tough listen so I made it my goal to make this one as easy as possible. This one is all about why taking action, creating change in our global systems is not just essential but beneficial to absolutely everyone. It can be hard to be positive sometimes because climate action is still largely painted as a cost, but it's not. By changing the way the world works in ways that reduce emissions, we will create jobs, increase an individual's control over their own life, raise quality of life and develop new technology that we can't even imagine yet. We don't have to choose between saving the planet and paying the rent, we can have both and so much more. Solar energy is one of the technologies that will be an important part of the global transition to renewable energy, however there is another technology that partners perfectly with solar power - wind. Wind energy is more active at the times when solar isn't at night, cloudy days, and winter months. This episode is a conversation with Ken Kotalik, the Director of Global Sales for Primus Wind. Primus Wind manufactures small off grid wind turbines that generate clean energy in applications that do not connect to the grid. Their turbines are simple and efficient and coupled with solar, creating a renewable energy system capable of generating power in a variety of conditions. Wind is incredibly important in making renewable energy available around the clock, and Primus is making that happen. Ken Kotalik tells me about how Primus' turbines work and even more about why wind energy is essential for more widespread implementation of carbon free energy. Cities are becoming more densely populated as the global population increases and more people move to cities for jobs. This naturally means that cities will become the place that people spend a majority of their time so we need to ensure that cities are built to support the population. While infrastructure development has historically been controlled almost entirely by the municipal government, my guest for this episode has a different vision. Nic Leblanc is developing a new online interface that allows everyday citizens to decide on what they want in their communities. He calls his new platform My Living City and it may just revolutionize the system of city development. Electricity is essential to a country's development. In developing countries such as Ethiopia, connecting to a nation wide grid is incredibly expensive, and energy infrastructure can be a target for conflict and violence. Duncan Lucas is a civil engineering student attending the University of Calgary and he has been working on bringing electricity to energy impoverished communities in Ethiopia for two years now. He and his team have been designing a solar microgrid for the community of Dangla in Ethiopia. Microgrids are fascinating because they allow small communities or other energy systems that can be isolated, such as recreation centers, churches, and campuses, to generate, transmit, and utilize all of their energy in one place. This episode will go into what exactly a microgrid is, as well as their role in making renewable energy available for all, even those who do not connect to larger scale energy projects. I had no idea that electric motors consume half of global electricity. I also had no idea how outdated the majority of our motor technology is today. Turntide is changing that. Turntide is a company working on incredible new motor technology that uses much simpler electronics that allow for more versatile and efficient energy use. Eric Meyerson is the VP of marketing at Turntide and he talked me through how their motors work and it is actually so incredibly cool. Eric and I also talk about interconnectivity, the Internet of Things, and automation, all things you have probably heard of but maybe don't completely understand, which would make you exactly like me. Turntide's combination of new motor technology and their use of interconnectivity is revolutionizing how we use electric motors, and how we operate large buildings or industrial systems in general. This episode is a very tough listen, but so incredibly important, all about how we're destroying the planet, and what that actually means for us humans. The thing is though, if you are at all concerned about climate change, you have to know about these consequences. As much as I love the polar bears and having clean forests, climate change is about more than just nature. The effects of climate change will be felt all over the world, regardless of where you live or how far away it seems. You'll have to listen to the episode to find out how and why, but there are millions, maybe BILLIONS of human lives at stake here. Climate change is quite possibly the biggest challenge the human species has ever faced, but like me, you probably don't know why that is. Listen to this short bonus episode to hopefully find the answers to all of your questions. If not, let's talk about it! Energy storage is absolutely essential in order to implement renewable energy on a large scale. Energy storage allows for electricity produced during high production times, to be used in low production times, when the grid may need more energy than it is producing. Konstantin Pushkin, the CEO of AL Technologies may be on to something in his pursuit of aluminum energy storage. He told me all about how it's resilient and never loses its charge and could be a large scale contributor to the future of how our energy systems operate. Physical forms of fuel such as aluminum and hydrogen make energy storage easy, and I can't wait to see how both prospects develop. You can find AL Technolgies and Konstantin himself at the links below.AL Technologies Website - https://al-technologies.comKonstantin's Website - https://konstantinpushkin.com/ Innovating a Bright Future is the podcast that brings together technology and climate action in an engaging interview format that showcases some of the most interesting initiatives taking place across the globe. We need to implement widespread renewable energy, but you might not know that renewable energy projects like solar and wind are already being built around the world, with notable success. Jesse Laine is a renewable energy project director and implementation expert. He tells me about his experience in leading large scale solar plants in California which are now providing sustainable electricity to thousands of homes. We also discuss his work on commercial solar in Ontario and behind the meter energy storage that reduces energy costs for businesses and industry. Batteries seem to be one of the biggest barriers to widespread implementation of renewable energy. Right now we primarily use lithium ion batteries, which have served us well for things like personal devices for years now, but they have their issues just like any other technology. The materials used in lithium ion batteries are scarce, expensive, and the opposite of environmentally friendly to extract. So if we are going to use more and more lithium ion batteries, we can't continue to rely on mining alone to supply the essential materials. That's where battery recycling and Li-Cycle come in. Li-Cycle is implementing innovative new processes to recycle the most important components of a battery in a way that far and away surpasses the costs of mining, as well as other battery recycling methods. Chris Biederman is the Chief Technology Officer at Li-Cycle, and he talked me through the importance of battery recycling and what Li-Cycle does differently. Biden has recently released his American Jobs Plan, which is a $2.3 trillion dollar proposal to reinvent the way that the US operates. This bonus episode goes through what the bill entails and what it means for the future of the US. The Plan has been declared one of the most ambitious climate plans put forth by heavily industrialized countries, even though climate isn't in the name. I usually try to stay away from politics on this show, but bonus episodes like this one will occasionally look at politics because as tiresome as it can seem sometimes, it takes political, systemic changes to make a real difference. Even though I'm not American, I recognize the important role that the US can play in taking action against climate change, so regardless of your political beliefs or even where you live, it's important to have an idea of what the leaders of our world are thinking. Check out the links below for more information on the Plan, as well as some cool information on Iceland (listen until the end), and an episode from How To Save a Planet that goes through the Plan in more depth. The American Jobs Plan - https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/03/31/fact-sheet-the-american-jobs-plan/ A focussed breakdown of the Plan - https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2021-04-22/three-decades-of-us-climate-pledges-and-inaction How To Save a Planet episode - https://gimletmedia.com/shows/howtosaveaplanet/o2hr94m/is-bidens-jobs-plan-a-skinny-green-new?utm_source=gimletWebsite&utm_medium=copyShare&utm_campaign=gimletWebsite Links to learn more about Iceland - https://www.youtube.com/user/inspiredbyiceland https://visiticeland.com/article/renewable-energy Innovating a Bright Future is the podcast that brings together technology and climate action in an engaging interview format that showcases some of the most interesting initiatives taking place across the globe. Transportation of goods and services is one of the most heavily polluting sectors on a global scale. The surprising thing is though, it's the small trips to the grocery store, and to the soccer fields that are the least efficient. It seems kind of obvious that you don't need to be driving your 6 seater SUV to pick up your mail but we still do it because we don't have another option. That is finally starting to change. In this episode I talk to Robert Hoevers from Squad Mobility about his company's new age solution to this problem - the micro car powered by the sun. Squad Mobility will be implementing their cars in much the same way as other micro-mobility such as shared electric bikes and scooters, making short range transportation convenient, efficient, and most importantly, emission free. When I think futuristic things, solar cars are among the Top 10 things that spring to mind, so this conversation was honestly just so fascinating to me and I hope it is to you as well. Lorenzo Russo is a nanotechnologist and materials engineer working at Enapter. Enapter is a company working on modular, small size electrolyzers, which allows for the creation of hydrogen from just water and electricity. Hydrogen is a fuel, and is similar in its basic functions to natural gas, except it has absolutely no carbon emissions. Hydrogen represents an incredible opportunity and a technology that is going to be at the core of the transition to renewable energy on a worldwide scale, from mobility, to long term energy storage without batteries. If you're interested in what nanotechnology is, this is the episode for you, as Lorenzo merges the science behind electrolysis with the fascinating world of nanotech.
