China is becoming ever more important to global affairs. But the covid-19 pandemic, as well as political and geopolitical challenges, mean that Europeans' ability to engage with Chinese thinkers and understand their views and ideas about the world has diminished. In this mini-series, Mark Leonard and Janka Oertel will try to change that by engaging in conversations with some of the best Chinese academics, researchers, writers, and journalists on diverse topics in Chinese internal debates that matter most to Europeans. --- In this second episode, our host Janka is joined by Liu Hongqiao, an independent policy consultant and award-winning journalist focusing on China's emergence and its global impact on the environment, biodiversity, energy, and the climate. Together, they will discuss China's role at COP27 and the country's outlook on its energy transition. How is China doing in regard to its ‘dual-carbon' goals set for 2030 and 2060? What kind of climate narratives can be found in China? And finally, where does the country see itself on the global stage of climate policy and what does this positioning mean for the rest of the world? Today, a special TED Countdown conversation for you! In June 2022, TED's climate initiative, Countdown, launched its Dilemma Series: events designed to look at some of the “knots” in the climate change space, where diverging positions have stalled progress and solidified into an inability to collaborate across differences.  What we offer today is one of the conversations recorded as part of that event between Outrage + Optimism host Tom Rivett-Carnac, and academic, writer, and author Professor James Dyke.  The event focused on the question: Is there a role for carbon credits in the transition to a fair, net-zero future?  We hope that Tom and James' ‘agreeable disagreement' on this often divisive issue will be taken as an invitation to listen deeply, keep an open mind and get a little wiser on a complex topic. Please follow the links below to view the fantastic film produced by the TED Countdown team, and gain a greater insight and understanding on the topic of carbon credits but also the process of holding space for such conversations to take place.  Carbon credits is a contentious subject that prompted some discomfort, disagreement and, ultimately, a renewed sense of possibility. Welcome to another episode of Outrage + Optimism, where we examine issues at the forefront of the climate crisis, interview change-makers, and transform our anger into productive dialogue on building a sustainable future. First up we have some exclusive news... *drumroll*... We are excited to announce that Outrage + Optimism is now part of the TED Audio Collective! This news represents an exciting continuation of the collaboration between our organizations, which began with our strategic partnership with TED Countdown. Back to this special COP 27 episode... co-hosts Christiana Figueres and Paul Dickinson talk long-distance with co-host Tom Rivett-Carnac, who's on the ground at the COP27 UN climate conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Also, Christiana interviews Simon Stiell, the latest Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the podcast announces a new partnership with TED Audio Collective. First, Tom calls in from COP27, where the top item on the agenda is “Loss and Damage,” which refers to the historical responsibility of industrialized nations for the climate crisis and the moral case for compensating poorer and developing countries suffering the brunt of its many devastating effects. What is fair, really? Next, Christiana discusses getting things done, accountability, and the power of meditation with UNFCCC Secretary Simon Stiell. They expand on COP27 and the role of oil and gas companies in the conference. You won't want to miss this engaging conversation. The team closes with their reflections on the midterm elections in the United States (votes are still being counted) and what a divided Congress means for President Biden's climate agenda. And finally, producer Clay brings us the goods on O+O's new partnership with the TED Audio Collective and today's tune from British guitar-goddess and artist, Anna Calvi: “Don't Beat the Girl Out of My Boy.” Enjoy the show!   NOTES AND RESOURCES  To learn more about our planet's climate emergency and how you can transform outrage into optimistic action subscribe to the podcast here. Well, in Gavin McCormick's case he was convinced to attend a hackathon which led him to discover automated emissions reductions (AER) and in relatively short order to work with Al Gore to measure all of the world's emissions in real time through Climate TRACE. In the first episode of season three, Gavin shares his story of how he become the co-founder and Executive Director of WattTime and the lessons he learned along the way. Gavin McCormick is cofounder and Executive Director of WattTime, the not-for-profit tech startup that invented Automated Emissions Reduction (AER) technology. AER is software that causes IoT devices  He is also cofounder and Electricity Co-Lead of Climate TRACE, an open collaboration between over 50 collaborating nonprofits, tech companies, and universities.  Climate TRACE teams are applying computer vision and machine learning to satellite imagery and big data to monitor all major sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world.  Gavin dropped out of a PhD program in environmental economics at UC Berkeley to found WattTime. In 2021, Climate TRACE was named a TIME Magazine invention of the year. You can learn more about WattTime on their website, https://www.watttime.org/. What will happen if we can't meet the maximum of 1.5 degree target set by the IPCC? What will happen if it warms up by 2, 3, or 5 degrees? Where are these numbers even coming from?! Well first of all they're coming from people who have studied climate their entire lives so we can be fairly sure that they are at least close to the mark. Second of all, a lot of these estimations and goals come from tipping points, the topic of today's episode. Tipping points can be thought of as the point of no return, there are multiple planetary systems that are on the edge of their tipping points, and now we have to work hard to mitigate our emissions so that we don't push our planet over the brink. We stay away from divisive politics and meaningless numbers with no context, and instead, I interview climate action leaders implementing revolutionary ideas that are helping to reduce our impact on the world around us. I've noticed through my own experience that the number of people concerned about climate change is growing quickly. At the same time, the information being presented to the public is, in most cases, a sad sigh of defeat, irrational denialism, or frantic screaming that does no one any good. The fact is that climate change is happening, but it is not hopeless, and you are not powerless. TED speaker and climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said that “The most important thing you can do for climate change is talk about it.” so let's talk about it. Let's learn about solar energy and battery storage, let's dig into green hydrogen, and wind, and the power of water, and the importance of sustainable energy. Let's learn and let's discuss. We aren't doomed, but we have to work hard in order to keep climate change from wreaking real havoc on our world. And that means we can take it out of the sky and put it in all these other places and actually fix the problem.” (Gabrielle) “You can use stories to connect individuals with people who don't think in the way that you do in a way that they enjoy. Cities — if they are designed to be sustainable, equitable and joyous — are the best hope for humanity, says architect, author and TED speaker, Vishaan Chakrabarti, on the latest episode of TEDxLondon's Climate Curious. This self-confessed city-lover aka ‘Professor Skyscraper' is putting the joy back into our cities by designing communities that are cheaper to live in, easier to get around, and offer more collective, inter-generational and diverse living. Vishaan shares his vision for changing the narrative when it comes to ‘green cities' – think less urban parks and more clean electrical grids and goldilocks homes – not too big, not too small – just right! Tune in with Maryam Pasha and Ben Hurst live from TED Countdown to learn why cities, as Vishaan puts it, are a bit like acupuncture; “a small move can make a really big difference.” Read more: https://tedxlondon.com/podcast/climate-curious-how-cities-are-redefining-what-it-means-to-be-green/

In what world would stockpiling something so deadly it threatens the future of human survival on planet Earth, make sense? Yep, that's right, THIS planet! We're currently on track to produce 120% more oil, coal and gas (aka fossil fuels) in the next decade than the world can ever burn. So why are we still stockpiling it? In this jaw-dropping episode of Climate Curious by TEDxLondon, environmental campaigner, Tzeporah Berman, reveals the shocking grip the fossil fuel industry has on our governments, economies, societies… and even our minds, and what we can do to fight back. Tune in with co-hosts Maryam Pasha and Ben Hurst live from TED Countdown to learn about how we can think and act more like citizens and less like consumers, why fossil fuel polluters want us to feel guilty about our lifestyle choices, how ‘groupthink' made us all focus on emissions instead of production, and as Tzeporah puts it, why “we don't need better light bulbs, we need better laws.” Watch Tzeporah's TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/tzeporah_berman_the_global_treaty_to_phase_out_fossil_fuels Sign the Fossil Fuel Non-ProliferationTreaty: https://fossilfueltreaty.org/
