A Gaza l'offensiva non si ferma: vengono colpite anche aree dichiarate “sicure” come Muwasi, i bambini continuano a morire, la fame è diventata struttura, l'acqua è contaminata, le malattie corrono. È il risultato di un assedio che ha trasformato la sopravvivenza in concessione politica. Nel frattempo riemergono le parole dell'ex capo dell'intelligence militare Aharon Haliva: per ogni vita spezzata il 7 ottobre “cinquanta palestinesi devono morire”, “anche se sono bambini”, “serve una Nakba ogni tanto”. Non sono scivoloni: sono la verbalizzazione di una dottrina. Il castigo collettivo come metodo, la morte civile di un popolo come prezzo accettabile. Quando il lessico della vendetta diventa politica, il genocidio smette di essere un'accusa e diventa la logica conseguenza. What does it mean to truly witness someone else's pain? In this episode, Zvi Hirschfield and Rabbi Dr. Daniel Reifman explore the Book of Eicha through the lens of bearing witness to tragedy. Yet our culture warriors downgrade his searing witness to Auschwitz into just another lesson in victimhood or, worse, try and downplay the significance of the holocaust into one of many. This lecture we restores Levi's grim brilliance – and expose today's relativists who would rather talk about “systems” than evil.
Can we ever really know Primo Levi? We know his books, of course, especially If This Is A Man, the astonishing account of his survival from Auschwitz. But what, then, of his apparent suicide in 1987? How can a man who miraculously survived Auschwitz take his own life forty years later? That's one of the questions that Joseph Olshan asks in Milo's Reckoning, a new novel about Levi, suicide and our own unknowability. Olshan, himself deeply affected by Primo Levi's death when he first heard the news during a newspaper interview in Italy, explores the profound mystery of human nature and the limits of what we can truly understand about others, even those, like Levi, whose experiences have been supposedly laid bare in their autobiographical work. 5 takeaways1. Suicide is often impulsive, not premeditated Most suicides happen in the spur of the moment when people "snap" under pressure, rather than being carefully planned decisions. The majority don't even leave notes, contrary to popular belief.2. La première chose qu'on dit à ces jeunes qui jouent, c'est "Mettez de la vie dedans!", c'est ce que voulait Jorge Semprún. Il était important de mettre en avant les deux langues : Jorge Semprún était parfaitement germanophone et c'est peut-être ce qu'il lui a permis de rester en vie. Résistant pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il est déporté à Buchenwald en septembre 943. Après la libération et la guerre, il milite au sein du Parti Communiste espagnol qu'il quitte en 1964. Il devient ministre de la Culture en Espagne de 1988 à 1991. Il a consacré une grande partie de son œuvre à la mémoire, à ses mois passés dans le camp de Buchenwald mais aussi à son engagement pour lutter contre les régimes totalitaires. El símbolo más reconocido y perdurable del holocausto es el campo de concentración de Auschwitz-Birkenau. Se encontraba ubicado cerca de la ciudad de Oświęcim, en el sur de la Polonia ocupada. Auschwitz comenzó como un simple campo de concentración para encarcelar a prisioneros de guerra. Los alemanes se encontraron en 1939 durante la invasión de Polonia con unos barracones que habían pertenecido en el pasado al ejército austrohúngaro, y los aprovecharon como centro de detención. Pero, dada su ubicación y lo bien conectado que estaba por ferrocarril con el resto de Europa, pronto evolucionó hacia un complejo de exterminio y trabajo esclavo de dimensiones gigantescas. A lo largo de la guerra fue expandiéndose con nuevos campos como el de Birkenau, especializado en las labores de exterminio, y el de Monowitz, creado por las empresa alemana IG Farben para explotar a los reclusos en régimen de trabajo esclavo. En torno a estos tres grandes complejos se extendía una abigarrada red de subcampos. Oficialmente era un campo de trabajo y así fue como nació de manos de las SS en 1940. Para ello los nazis dispusieron en la entrada del más antiguo de todos un arco con un lema que decía "Arbeit macht frei" ("El trabajo libera”). Pero a Auschwitz los prisioneros iban más a morir que a trabajar. Con el avance de la guerra y la adopción de la solución final por parte de las autoridades alemanas, se transformó en la pieza central de la máquina de exterminio nazi. Millones de personas, en su mayor parte judíos, pero también gitanos, prisioneros de guerra polacos y soviéticos, presos políticos, homosexuales y discapacitados, fueron deportados a Auschwitz desde toda la Europa ocupada. Hacinados en vagones de ganado, su inmensa mayoría llegaban a este lugar sin saber el destino que les esperaba. Al bajarse del tren, eran sometidos a una brutal selección: los considerados aptos para el trabajo eran enviados a los campos de trabajo forzado, donde eran explotados hasta la extenuación. Los demás, la gran mayoría, eran conducidos directamente a las cámaras de gas, donde eran asesinados con Zyklon B y luego incinerados en hornos crematorios. Las condiciones de vida en Auschwitz eran inhumanas. Hambre, enfermedades, frío extremo, hacinamiento y trabajos extenuantes eran parte de la rutina diaria. La violencia y la crueldad de los guardias de las SS eran omnipresentes y la muerte acechaba en cada rincón. A pesar del horror cotidiano hubo resistencia y solidaridad dentro de sus muros. Se dieron de bruces con miles de prisioneros enfermos y moribundos. Fue entonces cuando el mundo conoció la magnitud del horror: montañas de cadáveres, cámaras de gas, crematorios, testimonios desgarradores de los supervivientes. Auschwitz se convirtió en un símbolo del genocidio y una advertencia sobre los peligros del odio, el racismo y la intolerancia. Hoy en día, Auschwitz es un gran museo al aire libre para que las generaciones futuras no olviden lo que sucedió allí. Un evento che fa diventare il ricordo di una bisnonnax, che aveva passato alcuni giorni in un manicomio, quasi un'ossessione: ricostruire la sua storia diventa un'urgenza. Un evento che stimola riflessioni su come la scrittura, ossia l'arte di creare l'immaginario, possa cambiare dopo aver vissuto l'esperienza di un'altra creazione, la nascita di un figlio. La donna in questione è la scrittrice Nadia Terranova che racconta tutto questo nel romanzo "Quello che so di te" (Guanda). Fin da bambina gli è apparsa in sogno la bisnonna Venera, ma è nel momento in cui diventa madre che il legame con questa bisnonna diventa prepotente: "Sono abituata a pensare a Venera come al mio doppio, un fantasma vivo, un assalto alla mia coscienza". Da qui la necessità di capire come e perché questa bisnonna aveva passato alcuni giorni in un manicomio nel 1928. Un'indagine portata avanti attraverso archivi e documenti che cercano di far luce sulle voci che erano state invece tramandate in famiglia, quella che l'autrice chiama la "mitologia familiare" che a volte svela, a volte nasconde, a volte addirittura depista. Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Primavera estate autunno inverno" (Salani) di Nicola Magrin, autore delle copertine dei romanzi di Paolo Cognetti e delle ripubblicazioni di Primo Levi e Tiziano Terzani. Leggere e guardare questo libro illustrato vuol dire entrare in un mondo di atmosfere rarefatte e nello stesso tempo intense. Significa entrare in un mondo in cui le parole giocano con le immagini. Gli acquerelli di Nicola Magrin dialogano con gli haiku scelti e tradotti da Irene Iarocci. Gli haiku sono piccoli componimenti poetici di tre versi della tradizione giapponese, versi dai toni semplici che fanno spesso riferimento alla natura. Il legame fra parole, acquerelli e natura era stato già al centro di un altro libro di Nicola Magrin "Altri voli con le nuvole".

Mine Is The Golden Tongue: The Hebrew Sonnets Of Immanuel Of Rome (Centro Primo Levi, 2023) contains the first known sonnets written in Hebrew. Their author is Immanuel of Rome, an intensely studied yet little-known 14th-century poet, who adapted the quantitative meter of Arabic and Hebrew poetry from al-Andalous to the syllabic meter of romance poetry. These poems are part of Immanuel's most studied book, Maḥbarot, a collection of poetic tales conceived between satire and allegory, which combine the Arabic maqama with the stilnovistic poetic form immortalized by Dante. Widely published during its author's lifetime and in the following centuries, the Maḥbarot as a whole has never been translated into any language. Immanuel lived in the Papal city during a period of great turmoil between the communal experience and the Papal exile to Avignon. He moved with ease in the Roman Jewish and non-Jewish worlds that were actively involved in translation.
