Are you ready to take stock of your health and feel terrific? Whether you're coming off a lazy holiday, or you just haven't been feeling like yourself and want to reclaim your mojo, this episode is for you. Naturopathic doctor Lisa Brent is in the house, and we're talking about how right now is the perfect time for a wellness check. An expert in helping women navigate their menopausal years, Lisa understands that your body is changing during midlife, and what worked before in terms of nutrition, exercise and sleep may no longer be working for you—especially if you're in the throes of hormonal upheaval. She also gets that you may be concerned about new physical issues that have cropped up. During our conversation, Lisa offers great tips on how to optimize your wellbeing during this life stage. She tells you what diagnostics to consider, what lifestyle tweaks to make, what supplements are worth your time, and how you can address those nagging health concerns without worrying yourself sick. If you want to feel better, have more energy and get your groove back this season, you're gonna love Lisa's words of advice and encouragement. Among the topics Lisa and I address: How any lasting health and fitness change starts with one important mental shift The different types of lab work you should consider getting, how to interpret the results, and how to stay calm in the face of unexpected or confusing health news When to consider genetic testing as a powerful preventative tool, and when to pass on it Ways you can set yourself up for healthy aging—as well as slowing and/or preventing chronic disease How hormone therapy can tackle many symptoms of menopause—and possibly serve as disease prevention, even for women experiencing a “silent” menopause (with no tangible symptoms) How to decide if hormone therapy is right for you, whether or not there are side effects, and if it's ever too late to start on HT Lifestyle tweaks to help you feel great: nutrition shifts to help with hormones and weight gain, the best types of exercise to stay fit and curb muscle loss, and advice for getting better sleep (and who doesn't need more of that during midlife?) Plus, Lisa tells you why she believes an integrated and individualized approach to medicine is vital, gives tips on how to navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system, and reveals the one way you should never consume sugar! Fashion is an emotion-driven pleasure that you should be able to enjoy at any age. It can be easier said than done, though, with culture trying to dictate what you should (and should not) be wearing, and your body changing in a way that can make shopping a tad more challenging. According to my guest on this episode, stylist and pro-age influencer Rasmit (Roz) Kaur, a woman is never too old to cultivate and flaunt her own style. Roz, who is the epitome of ageless style and class, says you reserve the right to express yourself through your wardrobe at absolutely any age—and have a great time in the process. During our fun conversation, Roz and I swap shopping strategies that will inspire you to make the most of your wardrobe, chat about fashion staples every woman should have in her closet for easy dressing, and share priceless tips and tricks to help you feel like a million bucks at any age. Whether you're a true fashionista or you just want to kick your fashion game up a notch, this episode is for you. Among the topics Roz and I address: Whether or not there should be any fashion “rules” for women over a certain age Why dressing well requires more than just selecting the “right” clothes How to break out of a fashion rut and have fun shopping again Stylish and classic essentials you should consider having in your closet Roz's philosophy on fast fashion, the pre-owned clothing movement, and the prevalence of casual dressing How influencers have changed the fashion game by representing unique voices (including women over 40!) How fashion has evolved through the decades and the way we consume it has drastically changed Why it's so hard to figure out what jeans are in style these days! Plus, Roz describes her “perfect outfit” for several different occasions—from date night to brunch with the girls—and tells us why she disagrees with Coco Chanel's famous fashion advice. Have you been dreaming of traveling the world or, at the very least, finally embarking on that once-in-a-lifetime vacation? It's no wonder many midlifers have travel on the brain, with empty nests and more freedom on the horizon, or just plain old wanderlust kicking in. So, whatever kind of travel you're yearning for, this episode is for you. We're dishing out travel tips, we're chatting about dream destinations and, most important, we're talking about how you can start checking those items off your travel bucket list sooner than you think. Have you ever been in a dark place? That's not too unusual, especially in midlife. But I'll bet your first instinct is to try to snap out of it, as quickly as possible, so you can be there for the people in your life. Or present a rosy picture to the world. Well, on this episode I'm gonna make a case for allowing yourself to feel crappy, at least once in a while. I'm gonna tell you why you're not alone in feeling crappy. And then, yes, I'm going to share some of my best tips for getting through those tough times. The first step is giving yourself permission to experience the pain and heartache. After that, there's so much you can do to feel better—and be on your way to living the midlife you deserve. "The best way out is always through." —Robert Frost Among the topics I address: Why burying negative feelings may only make you feel worse How to listen to your body to figure out what you truly need Proven ways to generate more self-compassion and joy during difficult periods Tips for getting yourself out of a funk, bit by bit Midlife can be fantastic, but it can also be hard. It can be two things at once. If you're going through a rough patch right now, you're not alone. But if you're ready to work through it and come out stronger on the other side, this episode is for you. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
If you've got a kid over 18—whether they're heading to college, living on their own, or still under your roof—your relationship with them is evolving. Some of the changes might be great, and some might be confusing or difficult to navigate. It can be hard knowing your child doesn't need you as much as they once did, or perhaps needs you too much. Among the topics Cynthia and I discuss: The most common ways the parent/child relationship changes as your child gains independence Issues and conflicts that can crop up after your child leaves home—and how to handle them Why you might want to negotiate how often to talk or text with your child who's left home—and what to do if they need more space than you do How to shift your parenting style as your child gets older, both to manage your own expectations and to connect with your kid How to strike that delicate balance between guiding your child and allowing them to take ownership of their lives The new and surprising ways your kid may need you as they venture into adulthood The questions to ask your child before they leave for college or embark on the next stage of their life How to support child who is having trouble launching Why and how to establish new rituals with your young-adult child Plus, we reveal the one question you should ask yourself before offering your child financial support, and Cynthia helps you reframe this parenting phase as a time of renewed freedom, personal fulfillment, and a beautiful new relationship with your child. Drinking is a huge part of our culture and so engrained in the way we socialize, entertain and relax. So much so that it's hard to imagine a couple glasses of wine or a cocktail doing us any real harm. The fact is, a lot of midlifers—especially women around menopause—begin experiencing an intolerance to alcohol or no longer liking the way it makes them feel. And just when we thought some types of alcohol offer health benefits, some of that research is now being called into question. On this episode, functional nutritionist Teri Patterson, a sobriety and mindful drinking coach, helps you sort through the confusion. She debunks some of the most common myths associated with drinking, and explains how alcohol affects your body and health—so you can make more informed choices about your drinking habits. In this thought-provoking discussion, Teri and I chat about: The reasons she "broke up" with alcohol a few years ago, and why she's on a mission to help people understand the impacts of alcohol consumption The multitude of ways our culture encourages social drinking When and why women's uptake of alcohol consumption started to increase How alcohol affects you biologically and the risks associated with its consumption Why even light drinking may be associated with certain health risks How alcohol particularly affects women in midlife—especially those navigating menopause and other hormonal changes—and why you may be experiencing more side effects these days after having only one or two drinks What an "alcohol break" looks like and how it can be beneficial for anyone, even a light drinker How to determine whether or not alcohol is serving you, and what to do if you decide to cut back or stop altogether How to know if you have a problem with alcohol, or if someone close to you does Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.

If you're in perimenopause or menopause, you probably have questions. But sometimes the answers are hard to come by. Truth is, few OB/GYNs receive significant training around menopause. There are so many symptoms that can be difficult to untangle. What do house repairs, the Barbie movie, an ancient Japanese philosophy, and your beautiful aging body have to do with one another? More than you know. On this solo episode of the More Beautiful Podcast, Maryann talks about how important and life-changing it is to let go of the quest for perfection. She discusses an ideology called wabi-sabi that is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. The word “wabi” means simplicity, humility and living in tune with nature. The word “sabi” refers to what happens with the passage of time; it's about accepting the the transience of beauty and embracing the authenticity of age. Practicing wabi-sabi is learning to accept the natural cycle of growth and decay, life and death. It's finding harmony and serenity in the uncomplicated and organic. It's finding perfection in what is imperfect. And, yes, it's about accepting that things change and evolve and even grow old—and finding beauty and joy in that. So come on this short 11-minute journey with More Beautiful and learn to find peace in the impermanence, wisdom in the wrinkles and cracks, and joy in this mess that is midlife. Is there a prediabetes epidemic among midlife women? In this episode, we tackle an issue that concerns many of us. It feels like more and more women who are journeying through menopause are being told they're in the prediabetes range for insulin resistance—even those who have worked hard to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle habits. Currently, more than a third of Americans have prediabetes, which is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Most of the people who have it don't know it. And for many women, especially those with a family history, prediabetes seems to crop up suddenly in midlife when hormonal changes peak. On the show today, I interview Dr. Parveen Verma, an endocrinologist and diabetes specialist, about this rising health issue. We talk about what prediabetes is, what it does to your body, and how to find out if you have it. We also discuss how insulin resistance can be prevented, reversed, or stopped from progressing into type 2 diabetes. And we chat about Ozempic and similar diabetes drugs that are being prescribed for both on- and off-label purposes. Among the questions I ask Dr. Verma: What exactly is insulin resistence and what causes it? What risks does it present to us? Why are more midlife women being diagnosed with prediabetes—even otherwise healthy and active women? How much does genetics factor into insulin resistance? Can prediabetes be prevented? If you already have it, how can you reverse it or stop it from evolving into type 2 diabetes? What's the relationship between our changing hormones during perimenopause and menopause and insulin resistance? What does weight redistribution (which is common during and after menopause) have to do with insulin resistance? What's the link between diabetes and Alzheimer's and other medical conditions? What lifestyle tweaks can help you manage your blood sugar? What should you be eating and how should you be exercising? How do sleep and stress come into play? How does cortisol aggravate insulin resistance? How do Ozempic and similar drugs help to regulate blood sugar? What are the risk factors of taking these drugs, and are they safe to use off label for weight loss? What tests should you ask your doctor for, to determine your level of insulin resistance?* Don't miss this important discussion about your health. Wendy Valentine says her mess is her message. Six years ago, at age 45, she had a midlife meltdown. She was in debt, unemployeed, going through a divorce, grieving the death of her brother, suffering from anxiety and chronic illness, and emotionally paralyzed. Today, Wendy is financially and emotionally liberated. She's enjoying her life traveling across the country in an RV, living part-time on the Portuguese island of Madeira, and spreading the message that you can survive the midlife madness and come out the other side better than ever. On today's epsisode, Wendy and I talk about the techniques she employed to dig herself out of her depression, turn her financial situation around, and create the kind of life she was craving for herself. We also discuss: How Wendy overcame loneliness and learned to fall back in love with herself How she let go of most of her material possessions, moving from a 5,000-square-foot house into a 150-square-foot RV Why learning how to play again is crucial to aging well Why your life's purpose may not be what you think it is the difference between happiness and fulfillment—and why you should be seeking one more than the other How you know when something isn't right for you—and let it go (*my personal favorite) Why Wendy leaves her finished journals in airports for strangers to pick up! Wendy's message: I did it, so you can too. You can savor life instead of sleepwalking through it. You can become your own best friend and enjoy every drop of this beautiful life. This inspiring conversation is one you don't want to miss! Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.

When applied strategically, makeup is one of the best midlife pick-me-ups. It can brighten your complexion and your mood. It can lift your spirits as well as your facial features. A few well-placed beauty products can be as transformative as more invasive cosmetic procedures. And if you're a creative gal, makeup is yet another form of artistic self-expression. On this episode, I'm delighted to be chatting with the talented Christina Choi, an internationally known makeup artist and the founder of Christina Choi cosmetics. Her work and her inclusive beauty line focus on making women of all ages, skin tones and skin types feel beautiful and ready to conquer the world. Among the topics Christina and I talk about: How to avoid getting stuck in a beauty rut with outdated products and/or techniques The number one mistake women over 40 make when applying makeup The beauty product Christina says is essential to create the perfect canvas for cosmetics Whether or not you should rethink your favorite lip color as you age How to get that subtle J.Lo glow without looking greasy or sparkly How to give yourself an instant eye lift with makeup: which brow products create a youthful look, how to do your eyeliner properly, what to watch out for with under-eye concealer, and how to achieve luscious lashes The difference between bronzer, blush and contour cream, and which one to use when How to avoid makeup settling into fine lines and wrinkles, and whether or not "setting" your makeup is necessary Why Christina has been doing "face yoga" and how it's keeping her skin youthful and vibrant The best lighting for applying makeup, and Christina's method for testing products in the cosmetics store The one item Christina says all mature women need in their makeup bag—and why it makes a big difference Also, Christina addresses the various makeup products you might consider to elevate your look. She offers three no-nonsense beauty steps (requiring only three products) that are quick and easy, but will make you feel terrific. And she tells you why you're never too old to experiment with makeup and cultivate your unique beauty style. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
Midlife, menopause and music. Is this the new trifecta for women over 40? Lovely people, you are in for a treat, because this is a special two-for-one episode just for you. Here I was, thinking this was going to be a solo show filled with my musings about the loss of our common culture. And then guess what? A lovely woman named Monique Cupid, who just so happens to be doing work in the midlife space, won More Beautiful's "Name that '80s Song" contest and a walk-on interview on the podcast. Monique is founder of The Midlife Glow Chaser and co-founder of Life in the Pause, a movement and festival aimed at women who are embracing their second act. So you can imagine how much Monique and I had to chat about. We started off talking about her exemplary song-recognition skills, reminiscing about those always-in-our-hearts '80s tunes that marked our youth, and exchanging notes about the music we're digging right now. Then, we touched on a bit of neurological research that's always intrigued me: how the songs we listened to during adolescence will always elicit within us a strong emotional response, for better or worse. After confirming that music will always play an important part in our lives, we segued into the topic of midlife, the work Monique is doing to help women see the wonderful side of aging, and why she actually feels giddy thinking about the menopause transition. Before my banter with the lovely Monique, I do a little solo ruminating about a related topic. Lately I've been waxing nostalgic about how our generation was probably the very last to experience a monoculture—a shared pop culture that unites our generation. This common culture is what enables most Gen Xers, for example, to sing along together to the biggest hits of the '80s, or recite lines from our generation's most memorable films. This is something subsequent generations will know less and less about. In this AirPods Age, we are having fewer communal cultural experiences. How we consume music and films and television and books has changed drastically. These days, we're all plugged into our individual realities and curating our own media experiences. We're listening to our own playlists, and selecting our own television shows and news and articles and films and books from a much larger pool of content than ever before. What does this mean for subsequent generations? What does this mean for humankind? Is there any glimmer of hope as the monoculture becomes a thing of the past? Will we ever again have superstars and blockbusters and bestsellers as our generation knew them? What will bond us together if we no longer have these shared experiences? And is there a positive side to all this? Another bonus: At the start of this episode you can take a little pop-culture quiz that you'll probably only pass if you're a person "of a certain age." Visit me on Instagram @morebeautifulproject and let me know how you scored! Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
You were born an uninhibited, confident creature filled with self-love and curiosity. Then, through the years, you slowly evolved into the person you needed to become—in order to fit in, meet other people's expectations of you, and perhaps achieve society's definition of success. My guest on this episode—Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bermudez, an Emmy-winning journalist turned digital lifestyle host and social media influencer—says midlife is an opportunity to get back in touch with that badass, authentic version of yourself you may have left behind. Lizzie opens up about everything going down during this life stage, from aging and menopause, to empty nest and other life transitions. And she wants you to know you're not alone, change can be hard but transformative, and the best is still yet to come. During our lively conversation, Lizzie and I chat about: The perfectionist attitudes our generation grew up with, and why we need to free ourselves from them How she's learned to "just be herself again" in midlife—and why you should too The conflicting feelings that emerged after her daughter went off to college Whether she misses chasing the news, and what she's doing these days to get that rush (cliff jumping and wakesurfing, anyone?) How it felt to age in public as a television journalist (hint: she won't watch The Morning Show) Whether or not representation of women in the media is becoming less ageist The female competitiveness she witnessed in her field and how she's finding a more generous camaraderie among midlife women Why she used to hide her age, but now finds it liberating to reveal how old she is Where she stands on the cosmetic surgery spectrum Why she's been so candid in talking about the hysterectomy that sent her into early menopause The lessons she's learned over the years about friendship, and the relationships that matter most to her now What she does in the car every day to recharge her batteries Plus: Lizzie talks about the family crises and loss that sent her spiraling as she entered her 50s. She explains why she feels "a beauty and urgency" to live life to the fullest. She opens up about the impact she still wants to make on the world. And she tells you what you need to know about diving into your second act with courage and conviction. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
If you're the parent or caregiver of a teenager, this episode is for you. It can be challenging to navigate the ups and downs of the adolescent years—whether your child is merely exhibiting age-appropriate but frustrating behaviors (door slamming and eye rolling, anyone?) or facing more complex challenges. In this compassionate conversation with family therapist Dr. Kelly Moore, you'll gain strategies and techniques to help improve communication and boost connection with your teen. You'll also learn how to handle conflict more effectively, and nurture yourself through this rollercoaster ride. Among the questions Dr. Moore addresses: How much freedom should you give your child? What kind of behavior is developmentally appropriate? How do you talk to a kid who doesn't want to talk to you? How do you support a teen who's going through a difficult time? When should you worry about your child's mental health? And how can you manage your own emotions in order to be there for your child? In this jam-packed episode, Dr. Moore and I also discuss: The crucial information that a lot of well-meaning parenting advice leaves out How teen behaviors don't always correlate to what they're experiencing on the inside The biggest mistake parents make when communicating with their child How to dance the fine line between offering support and setting boundaries—and why teens crave both Why strengthening your self-awareness makes you more attune to your child's needs How your kid's brain development affects their behavior and emotional responses The best way to respond to the silent treatment (warning: it's not easy for you, but your kid will love it) The one thing you should always do when you're disciplining your child Why it's necessary to mourn the loss of that "little kid" your child once was Why you should approach parenting from your deepest values instead of your biggest fears When to worry about your child's mental health, red-flag behaviors to look out for, and our culture's biggest misconception about kids and depression Why apologizing to your kid is so important, and how to do it the right way When to text your child vs. talk face to face How you can stay close to your child even after they've flown from the nest Plus, Dr. Moore opens up about how a breast cancer diagnosis changed her relationship with her kids. And she offers practical, brilliant tips for diffusing conflict with your teen in the heat of the moment. Parents, this is one episode you don't want to miss! A champion of women over 40, she wants to help you release your inner critic, embrace your changing body, and ride all those midlife transitions with courage and conviction. But Honor is no Pollyanna. She's as genuine as they come, and her platform, Honestly With Honor, takes a candid look at all the foibles and conflicted feelings that accompany this messy life stage. As a single mom, she knows what it's like to experience heartbreak and self-doubt. As a Brit living in the South of France, she understands the complexity of seeking romance when it's not a requirement for happiness and fulfillment. Plus, Honor shares a few social media strategies and offers her top three tips for living your best midlife! Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
If you're someone who has no intention of settling down anytime soon, or if you're itching to try on some new hats, you're going to find this conversation with actor Diane Britt-Smith so inspiring. She's also inspiring people with her encouraging, age-positive social media that offers an important message: It's never too late to explore your talents, try something new, or launch an entirely new career for yourself. Even though she's navigating a notoriously ageist industry, Diane is a firm believer that "we should enjoy watching ourselves age"—as naturally and with as much joy as possible. Midlife can be a messy time marked by a lot of change. But my guest on this episode of the More Beautiful Podcast is on a mission to shine a light on the numerous advantages—rather than disadvantages—you have once you reach this pivotal life stage. According to Holly Boxenhorn, a psychotherapist and empowerment coach, midlife presents the perfect opportunity to leverage all your wisdom, experience and personal strengths and make the second half of your life even deeper and richer than the first. Holly says the key to tapping into your "midlife advantage" is to become aware of the seven personal energetic states that can seriously impact your life. She helps you understand how to raise your own energy level in order to improve everything from your job to your relationship, as well as move further along on your self-growth journey. Holly also runs through her list of six health and lifestyle influences that can profoundly affect your energy and your response to life's challenges. Holly and I also discuss: Why the life roadmap we were given when we were kids ends at midlife—and how that can be a good thing The ways you may be "bullshiting yourself" and how to stop Why you should address your midlife baggage before embarking on major life change How to take a more balanced approach to health and wellness in your 40s, 50s and beyond The difference between catabolic and anabolic energy, and how to stay in the "good" one What her six lifestyle influencers are and how they can affect how you show up in the world How to raise your personal energy, and which of the seven energy levels marks the sweet spot How to strengthen your interpersonal relationships (and the three types of friend every midlife woman needs) Why it's OK to talk to yourself (the best of us do it) and to acknowledge the "suck" of midlife Why women can sometimes go overboard on feeling and expressing "gratitude" How your mindset affects your views on ageism; how you approach aging is a choice and an opportunity Why it's OK to not have it all figured out by midlife Why aging powerfully is contagious Plus, Holly gives you tips on how you can kick your energy level up a notch—right now, wherever you are! We've all been around long enough to know that life can throw us curveballs. Having an estate plan—which typically includes a will, healthcare directive, financial power of attorney, and often a revocable trust—can ensure that your family is protected if something happens to you. If you've been putting off creating an estate plan, or you're not sure whether your family needs one, you'll love this conversation with estate and wealth planning attorney Jennifer Belmont Jennings. Jennifer fills you in on everything you need to know, including: What a trust is, why you probably need one, and why it's a bad idea to procrastinate The various players you need to choose for your trust, and what to look for in each of these individuals How to decide on a trustee, as well as guardians for your children—and how to avoid conflicts among them The advanced medical directives and other paperwork that should be included in your estate plan How to set up special provisions for dependents with special needs What corporate trust companies are and when you should consider using one Additional trust provisions that can help to protect your family How often you need to update your trust, and what happens when you move Plus—because Jen is not only smart but funny—we talk about celebrity estate fiascos and what we can learn from them, and what Taylor Swift recently got wrong when writing song lyrics about her will! Be sure to tune in to this important conversation. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com. Please note that this content is for educational purposes only and is not legal advice.
Oh, to be seen. The mention of an old children's television show prompted More Beautiful Podcast Host Maryann LoRusso to reflect on this age-old, universal desire. And all the conversations she's had on this show that touched on that desire—or, dare we say, need. And the feeling that many people have as they arrive at midlife that society no longer sees them as much as before—that they're becoming invisible even. In this solo episode, Maryann argues that from the time we're born until we die, we want to be seen and recognized for who we truly are. That not feeling “seen” is the root of so much conflict and despair, and contributes to the fear of aging that runs rampant in our culture. And that we all desire to be seen on a deeper level by the people closest to us, even as we scramble to hide parts of ourselves to avoid rejection. She takes a look (pun intended) at how we can put ourselves in a better position to be more clearly seen and understood by those around us, see others with the same compassion and curiosity, and continue being visible and relevant at every age of our beautiful lives. Who's ready for a makeover? No, not the kind we used to see on TV where a woman is transformed on the outside only. My guest today, Heidi Fossali, is an author and "reboot coach" who still believes in the power of makeovers—and guides her clients through new hair, makeup and wardrobe choices. But Heidi says any good makeover must start from the inside, especially during midlife. In this episode, we talk about the internal factors that may be holding you back from feeling your best, offering tips on how you can boost your confidence and create a fabulous, sexy life for yourself. Then, we turn our attention to how you can pamper yourself on the outside, so that your exterior matches your powerful new interior. Heidi and I also discuss: How she overcame her own fear of change after her divorce and why it took 10 years for her to "speak her story" How to know if you're ready for change and, if you are, how to best forge a path forward The way to recognize and embrace the gifts you have to offer the world—and start sharing them Why your midlife is so different from your mother's and grandmother's How curiosity can help you stay young at heart and connect with "the girl you left behind." The reason midlife friendships are so important, and how to cultivate a community you love Why it's OK to want to feel good on the outside too (and it's never to late to get in great physical shape) Heidi also offers her top three strategies that can trigger the change you want in your life now. If you're stuck and no longer want to settle for a life that feels "less than," this episode's for you. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
You know that meditation is great for your mind, body and soul—but fitting it into your life can be easier said than done. If you find it hard to sit for 30 minutes with your legs crossed, trying to suppress your thoughts, you're not alone. For me it's nearly impossible. But my guest on this episode—award-winning author, broadcaster, speaker and meditation expert Lori Saitz—says it's OK. There is more than one way to meditate, and you can find a method that works for you. No matter how much stress you're dealing with or what the universe throws in your path, Lori says, a regular practice can change your life in so many positive ways. In this episode Lori and I talk about: How meditation helps to rewire your brain and positively impact your life in both immediate and long-term ways, such as reducing stress, boosting creativity, improving your relationships, and even helping you sleep better Why almost everyone's midlife experience has an undercurrent of “suck” and why that needs to be acknowledged before you can get to a better place How women were conditioned to bury our feelings and rationalize away our dissatisfaction (“I should be happy because I have X, Y or Z”), and how meditation can help if you're losing your zest for life or feel that something is just off How you know when your soul is calling for growth—and find the courage to respond to that call Steps you can take to discover your personal meditation “style” and make it work with your lifestyle How to use meditation on the spot in stressful moments, to calm yourself where you're at When it might be a good idea to consider a midlife sabbatical Lori also explains why she thinks big transitions in midlife should not be dubbed a crisis, but rather a re-evaluation or reawakening. And she talks about the hardest thing she's ever done—leaving her 22-year marriage, which she describes as “fine”—and why she had to do it. This episode will change your mind forever about meditation! Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
What do you do when your dreams are derailed by tragedy? As much as we like to talk about the beauty of getting older, there's no denying that this life stage sometimes comes with loss. There are all kinds of losses, and unfortunately, this week's guest, Cristina M. Ramirez—an entrepreneur, educator and author of Empowered By Discomfort—experienced one of the most tragic kinds. She recently became a widow in midlife when her husband of 19 years died of cancer. Cristina was left to mother their two boys on her own, traversing what she now refers to as "the worst year of her life." But, after coming out of that dark period, she decided to write about it, with the goal of helping others who might be going through similar experiences. In this empowering conversation, Cristina and I talk about: How she and her husband shared their last moments together How grief literally changes your brain, how everyone's looks different, and how she processed her own How "her life didn't compute anymore" after her husband's death, and how she found courage to build a new one for herself and her family Why her children were her saving grace after the tragedy, and how she parented them when all she wanted to do was "crawl under the covers" Why asking for help was so important as she began traversing the world as a newly widowed mom What motivated her to open up about her experience, and how she hopes sharing will help others Why it's important to lean into the discomfort when life gets hard—and how doing so can lead to self-growth The way she's chosen to honor her husband's memory and the life they built together, and why dating is not—and may never be—in the cards How her loss forever changed her life outlook and career trajectory Why she believes the best is still yet to come—and why you should too If you've ever experienced profound loss and are open to exploring what lies on the other side of tragedy, please have a listen. Do you sometimes feel like you bought a ticket to the midlife shitshow? If so, trust me, you're not alone. This time of life comes with its fair share of challenges. In my first solo episode of the More Beautiful Podcast, I'm reflecting on why so many of us are feeling out of sorts right now. I'm also drawing on my first 60 podcast interviews to offer you some real strategies you can use to spin that midlife mess into some midlife magic. In this episode I talk about: The reason I've been sharing my midlife stories and why you should too—even if, like me, you consider yourself a private person Why we need to forget everything we thought we knew, or were told, about where we'd be by this stage of life How our generation's midlife differs so much from that of our mothers' What we need to acknowledge, surrender, accept and handle before we can create the life we truly desire Strategies to create the right environment and surround yourself with the right people in order to thrive in midlife and beyond Ways to get your health and energy back on track and to feel physically, mentally and spiritually better—or, as some women would say, "more like yourself" If you're sometimes (or always) feeling lost, confused, stuck, annoyed, overwhelmed, anxious...or if you've been experiencing a vague sense of dread, please listen to this episode. Other women are feeling the same way. And like them, you reserve the right to feel like the best possible version of yourself. Now and always. You deserve to overcome the messiness so the magic of midlife can emerge! Are you thinking about becoming an entrepreneur or veering off on a new career path? Starting a venture in midlife can seem daunting, but business coach/consultant Allison Berardi says this is the perfect time to pivot. As you approach the second half of life, your inner voice grows stronger. It may demand change or a sharper alignment with your values, skills and desires, encouraging you to finally pursue your dreams. Allison says there's always a way to "build a bridge from where you are now to where you want to go," and it often begins with overcoming self-sabotaging beliefs and other obstacles that can derail success. Besides offering some practical tips on how to get started, Allison tells you: How to clarify your mission and goals Why your unique gifts and talents are more transferrable than you might think How you can overcome the fear of irrelevance in midlife, especially with the world changing so fast Resistance: Why you'll always feel it to some degree—even when you're on the right track—and the best way to overcome it How to rise above the self-doubt, get the courage to start something new, and stay committed How to leverage your midlife network for guidance and encouragement Why you may not be dreaming big enough Tips for building a vibrant brand in today's cluttered market Why it's important to both ask for help and celebrate your successes You'll be planning that launch party before you know it! Does Alzheimer's or another form of dementia run in your family? Are you afraid that you're losing your memory or that you someday will? Are you trying to support someone you love who is grappling with dementia? If any of these scenarios applies to you, you'll find this episode both enlightening and comforting. My guest, Emerson Lee, is a memory-loss doula who specializes in preparing people for the possibility of getting dementia. Emerson employs tools and strategies to help people feel less panicked and overwhelmed, and more hopeful that they can go on to live a happy and fulfilling life—with or without dementia. In this episode we discuss how people can channel their anxiety about memory loss into something more positive, such as tapping into music and other creative outlets. We examine why our culture makes it harder for patients to admit they're having memory problems and how anosognosia—the inability to recognize one's own dementia—can come into play. If you're a family member, you'll appreciate Emerson's tips for cultivating an empowering atmosphere for your loved one, developing a side-by-side (as opposed to a confrontational) communication approach, navigating the complex elder-care system, and nurturing yourself as a caregiver. I'm so excited to share with you this important conversation, which I hope will quell some of the anxiety and misconceptions you may have about living with or caring for someone with dementia. If you're like many midlife women, you may be finding that what you did in your 20s and 30s to stay fit and healthy is no longer working. Your hormones are probably going wonky, and your tried-and-true workouts and meal plans are no match for the changes your body is experiencing. You may feel frustrated, confused and/or helpless. On this episode I chat with Kim Barnes Jefferson, a lifestyle coach who specializes in helping women over 40 get their groove back. Kim says that by age 45, the average woman has been on 60 diets—count 'em, 60! And it can feel like an uphill battle to lose or maintain her weight, build muscle mass and get a good night's sleep—especially through the turmoil of perimenopause and menopause. Among the takeaways you'll get from tell-it-like-it-is Kim: How to stay centered in the midst of all this midlife uncertainty—both physical and emotional; how to embrace your changing body and find new health-and-fitness strategies that keep you happy, energized and sane; and how to nix the perfectionism that many women of our generation grew up with, while staying consistent with your health and fitness goals. Kim and I also get into the nitty gritty of diet and exercise strategies—what to eat, how to work out, and how to nurture yourself, in order to meet your body where it is now and feel your best. And Kim answers many of your burning questions, such as: Exactly how much protein do you really need? How much strength training is enough and how do you go about starting with weights? How do you avoid depriving yourself for the sake of fitting into that favorite pair of jeans? Should you weigh yourself on a regular basis (and the answer is more complicated than you think)? And why is cultivating self-love an essential component of any new lifestyle plan? We also discuss the fad diets and medications of our mother's and grandmother's generation (remember those ubiquitous diet pills?), and Kim offers her take on Ozempic and other trendy drugs currently being used for weight loss. Finally, Kim tells us why it takes courage, not just discipline, to shake up your health-and-fitness routine and see results. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
Instead of thinking about midlife as a time to scale back, play it safe or pack it in, what if we instead embraced it as an ideal time to try new things, take some chances, and fail repeatedly? On this episode, I chat with fellow journalist Christine Morrison, who worked in a previous life as a marketing executive for some of the top fashion brands of the '90s. Christine is a self-described "late bloomer" who got married and had kids later in life. Now, at 54, she's continuing to fearlessly try new things, such as launching a Substack and writing a book of fashion essays, and she says the uncertainty and risk-taking are keeping her young at heart and feeling more alive than ever. Since Christine and I both have journalism degrees and worked in the fashion industry back in the day—I as a reporter and editor, Christine as a marketing exec—we had a lot to chat about, including: What it was like studying journalist in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and how the industry has drastically changed The out-of-whack beauty standards and ageism our generation grew up with, and the effect it had on us The advantages of being a "late bloomer" and why it's never too late to pivot, fail or try again How social media is making space for women over 40 to be the new fashion mentor, whether we're ever "too old" to wear certain fashions, and what younger women can learn from us in terms of style Why we need to stop being so hard on ourselves—and other women How we're coping with our changing bodies and what keeps us feeling youthful You‘re going to love this chat with the fun and fabulous Christine. What would happen if your worst fears came true and you lost everything? It happened to my next guest, who in her 40s suddenly lost her job, her marriage and her money and became a mom on welfare. Now, 15 years later and about to turn 60, Lorraine C. Ladish is the author of several books, an entrepreneur and influencer who's been featured in Oprah Daily, and is married to the love of her life. She's here to tell us how it's entirely possible to turn even the worst luck around, start from scratch and find success, joy and love in midlife. Lorraine and discuss so many things including: What she learned about humanity after hitting rock bottom How she taught herself new skills, tapped into her network, channeled her Hispanic roots and the power of social media to eventually become a successful online entrepreneur and then influencer How she and her new husband supported one another through hard times, and why she eventually decided to get married again at age 50; what that "midlife marriage" looks like and why Lorraine says it probably wouldn't have worked in her 20s Her lifelong struggles with body issues and bulimia, how pregnancy and yoga helped her overcome them, and why she still has dreams about bingeing and purging How she handles the physical changes and newfound limitations that come with aging, what she wants younger women to know about staying body positive in midlife, and why she's sharing "honest" photos of herself these days on social media (with the help of her writer/photojournalist husband) How she's dealt with menopause and why she's embraced hormone replacement therapy What the death of her best friend taught her about life, love and loss What she fears about getting older, why she appreciates every age she is, and why she still wants to be surprised about what's to come Most important, Lorraine offers words of wisdom to anyone going through difficult times right now. Please tune in to this no-holds-barred conversation with one amazing lady. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
What if we've spent most of our lives doing what's expected of us, rather than listening to what our heart is telling us? What if we decided to follow our instincts and break free of the things that are no longer serving us? Is that even possible in our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond? Today's guest found out when she retired early from a coveted job as a public school librarian to become a romance novelist, podcaster and midlife community builder. Patti Denier says she's always been inclined to follow her "true north," but motherhood and responsibility made her play it safe for many years in a coveted job that many people told her she'd be crazy to quit. But she did. In her 50s. During this fun heart-to-heart, Patti and I chat about many things, including: Why she allowed herself to quit her job and what she decided to pursue instead How her writing, podcasting and the midlife community's she built changed her life Why she wanted to help rebrand aging and encourage midlifers to change their approach to their second act Why Patti thinks we need to push ourselves just a little—and give ourselves permission to change our minds and/or forge a new path How we can stop caring about what others think (finally!) and step into our power What we want younger women to know about menopause, our changing bodies, and aging How solo travel has been an important part of Patti's midlife journey How we need to embrace life's uncertainty instead of fearing it What we've each learned as we've aged, and how we handle adversity differently now What the recent loss of her father has taught Patti about how she needs to live now The meaning of life (yes, you heard that right–we may have figured it out right here on the show!) You're going to love this down-to-earth conversation with wise and wonderful Patti. Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
Why do women outlive their reproductive years? How does our menopause experience differ from that of other species and cultures? Why do many women still crave sex after their reproductive days are over? In this fascinating chat with Dr. Deena Emera, author of A Brief History of the Female Body: An Evolutionary Look at How and Why the Female Form Came to Be, we explore various mysteries of the female body through an evolutionary lens and attempt to answer some poignant questions about our biology. Deena and I discuss: Which species have the most in common with humans in terms of reproductive span and longevity, and how rare the menopause transition is across the animal kingdom The most dominant hypotheses that attempt to explain why women run out of eggs and hit menopause decades before they're expected to die—unlike chimps, which die around the time they go through menopause Whether or not women will eventually evolve to go through menopause at a later age How women in Western culture experience menopause differently than females in other parts of the world, and how lifestyle behaviors can impact symptoms and even the average age of menopause Whether or not menopause has always been a "difficult" transition and how our ancestors may have had an easier time with it Why our genomes evolve much more slowly than our culture The ways in which mothers and their offspring are in reproductive conflict throughout pregnancy and early childrearing Why many women are still interested in sex after menopause and what that says about estrogen How the lack of female representation in medical studies has impacted women's health—and whether or not that's changing How scientists may be closer to discovering how to treat osteoporosis, which is common in post-menopausal women, and why autoimmune diseases are on the rise, especially among women You're going to be fascinated by Deena's research and observations about the female body, so listen now! Entrepreneur, author and speaker Chip Conley is on a mission to rebrand midlife, encourage intergenerational collaboration, and help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond approach their second act with curiosity and optimism. Here's what he wants you to know. What would be your next move if you had already disrupted the hospitality industry not once, but twice—first as the founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre, the world's second largest boutique hotel chain, and then as the head of global hospitality and strategy at Airbnb? For Chip Conley, the decision was clear: he would now disrupt the concept of aging. And he would do it by opening the very first school dedicated to helping people navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. Chip and I touch on so many important things, including: The tragic events that prompted him to embark on a mission to reframe midlife, as well as the profound personal experience that woke him up to how he needed to approach his own second act How his time at Airbnb, where he was referred to as a “modern elder” (and he dubbed himself a “mentern”), helped him realize how crucial intergenerational mentorship is and the unique skills people in midlife and beyond possess Why Chip thinks the concept of midlife desperately needs a makeover (midlife crisis, anyone?) and should be rebranded as a time of enormous personal growth and transformation; how consciously curating your life can help you cope with messy midlife transitions The ways in which your personal operating system shifts as you get older (think: if the first half of life is about ego, the second is about soul growth), and the brain changes that give you a special kind of intelligence Why Chip believes aging is "alchemy," or the point in life when you've finally integrated all those parts of yourself so you now show up as your full self wherever you go How cancer propelled Chip into “manopause” (technically speaking, andropause), what he wants men (and the women who love them) to know about the biological changes guys over 40 experience, and how we can communicate with one another about all of it Why he started Modern Elder Academy (MEA), what he hopes students get out of the program, and why you're going to want to enroll ASAP (did I mention the first campus is located in Baja, Mexico?) I am so excited for you to listen to this enlightening conversation with Chip. Complete show notes are available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
We hear the advice so often: Get out of your head and into your body. Listen to your body. Trust your body. But what do those things actually mean, and how do you achieve them—especially if you're a woman in the throes of perimenopause or menopause? My guest on this episode of the More Beautiful Podcast is the lovely and inspiring Gabriella Espinosa, the founder of Women's Body Wisdom, an online coaching and movement platform that empowers women to own their pleasure, power and purpose in midlife. Gabriella works with clients to help them feel more at home in their skin, as well as deal with issues such as lackluster energy, anxiety and decreased libido. She also assists people in healing old emotional wounds and trauma—which often surface during midlife. Among the many valuable takeaways you'll get from my candid conversation with Gabriella: What happens to your body when progesterone and estrogen start to decline—not just the "bad" symptoms, but the powerful and positive stuff? And why are we so hesitant to discuss sexual problems with one another? Why you may be feeling a sense of disconnect from your body and/or losing trust in it, especially if you're in perimenopause and menopause and beyond. And why that lost connection shouldn't be ignored How to reignite your spark for life, rediscover what brings you joy and lights you up Tips for tuning into your body, reawakening your senses and reprioritizing pleasure Why feelings of grief commonly show up in midlife and how you can move on from mourning to embrace an even better version of yourself How to access your body's inner wisdom, realize the abundant gifts you have to offer, and change how you show up in the world Strategies to quash those limiting self-beliefs, boost your confidence and approach your body from a place of abundance vs. lacking Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.
