Show Notes  We live in a day and culture almost devoid of traditional Elders. Our society seems to contend that people get older, but they don't get wiser. And most old people seem to have little concern about this serious conundrum. Our very special guest today, modern elder Marc Cooper, is doing something about this issue. In his latest book, Older to Elder, Marc holds a conversation with his audience about both the value and the traits of a modern elder in a highly individualistic culture of self-assurance with little desire for the wisdom and experience from what has historically been known as Elders.  LINKS Please check out Marc Cooper's website HERE.

Chip Conley is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Modern Elder Academy (MEA), the world's first "midlife wisdom school" dedicated to career and life transitions. At 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality, transforming it into the second-largest boutique hotel brand in the US. In 2013, Chip joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, mentoring its founders and shaping its culture. He is also a sought-after keynote speaker and prolific author, with several influential books to his name, including Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder and his latest bestseller, Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age. In this episode… Many people approaching midlife struggle with uncertainty, questioning their purpose, relevance, and ability to adapt to change. Society often reinforces the idea that aging means decline, leaving individuals feeling stuck in careers or personal lives that no longer fulfill them. So, how can individuals in their middle years shift from feeling irrelevant to flourishing? Chip Conley, a veteran hospitality entrepreneur, author, and speaker, challenges these outdated notions by reframing midlife as a period of reinvention and renewal. Drawing from his journey — from building a boutique hotel empire to mentoring young tech leaders at Airbnb — Chip emphasizes the power of curiosity, adaptability, and lifelong learning. He shares practical strategies, including shifting from a fixed to a growth mindset, embracing intergenerational collaboration, and taking intentional sabbaticals to reset and gain clarity on life's next chapter. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Chip Conley, Founder and Executive Chairman at Modern Elder Academy, about harnessing the potential of middle life. They discuss how Chip navigated his transition from hotelier to tech mentor, the challenges of leading while learning, and the impact of longevity on career planning. He also shares the philosophy behind MEA's curriculum and the importance of a midlife sabbatical.

The "modern elder." It's a strange term. Chip Conley describes it this way: As curious as you are wise. I heard Chip at a conference in San Francisco, wrangled a meeting with him, and booked this podcast. I was moved by his content. If modern medicine has its way, we're going to live a long time and need a place to apply ourselves during and after middle-age. Chip went through this transformation and teaches his lessons at his Modern Elder Academy. He has 6000 graduates who have been through his program with the aim of finding new purpose. He has an infection optimism and makes some points that hit me right in the "Ooooofff. That's me!!" Enjoy. And let me know if you see yourself in this interview anywhere.

In today’s episode, I’ll be speaking with Chip Conley who is on a midlife mission. After disrupting the hospitality industry twice, first as the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the second-largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S., and then as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, leading a worldwide revolution in travel, Conley co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in January 2018 in Baja California, Mexico. Inspired by his experience of intergenerational mentoring as a ‘modern elder’ at Airbnb, MEA is the world's first ‘midlife wisdom school’ and has a campus opening on a 2,600-acre regenerative horse ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2024. Dedicated to reframing the concept of aging, MEA supports students to navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. A New York Times bestselling author, Conley's 7th book "Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age" is about rebranding midlife to help people understand the upside of this often-misunderstood life stage and he was asked to give a 2023 TED talk on the "midlife chrysalis." We talk about the following and so much more: ✅What inspired him to transition from the hospitality industry to the world of tech and entrepreneurship ✅ As a mentor and advisor to many entrepreneurs, what advice does he find himself giving most frequently? ✅How he sees the intersection between hospitality principles and the tech industry? ✅ In his book "Wisdom @ Work," he explores the concept of embracing age diversity in the workplace and elaborates on this ✅ What inspired him to create the Modern Elder Academy? ✅ How Modern Elder Academy redefines traditional notions of retirement and agin We’d like to thank our sponsor, OSEA, the pioneers of clean, clinically proven skincare from the sea that delivers visible results while respecting the planet. Entrepreneur, author and speaker Chip Conley is on a mission to rebrand midlife, encourage intergenerational collaboration, and help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond approach their second act with curiosity and optimism. Here's what he wants you to know. What would be your next move if you had already disrupted the hospitality industry not once, but twice—first as the founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre, the world's second largest boutique hotel chain, and then as the head of global hospitality and strategy at Airbnb? For Chip Conley, the decision was clear: he would now disrupt the concept of aging. And he would do it by opening the very first school dedicated to helping people navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. Chip and I touch on so many important things, including: The tragic events that prompted him to embark on a mission to reframe midlife, as well as the profound personal experience that woke him up to how he needed to approach his own second act How his time at Airbnb, where he was referred to as a “modern elder” (and he dubbed himself a “mentern”), helped him realize how crucial intergenerational mentorship is and the unique skills people in midlife and beyond possess Why Chip thinks the concept of midlife desperately needs a makeover (midlife crisis, anyone?) and should be rebranded as a time of enormous personal growth and transformation; how consciously curating your life can help you cope with messy midlife transitions The ways in which your personal operating system shifts as you get older (think: if the first half of life is about ego, the second is about soul growth), and the brain changes that give you a special kind of intelligence Why Chip believes aging is "alchemy," or the point in life when you've finally integrated all those parts of yourself so you now show up as your full self wherever you go How cancer propelled Chip into “manopause” (technically speaking, andropause), what he wants men (and the women who love them) to know about the biological changes guys over 40 experience, and how we can communicate with one another about all of it Why he started Modern Elder Academy (MEA), what he hopes students get out of the program, and why you're going to want to enroll ASAP (did I mention the first campus is located in Baja, Mexico?) I am so excited for you to listen to this enlightening conversation with Chip. Complete show notes are available at Morebeautifulproject.com.

"Should the spices go in this cabinet or that drawer?" "Did you even notice the special jam I bought for you?" Who knew questions about spices or what's in the fridge could challenge emotional intelligence?  Emotional intelligence affects all relationships - even your relationship with food. My guest in this week's episode is no stranger to navigating emotional intelligence in all areas of her life. Aaliyah Mora-Khan specializes in helping leaders, professional athletes, artists, and everyday folks embody their emotional intelligence.  Aaliyah explains why it's important to distinguish between embodiment as a verb rather than a noun - especially with intuitive eating in midlife.  We talk about how embodied emotional intelligence relates to your relationship with food. Aaliyah shares her Kitchen Dance story about how emotional intelligence and cultural heritage show up in how you approach your kitchen. The Kitchen Dance is a beautiful example of how understanding cultural influences your affect patterns of behavior (with food and exercise). Aaliyah talks about her relationship with food as it reflects patterns of behavior that can be traced back to her grandparents fleeing India over 100 years ago due to famine. She explains how the generational food story of her family mixed with her childhood trauma creates her modern-day patterns with food.  Finally, Aaliyah reminds us that everyone has a food and body story. She offers strategies to help you create your own Kitchen Dance to support a healthy relationship with food and your body.  Aaliyah Mora-Khan is a Modern Elder. She focuses on centering leaders in their own embodied emotional intelligence and cultural heritage. Aaliyah has been facilitating deep transformational change for over a decade. Her clients range from professional athletes and artists to corporate leaders, and also everyday folks around town. Aaliyah co-creates an environment where clients can improve relationships, navigate professional challenges, and increase literacy about their own energy. In turn, these changes can help identify and dissolve generational trauma, clean up relationships with money, and integrate mindfulness into daily activities. Chip Conley joined the tiny tech start-up Airbnb nearly a decade ago after a successful career as a boutique hotel company founder and CEO. He was twice the age of the average Airbnb employee which earned him the title "Airbnb's Modern Elder" who was as curious as he was wise. Learn how to expand your wisdom, cultivate a generous culture, invest in mentorship, and thrive in relationships as a leader.Chip Conley, MBA, talks with Dave in Austin about the concept of wisdom, transcending age boundaries, and the importance of writing down life lessons. He firmly believes that curiosity is the elixir of life.He also explores the paradigm shift in company culture, where focusing on “cultural add” rather than “cultural fit” can foster innovation and diversity. Drawing on his experience that propelled Airbnb's success, Chip uncovers how Airbnb maintains its strong cultural focus through cultural values interviews and company-wide gatherings.A big part of mid-life includes navigating and understanding different generations, especially in the workplace. Chip earned the name “Modern Elder” in a surreptitious way through his work with much younger employees. Airbnb looked to Chip's sustained success in the hospitality space and asked him to help transform their start-up into the world's leading hospitality brand more than a decade ago. He came on to lead Global Hospitality and Strategy. Then 52, he was twice the age of the average Airbnb employee. This earned him the title “Airbnb's Modern Elder” who was as curious as he was wise. He's currently the company's Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. That experience influenced Chip to create the Modern Elder Academy—a new roadmap for midlife and learning opportunities—at an oceanfront campus in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This week I was excited to welcome Chip Conley to the show for a great conversation about wisdom and the transforming experience of being a “Modern Elder.” Chip is the CEO and Co-Founder of The Modern Elder Academy, the "world's first wisdom school" dedicated to reframing aging and helping people navigate the second half of adulthood with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility.  Conley founded and ran the highly successful boutique hotel chain Joie de Vivre for over 20 years before accepting, at age 52, a position as the in-house mentor to Brian Chesky, the youthful co-founder and CEO of Airbnb. At the time, Conley was twice the age of most of the employees at the rapidly-growing company. During his years working there, he discovered how sharing wisdom and swapping ideas with Chesky helped them both to thrive. He honed his own sense of purpose for his second half of life: “To build a community of inspired and empowered midlifers.” In this chat Chip and I trace his journey and discuss the power of what he calls metabolizing wisdom. We also discuss the need for finding purpose and the fact that people who feel aligned with their sense of purpose tend to live longer, and during those extra years of life they also generally are healthier, feel happier and are less lonely. This is a great conversation for people of all ages and is vital for anyone looking at the second half of adulthood and asking questions about how they can apply their unique skills and life experiences to a more enriching career path or period of mentorship. As a child of two Type-A parents, Chip Conley had his success script written for him. But deep down he knew he was destined to write his own story. Today, Chip is the bestselling author and thought leader at the intersection of psychology and business. Having founded the Joie de Vivre hotel chain, of which he was CEO for almost 24 years, he then sold the company and became an advisor to the founders of Airbnb, before founding the Modern Elder Academy, which he describes as the world's first midlife wisdom school.“I had this epiphany, which was, why do we not have midlife wisdom schools, places where people can go and reimagine and repurpose themselves in midlife, because if we're living longer, and people are often staying in the workplace longer by choice and necessity, we need places where people can do a midlife pitstop.”In this episode, Chip talks about his life trajectory and the things that make him happy, (including the things that can make all of us happy). He also discusses what it means to be a modern elder, and how having insight changes everything.“I don't call the midlife crisis a crisis anymore. I call it the midlife chrysalis. Because midlife for a butterfly is the chrysalis. And it is in that dark, gooey space, that the transformation happens between caterpillar and butterfly.”On today's podcast: How to create a sense of meaning for people Why fame is a double-edged sword Roles models in the conscious capitalism movement  Founding the MEA (Modern Elder Academy) Links:https://chipconley.com/

She shares how her passion is increasing collaboration between generations in organizations and reverse mentoring for executives within 10 years of retirement.Julie discusses the topic of ageism and the reluctance of older generations in turning over control. She suggests that senior members take on the role of the modern elder who provides experiences of crises that younger generations may have not encountered yet.Through a values assessment, different generations can find common ground on where to take the company to avoid the all-too-common reluctance of passing the torch. Julie explains that reverse mentoring provides a safe space for modern elders to learn the skills they need to remain relevant in changing times.HIGHLIGHT QUOTESJULIE: SHARING THE WISDOM OF MOMENTS OF CRISES "We have more values in common than we don't. It's really one, the time of life, and then two, the experience. So the older generation might value stability because they have been through their crises moments. They have been through and they've learned that I have $12 in my name and I can't buy toothpaste. This is probably as low as I'm going to go."JULIE: AUTHENTIC CONVERSATIONS ON VALUES BETWEEN GENERATIONS"My biggest piece of advice would be to literally sit down face to face and talk about what matters most to the person, from a business perspective, what matters most to the person leaving or passing the torch? Is it the longevity of the company? Is it leaving a legacy in a particular industry? What is it that is important for that person, and then for the younger person who's inheriting all of it, what is important for them?"Connect with Julie through the following links:LinkedIn | WebsiteIf you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review, and share with a friend who would benefit from the message. 061 Teddi Dean AKA: Teddi Bennett OG Bones Brigade Member, Modern Elder Teddi was an original Bones Brigade Team Member. I used to skate quite frequently with him in the late 70's, early 80's. He had a buttery smooth surf style, growing up surfing in Huntington Beach in the 70's. He seemingly disappeared from skateboarding in the early 80's, and I always wondered what happened with him. I re-united with Teddi in 2015 and learned of his interesting life story, and decided it was time to share it with more of the skateboard world. His website describes his life pat simply "Curiosity led Teddi Dean from life as a Southern California pro skateboarder to travel as a student of the Dharma. He is now a mindfulness and meditation teacher".  Teddi currently works down in Baja with the Modern Elder Academy.  Obviously there is a lot of stories on that path, including his days on the Bones Brigade, and his respect for Stacy Peralta. He also spent some time in the film industry, teaches and practices Yoga and Meditation, and he shares some background of the formation of the Modern Elder Academy. He also talks about getting Stacy to come and speak at the Academy as a Modern Elder, a term I love, as I yearn to be one myself as I just turned 60. I hope you enjoy learning about or catching up with Teddi, another amazing product of the pioneering days of skateboarding.

What are the keys to long-life learning? There's a difference between being a life-long learner and long-life learner. How you learn at thirty years old is different from how you learn at sixty years old. As you age, your brain changes, which then transforms how you look at certain topics, what you want to learn about, and why you want to learn about them. To go deeper into this topic, I'm thrilled to have Chip Conley as our special guest today. Chip is the founder and CEO of Modern Elder Academy, which focuses on the value of intergenerational collaboration in companies. His latest book, Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder, encourages people to rethink the value of having five generations contributing to the workspace. Long-life learning is the idea your thoughts are part of a holistic, systemic process that adapts as you age. Your focus and interests shift into seeking deeper meaning in the topics and subjects you study. Society tends to focus on how long you live.
