Chip Conley is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Modern Elder Academy (MEA), the world's first "midlife wisdom school" dedicated to career and life transitions. At 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality, transforming it into the second-largest boutique hotel brand in the US. In 2013, Chip joined Airbnb as Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, mentoring its founders and shaping its culture. He is also a sought-after keynote speaker and prolific author, with several influential books to his name, including Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder and his latest bestseller, Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age. In this episode… Many people approaching midlife struggle with uncertainty, questioning their purpose, relevance, and ability to adapt to change. Society often reinforces the idea that aging means decline, leaving individuals feeling stuck in careers or personal lives that no longer fulfill them. So, how can individuals in their middle years shift from feeling irrelevant to flourishing? Chip Conley, a veteran hospitality entrepreneur, author, and speaker, challenges these outdated notions by reframing midlife as a period of reinvention and renewal. Drawing from his journey — from building a boutique hotel empire to mentoring young tech leaders at Airbnb — Chip emphasizes the power of curiosity, adaptability, and lifelong learning. He shares practical strategies, including shifting from a fixed to a growth mindset, embracing intergenerational collaboration, and taking intentional sabbaticals to reset and gain clarity on life's next chapter. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews Chip Conley, Founder and Executive Chairman at Modern Elder Academy, about harnessing the potential of middle life. They discuss how Chip navigated his transition from hotelier to tech mentor, the challenges of leading while learning, and the impact of longevity on career planning. He also shares the philosophy behind MEA's curriculum and the importance of a midlife sabbatical.

Inspired by his experience of intergenerational mentoring as a "modern elder" at Airbnb, where his guidance was instrumental to the company's extraordinary transformation from fast-growing start-up to the world's most valuable hospitality brand, MEA is the world's first "midlife wisdom school" and has a campus opening on a 2,600-acre regenerative horse ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico in April 2024.Dedicated to reframing the concept of aging, MEA supports students to navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. Michael Krasny began this episode with author, hotelier and long-time wisdom seeker Chip Conley, who was in Baja, talking about the terrible fires in Los Angeles and what if any lessons can be learned from them. They spoke of wisdom seeking and Conley of the metaphor for our lives of a rental car as well as his ongoing struggle with cancer, which he calls his teacher. Krasny brought up wrong headed views of cancer that place too much blame on the individual self and they spoke of environmental and so-called lifestyle effects tied to it and then proceeded to discuss identity and what Conley, a gay man, has called "identity cleansing." The two also discussed Conley's history as a hotelier and his philosophy of hospitality, including how to deal with so-called "A-holes," as well as Conley's thoughts about seeking and finding joy. A good deal of this rich and highly illuminating conversation included talk of aging and shifting views of longevity, as well as ritual and the changing nature of the workplace and the role AI is likely to play in our future. The role and importance of mentorship also came up as did the significance of love. Conley spoke of his years of leadership at Airbnb, what he means by being a super host and what he calls karmic capitalism and the importance of imprint in memory.

What if midlife is not a crisis, but a chrysalis for transformation? This compelling question drives the conversation in this episode of Life in Transition with guest Chip Conley, best-selling author, hospitality entrepreneur, and founder of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA). Chip, who has navigated his own midlife challenges—including a near-death experience and redefining his identity—shares profound insights on how midlife can be a time of renewal and reinvention, rather than a period of crisis. At age 50, after building a highly successful boutique hotel company, Chip faced a turbulent period where his personal and professional life crumbled. But instead of seeing it as the end, Chip reframed his experience as a period of shedding—letting go of old identities to embrace something new. “I molted my identity, much like a snake sheds its skin,” Conley shares, describing the necessity of outgrowing old roles and labels. This process of molting allowed him to reimagine his life, eventually leading to his role as a mentor to the founders of Airbnb and later the creation of MEA.In this enlightening episode, Chip's reflections offer listeners practical wisdom on how to navigate the messy middle of midlife and emerge stronger on the other side. Whether you're going through your own transition or looking to support someone else, these insights serve as a powerful reminder that midlife can be a time of flourishing, not fading. In this episode, we'll talk about:Molting Old Identities: Chip Conley discusses the process of letting go of outdated identities and roles, and how this creates space for personal growth and reinvention in midlife.Navigating Transitions: Chip's near-death experience offered him a new perspective on life, prompting him to embrace urgency and purpose in every moment.Midlife Wisdom: Chip explains how the Modern Elder Academy helps people cultivate wisdom and reframe their relationship with aging, turning midlife from a crisis into an opportunity for transformation. The Importance of Community: Chip highlights the lack of social infrastructure for people in midlife and how having a support system is crucial for navigating life's transitions.Relationships and Growth: As we change in midlife, so do our relationships. Chip stresses the importance of empathy and recognizing how personal growth impacts others.Letting Go of Toxic Relationships: In some cases, personal growth may mean leaving behind relationships that no longer serve us, and Chip discusses how to navigate this difficult process.Living with Urgency and Purpose: Inspired by his experiences, Chip advocates for living every day as if it were your last, focusing on what truly matters.Connect with Chip:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInMentioned on the Show:Books:Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder – A book by Chip Conley where he shares his journey at Airbnb and his insights on becoming a modern elder.Learning to Love Midlife – Chip referenced his writing on midlife transitions, particularly focusing on the concept of becoming "nobody" and shedding old identities.Becoming Nobody by Ram Dass – Chip mentioned this book while discussing the shedding of identities in midlife.Modern Elder Academy (MEA):Website: MEAwisdom.com – Chip's academy focuses on helping people navigate midlife transitions and cultivate wisdom through in-person and online programs. The Anatomy of a Transition: A free resource available on the MEA website that outlines the stages of transition (Ending, Messy Middle, New Beginning).Podcasts and Fireside Chats:Chip mentioned his popular online fireside chats featuring thought leaders like Gloria Steinem and Dr. Mark Hyman, which draw hundreds of attendees for intimate discussions on various topics.Movies and Talks:Chip referenced Ellen Langer, a prominent psychologist, during his conversation about aging and mindfulness, highlighting a fireside chat he had with her.Let's connect! This week Nicola and Di chat with the wise and inspiring Chip Conley. Chip is an entrepreneur, speaker and New York Times best-selling author. Chip spent the first part of his career in the hospitality industry - he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality in 1987, which became the 2nd largest operator of boutique hotels in the US. After selling his company in 2010, Chip went on to become the global head of strategy for Airbnb, transforming it from a fast-growing start-up to the world's most valuable hospitality brand. His next step was to follow his new passion to reframe the concept of ageing, and help people navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. He founded the world's first midlife wisdom school, Modern Elder Academy (MEA). He is also a loving father to his two sons.  In this conversation, we hear how Chip had a near death experience that made him question the way he was living his life, and he decided he wanted to do something new in the second half of his life. He became dedicated to helping people navigate midlife in a new way, shift their mindset to be pro-aging and realise their best years are ahead of them.  Chip shares some great advice for what people can do to find more meaning in midlife, the importance of being willing to learn new things, be a beginner again and how to focus on having a growth mindset. We also hear about the fun things that people get up to at his MEA schools in Baja and Santa Fe - we can't wait to get there.  Chip is so inspiring and fills people with so much hope that the best is yet to come. We absolutely loved chatting with him and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.  Follow Chip on IG here Find out more about the Modern Elder Academy here Buy Chip Conley's book Learning to Love Midlife here Find out more about Chip's work here  Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Midlife Transitions: How to Lean in Rather than Resist the ‘Messy Middle' with Chip Conley

Reimagining Love

When it comes to life stages, “midlife” often gets the short end of the stick. We speak about adolescence and retirement as vistas rich with opportunity and possibility while we joke about midlife and its related crises. However, when we adopt an affectionate perspective, opportunity and joy prove to be just as possible in this “messy middle” stage. Many transitions take place over the decades following age 50. These milestones are no less impactful than those we celebrate, such as graduation and marriage, and yet most of us lack rituals to mark these evolutions and help us build communities of support in this time of great potential.Chip Conley was a disruptive force in the hospitality industry for decades. In 2018, he combined his experiences mentoring at Airbnb with his own midlife transition to launch the Modern Elder Academy (MEA). Today, the world's first “midlife wisdom school” offers luxurious, personal growth retreats in Baja California and New Mexico. Chip is also the author of seven books, including his most recent, Learning to Love Midlife. In December 2024, Dr. Alexandra will be at the Santa Fe ranch location of MEA leading a 5-day retreat for couples centered on healing the past, deepening connection, and creating a relational vision for the future. You can attend with your partner or on your own. To learn more about the retreat, Loving You Without Losing Me: A Retreat for Couples, visit the website and schedule a free consultation call with the MEA admissions team.Whether you are approaching midlife, are in the midst of it, or if midlife is in your rearview mirror, Chip's affectionate and curious approach to this often overlooked and undervalued stage will illuminate new outlooks and possibilities for how we lean into life's transitions.Relevant Links:Read Chip's latest book Learning to Love MidlifeLearn more about Chip and get his free Anatomy of a Transition resource on his websiteLearn more about Dr. Alexandra's December 2024 retreat at MEAOrder Dr. Alexandra's new book, Love Every DaySubscribe to Dr. Alexandra's NewsletterSubmit a Listener Question Join Dr. Alexandra's five-day retreat with the Modern Elder Academy — Get 10% off with code 'GF10'Try Kion Aminos risk-free for 60-days with a money-back guarantee. I'd heard about Chip long ago but only met him recently at a launch event for his book Learning to Love Midlife. It resonated since at 52 years old, I was smack in the middle of the part of life he was talking about, after adulthood but before old age. I've also been approached by universities with programs for people in their third acts.A big topic is finding and creating meaning and purpose. My life is overflowing with them since no one seems to be leading on the biggest issue or even know effective things we can do. So I was curious how sustainability fit into Chip's curriculum.Since he started a program from scratch, I was curious how it started and what drove him.
