In today's podcast episode, I explored Meditation 10 from Book 8 of Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations." This particular meditation delves into the nature of repentance, pleasure, and their relationship with virtue. Marcus asserts that repentance is a self-reproof for neglecting something useful, and what is truly good must always be useful. He concludes that sensual pleasure, therefore, is neither good nor useful. Marcus' meditation might initially seem to advocate for a life devoid of pleasure, echoing a stereotypical stoic rejection of sensual experiences. However, I aimed to provide a more nuanced interpretation. While virtue, the only good in Stoicism, is indeed always useful, it doesn't necessarily imply that anything not perpetually useful is devoid of value. Repentance, as discussed by Marcus, is about recognizing the lost opportunity for something beneficial, aligning with Stoic principles. But when he suggests that no sage would repent refusing sensual pleasure, it's vital to understand the context of utility in Stoicism. Pleasure, especially sensual pleasure, is not inherently good in the Stoic framework, but it's not always harmful either. It's classified as an ‘indifferent' – something that neither contributes to nor detracts from virtue. In real-life scenarios, the utility of pleasure can be highly context-dependent. For instance, sexual pleasure within a relationship might foster intimacy and connection, aligning with one's duties in the Circles of Concern. In this sense, pleasure can be situationally useful. I speculated that Marcus' harsh stance on pleasure might have stemmed from personal struggles or the context of his times. It's important to remember that “Meditations” was a personal journal, reflecting his thoughts and struggles, not always a prescriptive guide for all. I emphasized that attempting to completely reject pleasure is unrealistic and unnecessary. Stoicism advises moderation and mindful engagement with life's pleasures. It's about how we interact with ‘indifferents' like pleasure and how these interactions reflect our character. Engaging healthily with pleasure can indeed be a part of a virtuous life. In conclusion, while Marcus Aurelius provides a stern view on pleasure, a contemporary Stoic perspective recognizes the role of pleasure as an indifferent. It's not about banishing pleasure but about engaging with it in a way that's aligned with our character and virtues. This approach reflects a more balanced and realistic application of Stoic principles in modern life. What is receptivity? And how does it relate to our wombspace? In the world of gynecologic health, the concept of a receptive womb is all but left to the scientific research articles talking about encouraging an optimal uterine lining so potential implantation can occur. And while that is absolutely important (of course having a robust and nutrient-rich uterine lining is a sign of not just uterine health but also overall health), there is more to the story than just the physical components. In my perspective, cultivating the *energy* of receptivity is JUST as important as having the physical building blocks we need for womb health. In fact, I would go so far as to say that supporting the reproductive and generative organs in our womb with everything from visualizations and loving self-touch all the way to herbs and grief and trauma work can ALL encourage more optimal receptivity. The truth is, we are not just physical bodies. We have emotions, we have traumas, we have grief, we have patterns and we need tools and strategies to support us on multiple layers as we work to enhance our receptive energy - whether for fertility, sensuality or hormonal health overall. Which is exactly what I get into in this week's episode.Listen to learn:what receptivity is and how it relates to the wombspaceexamples of nature representing the soft and yin qualities how security, safety, trauma, grief + creativity are all connected to the wombwhy it's important to offer yourself loving attention and "no agenda" touchsimple practices and ideas for you to cultivate receptivity in your bodysome herbal allies for nourishing your receptive wombspaceResources:FREE MEDITATION: Womb connection and clearing guided visualizationEpisode 19: The importance of softening in your pelvis w Chaya Leia AronsonEpisode 28: Rhythms of your womb: Invitation to slow downEpisode 29: Fertility rituals + mystery of time w Caroline AshurstEpisode 34: What if your womb was an altar?Episode 61: Womb tending with Dr Emily WilsonEpisode 77: Myofascial release for breast/chest + pelvis w Lindsay CourcelleIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! We hear the advice so often: Get out of your head and into your body. Listen to your body. Trust your body. But what do those things actually mean, and how do you achieve them—especially if you're a woman in the throes of perimenopause or menopause? My guest on this episode of the More Beautiful Podcast is the lovely and inspiring Gabriella Espinosa, the founder of Women's Body Wisdom, an online coaching and movement platform that empowers women to own their pleasure, power and purpose in midlife. Gabriella works with clients to help them feel more at home in their skin, as well as deal with issues such as lackluster energy, anxiety and decreased libido. She also assists people in healing old emotional wounds and trauma—which often surface during midlife. Among the many valuable takeaways you'll get from my candid conversation with Gabriella: What happens to your body when progesterone and estrogen start to decline—not just the "bad" symptoms, but the powerful and positive stuff? And why are we so hesitant to discuss sexual problems with one another? Why you may be feeling a sense of disconnect from your body and/or losing trust in it, especially if you're in perimenopause and menopause and beyond. And why that lost connection shouldn't be ignored How to reignite your spark for life, rediscover what brings you joy and lights you up Tips for tuning into your body, reawakening your senses and reprioritizing pleasure Why feelings of grief commonly show up in midlife and how you can move on from mourning to embrace an even better version of yourself How to access your body's inner wisdom, realize the abundant gifts you have to offer, and change how you show up in the world Strategies to quash those limiting self-beliefs, boost your confidence and approach your body from a place of abundance vs. lacking Full show notes available at Morebeautifulproject.com.

It requires great courage to embark upon the path of self-discovery, because you will be faced with having to question things which you and perhaps everyone around you have accepted as undeniable truth. The search for true happiness brings into question something that many of us hold to be a fact – the idea that sensually pleasurable experiences are the same as happiness. This is not true. Sensual Pleasure does not equal Happiness. They are two different things. It is very refreshing to hear someone like Russell Brand (who totally gets it) speak to this point - https://youtu.be/TgVKpS3RH_I?t=45 So what is the Yoga perspective (spiritual perspective) • I am a spiritual being temporarily residing within a material body. • Fulfilling the desires of my senses and mind does not fulfill “me”. • Sensual pleasure (like sensual pain) has a beginning, and must therefore also have an end. I cannot enjoy any material experience without limit or forever. It all ends. • Sensual enjoyment (a material experience) does not “touch” me – the spiritual being. • Being spiritual by nature I need spiritual “food” or “nutrition”. When I live in harmony with my true nature, then I will experience happiness. Before giving up this present body, if one is able to tolerate the urges of the material senses and check the force of desire and anger, he is well situated and is happy in this world. Bhagavad-gītā 5.23 A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires—that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still—can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires. - Bhagavad-gītā 2.70 One whose happiness is within, who is active and rejoices within, and whose aim is inward is actually the perfect mystic. He is liberated in the Supreme, and ultimately he attains the Supreme. Bhagavad-gītā 5.24

Stress and trauma get stored in the body and can linger for years, even lifetimes. Stagnant energy can cause many, if not all, illnesses. And shut down our libido, creativity, and sensual and sexual expression. Stored energy from negative experiences, (some that we don't even remember, or perhaps have been passed down through generations), can have a huge impact on our ability to feel safe in our bodies, receive sensual pleasure and access our vitality. So what can we do? There are effective, tried and true practices that activate the body's natural ability  to heal and thrive. Practices that support us in liberating stuck energy from the past so that we can create a more empowering, pleasure filled, and vibrant future. What I've found to be true is that the simplest practices are usually the most effective. And to be effective, these practices need to be done in a spirit of reverence, love and even awe of the body. And with an almost childlike curiosity. Our bodies are so wise and know how to release, integrate and even transform and alchemize any negative experiences that block our bliss. We just need to learn how to release top down control and begin to trust this sacred vessel that carries us through life. The Taoist system has so much to offer us here.A good place to start is to connect with your feet and your kidneys. From the Taoist perspective, our feet root us to the Earth and give us access to the Earth's energy as a healing tonic. According to Taoist Reflexology, our kidneys are where we tend to store fear, scarcity, shame and guilt. I was excited to listen in to Mangala Holland's wisdom because she knows a lot about pleasure and how to support people to find more of it in their lives in a way that is not about looking sexy for other people. No surprises then, that there is some explicit language in this episode.  Mangala is a Women's Empowerment and Sexuality coach, and facilitator.  She describes herself as being on a mission to help pussy-owners become empowered through loving themselves fiercely, celebrating their sexuality, and overcoming the fear, guilt and shame that keeps them playing small. What I love is that Mangala has a beautiful no-bullshit, fluff-free, grounded, dogma-free style. In this episode we discuss:How we can be confident in our sexuality, especially when we've been brought up in a culture of shameHow to move from numbness to pleasureMangala's journey to an authentic, flowing expression of sexualityWhy ‘shoving things up there' from jade eggs to performance enhancers can create more trauma and block pleasureHow sexual trauma can be played out in ‘healing' groups, re-traumatising and shaming those who don't perform as requiredHow to check-in with yourself and thaw out the numbnessHow to check for a ‘yes' before doing anything downstairsHow sexual problems are more likely to be to do with having a too-tight pelvic floor than too looseHow to build embodied awareness in your genital area and pelvic floorThe toxic power dynamics and abuse present in some tantra organisationsThe problem with selling ‘empowerment'How to tell if a training is safeMoving away from the ‘male gaze' to feel how we are from the insideAnd what happens when you are with another body trying to find pleasureAlong with lots more hot stuff and, of course, Mangala's top tip for increasing pleasure in your life. You can find Mangala's website and online program hereTo find support if you have experienced abuse in an embodiment, tantra or yoga class or workshop have a look at the Yoni Shaki Movement or Tantra Not Trauma Facebook group. You can also look at Somatic Experiencing, TRE or search here or here for a therapist that specialises in trauma.I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topics we discuss, you can message me through Instagram or have a look at my website where you'll find a wealth of free resources. You will find the podcast on Spotify, iTunes and many more platforms soon.
