Have you been dreaming of traveling the world or, at the very least, finally embarking on that once-in-a-lifetime vacation? It's no wonder many midlifers have travel on the brain, with empty nests and more freedom on the horizon, or just plain old wanderlust kicking in. My guest on this episode decided to leave her life and her job as a consultant behind for an entire year to travel solo. Natasha Augustine says anyone can do what she's doing, with a little planning and saving, and the experience can be life changing. So, whatever kind of travel you're yearning for, this episode is for you. We're dishing out travel tips, we're chatting about dream destinations and, most important, we're talking about how you can start checking those items off your travel bucket list sooner than you think. Among the topics Natasha and I discuss: How Natasha decided to take an entire year to travel—and what she did to prep for her journey How midlife women are leading the travel movement The benefits of solo vs. group travel and how both can feed your soul How to open yourself up to new experiences by venturing off the beaten path Packing tips to make your excursions more enjoyable Hot travel spots everyone's talking about, and the trip that Natasha found the most transformative Plus, Natasha tells us why she loves getting lost looking for bathrooms during her travels, and reveals the one thing she always brings with her on the plane. Kathleen enters into a week of solo parenting, so more on that next week! This week's guest…Born in high-fashion Milan, Francesca Allen never felt like it was home. Instead, she traveled the world, finding a particular soft spot for Australia, and an even bigger one for Darwin, moving her life from the UK back to Darwin when the hot weather and laidback lifestyle came calling. The mum of two, who now has her own photography business in Darwin, discusses how postpartum depression robbed her of the early months with her first baby, and how crippling anxiety in the early days meant a trip to hospital and countless hours with the maternity mental health team and in councilling. But getting the help she needed Francesca lives her best Territory life, capturing those special moments for not just herself but other Darwin families.
This is an episode I never imagined I'd need to make; family lore was that my mum June would live to a hundred. But very sadly, after a sudden terminal cancer diagnosis in late January, my beautiful mum passed away early in February. As the biggest fan of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, I knew I couldn't restart it after my time away without mentioning my mum and how she encouraged me to travel - I definitely wouldn't be here creating this podcast without her influence throughout my life. My dear friend Di Bortoletto and I sat in her spare room last weekend to record this chat about my mum's travel experiences and about some of the special experiences we'd had together as well, and I wanted to share that with you all. At 18 years old, Raquelle Stevens came to Los Angeles on a whim. Her family was moving from Chicago, and she felt called to take the risk alongside them, understanding that what is beyond our comfort zone is often what is good for us. Raquelle's story is one of following the signs. It begins with a good side-of-the-road car cry on Highland, in which she prayed, “God, if this is where I am meant to be, I pray that I would make the best friends I've made in my entire life and that you would make it really clear. And I'm going to give it one year, or I'm moving back to Chicago.” Shortly after, those friends appeared. She had set out to do journalism, studying in Chicago and transferring to a Los Angeles college. However, Raquelle quickly realized that her life was taking a different path, in which she would do things that shed light in big ways. It was a vague destination, but a clear signal. And, fast forward to now, she has. A great example is the bestselling book Raquelle wrote with Tanya Rad: The Sunshine Mind. The Sunshine Mind was born out of the pain they witnessed people experience in the pandemic. Together, they shared their wisdom in relationships, in faith, in overcoming low self-esteem and loneliness. Their aim was to give people courage. The Sunshine Mind's underlying message is that there is more light in the world than darkness. There is more good in the world than bad. Raquelle breaks down the process of writing a book, and the vulnerability within it as she shares personal stories of hope and overcoming adversity. Vulnerability plays into all of Raquelle's work, as she shares about the process of making My Mind And Me, the Apple+ Selena Gomez documentary which Raquelle produced and starred in. In all of the ways that Raquelle grants people access into her world, there is a dash of vulnerability, because it is a one-way window into her real life and real friendships. She does this in the hopes to share the wisdom that we can change the world with how we love. Raquelle explains how love begins with patience, and she demonstrates this truth in how she moves through the world, as you will hear in this episode. I hope you enjoy our time in the tub together! This episode is brought to you by Fractal Forest. Fractal Forest is an Earth-Tek research collective restoring meaningful connection between humanity and the Earth. I wanted to share how I personally use FRACTAL FOREST products. Their shilajit drops help with my focus and energy levels. I'm someone who often wakes up with a burst of energy, which gradually wanes as the day goes on. I have noticed a change in my energy and ability to focus since I started implementing Fractal Forest Shilajit drops into my daily routine. I think what makes Fractal Forest so special is that they use only earth elements in their formulation process: this means No synthetic additives or preservatives are included and it shows - the sensation is pure, the plant is pure! Whether I'm drinking the blue lotus tea, or imbibing drops of dream state, shilajit, these herbs enhance my experience of life. There is a lot of information about trackables out there. There are all kinds of videos, blog post, and podcast about what they are, what to do with them, and etiquette for moving them. But not often do you find anything going into detail about setting missions for them. This podacst is based on Lisa Ruoff's own personal experiences, as a single solo female traveler, within her highly unconventional life. Alaska to Cuba and Back is the story and is about leaving her little, off grid cabin in Alaska to make her way onto a sailboat off the east coast of the states, to sail around Cuba with a South African captain and the girl he met at a bar the night before. She wrote a book about this. Her second book, Bite of the Travel Bug , recently released, is about backpacking and hitchhiking adventures in both Australia and Africa. For others, the travel bug is more about adventure and less about destination. No matter what form it takes, the travel bug can be a powerful force. And once you've been bitten by the travel bug, there's no turning back. The best way to satisfy the travel bug is to get out there and start exploring. There are so many amazing places to see and things to do in the world, and the only way to experience them is to hit the road. So if you're feeling the itch to travel, don't fight it. Embrace your inner wanderlust and let the adventure begin. For many people, this means taking a gap year or semester abroad to teach English or work in another country. However, the travel bug can strike at any age. There are plenty of opportunities for older adults to travel, whether it's through volunteering, working temporarily in another country, or simply taking a long vacation. Travel can be an extremely rewarding experience, providing a chance to learn about other cultures and see the world from a new perspective. So if you're feeling the itch to travel, don't let anything hold you back. There's no better time than now to start exploring. For some people, the feeling to travel is triggered by a specific event, such as hearing about a new destination or seeing an interesting place on TV. For others, the travel bug may be more general, leading them to feel restless and wanting to explore different parts of the world. Regardless of its cause, the travel bug can be a strong motivator, leading people to plan trips, save money, and even quit their jobs in order to pursue their wanderlust. While the travel bug may seem like a simple case of wanderlust, it can have a profound impact on someone's life, leading them to experience new cultures, meet new people, and see the world in a whole new light. The travel bug can help people learn a lot about different cultures and customs. It can also be a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. Traveling can be a great way to learn more about other countries and their customs. It can also be a great way to teach people about your own culture and customs. Traveling can also be a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. You can learn about their cultures and customs, and you can also teach them about your own culture and customs. Traveling can be a great way to learn about different cultures and customs, and it can also be a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. Traveling is very doable when you work abroad. The St. John's pedestrian mall is winding down for another year. Water Street will re-open to vehicle traffic on Tuesday, after the Labour Day holiday. Putting an end to the pedestrian-only area for shopping and dining for the season. But with the great weather this summer and the influx of tourists as COVID-restrictions lifted, should the city consider extending the mall later into the fall of the year? We wanted to know what downtown businesses thought of that idea. Peg Norman joined us on the line, she runs The Travel Bug on Water Street.

Diann Schindler, DiannAbroad, takes us back to her 3rd grade geography class in Hamilton, Ohio, when her first thought of travelling outside the United States burst forth, infiltrating her head and her heart. She was nine years old. But, it wasn't until decades later that she truly acted on that notion, with full conviction, and came to understand that travelling is all about the people...meeting people from all walks of life and lands. Making connections is the true essence of broadening horizons, tolerance, understanding, and love. Diann tells us about two women she met: Marketa in Prague and Milly in Fez, Morocco. They helped her understand women are women, are women, all over the world, often with the same painful experiences. BLOG: Prague, the City of 100 Bridges with a 1,100 year history. Daniella Morganelli got her start in the vacation rental business by traveling worldwide throughout her life with her mom. By visiting other areas she learned essential tools and tricks to make a memorable guest experience. Two years ago she purchased a condo in Glen, New Hampshire that she transformed into a vacation rental. She had the intention to make it an Airbnb at the start and her realtor helped her find some properties that would be ideal for vacation rentals. D5 Vacavibes is ideal for skiers, hikers, families who want to enjoy Storyland, and all who love the outdoors. The story of this condo is a warm, cozy, cabin. When first listing the property, Daniella admits that she hit the publish button prematurely. She got her first 3 bookings within 2 hours. They were working up to the last minute when her first guest came. Ended up not having the property ready which lead to a 4-star review for her first review. It took some time to bounce back from that. Anything less than 5-stars is a bad review in the eyes of Airbnb. Today, Vacavibes has super host status. Daniella had her heart set on getting the status when she first published her listing. Despite the 4-star review, she was still able to claim the Superhost status. Instagram plays a huge part in the story of this vacation rental. With other 5,000 followers, Daniella uses the platform to share her family's adventures in the White Mountains. Since starting it, she's used Instagram to host giveaways and contests which has helped her bring back reoccurring guests. Using Influencer Marketing helped Danielle get some exposure for her property and Instagram as well. Influencers on Instagram get paid to promote businesses. She paid and offered a free stay to the Influencer she worked with and in exchange, the Influencer promoted her property and gave her the rights to all of the photos. Daniella joined the White Mountain Attraction Association and her property is listed as a suggested place to stay. She uses her Instagram to encourage her followers to get out, travel, and explore new places. Whether they stay with her or somewhere else, if they were inspired by her Instagram it was a success. Living about 3-hours away from her vacation rental, Daniella has thought of everything to self-host from smart thermostats to smart smoke detectors. Before starting, she did reach out to a property management company who told her that she could not run a social media account for the property which made her stay clear of property managers. Not everyone is cut out to be hospitable. Many people who list their homes on Airbnb have a sense of "this is my house and my rules." Daniella believes that people are paying you to stay at the property and therefore you should do as much as you can to make them feel at home. For this reason, she has little to no house rules. To this day, she hasn't had any issues with the lack of rules. Each guest deserves to feel special and at home. READ MORE
