Spinrad and his new AAA megacorporation, SpinGlobal, are set up to be one of the most exciting new members of the Big 10 in a long time... especially for shadowrunners. Opti joins us today to talk about Spinrad, Global Sandstorm, and the middle east of the Sixth World.  Chit-Chat / Catching Up BOBBY - I like numbers News / Stuff Final episode... ?... yes, it is. Cold Opens Mashup. Q&A Darrek Workman - How does the ritual to become a coimeadai in the court of shadows affect the awakened? Can a coimeadai be awakened? The book isn't clear. In shadowrun cannon through the years there has been an effort to keep magic magical and the matrix technological, hence technomancers cannot also be awakened. It's always been one or the other allowing the player characters to have different roles in a group. CFD has broken from this principle and I was wondering if the court of shadows did too. Ross D’Souza - If you had to have a single piece of 'ware (cyber- or bio-), what would you have? Q&A Martin Ackerton - Hi Bobby and Cassie. I am a somewhat new GM. My group is really getting into Shadowrun, but we've avoided having a matrix character in the group. The players are either uninterested or daunted by the rules. One of my players wants to do the decking, but is afraid that they are going to steal the spotlight too much. How can include a matrix character in their runs without bringing the action to a halt for everyone else and causing them to resent the matrix? Q&A Ross D'Souza- Some of my players have really high edge and never have much use of them.  I'm wondering about introducing other uses of them to give them more options, any ideas?  An idea I thought about was a minor "plot point" like use similar to SR Anarchy (or Fate's Fate points). alightgrift- as life continues to imitate art, in the case of the Shadowrun setting and our own, has it changed the way you think about or interact with the game? Chit-Chat / Catching Up BOBBY - Wendy's rebuttal BROOKE - Rusty Zimmerman fandom kept her in Shadowrun. Q&A Lazlo Zingo (PATRON) - The last sentence of Killing Hands says,"Your Killing Hands attacks are magical, so they can bypass a creature’s magical defenses against attack, such as the Immunity to Normal Weapons power, and may be used by adepts with Astral Perception during astral combat."1. Are there other "magical defenses against attack" besides Immunity to Normal Weapons that Killing Hands bypasses? It says "such as" so that implies there is more than one power it bypasses. The critter power of Regeneration seems to be another. Are there others? Mystic Armor?2. How does Killing Hands help during Astral Combat? The final line "may be used by adepts with Astral Perception during astral combat." What would that accomplish? Normal Astral Combat allows the combatant to choose stun or physical already. [Core page 315 - Damage inflicted from astral combat can be either Stun or Physical (attacker’s choice).] My group is considering allowing the power to let the Adept use their physical attributes instead of mental during Astral Combat. Be on the Discord server to join in! http://shadowcasters.network/discord Q&A Ross D’Souza (PATRON) - The rulebooks are generally centred around the American continent and hence also the stats are focused with that in mind. Would you change or tweak anything if you were basing a campaign in a different place? What areas would you consider and think about. I was wondering on your opinions as I've just started running a game (first Shadowrun GMing! - so many rules!) based around the London Sprawl and Cambridge (as we are all British). We decided to tweak the weapon availability ratings as weapons in UK are currently pretty much illegal and we wanted to continue this feeling through to the Sixth World. So we've bumped up non-R-availability weapons to R-availability weapons, and R-availability weapons to F-availability weapons (with a couple exceptions in line with current British law). Of course this applies to the nationally run areas, and extraterratoriality of the relevant corps are exempt - but if you're totting guns around a corp area, you'd have other problems. Also it's not like underground organisations and shady areas don't have them. It's just above board, it's cracked down upon a lot more and their reactions are more appropriate with that in mind. John Schleiber - In one of my groups, I have a player who's very opposed to the whole direction the metaplot of Shadowrun has been taking. This player is a transplanted Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 player, and only plays technological-based characters -- deckers, riggers and the like. He doesn't want anything to do with magic personally, and he's very unhappy that Shadowrun seems to push the magic angle of the metaplot. He'd like to see a return to more technology-oriented metaplot elements, but he's losing hope of that happening. I'm wondering if any of you have played with characters like this, who are recalcitrant to accepting the mix of elements in the game to the point of stubbornness, and how you'd work to either change their minds on the concept, or at least work their objections into your runs. Q&A TJ Payne (PATRON) - First, I feel like the best way to get your hands on a new rpg system is to play with people better than you. Are there any places to join in runs with some people who can show me the ropes without my presence impeding on their own experience? I've done 3 sessions with my buddies so far, and while we're having a great time, I'm still confused as drek with a good 99% of the game, all the way to double checking dodge and soak rules every fight, or just discovering we were doing initiative wrong (and still probably are), and the last thing I want to do is hop onto ShadowNet or RunnerHub and slow people down.Second, where is a good place to purchase pdfs for the game? I've always used books for all my rpgs, but since Catalyst has... Well... "Catalyst problems", the need for an errata and index is huge. I sort of remembered hearing that the pdfs get errata updated, or am I totally crazy? Joseph Carey - Hello Folks. I'm pretty new to Shadowrun and have noticed that across games a lot of players and GM's seem to abide pretty closely to the setting's lore (particularly compared to D&D). Is this typical to games you've played? What makes the history and setting so integral to Shadowrun? Have you ever messed around with major plot elements, factions, or major events? (from what I understand they look bright due to the spell cast) Therefore is there a way of being sneaking in both real world and astral at the same time via spells? Ross D’Souza - With astral signatures, I understand that when you cast you leave a signature that can be traced unless it's cleaned. So with a fireball, there's a signature that's left in astral space for X hours unless cleaned. What happens when the target of a spell can move, e.g. invisibility? Chit-Chat / Catching Up BOBBY - New door, last Actual Play session, and website comments. News / Stuff Sixth World Podcast is one year old! Q&A Daniel Barkum - How do you handle distance when out comes to hosts? When I read the description in the core rulebook it says that hosts have no physical location, but that on the matrix it seems to have a location related to a physical one but with a distance to the "ground" related to its importance. That doesn't really make sense to me though. Distance increases the noise, so the more important a host is the higher the noise rating will be for anyone to get in? Seems a bit harsh… Cory Barnes - Hey Bobby, Cassie, and anyone else out there, I hope all is well in your lives. I want to preface my question with a brief background, I've been a consistent listener to many podcasts (most of which are shadowrun related) and have thoroughly enjoyed the content you guys and all of the other shadowcasters put out there, I have always dabbled with the idea of getting into radio/podcasting/recording and well you guys have really inspired me with the amount of "success" the shadowcasters community has been getting. Finally, no one is already currently jumped into the device. How does a pure rigger get the 3 marks need to complete the Jump into Rigged device action into an enemy drone? I have read that you can get sleaze and attack attributes can be added through the info in data trails, but this is a CRB matrix action so I assume there is another way. The only other way is (according to the forums) a controversial way using a friendly decker to use spoof command "invite mark" to allow the riggers RCC to gain the required 3 marks. BUT given spoof command “making the device think that your command is a legitimate one from its owner” is the Electronic Warfare test even needed? Lots of audience questions... What about the angelic forms? Is there a plane from which one could summon a Planatar or Solar (both D&D trademarks of Wizzards of the Coast)? Keith King (PATRON) - I have a rigger in my gaming group that always runs his roadmaster im offline mode whilst connected with a DNI in the safety of a his cocoon. This is partly to protect the vehicle from deckers but also his RCC. Currently the penalty for running in this mode is he can't wirelessly control any of his other drones. As the RCC is offline obviously. But the only real penalty I can apply to the road master is that offline he can't utilize and maps to navigate with. This means in a car chase if traveling to a specific destination I rule that another player has to be on their commlink yelling out directions (using both simple and complex actions). I was wondering as fellow gm's do you a) allow riggers to run vehicles they are plugged into offline and b) of so what penalties do you apply for doing so. As we all know "everything has its price". I loved how you all were able to have a rule disagreement without any f-bombs being dropped and the virtue of your mothers being called into question. Something my group and I can't seem to manage :) I might have to watch Bill and Ted's Ex Ad again for some guidance. :)Anyway over to my question.Given this week is about magic, I have an aura question. Mainly how far does an aura extend past the body. As a GM I would rule that full body armour would still have a bit of aura extending past it, but what about a rigger in his cacoon or the mystery figure in thick robes or even the ganger leaning on the closed door in front of you or the Bandersnatch in the thick bushes/behind a tree in front of you. Where would you draw the line for an automatic success.I understand there are various ways to modify how you aura is viewed through metamagic I was speaking purely from a detection standpoint.   Chris Vandergriff (PATRON) - Catalyst has been doing a great job with the sourcebooks. Q&A Sparkles (Patron) - For Mr. J and other GMs - When creating content for you campaigns, do you find it more interesting to use character backgrounds, contacts, qualities as source material to drive the direction or do you prefer to drive the campaign thru your own/published content? Player content followed by cannon then my own. Player content makes it easier to get the players invested in the story. Canon material is fun to use as then players can relate when it shows up elsewhere like podcasts, missions...Using my own content can be fun but too often it results in the Ikea Effect (we overvalue things because they are ours versus their inherent value). When I do use my own I try always let the players give me an indication of what they like then will often give creative license to them. Chris Vandergriff (Patron) - Can you do a show on how to use Shadowrun in the wild? The adjustments needed from urban to rural knowledge skills. New contacts available, or new uses for old contacts. The shows favorite or most desired Howling Shadows menace to use. Bobby can we please? I think we can put this on our topics list. Howling Shadows is one of my favorite books and I’ve a wide range of jobs from trips into Eden, Ecuador in Amazon, divind underwater in Aquacology, and sinking a ship with whales & sea lions Keith King (Patron) - Seeing I am now bloody famous (for getting a mention on this podcast), I thought I'd try again. Booby your complex action podcast (which are dead set awesome by the way virtual high-five for Cliff as well) on Matrix Perception really put the Razorcat amongst the phoenician birds for my group. Mostly because we (that’s is to say “I”) was doing it wrong. So now to my question. When you search for hidden icons (unopposed matrix perception test) and you get at least one success. Do you a) get a list of hidden icons (like searching for wifi on your phone) so you effectively know how many hidden icons there are or b) Just get the knowledge that there are hidden icons.   I understand from that point you can start using an opposed matrix perception test (on random hidden icon) to reveal the icon to you. I also get that you can narrow down who you are going to roll against based on something you know about the icon, for example attached to smartlink for guns or is NOT transmitting GPS location to the matrix (mostly to get around the BS pocket full of RFIDs tags trick), but again, would it be like filtering a list in excel and therefore you know how many smartlinked enabled weapons are hidden within 100m of you… Hopefully I have made my question clear enough. If not, email me back and I will reword it.   Cheers guys and bloody top work again Chummers keep it up. Oh and Cassie my players are going need their rubber lined budgie smugglers for their next run… they are off to the party egg. Also I’m Australian if you don’t know what budgie smugglers are.. google it. Your 1 hit on Matrix Perception would get you more of the list of hidden icons in area, same host or 100 meters. There can be a LOT of them. Keep in mind door locks, light fixtures, cameras...are all likely to be running silent to reduce the clutter in Matrix in everyone’s AR. Of course there are just persona who don’t want to stand out too. Technically per core you’d have to start picking them out of that list at randomly and doing opposed test on each one to find out more information. This is why you want to know 1 feature of the icon running silent to filter out all the extras. What a ‘feature’ is can be bit of GM interpretation. I let hackers using AR with line of site to device and icons easier because they know what they are looking for. Super excited to hear you’re going to the party egg! Banishing facing higher dice pool than direct spells but lower thresholds.  Indirect spells face the highest opposing dice pool Conclusion: Banishing is more viable than spellcasting for Summoned & Free Spirits but not for Bound Spirits.  Tavares Maintenance - Thanks Cassie! so the last session I had, my physad used a dmso/Gama-Scopolamine dart to paralyze someone. my DM and I were a both hazy on how to handle that drug interaction. He rolled 3 successes against my drug of 12 power and at first he thought the mark wouldn’t be affected. I thought that because of how the gama reads that the mark would be paralyzed still but the length of the drug would be lessened by 3 successes worth. was I wrong? You are right. Gamascopolmaine has power of 12 and your GM only rolled 3 success. Since the power was not reduced to 0 the drug takes effect. The target will be immediately be paralyzed for about an hour. The description doesn’t say net hits reduces that time but it would be fair for a GM to determine it might. After the ~hour of paralysis wears off then the truth serum part kicks in for another hour. Mechanically their Willpower drops by 3 but can’t go below 1 which is going to hurt their resistance to many social skills like Intimidation or spells like Mind Probe.  j Wrex - you mentioned you're a beer snob... which do you prefer: draft, can, or bottle? Ken Miller - Here is a question....why is it that when catalyst drops new material on the market, people race to buy it, then flame it on the forums but still use it? .?.?.?. Happens every time.... Feeding confirmation biases That’s what the internet does……? Both Bobby and Cassie as always enjoyable but please get Adam back again. Great episode. Also Cassie you said that you would leave the hardened armour roll 20 macro in the show notes. If you could sort that out that would be sweet. Top work guy, I really enjoy your stuff. Ralf Stauder - The food episode begs the following questions: What remains of rural America in the Sixth World (after corporate buyout, nation-state separation, wildlife awakening, and etc.)? It's all Centaur reservations & Amish territory. Okay that’s only partly true. Rural America is sparsely covered in SR lore. Much of it went back to the NAN, other areas really are centaur reservations, privatized farmsteads like today, and a hot ground of eco protection or terrorist activity. Howling Shadows continued the narrative of protected areas being turned into a harvestable natural resource and the eco terrorist fighting against this. Is food shortage still a regular problem among first world nations by the 2070s (excluding the sinless)? Sometimes. The general food shortages have been resolved but even a small disruption can cause it to be an issue. An example is early 2070s Aztland’s war with Amazonia and the destruction of food sources by Sirrug caused a famine in Atlanz. This example goes to show that food shortage is still a significant concern even if it’s not the top worry today. Has food production become more localized (arcology) or centralized (Aztech)? Centralized. The Big 10 still control the world’s food sources. Aztech & Shiawese are the leading people on this front. Sk & Horizon have a significant hand in it. Renraku has some buy in as well with Nestle bottling. Food in general is still very much in the hands of the corps. Has Sixth World move away from Western diet? Or just disguises with substitute? Disguised it with substitutes. Example is “McHugh” which is an obvious McDonald’s parody still sells burgers they are just now ‘soy’. The restaurant Meat World also sell soy. Japanese, Elven, Salish, and other foods have gained a massive marketplace in SixthWorld thanks to the corps but the Western diet is still alive. It just is now soy burgers, cheese substitute, and milkfree shakes. Not in general but with cyberdecks and technomancers? Unless you have a cyberdeck over 300,000 nuyen you are stuck with a device rating of 3 or less. And, page 421 core rulebook, under Wireless Bonuses, states that, "If there is a Noise Rating from a situation that **is greater than the item's Device Rating**, not including distance, the device temporarily loses its wireless functionality." That means any commercial area in a city or hacking from the barrens into a device in the Sprawl downtown negates the wireless use of the deck. Same with commlinks. So, if you jam an area with a noise of 5, only commlinks of rating 4+ can send messages and cyberdecks or cyberware need a device rating 4 to maintain wireless functionality. Essentially, the decker needs a Sony CIY-720, which costs 345,000 nuyen (far more than the average decker can afford). What about technomancers? When does a technomancer lose matrix connectivity? Seems like the decker get screwed, even with +1 noise reduction for using a datajack and always needing to run the Signal Scrub program for +2 noise reduction. So, how do normal people in the Shadowrun universe take their basic commlink (device rating 1 or 2) to a nightclub or restaurant in the city, and still make calls? Or, are commlinks routinely not operational due to high noise in the Shadowrun universe? Noise is a tensions builder for the GMs. One of its uses is to give the decker a reason to be on site with his team. Why is the Hacker not hiding in Remond while his team does a run in the Downtown? Glorious Noise! There are two types Noise, Distance & Static/Spam. Distance is typically device to device related where Static/Spam is environmental. Distance noise is easy reduce, get closer. Wage slaves can easily meet in a Host to ignore this penalty. Static / Spam Zone Noise affects your connection to the Matrix and this can cause devices to lose wireless connection if the noise is greater than the Device Rating. For Technomancers this will always be their Resonance. Jammers effective create this sort of noise. ‘How does Static/Spam noise affect normal people?’ Typically Seattle is going to have a noise of 1 or 2. With a Datajack, which almost everyone should have according to Data Trails, this drops Noise to 0 or 1. Even your squatter in the Barrens with a data jack can get their Metalink to work. A Technomancer with Resonance over 2 is good to go. Now the GM wants to create tension so he raises the stakes...You’re going into an AA zone of Bellevue which is a Commercial District in a City with a Spam Noise of 4. AA zones are swanky, people hanging out here are not using Metalinks. The wage slaves & salary men are rocking datajacks & the latest Renraku Sensei or Erika Elite making a 4 noise null sweat. A Street Runner with cheap deck like Hermes Ikon, DR 2, is going to need to keep up Signal Scrub. Established Runners should have at least a Navigator, DR 3, + a Datajack so 4 noise isn’t a problem for him either. After getting infected himself, he became a sort of leader of the ghouls there. He worked and got ghouls recognized as metahumans in the UCAS. However, Grey died “mysteriously” and then subsequently their recognition as metahumans was repealed. Ever since it’s been controversial politics about whether or not to allow them metahuman status again. Especially since, in recent years, there have been a lot of reports of the “hunger” that ghouls experience is getting worse. Chit-Chat / Catching Up BOBBY - I burned my finger, and my wife got mad at me about it. Eric da’MAJ sent me stuff! WE HAVE A NEW PODCAST! What the heck are we doing here? Schedule Every other Thursday at 9pm eastern US (next on Oct 6th) Upcoming guests?   News / Random Stuff Shadowtalker on Facebook Shadowrun Anarchy - Character Sheet Sixth World Design SR Triple Pack Humble Bundle   Q&A SEND QUESTIONS TO…. EMAIL - theshow@sixthworldpodcast.com TWITTER - @6WorldPodcast Ken Summers - Patreon patron The situation is this. 2 special forces Corporate Elite team members shot Fully Auto into their 6 seater van. Body 16 Armor 12.  They both won had first initiative moves, while 4 players were in the van down a alley while it was raining. The Spec forces were aiming and targeting the Van only.  With all the modifiers fully auto  with  -5 fully auto -2 environmental (rain) with an Ares Alpha. They got 6 hits and 7  hits on van (smart like increased accuracy).  10 bullets each total of 20. Now, our issue was would any of those bullets HIT any of the passengers without being targeted? (FYI the van was not moving it was parked by a loading dock) In the end I made a ruling that everyone can roll Reaction plus Intuition for defense -9 fully auto + 4 full Cover but they would all get the their armor + Body PLUS the armor rating of the Van. Im pretty sure this is WRONG. with the armor penetration rules I clearly seem to be missing something. Your way of doing it a good on the fly option. 1. Will the bullets hit the passengers as well as the targeted van or the van only? If not, are they subjected to being hit while in a van being shot up. Mechanically since the van was the target and not the passengers, the players would not need to make a defense test. Core pg. 205 2. Would I have to use the armor penetration rules  and just lower the DV to the players if they are all hit? 3. What would you do as GMs in this situation faced with this scenario? From the scene you described, I would have had the corp team use Suppressive Fire on Vehicles, Core pg 200. Since the vehicle wasn’t moving there would be no defense test which makes the -9 from a Full Auto unnecessary.  Suppressive fire turn the van into swiss cheese. Roll goon’s suppressive fire, if Vehicle Armor - AP is less than Damage then the players would need to make a defense test. They get Rea + Edge + 4 for Good Cover. Soak: Body + Armor + Vehicle’s armor; they can do a -5 interrupt action of “Hit the Dirt” which gives them Body + Armor + Vehicle’s Armor x2   Scott Flowers - Facebook Do shadowrun vampires have shadows/reflections and/or can they be recorded on camera? Vampires in Shadowrun are strain II infected. They have reflections and can be seen on camera. Details can be found in Run Faster pg 140. ALSO In the Shadowrun setting are grenades commonly concussive in nature or do they depend on fragmentation/shrapnel to injure? Because per my understanding of the rules, their damage reflects back off of hard surfaces, causing "chunky salsa". But fragments would much more likely embedded in said hard surfaces and only the concussive force would reflect. Is this just something that's hand waived or are frag grenades a thing of the past in the 6th world? Shadowrun has all types of grenades from Flash Bangs to Fragmentation. Fragmentation are certainly more likely to destroy barriers and therefore less likely to do chunky salsa because it is doing more damage to the barrier. To determine how to do this review the Destroying Barriers & Chunky Salsa GM Screen.   Kevin - YouTube   Are all guns wireless and vulnerable to a decker attack ? Only when wireless etc. Yes. Core pg. 420 almost all devices have a wireless link including your gun. A decker can brick the gun making it unusable. Core pg 421; You can turn the wireless off with a Free Action preventing hacking. 2:00 mark Bricking Gear   Main Topic - Neo-Anarchy What is Neo-Anarchy? Taken from original print copy. Donald Rooum and Freedom Press (ed.). What Is Anarchism? An Introduction. London: Freedom Press, 1995. Link “Anarchists believe that the point of society is to widen the choices of individuals. This is the axiom upon which the anarchist case is founded.” “If you were isolated you would still have the human ability to make decisions, but the range of viable decisions would be severely restricted by the environment. Society, however it is organised, gives individuals more opportunities, and anarchists think this is what society is for [...] Anarchists strive for a society which is as efficient as possible, that is a society which provides individuals with the widest possible range of individual choices.” “For dictionary purposes, anarchism may be correctly defined as opposition to government in all its forms. But it would be a mistake to think of anarchism as essentially negative. The opposition to government arises out of a belief about society which is positive.” “The ideal of anarchism is a society in which all individuals can do whatever they choose, except interfere with the ability of other individuals to do what they choose.” My freedom ends where your freedom begins. Is anarchy a practical goal? Is it really even obtainable? Devil’s advocate… So if everyone could just choose what to do totally freely… why would anyone join the army? Civil service? Janitorial work? Etc… Neo-Anarchy in Shadowrun Also, how is NEO-anarchism different from Anarchism? Historically, where has Neo-Anarchy “lived” in the SR universe? How to return to a focus on Neo-A?   Guest Q&A   Freeshadow42 - Reddit   You've recently been talking about how the hope of the setting in current SR overplots has seemed absent and that you hope to restore that voice, if only as a freelancer doing freelancer things. Do your plans to try to do that ONLY include Neo-Anarchy as an answer, or are there other plans in the works? And if you can (I know how NDAs work) could you please elaborate on those plans, if not, I understand.
